“May sapat siyang da-hilan noon. Tama ang de-sisyon niya noon,” ani Co-juangco sa isang panayammatapos magpaliwanag saSangguniang Panglalawi-gan ng Bulacan na noongnakaraang buwan ay nag-patibay ng isang resolusy-ong nagpapahayag ng pag-tututol sa panukalang reha-bilitasyon ng BNPP.

Sinabi pa ng kinatawanng ika-limang distrito ngPangasinan na “I am nowsticking to the benefit ofhindsight.”

“Economic develop-ment of our country will bedelayed, thousands willlose jobs along with invest-ment opportunities that wewill miss,” aniya.

“Our resolution reject-ing proposed rehabilitationof the BNPP because thatis the sentiment of theBulakenyos,” ani ViceGovernor Willy Alvarado.

to the nation as she wasthe leading pillar of democ-racy in the country, “con-tinuing to fight for cleanand honest governanceeven in her capacity as aprivate citizen”.

Her example of “givingher all for the welfare of thenation” is something thatall of those in governmentservice should emulatebecause “it is what thecountry needs especiallyin these critical times”, headded.

As part of the provin-cial government’s tributeto the first woman presi-dent not only of the Philip-pines but also in South-east Asia, her portrait iscurrently placed at the lob-by of the provincial capitolwhile the flag is placed athalf mast.

Yellow ribbons aroundthe capitol premises havebeen placed as early as aweek ago even before theformer president passedaway. They are displayedprominently at the BenignoAquino, Jr. Memorial Hall

which was named after herlate husband, the nationalhero and martyr Ninoy.

Relative to this, themonument of Ninoy in frontof the capitol has been re-habilitated and transferredto the front of the BenignoAquino hall named in hismemory.

At the San FernandoCity Hall and its environs, yellow ribbons adorn thefaçade and concrete fencearound the MetropolitanCathedral.

This is true as well forthe other municipal hallswhile some business es-tablishments have on dis-play streamers thankingthe late President.

The governor invited theemployees to join the pro-vincial delegation thatwould attend the formerPresident’s funeral onWednesday, August 5.

Yellow ribbons werelikewise given to capitolemployees to display ontheir persons as part of theprovincial government’sefforts to honor what manyFilipinos fondly call “TitaCory”. –Pampanga PIO

Northville 15‘contactors’

NOW THEY want to move in.The Kapitbisig ng Samahan ng Taga Riles

Homeowners Association, Inc. (Kapitbisig) through aboard resolution is requesting the Angeles City Councilto “immediately” effect the relocation of residents alongthe riles to the Northville 15 site in Barangay Cacutud.

These are the residents affected by the North Railproject.

Only last May, the same Kabisig deplored what it called“inhuman” conditions obtaining at the Northville 15deterring them to move in.

In a Kabisig-guided tour of the area, Councilors JaySangil and Ruben Maniago were so moved at the trulysorry condition of the houses that Sangil uttered: “It’slike a deplorable evacuation center for Mount Pinatubovictims all over again.”

The pictures that were taken to the media were morethan enough to affirm Sangil’s observation, as we wrotethen: “Tin roofs so thin as to be dented by a cat’s paw,and leak in a drizzle. Beams and posts patterned afterPisa’s tower – leaning in all directions. Walls crochetedwith cracks, in various stages of collapse. Unreinforcedfloors upon uncompacted soil made uneven by cracks.Drainage systems that act as catch basin for rain water.Flooded roads.”

“It’s as if families were rushed to be evacuated in anarea ill-prepared, just like in the days of the MountPinatubo eruptions, where more people died fromailments at evacuation centers than from the directeffects of the eruptions.” So Sangil said.

One beneficiary named William David lamented:“Perhaps the government did not really mind what kindof houses we are to live in because we are merelysquatters.”

In a later inspection, Vice Mayor Vicky Vega-Cabigtingclarified that the council was not against the Northville15 project but “just wants the place to be truly liveablefor humans.”

Hence, the city council request for the NationalHousing Authority to suspend the relocation of thesettlers, pending the repair of the houses and facilitiesand the improvement of the site.

So Kabisig now wants the council to lift whateverrestriction for them to relocate.

So have the contractors – denounced in May-Junefor sloppy, deplorable work – made the necessarycontrition and improved on their construction?

Better call on Super Sangil to make one wide sweepof the area and hear his recommendations.

Already we are hearing some insinuations that theKabisig “change of heart” had little to do with theconstructing but everything about “contacting.” Whateverthat means.

ON AUGUST 5, 1962, movieactress Marilyn Monroe isfound dead in her home in LosAngeles. She was discoveredlying nude on her bed, facedown, with a telephone in onehand. Empty bottles of pills, prescribed to treat her depres-sion, were littered around theroom. After a brief investigation,Los Angeles police concludedthat her death was "caused bya self-administered overdose ofsedative drugs and that themode of death is probable sui-cide."

