October is National Family Health Month! Our health is important to us so we need to better take

care of ourselves and our family.

We can start with eating healthier and having healthy eating options for our family. This can be done by eating five fruits and vegetables each day whether that be fresh, frozen or canned. Instead of having sugary drinks, sodas, and sugary juices switch to low fat diary products and opt out to have healthy snacks instead of junk food. It’s also important to give the proper portions of food to to our children and ourselves. Cut down on the fats, get lean meats and poultry, and eat together as a family. We need to start early with our children, we can do this by involving them in the process, being a good role model for them, and having the right foods and snacks available for them.

The best way to do portions for children and us is to use a divided

plate. The plate should be divided into four parts the first top half should be protein and then whole grain pastas, then the rest should be for fruit and veggies.We can keep our families healthy with exercise, preventive care, being attuned to our bodies, avoid smoking and smoking around children.

Adults from the age of 18-64 need to exercise 2 and half hours a week with aerobic exercises and 10 minutes at time as a minimum, but it’s best to do 5 hours a week of moderate aerobic exercise.

For children 6-17 years of age they need up to 60 minutes a day of physical activity. Children should try to incorporate exercise that help strengthen bones and muscles.

Children 2 to 5 years of age don’t really have a recommended amount of time but, it’s safe to say that they should play actively as well. 9 FUN WAYS YOU CAN EXERCISE AS A FAMILY:1. Go for a pre or post dinner walks2. Make a game out of chores3. Turn commercial breaking into fitness breaks4. Dance to music5. Walk the dog together6. Have the kids work in the yard with you7. Garden together8. Have a weekly sports night9. Do a charity run or walk

Sesame-seared tuna with a Sweet and Sour TwistServes 4The tuna needs to be fresh and deep red – and I mean really fresh. INGREDIENTS:• A little oil for searing• 1 tbls, fresh ginger, grated• 2 cloves garlic, crushed• 2 spring onions with tops very finely chopped• 1 tsp sesame oil• 1 tbls soy sauce• ¾ cup Wellingtons Sweet and Sour Sauce • 4 thick slices of raw tuna• 2 tsp sesame seeds, toasted METHOD:Mix all the ingredients together, except the tuna and sesame seeds. Lay the tuna in the marinade for 15 minutes, turning once.

Remove the tuna from the marinade and set aside.

Oil a grill pan lightly and sear the tuna on both sides – don’t take it beyond medium, it is better served rare.

Heat the leftover marinade in a small saucepan and drizzle over tuna. Sprinkle with sesame seeds and serve with sticky rice and stir-fried vegetables.

Dit is ‘n baie groot eer en prestasie dat NB-UITGEWERS ‘n skrywerskontrak met twee van Hugenote se leerders gesluit het vir hul nuwe verseboek, genaamd RYMPIES VIR PIKKIES EN PEUTERS. Dit beteken dat die twee leerders se name langs bekende digters soos Jaco Jacobs en Riana Scheepers in die verseboek sal verskyn.

Stefan het in die 65cc-klas deelgeneem en het tweede in die nasionale kampioenskap en eerste in die streekskampioenskap gekom. Hy loop voor in die streekskampioenskap en is tot dusver die algehele wenner.

Verskeie Landboukursusse is vanaf 13 – 15 Oktober 2015 by Boland Landbouskool aangebied. Die onderskeie opleidingsgeleenthede dra by tot die praktiese assesserings van die onderskeie Landbouvakke wat aangebied word. (Landbouwetenskap, Landboubestuurspraktyke en Landboutegnologie.) Die skool se landbou-afdeling het ‘n praktiese les aangebied waar die Gr. 8- en Gr 9-leerders geleer het hoe om hoenders te slag. Die leerders het meer geleer oor die verskillende stappe wat gevolg moet word om ‘n hoender te slag, asook hoe die dier se spysverteringstelsel werk. Hierdie groep het ook ‘n lesing ontvang wat deur Jansie Steenkamp aangebied is oor die beheer, bestuur en jag van probleem-diere op plase. Cape Gate Draad- en staalwerke het vir twee dae met die gr 10-seuns gewerk. Hulle het ‘n draadspan en algemene draadwerk-

