Caraway slaw and orange and Peach Chutney DressingServes 6I love the warm, sweet, almost peppery aroma of caraway seeds, with their hint of aniseed. And you can taste the sunshine in the sultanas… INGREDIENTS:For the dressing:• 2 cloves garlic, crushed• 10 ml orange zest• 5 ml ginger, freshly grated• 1 red chilli, sliced• 3/4 cup freshly squeezed orange juice• 2 tbls Wellington’s red wine vinegar• 1/4 cup sesame oil• 1 tbls honey• 2 tbls Wellington’s Peach Chutney• Salt to taste

Place all ingredients in a food processor and blend.The slaw:• 3 large green apples, skin on, sliced• 250 g green cabbage, finely shredded• 250 g red cabbage, finely shredded• 1cup walnuts, toasted• 1/2 cup sunflower seeds, toasted• 1/2 cup sultanas• 6 spring onions with tops, roughly chopped• 1/2 cup mint, chopped• 2.5 ml caraway seeds, toasted and crushed (optional)

METHOD:Toss all the ingredients together and mix well with the orange dressing just before serving.

5 WAYS TO KEEP YOUR POOL ALGAE FREE DURING THE SUMMER HEATWell it’s that time of year folks. Summer is here, vacations are being taken left and right, the heat is on, and for some pool owners, this all can equate to that green thing that makes pool ownership a frustrating experience … Algae!With today’s technology, there’s really no reason anyone should be having problems with algae in the first place.Here is your summer survival list of 5 keys to ensuring your pool doesn’t have problems with the “green monster” during these hot months:

1. Keep your sanitizer levels up!!! For most, this means your chlorine needs to be kept at optimal levels, all day, every day. This is also why we’re such big advocates of salt chlorine generators at River Pools, as they manage to keep a consistent level of chlorine in the pool at all times, preventing the growth of algae in the first place. And for those of you not using salt, make sure to shock your pool at least weekly during this time of year.

2. Keep the water moving: One key to remember is that algae likes to start when water stops, which is why it’s a good idea to always keep your pool water filtering. This is also why most modern pools have variable speed pumps, which allows constant water flow without the high energy usage.

3. Use the pool: Did you know often times the best way of keep a pool clean and free of debris is by swimming in it as much as possible? Yep, that’s certainly the case, and it’s because swimmers stir up the water and debris, allowing the skimmer to catch more particles and ultimately filtering the pool better.

4. Keep an eye on your filter: This goes back to #2, but if your sand or cartridge get too clogged up, the water will slow down, which can hurt filtration as well as chlorine production...which is bad news.

5. Add an algaecide weekly: Although this isn’t always necessary, it’s another means of algae prevention, and something that certainly won’t hurt your chances of having a hassle-free summer with your pool.

So there you have it, 5 ways to keep your pool algae free during the hot summer months.

Dié voormalige Springbok, Westelike Provinsie-speler en hulpafrigter van die Blou Bulle en die Namibiese Wêreldbekerspan sê hy is verskriklik opgewonde oor sy betrokkenheid by sy Alma Mater. Pieter sal deur Helmut Lehman, oud-Matiekaptein en voormalige Westelike Provinsie-speler bygestaan word. Volgens mnr. Eddie Bateman, skoolhoof by Paarl Gimnasium, is hul meer as tevrede dat hulle die regte aanstelling gemaak het. “Pieter se ondervinding, kennis en visie sal van onskatbare waarde wees om rugby by Gimnasium te bevorder en verder te ontwikkel.” sê hy. CAMI MATHS SPEED CHALLENGE

Tydens die onlangse Suid-Afrikaanse Trampolien Gimnastiek Kampioenskappe te Pretoria, gehou 5-10 Oktober is, Alex Stewart verkies as lid van die Team of South Africa trampoline in die 9-14 jaar afdeling. Sy gaan 10-14 Desember in Johannesburg deelneem teen spanne van Namibia, Mozambique en Zimbabwe.

