An artists impression of what the 250m BrightonMarina development will look like

Eventually, there will be 853 homes on the 126-acre site

droom apartments at Brighton Marina cost 461,000>> Continued from page 1

Not everyone is excited;some are downrightunhappy. One campaigner -

worried by the effect onproperty prices that arealready prohibitive tomany and concerned bythe towering scale of thebuildings - has warnedabout a possible AbuDhabi by the Sea.Robert Powell, who

spearheaded a long legalbattle aimed at haltingthe development, quotedMichael El-Kassir,general manager of GREInternational, who hasreportedly said: Giventhat 35% of the demandfor the Brighton Marinaproject is expected to arisefrom foreign investors, the high value-for-moneydevelopment presents

a lucrative businessopportunity for UAE(United Arab Emirates)investors looking tobenefit from the positivemomentum dominatingthe UKs real estate at thistime.Mr Powell has despaired

of planners and politiciansof all parties. Is everyonemesmerised by theprospect of 11 tower blocksrising in the Marina thatcould come to resembleAbu-Dhabi-by-the-Sea?The development was

a star attraction at theRiyadh Real Estate andUrban DevelopmentExhibition in May.GRE Assets said they

have appointed HamptonsInternational as salesagent, specifically fortheir knowledge of the UKmarket for this particularscheme.

It has been an amazingyear for Brighton DigitalFestival. During Septemberthe festival had a record-breaking 186 events, ranging from conferencesand meet-ups, music andcomedy, workshops andexhibitions, and a wholelot more. The diversity of events

that celebrate digitalculture has allowedBrighton Digital Festivaland the dedicatedcommunity of eventorganisers to reachout to an audience ofthousands - giving themthe opportunity to open upto new experiences, ideas, and connections. When I joined as festival

manager in 2013, thefestivalhadneverinternallycommissioned educationor art programming nowafter the second year ofprogramming, and supportfromLaurenceHill, our arts

coordinator, and DonnaComerford, educationcoordinator I can proudlysay that the festival isnow commissioning newwork that resonates withaudiences on a global scale. The Waiting Wall by

Alan Donohoe and StevenParker, which was selectedas a 2014 newformscommission, has drawnunprecedented coverageand engagement from thepublic. The project receivedmore than 230,000 pageviews on its website inSeptember alone, and over10,000 messages that wereshared in the BrightonStation screen installationand online. While The Waiting Wall

attracted messages of love, loss, regret, and joy, themessage I got from theproject is that there is agreat desire from the publicto reach out, connect, andshare. The feedback and

coverage that BrightonDigital Festival hashad this year points tothe festival supportingBrightons reputation as a

hub of digital excellence.I strongly believe that athriving digital economy isachievable only when thereis considered investmentinto the cultural landscapeof a region - allowingpeople to engage withinan environment thatencourages innovation, creativity, and risk-taking.Brighton Digital Festival

has worked hard toencourage these values inboth our arts and educationprogramming. Highlightsfrom our education strandincluded working with

the Royal Institution todeliver a series of creativecomputing masterclasses,to supporting the Spark!Brighton conference, inexploring how technologycan enable bettereducational experiences. These are excellent

examples of how theprivate and public sectorscan work together to makeamazing things happen. With austerity measures

stretching out indefinitelyon both a regional andnational level, it has beenencouraging to see so

many of this years festivalevents arise as a public/private collaboration - justlike the festival itself. This year Brighton

Digital Festival wasmade possible throughcore funding throughArts Council Englandand generous supportfrom private enterprises,

including our PremierSponsor EDF Energy. As I look to the future of

Brighton Digital Festival,my hope is thatwe continueto showcase the incrediblepassion and creativity ofthe people in our region, and champion the city as aglobally renowned hub ofoutstanding digital culture.

Looking back and to the future of Brighton Digital Festival

Lose control with Chantelsnew pantheon of rock riffs

Mad scientists of pop bringparody show to the Dome

Brightons rock fans, livemusic lovers and aspiringmusicians can lookforward to a performanceby Chantel McGregor thismonth. The guitarist and

singer-songwriter is set toperform with her band atKomedia, Gardner Street,on Thursday, October 29,as part of her Lose ControlTour. After four years of

touring and plenty offestival appearances,Chantel returns with tennew tracks. These aimto salute contemporaryrock while showing thesongwriters transitionfrom conventional blues toa bolder rock sound withprogressive influences.Together the songs form

