Leafrollers (e.g. Omnivorous leafroller)Platynota stultana

Symptoms

Leaves of plant rolled and tied together with silk webbing; feeding damage to rolled leaves; defoliation of plant; silk webbing may also be present on fruits and fruits may have substantial scarring from feeding damage; larvae wriggle vigorously when disturbed and may drop from plant on a silken thread

Japanese beetlePopillia japonica

Symptoms Japanese beetle

Leaves skeletonized (only veins remaining); flowers and buds damaged; plant damage may be extensive; adult insect is a metallic green-bronze beetle with tufts of white hair protruding from under wing covers on each side of the body; adult beetles are approximately 13 mm in length; larvae are cream-white grubs which develop in the soil

Japanese Beetle

Galls on canes which are usually 2.5-7.6 cm (1- 3 in) in length; canes may die over winter above the galls; bud break may be delayed the following spring; canes with galls often do not produce fruit; adult insect is a slender, metallic black beetle; larvae are white, flat-headed grubs

Rose Chafer

Beetle has 1/2” long, tan wings with reddish-brown edges. Long, thin hairy legs. Skeletonizes leaves and flowers. Present in large quantities in June and July. Worst on sandy sites near grassy areas.

Fruitworm (Sawfly)

Adult is yellow to brown sawfly beetle, 1/4” long. Larvae are brown and white, 1/8” long. Adults make slits in flower buds and larvae feed on berries.

Aphids

Aphids Symptoms

They are the size of a pinhead and vary in color depending on the species. Cluster on stems and under leaves, sucking plant juices. Leaves then curl, thicken, yellow and die. Produce large amounts of a liquid waste called “honeydew”. Aphid sticky residue becomes a growth media for sooty mold.

Mites

Symptoms

Pinpoint size, many different colors. Found on undersides of leaves. Severe infestations have some silken webbing. Sap feeding causes bronzing of leaves.

Thrips

Symptoms

Tiny, slender, fringed wing insects ranging from 1/25 to 1/8” long. Nymphs are pale yellow and highly active and adults are usually black or yellow-brown, but may have red, black or white markings. Feed on large variety of plants by puncturing them and sucking up the contents.

White fly (Dialeurodes eugenia)

Symptoms

It damages jamun tree in all parts of India. Affected fruits get wormy appearance on the surface. White fly can be controlled in the following ways.

Leaf eating caterpillar (Carea subtillis)

Symptoms

This caterpillar is only found in Coimbatore. The insect infests the leaves and may defoliate the tree. It can be controlled by spraying Rogor 30 EC or Malathion @ 0.1 per cent.
