Birth of José Martí

January 28

By: Dakota O’Brien

As part of the celebration of José Martí, kids go to parks in Havana. They take part in activities like dancing, singing, playing games, drawing on the sidewalks, and watching performances by children’s performance groups. Flowers and wreaths are placed at statues and monuments of José Martí. Many people also visit Santa Efigencia Cemetery, to see the resting place of José Martí.

José Martí was an important figure in Latin American literature. During his life he was a poet, essayist, journalist, revolutionary philosopher, and a political theorist. His writings and political activity turned him into a symbol for Cuba’s independence against Spain in the 19th century, and later against the threat of United States expansionism into Cuba. He dedicated his life to the political independence for Cuba and intellectual independence for all Spanish Americans.

Me gustaría participar en el cumpleaños de José Martí. Le ves divertido y sencillo. Me gustaría ver las muchas actividades y representaciónes. Me gustaría oír sus poemas leía en voz alta. Me gusta que dura un día.