Chantels latest album,Lose Control, which isreleased on Friday, October9.LoseControl sees Chantel

channelling her guitarplaying and songwritinginto an exciting pantheonof rock crescendos andriffs that aim to leave herdevout blues rock fan basein awe. The album shouldalso take fans on a sonicjourney, moving into newmusical territory, whileexploring Chantels currentobsession with all thingsSouthern Gothic.Chantel said: My

interpretation of SouthernGothic is the loss ofcontrol, either spiritually, physically (through otherpeople or substances), oremotionally.I drew on this theme a

lot throughout the album, hence the title Lose Control.I wanted the sound andemotion of the album toreflect the concept, so Ijuxtaposed heavy, guitarriff-based, dark tracks withhaunting, emotive acoustictracks, while tying themtogether with the lyricalthemes of desperationand loss so often seen inSouthern Gothic fiction. The album was recorded,

mixed and mastered atLivingstone Browns studioin Brixton over six months.Livingstone Brown,

(Ed Sheeran, Bryan Ferry,Robin Tro er), pla ed the

majority of the bass onthe album, with Chantelplaying small parts, andher touring drummer KeithMcPartling, playing drumsfor the whole album.Chantel said: I did the

vocals, backing vocals, allguitar parts, arrangementsand some production. Webrought in two amazingstring players - CharlieBrown on the violin andChris Worsey on thecello. I really enjoyed thecreativity the studio gaveme and loved venturinginto the production andarrangement sides of it,which I will definitelybe doing more of in thefuture.

Spectacular Elvis tribute celebrates Kings career

Dramatic dance piecewill exploreyoungmans dreams andmemories

One Night of Elvis starringLee Memphis King atBrightons Theatre Royalon Sunday, October 18, willoffer proof positive of Leesgreat belief.Elvis just had it all!Its fast approaching 40

years since Elvis death. But a great song is a

great song no matter howlong ago, and he just sanggreat songs, Lee says. Hewas the greatest star. Hehad everything in spades. He had a great voice, andhe looked great. He hadgreat stage presence. Hewas a real star.Any song he liked he

recorded. I would saythere was no formula, butmaybe the formula was justliking what he sang. He didrock n roll and R&B andgospel and country, a greatmixture.Lee was ten when Elvis

died. He remembers theday well, his mum callingup with the sad news. Leewas already a fan.I was always trying to

    imitate his voice from the

age of about five. I havealways been able to imitatepeople for as long as I canremember. I always wantedto imitate his voice, andI always wanted to go onstage. Id been trying to dothat forever. But the question was

how to achieve that dream a question answered with

the advent of the internet.I didnt have a clue

about how to get intoshow business. Thereare no manuals. Nobodyis going to tell you how,and nobody is going tolet you in. But once theinternet came along andpeople started developingwebsites, then I was ableto send off recordings topromoters and to start tomake progress. Before that,it was just how the hell doyou let people know whatyou want to do? I just hadno idea. All I had was thisfeeling I had to be on stage.I sent off recordings and

somebody was ill and theopportunity came up. I wasasked if I would go andsing at someones birthdayparty in Germany. That wasmy first-ever performance.Somebodys sister hadwanted an Elvis tributefor her brothers birthdayparty. It was scary. It wasas scary as you would

imagine and then ten timesthat, and then after thatI entered a contest, backwhen I used to think thatcontests were credible anduseful. That was in about2005. It was at the time thelargest contest in the worldfor Elvis tributes. I wonit, and after that I startedperforming regularly. He has been touring ever

    since.Lee hasnt much time

for the tributes andimpersonators that turnup for Elvis conteststhese days: They are likecaricatures of what theythink Elvis should be like.

He did a contest muchmore recently, and it wasan awful experience: Itwas just stereotypicalElvis impersonators, fatdads with dyed black hair.Thats not the way to do

it: You have just got to lookat the man, look at the filmof him performing.Lee reckons Elvis was at

his peak from 68 to 72, thecomeback after nine yearsof awful films.Elvis hated the films,

and I cant watch themeither. But he came back at

his best, Lee believes:He looked great. He wassinging great. His decline was only

in the last 18 months ofhis life, the result of amix of ailments and theprescription drugs he wastaking for them: It wasthat combination that gothim in the end, I think. But, as Lee says, there

was a TV programme thatexamined his genes anddetermined that with hisdodgy ticker, he was alwayslikely to die sometimearound then anyway

    Visit www.leememphisking.com to find out more.The show starts at 7.30pm.Tickets cost 20.50 to24.90.Call 0844 871 7650 orvisit www.atgtickets.com/brighton.
