From time to time people tell me, “lighten up, it’s just a goat”Or

That’s a lot of money for “just a goat”.But what they don’t understand is... “It’s more than just a goat”

It’s trust...It’s love...

It’s caring...

it’s morethan just a goat

Page 7: BOERBOKNUUS • NO 25 • 2017 Boerbok Joernaal 01.pdf · 6 BOERBOKNUUS • NO 25 • 2017 From time to time people tell me, “lighten up, it’s just a goat” Or That’s a lot

7B O E R G O A T N E W S • N R 2 5 • 2 0 1 7

They don’t understand the distance travelled or the long hours in the barns...They don’t understand the time spent, or the costs involved for “just a goat”

They don’t understand what “just a goat” teaches Compassion & patience Pride Character Hard work Confidence Gives love back

We have friendships and life long memories because of “just a goat”

Some of our proudest moments have come about “just a goat”And some of our saddest moments have come from “just a goat” with the lost of family and

friends.Forever in our hearts and memories...

So for people like you and I “its not just a goat”, it’s a whole lot more...So the next time you hear the phrase “It’s just a goat” just smile, because...

They just don’t understand “it’s not just a goat!”

What a great privilege to be part of our next edition once again. As in the past, this Journal is the masterpiece of our boer goat industry.

A warm thanks to Michelle and Marizelle for the many hours they put into compiling this magazine. Michelle, we know that the next edition will be even better!

Thanks to all the members who put their confidence in me with the election as President of the SABGBA. I shall try not to disappoint you and will always put the breed first.

There is an unbelievable influx into our industry. Everyone is phoning and

sending e-mails to join or to obtain information on how to start farming with goats. I find it gladdening to see how many young farmers, emerging farmers and even those from our neighbouring countries as well as from abroad make enquiries.

Our thanks to all our selectors who work hard at promoting the breed; I can see a bright future ahead for the goat industry in South Africa. Regardless of all the elements on the side of government, the Boer goat industry just keeps forging ahead.

Our gratitude to our Heavenly Father Who blesses us every day: that we may be stewards of His animals.

My best wishes to you with your boer goats; I trust and believe that you will find much pleasure in what you are doing and that this beautiful breed will expand ever more.

Thanks to all our members who place advertisements as well as to external businesses who contribute to the success of this Journal – which is our showcase.

Let us honour and respect the boer goat breed, and let all of us collaborate as one great family, showing one another the necessary support and love.

To be successful you can not run only in the fast track; run in your own track.

what makes the breeding history of the refined boer goat so unique, is that it was not bred from two or more purebred breeds like some other SA breeds, but was selected from

all the existing goat breeds in South Africa for all their functional characteristics and type as they are known today and hence the name of Refined Boer Goat.

This ground-breaking work was mainly done by a few farmers in the Eastern Cape, particularly around Somerset East. The pinnacle in boer goat history was reached when the South African Boer Goat Breeders’ Association was established at Somerset East on 4 July 1959 by Messrs TB Jordaan (Chairperson) and PB (Syce) Botha (Secretary). This step provided in a long-felt need for establishing an authoritative body for promoting and protecting the interests of boer

goat breeders in South Africa. As the breeders of the boer goat were now united behind one mouthpiece, as an association they were better able to comply with a uniform breeding policy and selection programme and to render advice to breeders, especially in the use of the desired type of breed animals. At the founding meeting a committee was nominated to be responsible for compiling a constitution and drafting breed standards.

The following members were present at the founding meeting of 4 July 1959: PB Botha, PB van Dyk, TB Jordaan, Colin Bennett, PJ Botha, LA Nell (Senior), WJ Jordaan (Zeiss), Paul Jordaan (Driefontein), LR Steyl, TP Kruger and WS Berrington.

On page 24 in the first journal of the Boer Goat Breeders’ Association in 1959, the late oom Theunis Jordaan described the development of the refined boer goat as well as his own Buffelsfontein boer goat stud:

This stud of refined boer goats was established in 1931 with my purchase of one ram from the late Mr Jeremias Triegaardt of the farm Van Wyksvlei, Bedford, and half of the boer goat ewes that belonged to the partnership WG Jordaan and Sons, of which I was also a partner. Around 1918 my father, the late WG Jordaan, bought about fifteen goat ewes from Mrs Van de Venter of the farm Slot in the district of Somerset East.

They were smooth-haired goat ewes with pale red heads.

Page 30: BOERBOKNUUS • NO 25 • 2017 Boerbok Joernaal 01.pdf · 6 BOERBOKNUUS • NO 25 • 2017 From time to time people tell me, “lighten up, it’s just a goat” Or That’s a lot

He then bought a ram from the late Mr I.B. van Heerden of Kaalplaas, Cradock. It was a particularly large apple ram with a strong constitution. This ram and the ewes were therefore the foundation of the current stud. More or less sixty years ago many farmers each had some boer goats. However, in those days they were about all colours of the rainbow and many of them were also long-haired.

In those days constitution was the only feature that people considered. The evenness of colour, uniformity and pigmentation did not matter at all.

dEVELoPMENT of ThE ENNoBLEd BoER GoAT

The African renaissance already started 80 years ago – at the beginning of the 20th century – with breeding the ennobled boer goat. The resurrection and renascence by breeding the boer goat – that forms an integral part of the African goat - complies with the basic principles of a Renaissance. A regeneration of thinking and an amendment in the view of life of a group of farmers in the Eastern Cape converted the indigenous boer goat into the best meat goat breed in the world. Seen against the background that 341 goat breeds are distributed across the world, it makes this a unique achievement.

Compared to where boer goat farmers found themselves 70-80 years ago and where they are today, it has been a remarkable effort. The small group of farmers in the Eastern Cape who took the initiative to improve the boer goat, had no choice but to play the hand they had been dealt with through circumstances. In this hand was the former indigenous goat breed that was an integral part of the greater whole, namely the African goat. It was the goat that the farmers acquired from the indigenous people to farm with. Thus the name boer goat gradually evolved.

huidige stoet.

oNTwIKKELING VAN dIE VEREdELdE BoERBoK

Goats communicate with each other by bleating. Mothers will often call to their young (kids) to ensure they stay close-by. Mother and kid goats recognize each other’s calls soon after the mothers give birth.

