Communities are looking to use wireless technology and the IoT to create impactful solutions for their citizens.

• Infrastructure – remote monitoring of roads, bridges, buildings, parks, and venues.

• Citizen convenience – real-time traffic information including consideration of traffic lights and smart parking, in which you can find a spot and reserve one.

• Public transportation – digital signage to let commuters know when the next bus or train will arrive.

• Public safety – wireless broadband connectivity is important for Next Generation 911, and to providing our first responders with the most up-to-date and pertinent information.

Pedestrian Collision Warning All day and night

5G Benefits: Connected Car Vehicle Safety

• Automobiles will increasingly use sensors and collision avoidance capabilities to alert the drivers to stay in lanes, avoid collisions, and to contact emergency services in the event of an accident.

• Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) safety applications have the potential to prevent or reduce the severity of up to 80% of non-alcohol related crashes.

Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT)I

•Public Safety – Wireless connections will inform public safety personnel of the status of threats and help coordinate response tactics.

•Smart Grid – Wireless connections will enable monitoring of the grid, particularly in the distribution network. Sensors deployed throughout the distribution network and on remote meters will enable the utilities to better serve customers. Projections indicate that smart grid modernization investments could total $1.3T over the next 15 years.Source: National Instruments

• Mobile Health – Today, remote diagnostic vital signs are being trialed and utilized. But, with a wireless network that can connect consumers’ body sensors with health care facilities, consumers will see improvements in health care outcomes and efficiency gains.

• Movies, video & other media: High speed hotspots enable rapid downloads of movies and video, or streaming to a mobile device.

• Wearable & Tag Devices: These devices benefit consumers with: tracking, monitoring bicycles, motorcycles, pets, briefcases, handbags, keys, etc.

Consumer Demand is Increasing

• Since 2010, mobile data traffic has increased 2,387 percent.

• In order to keep up with this demand, wireless providers will need to densify existing networks and deploy the next generation of wireless networks: 5G.

• Wireless infrastructure deployment, known as small cells, is needed.

Page 12: BJA NLC Presentation 3-14-17 - Home » NLC Congressional ...ccc.nlc.org/files/2017/01/Hot-Tech-Issues-for-Cities-Wireless-CTIA.pdf · &7,$ •:kr :h $uh •&7,$ lv dq lqwhuqdwlrqdo

What Is a Small Cell?

• Small cells are wireless antennas, typically no more than six cubic feet in volume that can be placed on any existing structure such as a streetlight, rooftop, utility pole, etc.

• Associated equipment, typically with a cumulative volume of less than 28 cubic feet, is also placed at the site to provide commercial power, equipment that process wireless signals and a connection to the small cell.

• Access

• Reasonable costs and fees

• Streamlining

How can we work together?

Industry’s Solutions DO NOT…

The appropriate statutory framework does not:

• Remove local oversight over the permitting process. The municipality has the right to deny an application that does not meet objective requirements.

• Eliminate municipal requirements for building, electrical and public way use permits.
