 Fractured Fairytale

Dear Diary,    Today was a bad day but it started well.    This morning while I was feeding my dog, the Big Bad Wolf came inside and played tag with me but he couldn’t catch me.  So he was so angry that he blew my house down!    I ran as fast as I could and ran to my brother’s house but it was locked so I ran to my other brother’s house.  Luckily it wasn’t locked but my brother, who built his house out of bricks, was watching TV.  He made the volume too loud so he couldn’t hear me talking to him. Then I shouted at him so many times so he would hear me.  Then I explained what happened. After that he said “I’ve got an idea, Big Bad Wolf likes chips right?  Then we will show him the chips and when he comes with us, we’ll slam the door!”  So when they showed Big Bad Wolf the chips and Big Bad Wolf wanted to get them, they slammed the door and Big Bad Wolf fainted.

Fractured Fairytale   Today was a bad day for me and my brothers...  I woke up in bed and I had a shower and put my clothes on and went to the breakfast table.  Something was knocking on my door when I was cooking my brother’s birthday cake.  The thing that was knocking on my door was a big, bad wolf!  Both of my brothers ran out of my back door talking about the pig eating wolf.    One of my brothers said “Is my cake ready to eat?’’   “Yes” I said.  Both of my brothers said the wolf blew their houses down and tried to eat them.

 A Letter to Mrs Webster

Class 2T Room 207 Bradbury School 43C Stubbs Road Hong Kong  22 February 2016  Dear Ms Webster  The children in 2T want a swimming pool at the year 6 playground.  Firstly, all Bradbury students can have swimming lessons so we can be better swimmers and be safe in the water.  Secondly, we don’t need to waste time travelling to SIS so we will have more learning time.  Finally, all students can exercise by swimming and become fitter.  Yours sincerely Bianca Tsui

Why a Science Room is Important at Bradbury School   I strongly believe that it is important to have a science room at Bradbury School.  Firstly, we can learn about science and chemicals in a good environment that is good to learn in.   Secondly, we need a science room so we can be better at science so we can increase our knowledge.   Lastly, we could use our science skills to help the environment and some other people.  To sum up, I strongly believe that it’s important to have a science room because Bradbury kids can learn more about science.

The Day I Broke My Arm

When I was 4 years old, I went to the playroom and I saw my brother standing on the slide.  So I followed him and I stood on the slide and slid down. Instantly, I fell off the side of the slide and I broke my arm, so the doctor came. My arm was feeling as wobbly as jelly and I went to the hospital. I was shivering and terrified. However, I thought the doctor would give me some disgusting medicine but instead the doctor injected me and they put a pin in my arm that made a terrible scar.  My scar would stay. Then suddenly I got scared because I thought next time they were going to take out my pin.  Every time I look at my scar it reminds me about that pin that I am really scared will be taken out.

Biff and Chip invited Wilf and Wilma to come over. When they arrived, they went upstairs to Biff’s room.  The key began to glow.  They went through the little house and they started to grow smaller and smaller. “Oh, help!” said Wilma.   They were on a beach and all the children played.  A pirate spotted the children on the beach and took them to a party.  None of the children wanted to go. They hid the key behind their backs but suddenly it began to glow. They were suddenly back home and talked about their adventure.

 The Mysterious World

The dark, stormy clouds rolled in from the dark and creepy forest and the flowers were swaying gently from side to side in the breeze.  Alice was staring curiously around the mysterious world. Suddenly she jumped back because one of the flowers was reaching towards her…

The Three Little Pigs from the Wolf’s Perspective…  I was trying to make the best and most delicious cake for my Granny’s 106th birthday, but I realised that I didn’t have one ingredient, the most important ingredient …  sugar!  So I decided to go to my neighbour’s house.  I went there and I didn’t realise that I had a cold.    After a few minutes, I got there.  Then, I felt a sneeze coming up my nose and… Achoo!!!  The house blew down!  I was so sad but something caught my eye.  I turned, it was a dead pig!  You know what I did? I ate it!  I went to the next house and the same thing happened.  At the third house, after a sneeze, it wasn’t blown down so I said “Can I have some sugar?”  The pig who owned the house was so rude.  He called the police and the police sent me to jail.

In a mysterious forest, there is a lava lake with moss green, light green, golden brown and lemon yellow colours… it creates a dazzling pathway.  For her, it gets more and more mysterious and magical. Then she skids to a halt.  She sees a mysterious bunch of trees.  She sees glass windows and candlelight.  She hides behind the colossal tree, hesitating.  Half of her head says to walk forward, the other half says it might be dangerous.  She sits there procrastinating.  Once again, half of her mind says ‘don’t procrastinate’, the other half says ‘it doesn’t matter.’ Safety always comes first!!! Finally she goes there, to find that it is deserted, but there was a comfortable chair, so she takes a seat.  Then she settles down and finds a spark, shoots it and gets rescued. I leave the story here for you to continue...

I hear the breeze coming towards me like people. I see the towers in the skyline and the towers

reflecting at me.

I am gliding in the light blue sky, hearing people walking and talking.