At the recent Boland SANESA prizegiving, Huguenot Primary’s equestrian athletes did exceptionally well:Skye Austin received a gold medal for the Working Riding catogory in Level 3 and a silver medal for Dressage in Level 3. Die Laerskool Noord-Eind se o/13A- krieketspan het die naweek van 16-17 Oktober aan Riviersdal se 6-’n-kant kriekettoernooi deelgeneem. Noord-Eind het puik gespeel en het die finaal met 3 paaltjies gewen.

O/13A- KRIEKETSPAN Wessel Roos het in die afgelope Feedem Pitseng T20 Toernooi in Worcester gespeel vir Boland Hanepoot. Daarna gekies vir Boland o/13A wat in Desember in Johannesburg gaan speel in Nasionale Toernooi. Hy het ses Pro 20 wedstryde gespeel en 418 lopies aangeteken teen ‘n gemiddelde van 104,50 per beurt omdat hy 2 keer nie uit was nie. Tydens die toernooi het hy ook 2 honderdtalle aangeteken 128 nun en 101 nun. Hy het ook 11 paaltjies in die ses wedstryde geneem. Hy is aangewys as speler van die toernooi.

FEEDEM PITSENG T20

Mnr Franz Waso het ses van WA Joubert se graad 6- en 7leerders vergesel na ‘n woordeboekkompetisie wat in die Paarl Biblioteek gehou is. Ons graad 7-groep (Danelle Venter, Georgia Blanckenberg en Tyrese Fairbrain) het die eerste plek uit 13 skole behaal. Die skool het ‘n geskenkbewys van R2000 van LAPA-uitgewers ontvang asook elke leerling ‘n interessante geskenkpak. Baie geluk aan hierdie leerders.

WOORDEBOEK KOMPETISIEOns skool se eerste Redenaars-kompetisie het verlede Donderdag plaasgevind. Sewentien leerders het baie dapperheid en entoesiasme aan die dag gelê en pragtige toesprake gelewer. Baie dankie aan juffrou Elzanne Visser (onderwyseres) en Carolina v/d Westhuizen van Kansvatters-redenaars vir hulle harde werk om die kinders hiervoor voor te berei.

REDENAARSDie graad 7’s het verlede Vrydag ‘n heerlike speletjiesdag by die skool aangebied. Daar was genoeg pret asook eetgoed sodat hulle skoolmaats na hartelus kon baljaar. Dankie graad 7’s, julle is wenners!!

Drie van ons leerders het op 17 Oktober te Malmesbury deelgeneem aan Tweekamp tydens die eerste byeenkoms vir die 2015/2016 seisoen. Stehanus Rossouw het ‘n teede plek behaal in die afdeling vir seuns onder 11 toe hy een punt agter die wenner geeindig het met 2003 punte. In die dogters onder 8 afdeling het Simone van der Merwe ook ‘n tweede plek behaal met 2050 punte. Marlie van Lierop het ‘n derde plek behaal in die afdeling vir dogters onder 11 met ‘n totaal van 2043 punte. Die volgende byeenkoms het plaasgevindvind

Goeie opvoeding bestaan nie net uit akademie en sport nie, maar moet ‘n wye ervaringsveld dek. Die wêreld moet vir die leerders oopgemaak word. Dis waarom uitstappies so ‘n belangrike deel van La Rochelle se program uitmaak. Gr R het dus onlangs besoek afgelê by Polkadraai Padstal en die aarbeie geniet. Ons Gr 3-leerders was by Henties Vrugtesap en het die proses van vrugtesapmaak en bottellering waargeneem.

Op Vrydag 23 Oktober het La Rochelle se Interhuis-atletiekdag plaasgevind. Rekords is gebreek en die atlete het goed presteer en die dag geniet.

Emma Pieters from Courtrai Primary School was one of 8 children in the Cape Region that took part on the day. She is only in grade 1 and competed in the PAMA MINI level – doing up to 30 double x single multiplications in only 3 minutes with the help of her abacus. (eg. 47 x 6 and 27 x 4) Emma has shown a natural love for mathematics and through the programme has enhanced this ability, she was awarded a Champion Trophy, placing her in the top 20% of her age level in SA.
