An important part of our work is the attention to detail. We are constantly searching for images that keep us focussed on the essence of our profession. In this book, you will find a number of these ‘attention-grabbing’ images.
With this book, we want to convey the character of our projects and the inspiration and enthusiasm with which we carry out these architectural assignments. We are convinced that these are important prerequisites for being able to produce inspiring architecture.
We hope that this book will have the same effect on you.

profiel

The basic design principle was: - an architect’s workshop and home with low energy consumption and as little maintenance as possible. The situation of the premises, which was opposite a park and next to a white cubic-shaped school and gymnasium, determined the initial concept. Furthermore there was a lot of attention devoted to the lighting and the appearance. The three-story building consists of 5 separate components. Two solid cubes accommodate the sleeping area, a study and a workshop. Situated between these is a long glass hall housing the kitchen/dining area. This hall is fitted with special a glazing system which prevents overheating. The use of electrically operated roof vents provides ventilation during extremely hot weather. The hall provides access to a pavilion-type living room, which has two glass sides facing south and east. The fifth element is the architect’s drawing room. To take advantage of the light conditions, this is situated on the north side of the building, in the basement. The section protruding from the cube is fitted with a grass roof.A patio has been laid on both sides of the drawing room to enhance light quality, to open up the space, and to improve the view. Through making optimal use of the warmth from the sun, and due to the positioning of spaces and openings in the glass, and the high insulation properties of the external shell, the energy consumption of the premises is extremely low.

61 energie-neutrale woningenUlft
61 energy-neutral propertiesUlft
In Ulft, 61 sustainable, energy-neutral properties will be developed, of which 35 are for social housing. This is truly a unique project in The Netherlands.
On average, these properties will generate just as much energy as they consume. This will be possible because the outside shell of the building will have excellent insulation properties, the buildings will be as compact as possible, and considerable attention will be paid to the position of the buildings in relation to the sun.In addition, the warmth and cold generated in the building will be stored, ensuring that the energy loss is minimal. Furthermore the roofs will be fitted with solar panels. The plans also include the use of environmentally-friendly construction panels. This so called ‘vertical green’ ensures that fine dust particles are also filtered out, so further reducing CO2 emissions. In this way the buildings will provide both environmental benefits and low energy costs for the future residents. A timeless architecture has been chosen, as well as the use of resilient, durable materials. The maintenance of the building is also extremely minimal. In this urban architectural design, a lot of careful consideration has been given to the quality of life, diversity and social cohesion of the community. This plan falls under the framework of a design ‘fast tracking’ system, which tries to ensure that the design is developed within 6 weeks – from the start of the design process to the submittal of the planning application.

‘The Three Lilies’ cultural centre consists of a library, a music centre, a multifunctional hall or theatre, an education area, a foyer, an exhibition area and office space all under one roof. The building has a transparent appearance which is achieved by the use of plenty of glass. The absence of enclosed corridors has created a strong interaction between all these diverse components. Every component was deliberately allowed to use its own building materials to underline the identity of the individual function. The main outer glass building surrounding it ensures that the cultural centre maintains the appearance of unity. The lift shaft with its copper roofing provides a recognisable landmark from the nearby shopping centre.

kloosterNeede
monasteryNeede
In Neede a monastery and convent complex has been built, housing both the Nuns of ‘Julie Postel’ and also the ‘Order of the Maristen’ monks. Inside the symmetrical exterior, the specific requirements and wishes of both orders have been resolved in an intelligent manner.Influenced by their historic background the layout of the monks’ section is more modest and enclosed. In contrast, the section for the Nuns is perfectly in keeping with their vision and trademark itself, i.e. much more open and providing greater visibility.

We consider it important for a building to be designed to maintain its beauty into the future, wherever possible. Not only is the choice of materials of great importance in this, but also are the design details. If a building really needs to be durable, then a lot of attention needs to be invested in this. This seems obvious enough, but this aspect specifically determines whether or not standard solutions can be chosen - one of the big challenges for the architect.
This shop with living quarters, forms part of a large revitalisation of a shopping centre. It sets itself apart from the surrounding traditional brick architecture in its appearance and material usage. Nevertheless the premises is harmonised due to the choice of sleek architecture, subdued detail, and natural materials: – patinated zinc, red cedar wood and painted brick work.

Adjoining the cultural centre in Warnsveld is an apartment complex with a supermarket and a few smaller shops on the ground floor. The location forms the division between the old town and the new area of Warnsveld. The tower is unusual for Warnsveld, which is renowned for its low buildings. The tower marks the entrance to the new shopping centre. Because of the quality of the surrounding landscape, the apartments have plenty of view of the outside scenery. Situated underneath the complex is a car park.

A new cultural centre has been built on the site of a former supermarket in the area. The location marks the division between the old and new districts of Warnsveld. Previously the rear aspect of the shopping centre faced on to the housing area. This ‘rear-view’ created an uninviting image for the surrounding area. In the new development, the cultural centre will be situated with the entrance and the more open, appealing aspect of the building facing the housing area, thus creating a new view for the neighbourhood and an attractive entrance for the shopping centre.

ketelhuisBoxmeer
boiler houseBoxmeer
Quoted from the judges’ report:
This explicitly modeled boiler house contains elements which reflect its surroundings. The slope of the sides corresponds to the embankments of the dykes in the nearby river area, and the metal pyramid-shaped roof corresponds, in turn, to the church spire in the same area. There is also an agricultural reference possible with the comparison to a haystack. These elements are all integrated in a way which immediately gives a stylish quality to something as trivial as a boiler house, and provides a positive contribution to the suburban surroundings.
The boiler house also provides storage space for old paper and rubbish. This small building reflects the four elements (earth, water, fire and air), as well as the different scenic elements in the surrounding area. Additionally, it provides a new vista on the surrounding landscape.