The snakes are dancing with the other snakes in the bright moon of paradise.  All they are doing is

dazzling dancing.

I felt calm, white fairies pour fairy dust on me.  It was like heaven.  I am running whilst I am singing.

The birds were singing with me.  Me and my friends.

Bradbury School Needs a Canteen

I strongly believe that Bradbury must have a canteen.  All of the secondary schools have one so why can’t primary schools have one?  There are three reasons why Bradbury needs a canteen.  Firstly, some kids in Bradbury live in Lantau and they might not have much time to make lunch so they just get a sandwich.  Secondly, some kids have small lunches, some have big lunches and they might not finish their lunches anyway.  Finally, the Lantau people don’t get enough sleep just to make their lunches.  I hope these reasons explained why Bradbury School needs a canteen.

 Bradbury Needs a Rooftop Garden!

A rooftop garden is a place where kids and teachers can relax and learn how to grow their own vegetables to eat at lunchtime, such as carrots, cabbage and tomatoes.  I strongly believe that it is about time Bradbury students and teachers should do something about getting a rooftop garden so we don’t make the number of vegetables decrease in the markets. There are three reasons why I believe it is about time Bradbury should do something about a rooftop garden.  Firstly, Bradbury needs a rooftop garden because the plants on the rooftop garden can give us fresh air.  Secondly, Bradbury needs a rooftop garden because the plants on the rooftop garden can give us colourful flowers and green vegetables.  Thirdly, because children can grow healthy vegetables and eat them at lunch time, such as cucumbers, tomatoes and other vegetables that can also grow in hot weather.  I hope Bradbury School realises that it is about time we had a rooftop garden!!!

 Bradbury School Should Allow Pets

Children should be allowed to bring pets to school at Bradbury.  Now I will tell you 3 reasons why.  Firstly, pets are very lonely when adults go to work and children go to school.  Then they are bored and the more that happens, the little animals are more affected and this is bad for their health.  If they are very shy they will also be scared.  Surely children will be happier if the pets come to school.  Also, because some children get left out, with pets at school they won’t be lonely anymore because pets attract kids.  Lastly, children will work better because they are excited to play with the pets and will be very happy.  They will also do more work and will have an experience with animals.  Children will learn how to take care of pets.  In conclusion, I think children should be allowed to bring pets to school.

 People Shouldn’t Smoke

I believe people should not be allowed to smoke.  Everyone shouldn't be allowed to smoke because it is bad for you and other things.  After you read these reasons, you will probably think the same as me.  Firstly, lots of people like smoking and get addicted to it and they die because they smoke. If you breathe it in, it will certainly kill you.  Also, after people smoke, they throw the cigar on the ground.  When it rains, it gets in the drain which then goes in the sea.  This would be hideously unhealthy for fish and people who go swimming.  When people smoke, it creates smoke which can give other people cancer.  Cancer is a virus that will probably kill you.  The smoke goes everywhere and more than one person breathes it in. When lots of people smoke, it fills up the hospitals because there are lots of sick people.    I really think people should stop smoking or no smoking should be the law because it is killing a lot of people.

  THREE LITTLE PIGGIES!!!

Once upon a…… ok that’s too much fantasy to start off a story….. rewind zzpp…  There is a family of PIGGIES called Deston, Avery and Zach. They live in PIGVILLE and it is 5:02.  Each pig has his own house.  Deston lives in a straw house, Avery lives in a stick house and Zach lives in brick house.    Then a wolf came.  He peeked inside Deston’s house and yelled, “Little pig, little pig, may I come in??”  Deston yelled, “Not by the hair of my chinny chin chin!”  Frustrated, the wolf huffed and puffed and let out a mighty blow of wind.  But that didn’t kill Deston.  Deston was stuck in the ground.  The wolf whispered, “Meat,” and gobbled up Deston.  There was nothing left but a skull.  Then the wolf came and knocked on Avery’s door and said “Little pig, little pig, may I come in?” Avery yelled “Not by the hair of my chinny chin chin.” Frustrated, the wolf huffed and let out a blow of wind. Again Avery got stuck in the ground. ”Meat,” whispered the wolf and gobbled up Avery.   The wolf was too full so he left out a bit of meat and went to use a napkin to wipe up the blood.    Then the wolf went to Zach’s house and said “Let me in, let me in!” Zach replied “Not by the hair of my chinny chin chin!” Frustrated, the wolf tried to blow down the brick house but failed.  He stormed away never to be seen again.

THE TRUE STORY OF THE THREE LITTLE PIGS

“I think the pigs are guilty because…”

Wait, rewind I’m telling a story.

One foggy day a wolf wanted a cup of sugar,

so he went to a neighbour. The neighbour was

a pig. The pig tracked the wolf and the pig

opened the door and whacked the wolf with a

cloth. The wolf got so mad he threw the pig to

the second pig's house. He walked to the

second pig's house and he found string and he

tied up both of the pigs..