Kids can follow their mothers almost immediately after being born. They are very close to their mothers and are weaned after around 6 months.

Goats are very intelligent and curious animals. Their inquisitive nature is exemplified in their constant desire to explore and investigate anything unfamiliar which they come across.

Goats have excellent coordination. They have great balance and are thus able to survive in precarious areas such as steep mountains. They can even climb trees and some species can jump over 5 feet high.

Like sheep, a goat’s eye is rectangular rather than round. They have excellent night vision and will often browse during the night.

Bene moet sterk en goed geplaas wees met sterk kootgewrigte, reggevormde hoewe, so donker as moontlik.

NECK ANd foREQuARTERS: A Neck of moderate length in proportion to the length of the body, full and well-fleshed and well-joined to the forequarter, is essential. The breastbone should be broad with a deep, broad brisket. The shoulder should be fleshy, in proportion to the body

and be well-fitted to the withers. The

withers should be broad and as well-fitted as possible (not sharp). The front legs should be of medium length and in proportion to the depth of the body. The legs should be strong and well-placed, with strong pastern joints and well-formed hoofs which are as dark as possible.

Characteristic cull defects: Too long, thin neck; too short neck, shoulders too loose.

BARREL: The ideal is a long, deep broad barrel. The ribs must be well sprung and fleshed, and the loins as well filled as possible. The goat should have a broad, fairly straight back and must not be pinched behind the shoulders.

Characteristic cull defects: Back too concave, too slab-sided, too cylindrical or pinched behind the shoulder.

hINdQuARTERS: The Boer Goat should have a broad and long rump, not sloping too much, well fleshed buttocks which are not too flat, and have fully fleshed thighs. The tail must be straight where it grows out of the dock and then may swing to either side.

Characteristic cull defects: A rump that hangs too much or is too short. A too long shank or flat buttocks.

LEGS: Emphasis should be placed on the legs which should be strong and well-placed. Too fleshy legs are undesirable. Strong legs imply hardiness and a strong constitution, which are absolutely essential characteristics of the Boer Goat.

Characteristic cull defects: Knock knees, bandy legs, cow hocked or post legged or sickle hocked. Legs

Kenmerkende prulfoute: ‘n Kruis wat té veel hang of té kort is, plat boude, té lang skenkel, skewe stert.

Té dik gevleesde bene is ongewens.

‘n Beperkte hoeveelheid dons sal indie wintermaande toegelaat word.

Kenmerkende prulfoute: Té lang, growwe bedekking, té donsige bedekking, asook té ligte pigmentasie by haarlose dele.

SKIN ANd CoVERING: A loose supple skin with sufficient chest and neck skin folds, especially in the case of rams, is essential. Eyelids and hairless parts must be pigmented. The hairless skin under the tail should have 75% pigmentation for stud purposes, with 100% pigmentation the ideal. Short, glossy hair is desirable.

A limited amount of fur will be tolerated during winter months.

Characteristic cull defects: Covering too long and coarse or too furry, and a lack of

pigmentation of hairless parts.

SEXuAL oRGANS: Ewes: Well-formed udder firmly attached with teats as shown on picture.

Teat types – Teat Table: Teat types 9,10, 11 & 12 as illustrated in Boer Goat Breeders’ Association Teat Table will change from cull teats to flock teats, with the understanding that the teats are functionally effective, i.e. the ewe must be able to suckle her kids effectively. This must be seen to be a temporary amendment until such time as scientific research into teats may necessitate a different decision.

This amendment has been made with the express purpose of increasing the commercial flocks in South Africa.

Teat types: Shows: Goats with the teat types referred to above may not take part in Shows in South Africa.

Teat types: Auctions: Goats with the teat types referred to above may be put up for sale as flock goats, at regional, club and production auctions from 1 November 2008 on the condition that the inspectors deem that the teats are functionally effective. Goats with teat types 9, 10, 11 & 12 may, however not be

Ramme

Twee matige, groot, goedgevormde en gesonde, ewe groot teelballe in een sak, by ramme. Sak, nie meer as 5cm gesplete, is toelaatbaar. Die skrotum moet ten minste 25cm in omtrek wees.

Kenmerkende prulfoute: Tros, kalbas of gesplete spene, té klein teelballe, sak meer as 5cm gesplete.

Kenmerkende prulfoute: Té groot of té klein (ponie).

As from: 1 Jan 2016 All rams

Rams: Two reasonably large, well-formed, healthy and equal sized testes in one scrotum. A scrotum with a split no larger than 5cm is permissible. The scrotum must be at least 25cm in circumference.

Characteristic cull defects: Bunched, calabash or split teats. Testes too small, a scrotum with more than a 5 cm split

QuALITY: Is indicated by the following characteristics: This is achieved with short glossy hair and a fine lustre, and ennobled appearance, especially with a strong head, rounded horns bent backward, loose

thick, supple, folds of skin (particularly with rams) and short smooth glossy hair. In addition to the above mentioned qualities, the goat must have a lively appearance.

SIzE: The ideal is an average sized goat for maximum meat production. Not too big or too small. Thedesirable ratio between length of leg and depth of body should be achieved at all ages. Lambs should tend to be longer in the leg.

Characteristic cull defects: Goats too large or too small (pony).

CoLouRING: The ideal is a white goat with a red head and ears, a white blaze and fully pigmented skin. Shadings between light and dark red are permissible. The minimum requirement for a stud animal is a patch of at least 10cm in diameter on both sides of the head, ears excluded. Both ears should have at least 75% red colouring and with 75% pigmentation.

Minimum colour for flock goats

10 cm on either side of the head with no colour in the ears

In so ’n geval moet die inspekteur of beoordelaar sy eie diskresie gebruik.

Consistent colour is permissible but must not go farther than the shoulder nor lower than level with the chest.

BARREL, hINdQuARTER ANd BELLY:

Only one patch not exceeding 10cm in diameter is permissible.

LEGS: The term “legs” means that portion below an imaginary line formed by the chest and the under line. Patches totalling a maximum of 5cm in diameter are permissible.

TAIL: The tail may be red, but the red colour may not continue onto the body for more than 2,5cm.