Marilyn Monroe was bornNorma Jean Mortenson in LosAngeles on June 1, 1926. Hermother was emotionally unsta-ble and frequently confined toan asylum, so Norma Jean wasreared by a succession of fos-ter parents and in an orphan-

Marilyn Monroe is found deadage. At the age of 16, she mar-ried a fellow worker in an aircraftfactory, but they divorced a fewyears later. She took up model-ing in 1944 and in 1946 signeda short-term contract with 20thCentury Fox, taking as herscreen name Marilyn Monroe. She had a few bit parts and thenreturned to modeling, famouslyposing nude for a calendar in1949.

She began to attract atten-tion as an actress in 1950 afterappearing in minor roles in theThe Asphalt Jungle and All AboutEve. Although she was onscreenonly briefly playing a mistressin both films, audiences tooknote of the blonde bombshell, and she won a new contract fromFox. Her acting career took offin the early 1950s with perfor-mances in Love Nest (1951),

Monkey Business (1952), andNiagara (1953). Celebrated forher voluptuousness and wide-eyed charm, she won interna-tional fame for her sex-symbolroles in Gentlemen PreferBlondes (1953), How to Marrya Millionaire (1953), and There'sNo Business Like Show Busi-ness (1954). The Seven-YearItch (1955) showcased her co-medic talents and features theclassic scene where shestands over a subway gratingand has her white skirt billowedup by the wind from a passingtrain. In 1954, she marriedbaseball great Joe DiMaggio, attracting further publicity, butthey divorced eight months lat-er.

In 1955, she studied withLee Strasberg at the Actors Stu-dio in New York City and sub-

sequently gave a strong performanceas a hapless entertainer in Bus Stop(1956). In 1956, she married play-wright Arthur Miller. She made ThePrince and the Showgirl--a critical andcommercial failure--with LaurenceOlivier in 1957 but in 1959 gave anacclaimed performance in the hitcomedy Some Like It Hot. Her lastrole, in The Misfits (1961), was di-rected by John Huston and writtenby Miller, whom she divorced just oneweek before the film's opening.

By 1961, Monroe, beset by de-pression, was under the constantcare of a psychiatrist. Increasinglyerratic in the last months of her life, she lived as a virtual recluse in herBrentwood, Los Angeles, home. Af-ter midnight on August 5, 1962, her

maid, Eunice Murray, noticed Mon-roe's bedroom light on. When Mur-ray found the door locked and Mari-lyn unresponsive to her calls, shecalled Monroe's psychiatrist, Dr. Ral-ph Greenson, who gained access tothe room by breaking a window. En-tering, he found Marilyn dead, andthe police were called sometime af-ter. An autopsy found a fatal amountof sedatives in her system, and herdeath was ruled probable suicide.

In recent decades, there havebeen a number of conspiracy theo-ries about her death, most of whichcontend that she was murdered byJohn and/or Robert Kennedy, withwhom she allegedly had love affairs. These theories claim that theKennedys killed her (or had her killed)

because they feared she wouldmake public their love affairs andother government secrets she wasgathering. On August 4, 1962, Rob-ert Kennedy, then attorney generalin his older brother's cabinet, wasin fact in Los Angeles. Two decadesafter the fact, Monroe's housekeep-er, Eunice Murray, announced for thefirst time that the attorney generalhad visited Marilyn on the night ofher death and quarreled with her, butthe reliability of these and otherstatements made by Murray arequestionable.

Four decades after her death,Marilyn Monroe remains a major cul-tural icon. The unknown details ofher final performance only add to hermystique.

Did you know, ikinukumpara ngayon kay Star For All Seasons Vilma Santos ang career pattern ni Marian Rivera? Vi kaya talagang training-to-the-

Medyo hilaw pa siya’t malayo sa arnge si Ate Vi, but in due time, basta lagging mabibigyan ng tamang proyekto, Marian will makeit as a drama actress.

Kaya ngayon, she stars along with Dennis Trillo in Tarot, isang Regal project at dahil dito excited si Mother Lily.

Tarot is not Marian’s first fright flick with Regal. She also starred in Pamahiin three years ago, where she played the role of a ghost

Marian Rivera sumusunod daw sayapak ni Gov. Vilma Santos

in love with Dennis Trillo.

totoong concern.“It’s very scary,” sabi pa ni Mother Lily. “When we watched it, nakatatakot talaga. Mas

And Marian has improved so much as an actress. Ang galingniya! I’m really proud of Tarot.”

Si Marian naman, thankful for all the blessings now com-ing her way. “May bago na akong movie na Tarot, may bago pa akong show na ‘Darna,’ so what morecan I wish for on my birthday kundi sana, tangkil-ikin ng viewers ang Tarot sa sinehan at ang Darnasa TV,” panghuli pa niyang salita.

