What is BJJ?Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art, combat sport, and a self defense system that focuses on grappling and especially ground fighting.
BJJ promotes the concept that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend against a bigger, stronger assailant by using proper technique, leverage, and most notably, taking the fight to the ground.

The Basic Gameplan

achieve a dominant position
apply a submission
● Seek opportunities to exploit leverage advantages
● Manage distance to manage damage
● You can still fight effectively off of your back
● Don’t fight strength with strength directly

Strong body, strong mind
“No man [or woman] has the right to be an amateur in the matter of physical training. It is a shame for a man [or woman] to grow old without seeing the beauty and strength of which his [or her] body is capable.”
-Socrates, with minor edits by Justin Nguyen
Learning through failure
Reality Check
“The Iron never lies to you. You can walk outside and listen to all kinds of talk, get told that you’re a
god or a total bastard. The Iron will always kick you the real deal. The Iron is the great reference
point, the all-knowing perspective giver. Always there like a beacon in the pitch black. I have found
the Iron to be my greatest friend. It never freaks out on me, never runs. Friends may come and go.
But two hundred pounds is always two hundred pounds.”
-Henry Rollins