Next he ran to the third pig's house and he politely said, “please may I have a cup of sugar?” The

pig didn’t like what he did to his brothers so he said “NO!!’' The pig did not give him sugar so he

called 911 (in U.S.A.). The police said “I will be coming with a gang of S.W.A.T.”  Minutes later the

pig opened the door “NOW!” he yelled as he tackled the wolf. The police got a sound level meter

and checked the wolf. He was still breathing but he was very sore.

The gang of S.W.A.T. arrested the pig.

The End.

Not yet, one more sentence.  An hour later…it is most likely the pig is in big trouble now.

Year 4 Camp  On December 2nd 2015, 4T and 4H went to Cheung Chau for our year 4 camp.  We put our luggage on a bus and got on the bus that took us to the Central Ferry Pier. Both classes got into their groups and waited for the Cheung Chau  Ferry.  The teachers loaded the luggage onto the ferry. Once we were seated the ferry started to go.  When we got to Cheung Chau we were given our luggage and the classes went into their groups and started walking to the building with the dormitories.  On the way we stopped to have a snack. Both classes did the temple challenge  we had to find things that were in the temple. The classes walked and went shopping for a souvenir with the $50 that we all brought. We did a food challenge, we had to try dried shrimp. I did not like it!  We hiked in the mountains and in the jungle. Once we got there we got into our groups and were taught how to make our beds.  We got our group’s room number and went to make our beds. We had to shower and get dressed and hike down to the Chinese restaurant. The Chinese restaurant was nice.  The food we had was spring rolls, fried fish, sweet corn soup, broccoli, sweet and sour pork and chicken.  When all the kids were done with the food we hiked back to the dormitories. We changed into our pyjamas and played a quiet game and Miss Sun came in at 8:30 and said “lights out,” and we went to sleep.   On the next day we got dressed and went to play outside. After everyone was outside the teachers said to line up in our groups and the quietest group went into the kitchen for breakfast.  We had toast and strawberry jam, sausages, chocolate rice crispies and hot chocolate.  Once we were done we cleaned up, stacked our chairs and went back to our dorms to pack our bags and start hiking.   Once we went down the hill we ended up at the beach.  We had a snack and played on the beach.  We had to take off our shoes if we wanted to paddle in the water. Ella, Emma and I searched for seashells.  After we washed our feet and put on our shoes and headed to the pirate cave.  Once we were there we put our bags down and grabbed a torch from our bags and went inside.  We had to climb down and find our way out. Miss Tarr was at the end taking photos of us. We went back and on the way back we stopped at the beach again and had lunch.  Once we got back to our dorms we got showered and got dressed and went down to the restaurant and had dinner. When everybody was done we hiked back to our dorms and went to sleep.    In the morning we had breakfast and packed our bags and checked that we didn’t forget anything.  We then went out to line up with our bags. When everyone was ready, we hiked back to the ferry pier and went on the ferry .  When we got off the ferry and found our mums & dads, we went home.  Thank you Miss Sun, Mr Harris and Ms Tarr for a very lovely year 4 camp.

The Unknown Delivery to Hell  It was Monday morning, it was beautiful.  Alice could hear birds chirping and the noise of the coffee machine.  Alice ate her breakfast but suddenly there was a ring on the doorbell.  Alice wondered who that was for.  She went to the porch and there was a delivery which kind of looked like a present.  Alice looked at the label and it said ‘To : Plyram, God of Hell.’ “Uh, I remember that name from Myths and Legends.  It said that Plyram is the God of hell!” said Alice in a shocked voice.  She told her parents but they said “It is just a joke.  Just open it up. C’mon, it’s nothing.”  Alice went up to her room with the box.  She cut it open with bright neon scissors. “Aaaahhhh, we’re free, Uhhhhhh!” moaned the ghost. Alice fell backward and screamed.  The box fell on top of her and she felt as if she had been sucked into a portal.  Alice heard a deep voice saying “Close the box and all will be forgiven!” Alice tried to but she just couldn’t.  Then she heard another light voice saying “Ignore this, he is bad!” SLAM!  Alice fell right onto a glass lava floor.  She looked up and saw 2 dementors staring at her with knives.  They whispered into her ear “one wrong move and you are gone!”  There were 5 dementors and the one in the middle had a goblet.  Then the first one said “task 1, you must fight 5 goblins with a knife and you will pass me.” So, she fought and there was a lot of blood but she didn’t care because she passed. The second one said “task 2, you must cut your arm off or you may have a cake and stuff it into the cake monsters!” She had passed as well but got a tiny scratch. The third one said “you must answer my riddle and all will be solved.  There was a man named Shepherd who also had a twin…” “He rode on an animal!” interrupted Alice.  So she passed The fourth one said “Would you die or live?” “Live!  I would live,” answered Alice softly. So she passed again. “Just one more and I am done.” The 5th one said “Pick the right goblet of fire.” Alice picked the 5th because her mother had one.  Suddenly 2 demons came in and took her out and put her through a portal but she saw the golden box go back to hell.  She had figured out that the box was full of dead people’s spirits.  In the wink of an eye she found herself at home but she heard her parents talking to the police about her.  Alice went downstairs then everyone looked at her in astonishment. “My baby, she is home, my baby!” her dad shouted. “Dad, I’m fine ok, OK!” Alice said.   So she locked up her box that was sent, so nothing like that would happen again.  15 years later… Shuffle, shuffle.  Alice could hear something.  She could hear it from the parcel packaging.  Inside was a tiny baby girl.  Alice was wondering how on earth the baby got there but she decided to call the baby Sacagawea.  So Sacagawea became a very famous explorer, known for her kindness and friendliness.  Later in 2016, class 5C in Bradbury started to write about her and I, Juliana, am writing about her right now.