92 woningen met zorgcomponent Enschede
92 homes with a care componentEnschede
The development area is part of larger urban expansion from the nineteen-sixties. The basic principle behind the concept back then was to provide a lot of light, space and greenery. These qualities are still present in the current design, even though many green areas have had to make way for parking spaces.
One under considered point at that time was the social contact and the control aspect. We have given this plenty of attention in our plan and it forms the basis for both the architectural design, as well as the principle for accessibility of the homes.
The homes will all be unsecured from the inside which obviously leads to the residents themselves having greater contact with each other. Because of which, social control is also greater. Because there are no rear walls (i.e. a gallery style), a powerful orientation is absent. This last point is an important basic architectural principle. The buildings are located around the outside of a green park.
The plan consists of three buildings:
A 32 residential care apartments for people with a mental disability
B A health centre with 32 apartments above itC A residential community of 24 units for
Suriname Hindus.

Located in the centre of Neede, in close proximity to a historical church, this town hall and auditorium has been created. The compact location, the sensitivity of the site and the question of a powerful identify has lead to this explicitly modelled entrance.
The curved front facade embraces a small meeting area, and leads the visitors inside. The route inside has specifically been made the ‘centre of attention’ because of the different activities that can simultaneously take place here.

The ‘Stadsveld’ district of Enschede is undergoing redevelopment. Each individual new development plan must be ‘a jewel in the crown’ of the area in order to stimulate further future developments. One of these ‘jewels’ is a solitary building housing apartments.
This will be delivered using an intentionally eye-catching design and choice of materials. The window panels are indented and the contrast in use of materials gives a certain dynamic to the building.
With the design, careful attention has been paid to the situation within the surrounding area: the open facade has been deliberately positioned to overlook a bustling square and city woodland.

multifunctional centre (umbrella)Sri Lanka
(initiatief MVO projecten Doetinchem.
After the devastating tsunami of 2004 the need arose to be able to quickly produce simple shelters. This multifunctional centre is specifically intended for looking after, feeding and schooling orphans.
The design is in keeping with the local architectural tradition whereby the building can be made by the local inhabitants themselves with limited resources. At the same time, the previously existing identity is reintroduced.

On a previous industrial site in Zwolle, 115 homes and apartments have been developed. The nearby grain mill ‘De Aloe’ has determined the layout of the lines of vision in the area.
The individual rows of houses have a strong mutual cohesion which has been achieved through the use of common building materials, property boundaries, ‘green’ garden fences and by incorporating similar details.
In this way, height and appearance can vary, but the cohesion of the neighbourhood remains in place.

The width of the building plot and the customer’s requirement for privacy have determined the shape of this house. The street-facing side of the building, which lies on the northern side of the plot, is relatively enclosed. The rear side, which lies to the south, is much more transparent. In this way, the exterior (the garden) forms a strong connection with the interior (the house). Simplicity and clarity have lead to a fresh and contemporary home.

The client’s requirements were lots of light, space, transparency and privacy.Long lines of vision have been created inside the house, which cause constant changes in perspective, as you move through it.
A spacious interior has been created by the inclusion of large glass panels. Externally, these glass surfaces counterbalance the enclosed, cubic shape of the property.
Internally the glass facades provide an interaction with the natural environment - they function as true living paintings of the surroundings. At the same time the etched glass panels are functional, filtering the sunlight. These glass panels are used economically so that, on the one hand, sufficient light is provided, but on the other hand, the required privacy is guaranteed.
Through simplification of design a bright, spacious and calm architecture has been created.

In the vicinity of the ‘Graafschap’ football stadium in Doetinchem, a new neighbourhood will be developed. Open fields will be transformed into a wooded area, throughout which houses will be scattered. In addition to a large number of pre-designed, project built housing, there will also be space for individual and privately built homes.
This house has a rectangular base area that emphasises its position in relation to the sun. Large north-east facing roof terraces have been created, which have views of the surrounding woodland.
On the south west side (the street facing side), a pronounced front facade has been designed which detaches itself from the rest of the building. In keeping with the garden, there is a walled patio area, which also faces the sun. On the other side of the house, adjacent to the public area, a glass show-case exhibits the client’s hand made art.
The wall openings are specifically intended to modify the amount of sunlight and provide a greater spaciousness, in conjunction with the varying internal heights and voids. The home is especially well insulated and extensive use will be made of heat recycling.

With its artistry, the rain museum wants people to stand and reflect the phenomenon of rain, and to underline the importance of co-existing with water.
The building is universally round, thereby having the maximum connection with its surroundings. At the same time internally it provides a large area for shelter and for concentration. One axis in the form of a path slices through the museum and leads up to a lookout point above the wadi. Here, an explanation of the Rain Museum is written on a glass panel. The path forms an intrinsic part of the building. The roof is in the shape of half a water chute and it functions as a collecting container. From there, the water flows through a thin pipe, and continues to drip into a water tank below, long after it has rained.
The water tank has been made into a bench, from where people can sit and view the artwork. The dripping sound reverberates around the circular walls, which further emphasises the function of the museum. The overflowing water from the water tank/bench then sinks into the ground.