REd hAIR ANd CoVERING: Very few red hair are permissible within the coat from 2 tooth onwards.

PIGMENTATIoN: Discriminate against too light pigmentation.

fLoCK GoAT: A flock goat is a Boer Goat which does not comply with the stud standards, but has no cull defects. At least 50% of the colour must be white; the other 50% must be red. The red colour of the commercial

goat must be 50% continuous without creating the impression of being motley. The rest of the body must be white. If the red colour is in the form of separate markings, it must never give the impression of being motley. Under the tail the flock goat must be at least 25% pigmented. Rams may not be more than 25% red.

EXPLANATIoN of BREEd STANdARdS

In applying these standards there are many aspects which cannot be completely defined. In such cases the inspector or judge must use his discretion. In spite of the breed standards being clear and to the point, it is never the less necessary to supply additional information in respect of certain descriptions. The major part of the body of the goat must be white to make it conspicuous and to facilitate the rounding up of goats in dense terrain. A pigmented skin on the hairless parts, e.g. under the tail, round the eyelids and mouth etc, is absolutely essential, because it offers resistance to sunburn which may result in cancer. A pigmented skin is also more resistant to skin disease. A loose, supple skin is essential for adaptability to climatic conditions. In South Africa, which is a warm

and sunny country, an animal with loose skin and short hair is beter adapted. In addition, skin of this kind provides additional resistance to external parasites.

GENERAL APPEARANCE ANd TYPE: A goat with a fine head, round horns that are bent backwards, a loose, supple skin with folds (especially in rams) and with body parts well-fleshed and in perfect balance. The ewe must be feminine, wedging slightly up to the front, which is a sign of fertility. The ram is heavier in the head, neck and forequarters. The SA Boer Goat is an animal with symmetry, with a strong, vigorous appearance and fine quality. The ewe must be feminine and the ram masculine.

waar & wanneer

makgemaak isdie BoK

7 000 v.C. mak gemaak is. In dieselfde gebied is ‘n ander tipe

inspectionsinspeksiedienste

During the first few years of the S.A. Boer Goat Breeders Association the need was felt for a service to the members by means of which they could have their animals classed by qualified inspectors. Some of the more competent members were appointed by the Association to serve on a panel of inspectors to do this job. The different classes into which Boer Goats are classed are: stud, flock and cull animals. From time to time the panel of inspectors is enlarged whenever the need arises.

Any breeder who is a member of the S.A. Boer Goat Breeders Association is entitled to inspection. When a breeder wishes to have an inspection he should apply to the Breed Director of the Association. He is supplied with a standard set of ear tags. All animals approved by the inspector are tagged with one or two ear tags (one in each ear), on which the stud number of the breeder as well as the number of the approved animal appear.

Commercial farmers may also use the inspectors to class their animals. Stud breeders must have an inspection every second year.

When a breeder decides to have an inspection he should also provide sufficient penning facilities as well as adequate labourers so that the inspection may be performed smoothly.

Inspection costs are the following:

Travelling fee of inspector R4.00 (plus vat) per kilometre (Payable to the inspector on the farm)

Inspection fee R250 (plus vat) (R200 Payable to the inspector on the farm, R50 payable to the Office)

ShowS

A World Show is held every second year preferably in Bloemfontein, which is being administrated by die SABGBA Office.

The alternative year a National Show will be held, that will be put out on Tender. Here Breeders are able to compete and the best specimens of the breed are identified by Judges of the Association. The Association has a panel of judges which is enlarged from time to time when necessary, and judge at World Championship and the other shows all over the country.

AuCTIoNS

An Official auction are held annually, and here only members of the Association may offer animals for sale. All rams and ewes offered are inspected by an inspector before the auction to ensure that the Association only offers sale animals conforming to the Breedstandards. Rams are tested for fertility on these Auctions.

CouRSES

Regular junior and senior courses are annually held. Thevenue decided by executive. During these courses the breed standards are discussed theoretically and practically demonstrated, as well as all managerial practice referring to the Boer Goat. Persons attending such courses also have an opportunity to handle the goats and do practical classing. The knowledge acquired in this way is necessary for any prospective breeder of Boer Goats.

SKouE

TeelbeleidBreeding policy

vir die sa BoerBoKtelersvereniging

for the sa Boer goat Breeders’ association

In terms of clause 3.3.5 of the Constitution, the Council of the SABBA must compile a breeding policy that complies with the requirements contained in the Constitution:

• Objective measurement of all measureable economically significant traits.

• Standard of excellence for visual evaluation.

A sound breeding policy for a meat production goat must be based on the following requirements:

1. Reproduction

Reproduction rate is the most important trait that affects the profitability of stock farming. The factors that affect reproduction rate, among others, and for which breeders must select in their breeding policy are the following:

1.1 Net reproduction rate

Fecundity is an important economic trait. Every Boer goat ewe must have a lambing interval of fewer than

1.1 Netto Aanteeltempo

Vrugbaarheid is ‘n belangrike ekonomiese eienskap. Elke Boerbok ooi moet ten minste ‘n laminterval van minder as 365 dae hê.

Page 54: BOERBOKNUUS • NO 25 • 2017 Boerbok Joernaal 01.pdf · 6 BOERBOKNUUS • NO 25 • 2017 From time to time people tell me, “lighten up, it’s just a goat” Or That’s a lot

5 4 B O E R B O K N U U S • N O 2 5 • 2 0 1 7

365 days. Rams contribute 50% to breeding and it is therefore very important that breeding rams are fertile. High libido and mating skill are requirements for breeding sires. Fecundity and milk production must always be measured relative to one another as in a ewe production index (EPI). The ultimate goal must be to have ewes that regularly wean heavy lambs. Be particularly careful of ewes who often have multiple births but are incapable of raising them properly.

1.2 Milk production

The quantity of milk of a lactating ewe is measured by the growth capacity of her lambs. The lactating udder must be well attached and developed with good teats a lamb can easily nurse from. Milk production and mothering traits are the basic components of meat production on which commercial goat farming is based.

1.3 Mothering traits

This mystical trait of a ewe to be able to care for her lamb can be measured only in the weight of the weaned lamb. It provides the mother with a special ability to overcome shortcomings or defects, such as calabash teats, vermin, etc. This trait may never be ignored in any selection programme.