Wrapper von Ribbon tries to ruin Christmas

Once upon a week before Christmas, an evil sorcerer named Wrapper von Ribbon was creating a spell to make everyone think it was Christmas Eve that night.  Almost everyone in the world, including Santa, believed it, except for one  Laura Hamilton.  She was smart enough to realise that it was a week before Christmas so she had to convince the whole world before Santa delivered the gifts.  The problem was  how could she get to Santa in time?  She ticked off the things she couldn’t use, then she had a brainwave.  She could build her own transport!  So she got some bits and bobs and got to work.  Meanwhile, in the North Pole, Santa was getting ready for his first stop  England.  He got all his gifts and set off.  Soon Laura was done, she had built a plane.  She revved up the engine and travelled to the North Pole but Santa wasn’t there.  So when she went back to England she was just quick enough to catch Santa before he delivered the first gift.  When she explained it to Santa, he soon realised and made an announcement to the world about it.  Because of this, Laura got triple the gifts that year.  As for Wrapper von Ribbon, he got what he deserved  triple the coal that year!  Will you get what you deserve?

 Excerpt from a Ship’s Diary

Monday 2 February, 1571

Today I am packing my things for the trip. I want to bring home good trade for my family and country. The ship has

water, bread, some cheese (for myself as captain), raw meat and salted fish . There are still many more things to get ready

for my trip. My bags are packed at least. I have also got my crew together, my maps and navigation equipment. I can't

wait for the day after tomorrow when we set off on the trip.

Wednesday 4 February, 1571

We set off at dawn and the wind was very strong. The sails were at full speed. We thought we saw land but as we got

closer (we went west) we found that it was only an illusion.

Sunday 8 February, 1571

After 4 long, boring days of traveling we finally had some excitement. I found Henry snooping around the food cabin

searching for food as he doesn't get much, so as a punishment he has to walk the plank (my command). So later that day

everyone came to watch. As I came near I saw everybody avoiding one sailor but when I looked I quickly looked away as

I saw David cutting out black skin from his leg with a knife while black blood was oozing out. “Scurvy,” I mumbled

under my breath.”Go somewhere else to do that or else I'll make you walk the plank too!!” And with that he scurried

away. I turned around and saw Harry walk off the end of the plank and with a ‘Splash’ I walked down for my dinner

feast as I was starving. The menu I had was this - Main Menu: Salted Fish, Dried Goat's flesh. Dessert:

Maggoty Biscuits, Slimy Green Water. Special On A Sunday: Sour Wine. Captain Only: Cheese, Turkey

and meat.I really don't want any dessert because it's all disgusting but at least I'm the captain so I get better food.

Tuesday 10 February,l 1571

I really want to communicate with my family but I sadly can't because there is no mailing system. I am writing this in my

cabin because two crew members are having a fight and I can't stop them. I have already tried. I actually have no idea

what they are fighting about. I think I am going to go up and see what they’re fighting about.

Wednesday 11 February, 1571

Yesterday I was really surprised because when I went to see what was happening up top, I went to see the weapons we

had and they were scattered all over the place! I ran up top and saw that we had landed somewhere and my crew had crept

off the ship with some weapons. So I called them back saying “You probably don't want to stay out there unless you want

to take a dip in the water for the rest of your life,” and then everybody came rushing back. The only problem was that it

attracted the attention of the people of the island. I called three of our best men and we went to see if we could do anything.

When we came to the people we tried to communicate with hand gestures as we didn't speak the same language. It was

hard to understand each other but we could pick up a bit of information. I think we are in a place called Africa and we are

on the African Coast. It's late now so in the morning I'm going to try and trade with them.

Thursday 12 February, 1571

We traded lots of our goods today for things like fresh fruit and vegetables. The Africans (I think they are) warned us

that there were pirates on the island and they are pretty near so I’m getting quite anxious. I am real

Amelia Earhart  Amelia Earhart was a famous and a fearless explorer, who always wanted to go outside and                               discover new things. She was the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean.  Amelia Mary Earhart was born on July 24th, 1897 in Atchison, Kansas. Earhart lived in a family of                                   four. She had a sister named Muriel, a dad named Edwin and a mum named Amy. When Earhart                                   was 20, she attended a stunt flying exhibition and after that she became seriously interested in                               flying. With a little help from her mum, Earhart decided she would learn how to fly and then decided                                     she would buy her own yellow plane which she nicknamed the Canary. One day Earhart received a                                 phone call from a pilot. The pilot asked if she would like to fly across the Atlantic. Earhart said                                     “Yes!”  Some of Earhart’s jobs were as a truck driver, a photographer, a stenographer and loads more.                               She was also an author and in 1931, she married her book publisher. After Earhart graduated from                                 high school, she didn’t know what to do. She first went to Ogontz school, then in the middle of her                                       second year there, she dropped out to become a nurse and helped the wounded soldiers from

World War 1. Then, in 1925, Earhart and her mum                   moved to Massachusetts. She went to college there and                 taught English to immigrants.

