been ravaged by no extra-terrestrialaliens but by human beings whowere born on this earth, are sustainedby this earth and after the soul leavesthe body, their body is cremated andashes sprinkled in fields. Dust to dustand ashes to ashes, that is what thepriest says in performing the lastrites. Thus a human being is whollydependent on planet earth from thebeginning to the end, both in life anddeath. The Earth is generous tohumans; shouldnt the humans begenerous to the earth and not disturbits basic structure and ecology. It is feared that good valuesof life may fade into oblivion. Thusthe young of today cares little for itsbiological mother, what to say ofecological mother, Earth. Indeed achange in attitude is called for.Mother Earth is now undergoing a

painful period of her life of millionsof years. In this context it would berelevant to quote the Shanti mantrawhich is a perfect example of humanbeings deriving Peace from manyelements of Nature and praying toParmatma, the Almighty, for imbib-

ing the same Peace that prevails inNature. It is indeed a perfect fusionof Mankind and Nature in its perfectpeace. The mantra runs thus: AUM dyauh

Vanas-pataayah shan-tirvishve devah shantirbrahma shan-tih sarvam shantih shantireva shantihsa ma shantiredhi.The celestial bodies in the firmamentexist in harmony; harmony perme-ates space, earth, waters, herbs andfoliage, bounties of Nature, divineknowledge, one and all around: har-mony and harmony: O God may thatharmony (Peace) be a part of my per-sonality.

This Veda mantra leads the way,man has to follow. Man has to trainhis mind and harmonise it withNature. MADRID, Aug 5 (IANS) Astrawberry extract developedby Italian and Spanishresearchers seems to protectthe skin against harmful ultra-violet (UV) radiation andreduce damage to DNA."We have verified the protect-

ing effect of strawberryextract against damage toskins cells caused by UVArays," said Maurizio Battino,researcher at the UniversitaPolitecnica delle Marche inItaly, who led the jointSpanish and Italian study.UVA and UVB are two types

of ultraviolet radiation emittedby the sun, which penetratethe earth's atmosphere. Theycause premature aging orwrinkling of the skin. Otherdamaging effects arecataracts, weakening of theimmune system, and skin can-cer, the Journal of AgriculturalFood Chemistry reported.

The team prepared humanskin cell cultures (fibroblasts)and added strawberry extractin different concentrations.Using ultraviolet light, thesamples were then exposed toa dose "equivalent to 90 min-utes of midday summer sun inthe French Riviera," accordingto a statement of FECYT,Spanish Foundation forScience and Technology.Data confirm that the straw-

berry extract, especially at aconcentration of 0.5 mg permillitre, displays photoprotec-tive properties in those fibrob-lasts exposed to UVA radia-tion, it increases cell survivaland viability and decreasesdamage in the DNA whencompared with control cells.

"These aspects are of greatimportance as they provideprotection for cell lines sub-ject to conditions that can pro-voke cancer and other skin-related inflammatory anddegenerative illnesses," out-lines Battino.

But what molecules givestrawberries their photopro-tective properties? Scientistssuspect that it could be theanthocyanins, which are pig-ments that give leaves, flow-ers and fruits their red colour.Analyses have confirmed thatextracts are rich in such sub-stances.