2. Production

2.1 Growth capacity

The majority of goats in SA are marketed based on weight. Profitability is determined by the total weight of lambs weaned per year. In selecting meat goats for growth capacity two factors must be considered:

• weaning weight

Weaning weight is largely an indication of the ewe’s milk production and mothering traits, but it also gives a good indication of the lamb’s own growth potential.

• Post-wean weight

The increase in weight after weaning is an indication of the lamb’s genetic ability to produce progeny that will weigh heavier at weaning age. Although it is less important than weaning weight, this weight can be used to monitor late maturing animals as well as identify animals that adapt well under NATURAL production conditions.

2.1 hardiness and adaptability

The animal’s growth in the post-wean phase is a good indication of its genetic ability as regards these traits. Great emphasis must be put on the importance, during this period, of not using only feedlot conditions in selecting breeding animals. Boer goats must have

teelvaars.

Page 55: BOERBOKNUUS • NO 25 • 2017 Boerbok Joernaal 01.pdf · 6 BOERBOKNUUS • NO 25 • 2017 From time to time people tell me, “lighten up, it’s just a goat” Or That’s a lot

the capacity to produce and reproduce under different natural pasture and climatic conditions.

3. Conformation – standard of excellence

Since 1959 Boer goats have been strictly selected and improved to measure the ideal Boer goat against the breed standards as compiled by the SA Boer Goat Breeders’ Association. On this similar historical foundation the breed standards of the Kalahari Reds and Savannahs were also taken up in the Standard of Excellence of the SA Boer goat. As members of this association we affirm that these breed standards will always be striven toward in the improvement of our goats. In applying these breed standards, the following must be particularly noted:

• The emphasis is on functional effectiveness.

Traits such as movement, muscling, vitality, traits that are signs of fecundity, etc.

Non-functional traits: Poor or no movement, no visual muscling, fat localisation, unfeminine and unmasculine conformation, etc.

• The extent of phenotypical defects determines the disqualification of the breed standards.

4. Recording of Boer goats

Members of the association may own one or more flocks that consist of:

• A recorded flock (Group C or B).• A registered flock (Group A).• OR both.• Group D (no recording and no registration).

The method according to which registration or the recording system will take place is fully set out and discussed in the Regulations to the Constitution.

This process of registration and recording also forms the basis of our breeding policy, as underwritten by the association.

JaarverslagAnnuAl report

I appreciate the opportunity of presenting you with my sixth and final annual report. Six years flashed by and, it’s a pleasure to say, with more highlights than low points. When I look back on the past year, 2016 will certainly be remembered as one of the driest years in history, particularly in our summer rainfall regions. Large and small stock herds and flocks had to be reduced at ridiculously low prices; unrest at our universities with claims almost impossible to meet; Springbok rugby at rock bottom and a progressively weakening rand.

On the flip side we had the DA’s victories in the past municipal elections making us more positive about the future of our wonderful country. To me SA remains the most beautiful and pleasant country to reside in, although everything pleasant and enjoyable comes at a price.

Social media has been around for some time and is gradually becoming a medium people use for marketing and conveying information, but unfortunately it is also a medium for airing grievances and opinions for all to see. I wish to warn breeders to be careful of associating themselves with the medium, as opinions can be taken out of context and have far-reaching consequences.

Once again I want to extend my sincere condolences to members who have lost loved ones in the past year. I believe our Heavenly Father will comfort you and bring relief to assimilate the heartache. Congratulations to those of you who became parents, grandparents, uncles and aunts during the year. May the additions to your families bring you great joy! Congratulations to Michelle, Marizelle and all those who contributed to Boer Goat News No. 23. The journal was

designated the best of all breeds – something we are proud of.

Members – a resolution was made by Council, and as you could infer from the financial report, to terminate the membership of inactive members. In spite of this, our current membership is at 441, with 60 members who joined us in the course of the year. Our membership at the moment is as follows: 351 Boer Goat, 73 Kalahari Red and 17 Savanna breeders. I wish to thank you, the breeders, for your support over the past six years. You made me feel at home everywhere and your hospitality was heart-warming.

Sales and production sales – I believe the National Sale was a resounding success. For the first time ever we exceeded the million rand notch with our turnover of R1 321 099, to be precise. Averages:

Stud rams - R22 666Stud ewes - R11 500Flock rams - R8 361Flock ewes - R5 478

At the National Championship Sale at Kuruman rams were sold at an average of R15 200 and ewes at R20 400. Sales were generally well supported during the year and the demand for top breeding material remains high. During the year 23 production sales were offered, rendering an income of around R135 000 to the office. I would like to see us offering more protection to our buyers in future. Too many complaints reach our office; it does not reflect well on the industry.

National Championships at Kuruman: A total of 952 goats were exhibited by 41 exhibiters, still making us the greatest small stock show in SA. I must confess, I had hoped that we could show 1 500 animals at the show. Our thanks to the Northern Cape Club who hosted the event, to Hennie Booysen for the attractive facilities and excellent organisation, and to Karien for serving delectable meals.

Courses and exhibitions – during the year 12 junior courses with 169 students were offered and 6 senior courses with 39 students. A senior student course was also presented with 22

Die gemiddelde was soos volg:

Stoetramme - R22 666Stoetooie - R11 500Kudderamme - R8 361Kudde ooie - R5 478

Ek dank u.

students, making a total of 230 students. Our thanks to our course leaders for their generous service.

We again exhibited boer goats at Nampo, Agri-Expo and Pietermaritzburg’s Royal Show. Nampo: thanks to Hennie and Hein Booysen for their goats, the office and all those who ran the stall. Pip Niewoudt and Western Cape Club members at Stellenbosch’s Agri-Expo prepared goat meat and served the public, and the renowned Mynhardt of Kokkedore produced a variety of dishes. Our thanks too to Kevin and Vanessa Collocott and the Highveld Club at Pietermaritzburg.

During the year three Council meetings and an Annual General Meeting were held. Thank you very much to management for their support over the past year and to all Council members who were part of management for the past six years. To Lukas Burger, Vice President, my thanks for your support this year. Michelle and Marizelle who run the office are the backbone of our industry and they had a busy 2016; my thanks for your support throughout my term of office.