After Earhart did the long flight with the pilots, she                   wanted to fly the Atlantic again, but instead by herself.                   On June 17, 1928, Amelia flew across the Atlantic                 Ocean. However, the flight was very dangerous. There               were thick clouds, bad weather, and often the wings got                   covered in ice. Unfortunately, Earhart vanished in the               Pacific Ocean 24 hours after leaving Papua New               Guinea. People were so worried that the United States                 government spent $4million looking for her but did not                 find anything. On July 2nd, 1937, Earhart was declared                 dead.

Earhart was a very brave person. She was the people's’ hero because she did what no other                                 woman had dared to do. After Earhart flew across the Atlantic, she made it easier for other women                                   to go out and do things only men had done. She was a role model to a lot of people because of her                                             confidence and her bravery.                                                             Isabelle van Maanen 5B

A Fictional Diary Excerpt from the Explorer, Henry Hudson.

June 19 1611 We have just been released from the ice in the bay. It is starting to get tense on the ship. We are disagreeing with each other. The crew wants to go back to England, but while we are here, I say we should explore more of the bay. There are plenty of fish in the ocean, we can live off of them. I know the crew is sick but they will have to recover. I am trying to explain this to them but they will not listen. My dear John is getting himself into trouble trying to negotiate with them but they just won’t budge. The crew is threatening to mutiny. But soon they shall come to their senses. I feel I am not the captain of my ship anymore. June 20 1611 It has gotten colder since yesterday night. I am staring at the stars, thinking of Katherine and Oliver and Richard. If I float away what will they think of me? The sky is a mix of blues and oranges. The consequences of mutiny are scaring me more than they should. This voyage is not going as planned. I guess I’m off to my quarters now. I need to think about today and what to do next. Tomorrow is the day we head towards England. Maybe delay it somehow? June 21 1611 Last night we lost another crew member in the storm. He was a good man. The sails have to be repaired. This gives me at least a few hours until the departure. I was tumbling and turning all through the night. Water thrashed around the main deck while Eric was making sure nothing was soaring overboard. Tom was with him. While they were out I was checking on John. All I heard was a shriek, then silence. Tom said Eric had slipped on the rushing water and tumbled overboard. I can’t help thinking that could've been me. It is final. The crew is breaking out in mutiny.

Page 36: Bradbury Writing Collection Volume 2

June 22 1611 This shall be my last diary entry I will ever write on this ship. I don’t know what I did wrong. What could I have done to deserve this? If I had agreed with my crew would this all change? I guess I will never know. I am cleaning my quarters up. It is haunting me inside. As soon as we see sunrise John and I will be thrown on a raft along with the sick crew and we will float away. January 15 1612 THIS DIARY WAS LATER FOUND BY JULIAN HOS. Note: These past few days have definitely been a great success for me, It’s a huge honour to have one of Henry Hudson’s very belongings on my lap. It’s even huger to write in it too! If you want to know what happened to the rest of the crew, here is the story. Hudson’s ship arrived back in England safely. They were brought to court but not found guilty. I heard Hudson took his diary with him on the raft. Days passed until I had the courage to find Hudson’s long lost diary. Well, here I am now, Julian Hos, nobody knowing I have succeeded. The world does not need to know I have this diary. Only I do.

Hernan Cortes’ Great Voyage

Hernan Cortes was a famous explorer and conqueror, famous for taking over the Aztec empire, and discovering Mexico.

Picture of Hernan Cortes        Hernan Cortes was Spanish. He was born in Medellin, Spain in 1485. He died in Spain in 1547. Before Hernan Cortes was an explorer, he was the Military Leader of Spain. Hernan got inspired by Diego Velazquez .  This is a picture of Medellin, Spain today

Hernan Cortes’s financier of his expedition was the same guy that he got inspired by, Diego Velazquez. Other people tried to make the journey to Mexico but they never came back! This journey was important because Spain wanted more land and the Spanish wanted to teach the people that lived there the language that the Spanish speak which is Spanish.

Diego Velazquez

Page 38: Bradbury Writing Collection Volume 2

Hernan went on his first  voyage when he was 35 in 1530. Hernan took a boat that most explorers used at the time called a Caravel. Hernan only had one challenge but it was a pretty bad one, His ship got off route! His boat  went up north so he had to go south to get back on route.

Hernan Cortes’ route                      Hernan went to Mexico & Canada, but his trip to Canada wasn’t as important. Hernan brought three things on his voyage. He brought spices, silk and silver.  Hernan Cortes had a war with the Aztecs for land. Spain beat Mexico, and Mexico became part of Spain. Although Spain and Mexico had their problems, when Hernan first landed in Mexico the Aztecs thought that he was one of their gods. That’s crazy, right?  In conclusion, now you know why Hernan Cortes is famous and why he took his great voyage.

