The comprehensive oeuvre of Heitor Villa-Lobos (1887-1959) combines traditional Brazilian with European art music in a many-faceted way. Besides, he was infl uenced by the cinema and Ernesto Nazareth‘s improvised tangos and polkas. He wrote numerous orchestral, chamber, instrumental and vocal works and is regarded as the most important, most popular and best-known classical composer of his home country.

Ernesto Júlio de Nazareth (1863 -1934) was both a pianist and the greatest Brazilian composer of tango music. Strongly infl uenced by Brazilian folk music, he focused mainly on light entertainment and his dance music is still extremely popular in his home country today. Heitor Villa-Lobos called him ‘the true embodiment of the Brazilian spirit’. Many of Nazareth’s compositions are Chôro laments, a genre that is very popular in Brazil, but it was his tangos that made him famous.