To my wife Nicolene and children, Anke, Liezl and Derick, thanks for your support and assistance over the past six years; I sincerely appreciate it. A great thank you to our Heavenly Father for keeping His protecting and gracious hand over us; without Him we are powerless; may we extend His boer goat kingdom to the honour and glory of His name.

When we now come to the election of a new President later this evening, I conclude: how much you know does not make you a good leader; how much you care, does.

I thank you.

Boer ekonomies met BoKKemanage your meat goats successfully

PuRChASING GoATS

Before you start building up a flock, thoroughly study the relevant breed’s breed standards. If you are still uncertain, take along an expert to have a look at the goats available. Contact the SABGBA and obtain a list

of breeders in your area and then visit them. It always pays to be fully prepared. Also take note of the following:

Look for animals with good rumen (male and female). The rumen size can indicate how well the animal can handle and digest food. In a healthy, well fed goat the rumen expands to the left, particularly in one that has fed on pasture or hay. Both male and female may appear pregnant after a good feeding session.

Examine the goat’s teeth. The lower and upper teeth must correspond – some goats are inclined to have a shorter/longer jaw, which hampers the act of eating.

In the case of ewes, also examine the udder properly. The udder must be well attached and not swing loosely

Page 70: BOERBOKNUUS • NO 25 • 2017 Boerbok Joernaal 01.pdf · 6 BOERBOKNUUS • NO 25 • 2017 From time to time people tell me, “lighten up, it’s just a goat” Or That’s a lot

ouderdom by speen)

Doeltreffendheid indeks=Produktiwiteit indeks

Volwasse liggaamsmassa ¾

‘n Konstante ouderdom by speen van 80 dae was in die berekeninge gebruik.

INTENSIEf

from the lower body; it must be pliable and soft and not hard. Feel the udder for hard spots as they may be lesions of previous mastitis and she might very well be infected again. The udder must also not hang too low down, as it will be difficult for the new lambs to reach the teats.

REPRoduCTIoN

The conception rate, number of lambs and the ability to reproduce out of season are significant reproductive characteristics for a meat goat enterprise.

Goats generally have a high reproductive rate and conception is not a problem. Various studies have shown that, although twins and triplets have lower birth and wean weights and grow more slowly, what they produced was more than the total weight of the single weaned lamb. Therefore, prolificacy, defined as the number of the lambs born per season, is an important criterion. Goats that grew up in moderate temperature areas are more inclined to seasonal breeding. Female animals come into oestrus only in autumn with anoestrus occurring only in late spring. However, goats from the tropics are non-seasonal breeders and lamb throughout the entire year. The desirable quality of non-seasonal breeding must thus be taken into account in a meat enterprise.

GRowTh RATE

Growth is effectively divided into two periods: the growth before weaning or pre-wean average daily gain (ADG) and growth after wean or post-wean average daily gain. A high prior wean ADG does not only reflect the genetic potential of the lamb, but also the maternal ability of the ewe.

PRoduCTIVITY

Measuring productivity is not the easiest aspect of farming practice and a matrix of various elements must be considered to clearly understand and master this aspect.

The following aspects of pre-wean and growth rate can be combined in an index to render a measure of productivity. This approach is used particularly in the USA and may not be that easy for the beginner producer; he may even be intimidated by the measuring process.

The equation is as follows:

Productivity index =Conception rate x litter size x survivors to wean x 365Lambing interval x (birth weight + pre-wean ADG x

age at wean)

Efficiency index =Productivity indexAdult body mass ¾

Ramme: Puberteit: 5-6 maande Teel ratio: 1 ram vir elke 30 ooie

Different assumptions are made in calculating the index. Goats are very fertile animals and little information on the conception rate is available; therefore the conception rate is taken at 90%. Survival to wean is supposed to be equal for all breeds at 90%. A constant age at wean of 80 days was used in the calculations.

INTENSIVE

This approach is used where there are limitations in suitable land for grazing and numbers usually vary between 20-100 goats. Cultivated pastures, rotational grazing and supplementary feeds are normally used. When this procedure is properly implemented and managed, a lambing percentage of approximately 180% may be considered. Goats may also generally weigh more than in the extensive approach.

EXTENSIVE

The greatest number of goats in our country is farmed in the extensive approach. It is a suitable approach because in general the land is regarded as a semi-arid region and much utilisation of the bush and shrub types of the region occurs. However, the seasonal availability

of feeding has a material affect on production. Aspects such as changing body mass affect reproduction. Commercial farmers give considerable supplementary feeding especially in dry periods.

The physiology of a goat: Temperature: 38.5 – 40 °C for adults Heart rate: 60-90 beats per minuteRespiratory rate: 12-20 strokes per minute Ruminal movement: 1-1.5 per minute Life expectancy: 10-12 years

Ewes: Puberty: 5-10 months Breeding weight: 60-70 percentage of adult ewe’s weightHeat cycle: every 18-23 daysOvulation: 12-36 days after onset of oestrus Gestation period: 144-157 daysNumber of lambs: 1-5

Rams: Puberty: 5-6 months Breeding ratio: 1 ram for every 30 ewes

ThE RAM

Reproduction of the ram

The primary genital organs of a ram consist of two even-sized testicles of the same shape and consistency. They are firm but not hard and can move freely in the scrotum. The size and extent of testicles differ from one ram to the next, and also serve as a basis for the selection of rams for fertility. The testicles are accommodated in the scrotum to maintain a uniform temperature, a few degrees lower than the body temperature. If the testicles are carried against the body, the temperature is too high and the animal is sterile. The formation of spermatozoa is a highly specialised and synchronised process from cells known as spermatogonia. Spermatogonia are present in the testes before puberty; their increase and formation of spermatozoa occurs at the beginning of puberty.

This production system is almost like a production line in the seed formation tubes within the testicle. The tubes are spherical, compressed like a ball of string. The total length of the tube is estimated at about 3 km. No two spermatozoa ever obtain the same genetic material. This and the same system in ewes is the reason for genetic variation among the progeny of the same sets of parents. The entire process of sperm formation and development up to and with ejaculation takes 70 days. This means that a change in semen quality observed now has already occurred in the testes 70 days before. It is extremely important to bear this in mind if problems with semen quality are diagnosed. Abnormal sperm cells are inspected under a microscope during the examination of freshly coloured plates for morphological evaluation of a ram’s semen that can contribute to lower fertility and an increase in embryo mortality.