Charlie Brown’s Diary

1658 29th of June.

Today we are loading up our cargo and tomorrow we will set sail. My name is Charlie

Brown and my job is as a powder monkey. My father is a sailing master and he came on

the voyage to support me. The boat I’m sailing on is called the Sea Monster.

1658 30th of June

We set sail at sunrise. By 6am this morning the sails were rising, the breeze was pushing

us away. It was like a tornado but only going one way. We're setting off from England to

China for trading. I asked my father why the boat was called the Sea Monster and he told

me it was because this boat could destroy anything in sight.

1658 5th of July

We were in a fight against the French, our sore enemies. Sailors died, gunshots fired,

cutlasses collided. I was not ready for this. I was woken by a scream from the cook and I

realized that I needed to do my job. I got into my clothes the fastest I could and grabbed

my dagger and started loading the cannons with gunpowder at the lower deck. My heart

was pumping with fear, feeling like I was going to die. The cannons shooting cannon balls

were deafeningly loud in my ears. The opposition fired their weapons right through the boat.

I was frightened. After the fight was over I couldn't find my father. The last time I saw

him he was on the Crow's Nest. I went up there and I saw, I saw him, my father,

with a throwing knife in his chest! We had a funeral for him and we buried him at sea.

I cried until there were no more tears.

1658 19th of October

We are 780 miles away from China. We will be there in a couple of days.I am still sad

about my father but I am also excited about what we’ll find in China. I heard that we

are looking to trade with them for their silks and tea.

Explorer Ship Diary

June 15th 1625 I’m Elizabeth Newman and I’m a cabin girl on a ship. Today we are loading the salted meat. I am very nervous about being a cabin girl. Tomorrow we will load the fruit and sea biscuits. I am worried I will get thrown overboard if I mess something up. June 16th 1625 We have just loaded the fruit and biscuits and we are setting sail tomorrow. It is my 13th birthday today and I have just found out all about the ship that I’m sailing on.It’s called The Tornado. I live in Spain and I think we are sailing to New Zealand but I am not completely sure. July 4th 1625 It’s been only fourteen days and we are already lost at sea. The crew is starving, some people have already got scurvy. There has also been a rumour spreading about the master gunner spotting a giant tentacle. He says that the Kraken has spotted us and is trying to blow us off track. The Captain (Gerald Parkinson) thinks that the idea of the “Kraken” is absolutely ludicrous but I believe the master gunner and I am petrified! July 20th 1625 We are running low on food but luckily we spotted dolphins and in some cases dolphins mean land. Our captain is trying to keep our hopes up but everyone is whispering about mutiny and sending him off on a rowboat. I don’t want that to happen because one day he pulled me aside and said something about being related to me, I believe him because my eldest cousin is a captain on board a ship and his name is Gerald. March 2nd 1626 It’s been a year and we have spotted a shape in the distance. I am extremely excited and hope that we have found New Zealand. Also there is no more threatening Gerald so I am delighted. March 3rd 1626 We have just arrived at a beach somewhere in New Zealand and are being greeted by the natives here, I think they are saying they want to give us a welcome feast but I don’t understand their language very well. Gerald has told the crew that we will be searching for gold the next day and probably be leaving a few weeks later. I will definitely not forget this in a hurry!

Apple Tree    I’m Mela. It means apple in Italian, pronunciation: MeLa. I don’t live in a magical place where birds sing to me every morning and the sun glitters on the shimmery river. I live in a noisy city where the grey clouds cover the bright sun and the high towers block every view of the sky, but I do have a wonderful school. To me school is the only place I feel the breeze, the only place I smell the fresh berries in the school garden and the only place where lovely people smile at me as they walk. It’s a place where I feel calm, where I can relax and think no worries.   I hear the cars, “BEEP BEEP!” I see the clock ‘4:16am’ way too early. Still I get up, I go down the creaky wooden stairs to the kitchen. Mom's not awake yet and neither is the sun. I make pancakes. I think Grandma smelt them from her bedroom because she came out to the kitchen counter. “Pancakes Mela?”  I ignore her, keeping my eyes right on the pancake. When I finished making the pancakes I serve one to my Grandma. She’s wearing her pale blue nightgown and her face has so many wrinkles you can barely see her smiling. Her pink fluffy slippers puff every time she moves, her hair is grey and messy like the air outside.   I go to school alone ignoring the strangers smoking while I pass them. The smoke rises in the air and disappears and goes right in my nose.  I cough violently. My mum often says I should go in the car to school, but it will only make it worse I say every day. I reach my school,  I smile. No dirty air, no smoking strangers and no loud noises. As I walk to my classroom I notice there’s not many people in the corridors or playgrounds. When I enter my classroom only my teacher is there, “You’re early Mela!”  She smiles and I smile back. “I’m the first one here right?” I question. she nods as she stares at the worksheets.   I finish school, a bit sleepy. When I try to cross the road I don’t notice the car coming in high speed, “BEEEEP... BANG!” The next thing I’m in a deep sleep...   ...I see a big bright red tree, the roots black as midnight, apples on the soft grass moving to the wind under the tree, the sky painted ocean blue. I reach for it then suddenly I see myself. How is this possible? I can’t be looking at myself in another perspective?! I see myself walking unsteadily on the road. I see the car coming “BEEEEP!” I turn my head to myself, sweating I shout “LOOK OUT.” I could see myself lying on the floor and everybody dashes towards my still body...