kursus aangebied. Drie spesialiste het oor twee dae met die seuns gewerk en belangrike teoretiese - sowel as praktiese vaardighede vir hulle aangeleer. Die Gr. 10 Landboubestuurpraktyke-klas het Star Grow se kwekery op Citrusdal besoek. Leerders het ‘n lesing gehad oor verskillende metodes om plantmateriaal te vermeerder asook te verbeter. Daarna het die leerders prakties gedoen wat die enting en okulering van vrugtebome behels het. Die leerders kon elkeen hulle ge-ente boom terugneem plaas toe. Agrimotion het ‘n baie interessante lesing en prakties vir ons gr 11-seuns aangebied. Hulle het die kennis wat die seuns in die klas leer in die praktyk gedemonstreer. Hier is ‘n grondwetenskaplike besig om ‘n profielgat te analiseer. Die Gr. 11-leerders was ook by ‘n wolskool en vleisbees-evalueringskursus wat beide deur BKB aangebied is.

OCTOBER IN THE GARDENGardening is all about dreaming and seeing pictures in your mind, and then having the patience and energy to turn it into reality. If you dreamt, saw, and did it, the reality will be right in front of your eyes in a glorious October garden.7 HOT GARDEN TIPS:1. Do not mow your lawn for a week prior and a week after spraying it with herbicides. This might irritate you, but it will give the herbicide the best chance to

deal with the abundance of pesky weeds which sprouted during winter.

2. Start mulching your garden, leaving no bare earth uncovered – this will help the garden cope with high temperatures and hot summer winds to come. Watch out for red spider mite on roses, fuchsias and Azaleas.

3. Now that waterblommetjies are starting to go dormant in ponds, try something grassy around the edge and in the water. Go for tufty Juncus effusus, a perennial grass- or reed-like plant which loves growing in streambeds and marshes.

4. For colour all summer, plant pelargoniums! These beauties like plenty of light, well drained soil, water when the soil feels dry and good air circulation. Feed them every two weeks with a water

soluble fertiliser – they are very tough, but very hungry plants!

5. Spray your apple and pear trees towards the end of the month for coddling moth. Keep on watering citrus trees regularly and deeply.

6. Cucumbers are quick growers and ready for harvesting in only 2 months. They can be planted in the garden or in pots as they grow upwards and do not take up much space. Ensure that soil is well composted and kept moist.

7. Fine Mediterranean herbs to grow are Rosmarinus ‘Tuscan Blue’ with its lovely sky blue flowers and long stems (which can be used as fragrant skewers for sosaties), Santolina chamaecyparissus (cotton lavender) with aromatic, lemony smelling, grey foliage and mustard yellow pompom flowers.

The agricultural class of Paarl Boys’ High visited the Agri Mega Week in Bredarsdorp , this Expo focuses on the wonder of agricultural business. It is held annually in its current format since 2003 and originated from a farmers’ day in 1993. Since then, its developed into the biggest expo of this nature in the southern parts of South Africa. The learners had the opportunity to take part in this expo, attending several demonstrations, workshops and conferences.

JG de Bruin (regs) en De Wet Wolhuter het die vakansie aan die Suid-Afrikaanse Stoeikampioenskap in Mitchells Plain deelgeneem. In die Grieks Romeinse afdeling verwerf JG de Bruin ‘n brons- en De Wet Wolhuter ‘n silwer medalje. In die Vrystel afdeling verwerf De Wet ‘n brons- en JG ‘n goue medalje. JG het ook sy Suid-Afrikaanse Stoeiklere ontvang.

Die Hoër Jongerenskool Paarl het die naweek van 25-26 September 2015 die Genadendal staproete aangepak. Daar het 10 seuns en 3 onderwysers van die skool hul stapskoene afgestof en rugsakke gepak om die twee dae lange roete te trotseer.

Francis Olivier was part of the 0/18 South African team who took part in the International Indoor Action netball tournament in Brisbane, Australia. They played 16 matches in 6 days and achieved silver medals in both 6 and 7 aside tournaments. Francis played link in the 6 aside where South Africa played against England and lost by only 4 goals. She played centre for the 7 aside where South Africa played against Australia and lost with 6 goals. Well done Francis for keeping South Africa’s name high.