Rams and fertility

Low fertility and infertility in rams are the results of a series of causes including congenital defects. Some of the causes may be diseases such as Epididimites, Brucellosis, Trichomoniasis, Bivriosis and physical

defects due to injuries.

Page 74: BOERBOKNUUS • NO 25 • 2017 Boerbok Joernaal 01.pdf · 6 BOERBOKNUUS • NO 25 • 2017 From time to time people tell me, “lighten up, it’s just a goat” Or That’s a lot

Proteïen tekorte benadeel jong ramme meer as ouer ramme. Vitamien A of karoteen gebrek lei tot testikulêre degenerasie. Jong ramme is meer vatbaar vir Vit A tekorte.

feeding the ram

The libido and testosterone production of rams that receive low energy feeds for long periods is low. Underfeeding is more detrimental to young than old rams.

Obesity and over feeding lowers the libido. Overweight rams’ feet can cause problems and will thus shorten their lives.

Protein deficiencies are more detrimental to younger than older rams, decreasing libido and semen properties; older rams are not affected that much. Young rams must establish growth and maintenance. Apart from protein and energy, vitamins and minerals are also necessary for good ram fertility. Vitamin A or carotene deficiency leads to testicular degeneration. Young rams are more vulnerable to vitamin A deficiencies. Deficiencies in trace minerals such as iodine, copper, zinc and manganese can also affect libido and fertility.

Managing the ram

• Start with supplementary feeding. (Balanced power feed mixture) 8 – 10 weeks before mating to ensure optimal sperm production. Avoid obesity.

• Regular light exercise in this period to prevent obesity and ensure fitness.

• Inject all rams with vitamin A 6-8 weeks before the mating season.

• Complete all vaccinations and dosing.• Allow the rams to be annually examined by a

veterinarian for fertility and venereal diseases.

using teasers

No small stock farmer can afford to operate without using teasers. This applies to all farmers who have a particular mating season. Teasers are used in the same ratio as breeding rams (i.e. 2-4%) ± 3 weeks before the start of the actual breeding season. Their presence and sexual activity stimulates the ewes into coming into oestrus.

ThE EwE

Reproduction of the ewe

A fertile ewe should give birth every year and, at the earliest age, must be able to breed, conceive on mating, lamb without help and produce adequate milk.

These desirable qualities can be obtained with good management, with a normal ewe, free of abnormality in the structure and function of her reproductive system.

The oestrus cycle (oestrus)

Oestrus and ovulation occur regularly every 21 days in non-pregnant ewes (ewes have a seasonal cycle

Page 75: BOERBOKNUUS • NO 25 • 2017 Boerbok Joernaal 01.pdf · 6 BOERBOKNUUS • NO 25 • 2017 From time to time people tell me, “lighten up, it’s just a goat” Or That’s a lot

from autumn to the end of spring). Oestrus or periods of being on heat is that time which makes the ewe receptive to the ram. Just before ovulation she shows behavioural signs that she is receptive – there is a close relation between the behavioural signs and ovary development that ensures she is sexually receptive during the fertile period if ovulation takes place.

Taking care of young ewes

These are the most vulnerable female animals that suffer most under poor management as they are exposed to a combination of stress factors such as growth, pregnancy and lactation. With proper management and feeding, her re-conception in the following years can be raised.

There are two main aims in raising young ewes. They must grow and develop fast and they must be able to lamb at an early age. The growth rate affects the age at which she will lamb. On the other hand, the feeding level and quality of feed influence the growth rate and lambing time. A replacement ewe must grow well so that she can produce effectively in the course of her life. Limited energy intake in her growth phase delays the onset of puberty. There is a genetically determined mass at which puberty can start and reduced energy levels retards reaching that mass. The disadvantage of underfeeding is its effect on the life production of a ewe.

Pregnancy is confirmed by ultrasonic technique. Pregnancy diagnosis can be accurately done at 30 days after mating.

The fluctuation of feed quality and amounts are responsible for the great variation in reproduction efficiency. Underfeeding is an important limiting factor, but on the other hand, overfeeding and obesity are conditions that must be avoided; they can lead

Page 76: BOERBOKNUUS • NO 25 • 2017 Boerbok Joernaal 01.pdf · 6 BOERBOKNUUS • NO 25 • 2017 From time to time people tell me, “lighten up, it’s just a goat” Or That’s a lot

• Vermy oorvetheid. • Handel entings en dosering af. Spuit Vit. A.• Voeg 2-4% koggelramme drie weke voor

to infertility or low fertility and poor conception. The feeding needs of ewes must be taken into account, particularly regarding energy, protein, minerals, especially phosphor and calcium, and vitamin needs must be met.

Selection of young ewes

Preference must be given to functional effectiveness, such as milk production, mass for age, temperament, conformation and adaptability to the environment. Regardless of milk production, look for soft, silky, subtle udders that are placed high with adequate skin folds with small, accessible teats. The young ewe must be well developed with a good rib edge rib sprung and a balanced conformation. She must look

feminine with good conformation, broad mouth, deep chest and wide ribs, and she must be able to walk well, have somewhat sloping loins, a slender neck and mobile shoulders. Ewes with a masculine appearance must be culled. Discriminate strongly against bad temperament; it may disturb the flock’s tranquillity.

Managing ewes

• Ewes must be well cared for from birth as they often do not fully recover from a serious setback that occurred early in their lives.

• Select ewes before the breeding season. • Give flush feeding 2-3 weeks before the

commencement of mating to establish a mass gain of 5-8 kg.

• Avoid obesity. • Complete vaccinations and dosing. Inject vitamin A.• Using 2-4% teasers three weeks before the start of

mating, along with flush feeding, stimulates the ewes to coming into oestrus.

Selection of ewes for the new breeding season

Selection is based mainly on fertility and functional efficiency.

• Ewes that repeatedly do not conceive and lamb must be culled.