EMILY JACKSON AND HER VERY FIRST MISSION TO THE PEARL RIVER DELTA

“Are you ready to leave for the Pearl River Delta tomorrow?” asked Aaron who was a secret                                 enchanter. “ Yesterday when you asked me about your parents and what they would think while                               you were gone, I made a potion that will stop time….. but you can still get on with your mission                                       because you will be in China and the agency won’t get affected either..”  ‘Um…. Aaron there’s one thing I forgot to ask you, what IS the Pearl River Delta?” He sighed and started, “The Pearl River Delta is mostly considered an emerging megacity, the                             Pearl river, which is near the city  that flows into the South China Sea.”   “Oh so that’s what it is,” I said. “I was thinking that it was just a place next to a river where you can                                               find pearls.“ Aaron chuckled and said, “You are a funny girl.” He paused and went into another                                 room and came back with a bottle filled with green liquid.  “Pour this into the river, it will make the water look like it is flowing but when you go to dip your                                           hand, it will feel like a block,”  he said handing it to me.  The next day before I knew it, I was in the jet on my way to China. With Katie at the wheel and Erin                                               working the GPS, I sat at the back playing Candy Crush on my Iphone.  “Bye Emily,” said Katie and Erin once we reached “Wait…… you’re not coming with me?” I said                                 anxiously. “Of course not," Katie answered back, "it's your mission not ours." “Good bye and good                               luck," Erin said as the jet pulled away   “Okay” I thought as I started walking to the hotel that Aaron had reserved a room in for me. An assistant spoke rapidly to me in Cantonese and put my bags in the corner. Her name tag said                                     Jen Lam. I showed her the note that Aaron had given me   She nodded and went into the staff room. When she came back she had brought another assistant                                 with her. Her nametag said Lucy Ming. It turned out that she could speak English, she asked me if I                                       came here to book a room or did I reserve a room. I told her that I had reserved under the name                                           Aaron.   After supper I went up to my room and started reading the book that Aaron had given me.  The title said All About The Pearl River Delta. When I opened it, it said all sorts of things about                                       the Pearl River Delta. I was really fascinated by the part that said that there were 5 dragons                                   guarding China.  This is what it said:A really brave and strong man named Yang fought and forced these 5 dragons                                     to protect China, he put the chief dragon’s pearl into the river and told the dragon that if the dragon                                       moved from there he would crush his pearl which was impossible but the dragons weren’t very                                   smart and obeyed.  I must have fallen asleep at some point because when I woke up I was super refreshed and ready                                     to start my day.

Page 47: Bradbury Writing Collection Volume 2

When I sat down to eat breakfast I was most surprised that Chinese people eat noodles and soup                                   for breakfast. But I wasn’t very comfortable with that so I asked Lucy Ming if there was toast.   In reply she bowed to me and brought me a slice of toast with jam and butter.  Once I finished breakfast I packed a flashlight, an apple, 2 water bottles, an extra pair of sneakers,                                   a jacket, an umbrella and I packed some sunscreen too. Then I set off on my MISSION!  I started walking around to find the Pearl River Delta. L asked a few people who could speak                                   English if I was going the right way.   Finally after an hour and a half I reached a huge flowing river. I was about to pour the potion in the                                           river when suddenly out of nowhere a tall girl with jet black hair jumped in front of me, blocking me.  Immediately I knew that she was the agent of Wayron Aaron’s evil brother and was there to                                     steal the pearl.  “What do you think you’re doing?” she asked “Saving China,” I replied dodging her and bending                               down again to pour it in. “ Not today,” she said, taking the bottle out of my hand and examining it.  “Who do you work for?” she asked. “Just give it back!” I cried. She was really getting on my nerves.                                       “Come on don’t be such a baby I already know, “ she said rolling her eyes.   “Then why did you even bother to ask?” I said frowning and snatching it back. “Why do you want to                                       harm China when nobody has ever done anything to you? Do you realise what you are doing to                                   innocent people? Why are you being such a SILLY BRAT!!!!!!!!” I yelled at her losing my temper at                                   last.  She stopped, taken aback by my sudden explosion. “You’re right, I am being silly, nobody has                               done anything to me. I guess I was just being spiteful,” she said. “ Come on let's pour the potion                                       into the river together.” “Okay,” I said.  “Now no one can take the pearl. China is safe!” I said turning to her after we poured it in. “What‘s                                         your name?” She smiled, “My name’s Keisha, what’s yours?” “Mine’s Emily,’ I said as I put the                                 stuff inside my bag.  When I stood up I realised something “Oh, Keisha I don’t know how to get back!!!” I said looking                                     worriedly at her. “It’s okay,” she reassured me, “you can come on my hover scooter.”  “Wow,” I said once we we were standing on the hover scooter. “You get really cool gadgets.” I                                   really was impressed but Keisha just laughed.  When we returned, Katie and Erin were there and they took us back to the agency. “Your Mission                                   Is accomplished,” announced Aaron.