Flop daw silani Ogie Alcasid…Judy Ann Santoskinakapitan na ng

kamalasan kaya nawalanng takilya power?

“:This goes to show na flop talaga angmovie,”sabi pa ng isang reporter na nakausapnamin.

Ogie should just sing dahil yun angforte niya. But like we say as asinger, puwede mo na talagang dasalan naparang santo si Ogie Alcasid.

We don’t like to think nasi Ryan Agoncillo ang pinatutungkulan ng ka-close niyang reporter.

He said “Cory’s legacyis bringing back the Dem-ocratic institutions in thecountry.” He describedAquino “as a committed, sincere, honest and kindleader.”

Rodriguez disclosedthat he and the first wom-an president in SouthEast Asia had been closesince the late 80’s whenhe was provincial admin-istrator.

GREAT PRESIDENTMeanwhile, Mayor

Marino “Boking” Moralesdescribed the late formerPresident Corazon “Cory”Aquino as a “great leader”following the concelebrat-ed Mass at the church inXevera-Mabalacat Northon Tuesday.

“This Mass is for her.She is a deeply religiousperson more than anythingelse,” said Morales. Heasked Fathers Ed Laxam-ana, Chito Carlos andRoel Dizon to celebrate theMass for Aquino.

“An upright person, both in her private life and

during her tenure as pres-ident, Tita Cory signifiedan enduring symbol oftruth, justice and compas-sion, even in the face ofseemingly insurmountableodds and challenges andemerged triumphant overall of these,” said Moralesin his speech.

He added that she wasan “icon of democracy notonly in the Philippines butalso for the world.”

Morales said Aquinohad frequently visited thistown when she was presi-dent. He added that Aqui-no had supported his con-stituents all-out after theeruption of Mt. Pinatubo in1991.

Joining Morales in theMass were Vice MayorPros Lagman, formerCouncilor Liza Pineda andother municipal officials.

the Loyola School of The-ology wrote about Mrs.Aquino’s devotion to theBlessed Virgin Mary.

The article, writtenwhen Mrs. Aquino was stillhealthy, can be found inthe websitemariansolidarity.com un-der the topic Ave Maria.

Arevalo recalled that inSeptember of 1986, JaimeCardinal Sin and thenAmbassador to the Vati-can Howard Dee orga-nized at Fatima in Portu-gal an International Theo-logical Symposium on“the Alliance of the Heartsof Jesus and Mary.”

He said that Sin andFr. Socrates Villegas tooktime out from the sympo-sium to visit Sr. Lucia dosSantos, one of the threevisionaries of Fatima in1918, in her Carmeliteconvent in Coimbra, Por-tugal. The visit was madepossible with the help ofthen Cardinal JosephRatzinger, now PopeBenedict XVI.

“Sister Lucia…was re-ally happy to talk with theCardinal. She had beentold of the People Powerevents, and she assuredthe Cardinal that she andthe other Sisters hadprayed—prayed much—for our people’s peacefulliberation from the dictator-ship. She seemed to bewell informed about EDSAUNO,” Arevalo wrote.

He recalled that “Sis-ter Lucia did something theCardinal did not expect. She took out a rosarywhich (she said) she her-self made, bead by bead. She wanted Cardinal Sinto give it as her personalgift to Mrs. Aquino.”

“Tell her (Mrs. Aquino)to take good care of it,”Sister Lucia told Sin. “Itwas a promise of Our La-dy’s blessing on PresidentCory during her presiden-cy and beyond,” Arevalonoted.

Arevalo said that “OurLady had held it (the rosa-ry) in her own hands.” Herecalled that CardinalTarcisio Bertone, SDB,

FROM PAGE 1

Virgin Mary held same rosary...who was then VaticanSecretary of State and hadofficially interviewed SisterLucia more than once be-fore her death on Feb. 13,2005 once said that thenun continued to be visit-ed by the Blessed Virginafter the initially appari-tions in Fatima.

“Some of the Sisters(in Sister Lucia’s convent)believe that Our Lady, dur-ing one of her visits, heldthe rosary in her ownhands and blessed it forMrs. Aquino, promisingher presence and strengthto her in times specially ofsuffering and need. That iswhy Sr. Lucia remindedTita Cory to take goodcare of the rosary. OurLady had held it in her ownhands,” Arevalo said.

He quoted Mrs. Aqui-no as later saying” “SisterLucia sent me this rosarywhich she herself made, with the message that Iwould be supported andprotected in my presiden-cy.

She added, however, that more suffering wouldcome my way. I now knowthat it was a propheticmessage, as I had to fightback seven coup attemptsto save my administrationfrom power-grabbers inuniform.

