Excavation site “Grube Messel”On Wednesday, September 25, there will be a guided tour to the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Grube Messel”,which is an archeological excavation site.

e Messel Pit (German: Grube Messel) is a disused quarry near the village of Messel, (Landkreis Darmstadt-Dieburg, Hesse) about 35 km southeast of Frankfurt am Main, Germany. Bituminous shale was mined there. Be-cause of its abundance of fossils, it has significant geological and scientific importance. Aer almost becoming alandfill, strong local resistance eventually stopped these plans and the Messel Pit was declared a UNESCO WorldHeritage site on 9 December 1995. Significant scientific discoveries are still being made and the site has increasinglybecome a tourism site as well.1

ere will be a bus transfer to Grube Messel and back. Further information will be given during the conference.

Guided tour and social dinner at Burg FrankensteinOnursday, September 26, we will have a guided tour at Burg Frankenstein, followed by our social dinner duringwhich the travel grants and other awards will be conferred. ere will be a bus transfer to Burg Frankenstein andback. Further information will be given during the conference.

Further activities in DarmstadtDarmstadt is at the same time a university town and a place of art located in a very small area. is means thatwe have a very broad range of activities for everyone within walking distance. Especially Art Nouveau (Jugendstil)and Jazz attract visitors from around the world. A calendar of activities during the evening can be found at http://www.partyamt.de.