 My Life Aboard Ship

1762 I woke up this morning only to hear the cries of the captain saying, “no more food mates put down yer anchor Moretta.” All of a sudden a crew member called Johno Liggie shouted in my ear, “lift up anchor! Captain’s orders!” I rushed out of bed to put down the anchor. For the last couple of nights we have had to eat and drink slimy water, dried goat's flesh, maggoty biscuits and sour wine. I did not want to eat anything. Crew members are starting to get sick with scurvy, it is spreading quickly. Two or three crew members even started to become weak. Captain Jonathan Smith has taken them to the surgeon on board but it may be too late. I am a long way from home, I don’t know if I will make it back. Even though I am taking chances, learning new skills and having new experiences I will never forget, I am beginning to wonder if it will be worth it. I don’t feel like myself. Luckily I don’t get seasick, for I am used to the sea, but this is different, I want to evaporate into thin air. Last night all of a sudden the boat started to tilt from side to side, getting more violent each tilt it took. I heard a clap of thunder and saw a bolt of lightning, “will this ever end”? Jonny flew over board and he tried to climb back. Luckily Johno threw him a rope. He looked petrified but climbed safely aboard. Another hour ticked by. We were all hiding at the hull of the ship. I felt sad, scared and alone for I may have had the last chance to see the light of day. Thankfully the storm has passed, and I feet relieved, for maybe I will survive this journey. It has been a really tough time aboard ship though I feel more hopeful that I will make it home…

BUCKLE UP OR ELSE... (The story of a man named Jack at war)

Chapter 1 Long ago in a city far away there was war!

“Soldiers! Prepare yourselves for battle!” The commander shouted.“Make sure you have everything with you for war, especially your buckle. Make sure it’s on! And that’s an order, if you don’t do it up, you might risk your life!” 5 minutes later… “Let’s go, line up! For the war enemies will be here ANY minute.” This buckle feels weird, “I’m taking it off,” thought Jack “CLICK” At that very same moment The emergency horn blew “broo!”“CHARGE!!!” One side said “FOR DREAM LAND (THE GOOD GUYS)!” While the others said “FOR VILLAINTOPIA (THE BAD GUYS)” Jack was doing fine until... Wait a minute I feel a funny sensation in my chest. Wait a minute OH NO! It’s my buckle! 2 Weeks later The war ended the good guys won, well just! They were very close, just the bad guys didn’t have a buckle. So most of them were killed.“VICTORY!!” They all shouted, except for Jack who was in the hospital tent, known as the San. He got badly injured from war all because of his... BUCKLE thought the commander angrily, for he was outside the San. He took it off, he had no protection thought the commander. His commander looked at him, now inside the San. “What, what happened?” He asked, his throat croaking. “Did you buckle up?” His captain asked, obviously knowing the answer. “Yes, um I mean I unbuckled my buckle before we went out to fight. It was itching me.” Jack replied, his whole body trembling with fear as the commander angrily shouted at him. “Well it’s a good thing we won the war!” The commander proudly said in a shouty manner.

Page 50: Bradbury Writing Collection Volume 2

Chapter 2 Jack was in pain, in tonnes of pain! He looked up to his commander, and with all his effort he managed to whisper: “Why is my body so tired, with pain?” He saw his commander's eyes flicker with confusion, and then smiled.“Ah! Well the matron says you’ve managed to break most of your bones! That good ol’ buckle always does good. Why? Your life has a little hope left!” He chuckled, and patted Jack’s shoulder. “I’ll let you rest” He paused, and stopped smiling, looking more like the commander he usually sees, an angry, tough, and bossy commander... “Oh, and you’re fired! If you can’t listen to my rules, then you don’t get to be in my crew. Sorry!” He snarled walking out of the San. “Bu- Wha-? How? No!?” He croaked, with all his might coughing. He fell asleep almost instantly! Jack sadly did pass away, but this is a good lesson: Always listen to the one who is in charge. For instance, your mum says: “Don’t throw that around.” Or… “That’s not a very good idea, I don’t think you should do that!” They say it for a reason, not just for fun. They say it because they know something bad is going to happen. So what have you learnt today? ALWAYS LISTEN TO THE ONE IN CHARGE!

Story Base

This story was made up by two girls, named Elyse Song, and Daisy Daniel. They were friends from school, and whenever they were walking home with their school bags, there were buckles. And Elyse always buckled it up! So Daisy teased Elyse, and that’s how the story started. Daisy made up the story, and every day after that they told the story every time they were going home. That is when they decided to write it down! And we hope you enjoy it as much as we do.