• Ewes with physical defects, damaged vulvas, udders and teats and proven poor maternal characteristics must be removed from the breeding flock.

• Preference must be given to ewes with a history of multiples or young ewes with multiple

Lamtyd

Ooie sal in September begin lam.

performance in their ancestry as this will increase lambing percentage.

• Young ewes must be fully grown for mating from 12 months of age. Conception and pregnancy depend more on body mass and not so much on age; for example, ewes with a mass of less than 33 kg show very poor conception. Body mass for normal conception should be between 40-50 kg. With a body mass of 60 kg or more twins may be expected.

Take note: Body mass of goat ewes is lower

• Select ewes according to wean mass of lambs • Goat ewes are sexually mature at an early age and more fertile between 3-5 years.

Lambing

Ewes will start lambing in September. Pregnant ewes must be under constant supervision so that they can be helped

where necessary. Growth feeding during the last 60 days of pregnancy ensures a good gain in weight in the ewe, larger and stronger lambs at birth as well as heavier and larger lambs at weaning.

weaning of lambs

Lambs are normally weaned at 3-4 months. Weaned lambs must be provided with the best pasture to obtain

optimal utilisation of the young animals’ ability to effectively exploit feed and show a good weight gain. Poor development and growth of lambs can be ascribed mainly to poor feeding and internal parasites. The growth of replacement ewes up to 10-14 months must have top priority.

Management programme from advanced pregnancy up to weaning

heavily pregnant ewes

• Vaccinate against E.coli 6-8 weeks before lambing Repeat 2-4 weeks before lambing

• Vaccinate against Tetanus 6-8 weeks before lambing Repeat 2-4 weeks before lambing

The above is important for ewes lambing for first time

• Adult ewes are annually vaccinated four weeks before lambing.

Birth to three weeks

• Vaccinate against Heart water before three weeks • Vaccinate against Pasteurella at about three weeks • Attach ear tags, tattoo or ear clip • Castration: Elastrator – before seven days, but

preferably between 2-4 weeks.• Provide creep feeding from two weeks

Three weeks until weaning

• Vaccinate Pasteurella booster four weeks after first vaccination.

• Vaccinate against Coryne bacterium ovis & Coryne bacterium pyogenes (optional).

• Vaccinate against Enterotoxaemia. Repeat four weeks later.

• Vaccinate against Blackleg disease & Botulism (optional)

• Castrate: Burdizo or knife ± one month• Dose lambs against tapeworm at about six weeks • Dose lambs against roundworm and tapeworm at

3-4 months.

Controlling external parasites

• Control by plunge dipping, footbath or abdomen dip. Plunge dipping gives best control.

• Ticks, mites, lice, sheep louse flies and blowflies cause problems from time to time and can be treated with any of the various registered goat dips.

Controlling internal parasites

It is impossible to draft a fixed programme because conditions, water supply, grazing, climate, management, etc. differ from one farm to the next and even on one farm. Many dosing remedies are available and a programme against internal parasites on your farm can best be drawn up in collaboration with your veterinarian and representatives of any of the companies that supply these remedies. Regular dung sample investigations and thorough examination of organs at death and slaughter can provide much valuable information.

Consult your veterinarian, co-operation or representative of animal health for the latest

remedies.

Beheer uitwendige parasiete

Kasteer

Plaas

The lamb

As soon as a lamb has been born and can breathe, treat its umbilical cord with a tincture of iodine solution to prevent infection. Look for any defects such as weak jaws, crooked legs and teat faults. It is best to put down lambs with such congenital faults immediately. Male lambs can of course be reared for slaughter. Make sure the retained lamb can suckle immediately. It must ingest as much colostrum as possible to activate its

immune system. First milk ewes with large teats and then give the colostrum to the lamb with a bottle or a stomach tube. Colostrum is rich in nutrients and antibodies.

Lambs have two basic needs: colostrum and warmth, especially lambs that are born small. For such small lambs a little glucose can be added to the warm colostrum. The ewe usually rejects such lambs that

have been handled and they must therefore be bottle fed. All lambs must be marked according to prescriptions as soon as possible after birth.

Castration

If male lambs are not kept for breeding purposes they must be castrated as soon as possible, preferably

before the age of 12 weeks. Male lambs must be kept separate from ewe lambs because they can already cover a young ewe at 12 weeks!

Castration at a few days of age is done by placing an elastic band around the scrotum with a special pair of pliers. Make sure that both testes are in the scrotum and place the elastic band behind the testes against the body. Do not include the teats in the elastic band; they must remain outside the band.

If lambs are castrated this early, they can be reared for longer than three months without the characteristic “ram odour” in the meat.

weaning

Weaning can occur at any time between three and five months. As early as at the age of a week, place creep feed in the lambs’ pen, along

• Weidings waar bok mis as bemesting gebruik is.

Veilige weidings is:

with good quality lucerne hay and adequate drinking water. The lambs will soon learn to drink water if one takes the lead. The goat lambs are naturally fond of lukewarm water and it could encourage them to drink.

Deworm before weaning with a suitable deworming remedy. Examine their feet and cut if necessary. Follow the vaccination programme suggested by your veterinarian.

deworming

Any goat on pasture runs the risk of becoming infected with internal parasites. The most common are

roundworms that infect the digestive system. They lay eggs which are excreted in the dung and thus contaminate the pasture. By eating the vegetation goats are infected with eggs and the cycle starts all over again.

Sources of contamination with roundworms are as follows:

• Where goats utilised pastures for the past years. • Pastures used for strip grazing or used in rotation. • Pastures where goat dung was used for fertilisation.

Safe pastures are:

• Newly planted pastures.• Pasture used by cattle and sheep together, but not

by goats or sheep.• Lands cut for hay.• Grazing down pasture tops that have been cut for

hay.

Goats can tolerate a certain level of infection with roundworms and they develop immunity. However, goat lambs and young goats are sensitive to roundworm infections. Animals that remain constantly stabled and are then suddenly placed at pasture are very vulnerable because they have no immunity and would be detrimentally affected. They will eventually build up a measure of immunity. Symptoms of worm infection: weight loss and reduced milk production.

• Long worms The worm affects the lungs and air passages. The

between phase of this parasite is transferred by small aqueous snails and therefore occur more often in wet pastures.