With Our Lady’s pro-tection, I stood my groundand never left Malacañang, even when it was beingattacked.”

What Arevalo did notknow at the time he wrotethe article was that Mrs.Aquino was to suffer thepain of colon cancer beforeher peaceful death lastAug. 1, the first Saturdayof August, which com-memorates on the 15ththe assumption of theBlessed Virgin Mary intoheaven.

Mrs. Aquino wasknown to have also fulfilledthe so-called First Satur-day devotion sought bythe Blessed Virgin at Fa-tima as assurance of sal-vation for one.

Arevalo also recalledthat after her presidency in1992, Mrs. Aquino, togeth-er with her daughter Kris,

went to Fatima to join the75th anniversary of theFatima apparitions. Shewas able to personally talkto Sister |Lucia, with theformer Father General ofthe Comboni Fathers, Fr.Manuel Lopes

Again, Arevalo quotedMrs. Aquino as later relat-ing: “When I visited SisterLucia in 1992, the firstquestion she asked mewas, ‘Do you still have therosary I sent you?’ I re-plied, ‘Yes, but right nowa niece who lives in Bos-ton and is hoping to havea baby is borrowing it.’ –Ifeel so blessed and privi-leged to have this bond withFatima and so I sharedthis rosary with relativesand friends.”

The remains of Mrs.Aquino holds a rosary, butit is reportedly not thesame rosary gifted her bySister Lucia. She was re-ported to have lent the ro-sary to many other peopleseeking favors from theBlessed Virgin, amongthem the late Star colum-nist Teddy Benigno.

Arevalo also quotedMrs. Aquino as naming“three secrets” of Fatimathat she and her late hus-band, national hero NinoyAquino had once discov-ered.

He quoted Mrs. Aqui-no naming the secretsthus:

-“First is the power ofprayer, especially the dai-ly praying of the rosary ofOur Lady.

-“Second is the accep-tance in faith of God’s planin our own lives, and theentrustment of our lives toMary.

-“Third is the spirit ofsacrifice to carry outGod’s designs, after theexample of Mary, offeringpersonal sacrifice for agreater good toward God’spurposes.

Sister Lucia dos San-tos died in Coimbra on 13February 2005. She hadearlier witnessed the be-atification of the two otherFatima visionaries, her twocousins, Francisco andGiacinta Marto, May 13,2000 in Fatima.

CLARK FREEPORT – A repre-sentative and member of theKuwait Ruling and Royal Fami-ly has cited the country’s sta-ble economy saying the Philip-pines “is a great country for in-vestments.”

Sheikh Ahmad Dawood Sal-man Al Sabah, a member of theKuwait Ruling and Royal Fami-ly and the representative of theState of Kuwait, said he was, atfirst, “doubtful” in investing in thecountry but however changedhis mind when he came to thecountry.

“But I saw something reallydifferent…we saw stability anda lot spending money and pur-chasing power…then I becamea believer,” said Al Sabah duringan interview with veteran broad-caster Angelo “Sonny” Lopez, Jr.in his cable program AksyonCentral Luzon Special Editionaired over PEP TV Channel 3.

Al Sabah said he was im-pressed with other Clark com-panies like Texas Instrumentsciting its huge compound andemployment generation and alsoSingapore Airlines.

“There’s a mini boom inClark,” Al Sabah said citing theincrease in flights at the Dios-dado Macapagal InternationalAirport (DMIA).

Al Sabah said had alreadyadvised other Kuwaiti investors“to look seriously” at Clark and“consider it as a prime invest-ment area.”

“They didn’t miss the boatbut my advice to them is to real-ly look at this area seriously,” AlSabah said.

Al Sabah also commendedthe “transparent business trans-actions” inside the Clark Free-

port saying “It’s a good deal foreverybody to be here.”

“I am a very big believer ofthe Philippines and its poten-tials… Everybody’s putting[their] money here,” noted AlSabah.

Aside from identifying thecountry as “a great country forinvestments,” Al Sabah stressedthat investors and governmentofficials should be “straightfor-ward” when transacting businessto build a positive reputation.

“You have to be straightfor-ward in these kinds of [business]transactions. That’s how youbuild a reputation. That’s my ad-vice for everybody to do,” Al Sa-bah said, adding that “KGL is a

success story in Kuwait. Andeverybody wants to be a part ofit.”

Dennis Wright, president ofPeregrine Development Interna-tional – the site developer, saidhe agrees with Al Sabah.

Wright said “One of the at-tractive features of the Philip-pines is that it’s a relativelystraightforward business envi-ronment to operate in.”

He also said companies in-side and outside the Clark Free-port attest that “they operate fineand they’re making money.”

In August 2008, PresidentGloria Macapagal-Arroyo led thegroundbreaking ceremony of the$1.025 billion Global Gateway