• Liver fluke Also occurs in wet places. It is best to keep goats

away from wet pastures. If possible, such pastures may be drained.

Goats can be infected with canine tapeworm. Keep dogs away from goat pastures.

when to dose

Goats on cultivated pastures must be regularly dewormed. Just after lambing is a good time for deworming ewes, and at 5 months for lambs.

A second deworming in autumn will ensure that the goats remain free of parasites throughout winter. If they

are kept intensively on pastures, dosing is required every 6 weeks. The best is taking samples of dung for analysis and then compiling a deworming strategy in collaboration with your veterinarian or representative of animal health products.

LAMBING PERIod

Choose the time of year when most food is available until after weaning; in other words, 3½ - 4 months to rear lambs as well and as cheaply as possible. If

possible, see that there will be abundant food for a further 2 – 4 months, as 3 – 6 months is the best age for marketing boer goat lambs which will enable the farmer to retain his replacement goats when food is scarce at that time of year, especially in the totally extensive parts of the country. Try to keep the mating time as short as possible - 36 days - then every ewe has two cycles to get to the ram. It keeps the lambing period short and facilitates management and marketing.

Gestation period: With small stock we assume it to be from 145 to 155 days at an average of 150 days.

MATING PERIod

Before mating

Make sure ewes are not too fat one month before the mating

period so that a growth condition can be established by doing the following:

A Inject or dose vitamins A, D & E three weeks before mating; very important especially in dry periods.

B Give flash feeding by way of (i) reserve camp (ii)

A Spuit of doseer Vitamiene A,D &E 3 weke voor paartyd, van baie groot belang veral in droë tye.

B Gee prikkelvoeding in vorm van (i) spaar kamp (ii) goeie lek of (iii) ‘n bietjie mielies elke dag.

C Sit koggel ramme 9 – 12 dae voor dektyd in.D Spuit ooie teen ensoötiese aborsie 1 – 2 maande

voor paartyd.E Laat toets ramme vir vrugbaarheid.

Paartyd

1. Massa paring

Hierdie stelsel werk veral goed waar bokke saans gekraal moet word.

3. handdekking

Probeer sover moontlik doen wanneer dit koel is. ‘n Ram kan elke ± ½ uur ‘n ooi dek.

4. Kunsmatige inseminasie

Spons ooie dag 1. Bestuur tydens KI. Hou ooie so kalm en rustig as moontlik, beskut teen oormatige hitte, stimuleer met koggel ramme na KI of jong ramme anderkant draad, hou ooie min of meer in dieselfde voedingsomstandighede as voor KI.

LAMTYd

Voor lamtyd

• Ent vir Baarmoeder Sponssiekte 2 – 3 maande voor

good lick or (iii) a little maize every day.C Place teasers 9 – 12 days before mating.D Inject ewes against enzootic abortion 1 – 2 months

before mating.E Have rams tested for fertility.

Mating period

1. Mass mating

1 Ram per 35 – 40 ewes. Very important: try to mate young ewes separately from adult ewes.

2. Single mating

1 Ram per 40 – 50 ewes.

NB: Very important under points 1 and 2 in very warm periods: keep rams in a shady camp by day with some power feed and put rams among the ewes at night. This system works especially well where goats must be penned at night.

3. Manual covering

Try to do so as far as possible when it is cool. A ram can cover a ewe about every ½ hour.

4. Artificial insemination

Sponge ewes on day 1. Withdraw sponges on day 14 and inject ¼ cc DMS on withdrawal in active period March to June or ½ cc DMS July to February. AI at 48, 60, 72 hours. Beware of synchronising too many ewes at a time, because if bad weather occurs during the lambing period and you do not have adequate accommodation, you may run into problems. Ewes that are artificially inseminated on the same day usually lamb in a period of 5 – 7 days. Management during AI: Keep ewes as calm and tranquil as possible, sheltered against excessive heat. After AI stimulate with teasers or young rams on the other side of the fence, keep ewes in more or less the same feeding conditions as before AI.

5. Decide on a lambing season that suits you best. For example, in the Northern Cape the healthiest lambs are those that arrive in autumn. The mating season is therefore from the beginning of October until November (maximum 36 days). The ewes that do not conceive are culled. (Young ewes that mated for the first time must, however, be given a second chance.) Fertility is non-negotiable, and is the most important feature that keeps a farmer farming.

After the mating period

Keep ewes in the same growing condition for the first month to prevent abortion of the fertilised ovum. Have ewes tested for pregnancy by sonar 42 days after mating or take unconceived ewes out with teasers with markers or put reception rams in 14 days after AI.

LAMBING PERIod

lamtyd.

Lammers afhok in groot kraal

before the lambing period. Uterine Blackquarter symptoms are that ewes die shortly, up to 3 days, after birth as a result of extreme inflammation in the uterus.

• Vaccinate for scabby mouth one month before the lambing period for udder infection.

• Two-thirds of foetal growth takes place during the last three weeks of pregnancy, so it is very important to give a little extra support at this time; the same treatment as before mating, namely vitamins A, D & E and flush feeding.

• 180% lamb percentage can be achieved with proper management practice, and many triplets can occur.

• Extra feeding will result in multiples especially being stronger and more viable at birth; that is why the sonar scan is invaluable for indicating triplets and quadruplets and to ensure that each one is born strong and viable.

• In dry periods supplementary feeding after 2 months’ pregnancy is essential to prevent abortion.

during lambing

This is the only time that boer goat farming demands much attention and it is therefore important to keep the lambing period as short as possible to devote full attention; good planning is thus extremely important. Although boer goats are not labour intensive, they respond exceptionally

well to special attention – so plan thoroughly for the lambing period and consider the following methods, or a combination, depending on your circumstances.

Lambs enclosed in large pen

All the lambs remain in the pen when the ewes are out grazing. This system is definitely not recommended as the lambs

are thirsty when the ewes come in; consequently any lam will suckle any ewe. It also makes it difficult for identifying and removing the ewes with poor maternal qualities from the flock.

Surprisingly this method is still often being used regardless of all its disadvantages.

Small camps

Creating small camps with enough food, shelter and shade that are especially reserved for the lambing
