FIVE QUESTIONS!
This month we get to know the Buck Creek Ladies Missionary Society a
little better…
BUCK CREEK LADIES MISSIONARY SOCIETY
1. Tell us about the Buck Creek Ladies Missionary Society “LMS”.
LMS is one of
the oldest
organizations
associated with
Buck Creek
UMC, either
side of a
century. We
meet 4 times a
year: February,
May,
September and
November, for
supper,
business,
devotions and
an activity.
Our business meetings consist of finding ideas for missions in the church,
community, state, country or the world. We are always on the lookout!
2. What are some of your missions?
Each year we and the BCUMC congregation collect/donate socks for the
residents of the Lebanon Children's home. That is our biggest mission, but we
have had other missions over the years. One that has continued for decades is
collecting used stamps for the Marion Mission Warehouse. They sell the
stamps and use the money to pay the cost of shipping needed clothing, shoes,
etc. to Africa. We sign and send out greeting cards (birthday, cheer,
sympathy, etc.). It's our way of connecting with the church and community.
Occasionally a need comes up such as a youth organization that needed a
basketball goal, which we provided funds for. We have contributed to the
backpack program at an elementary school. We sponsor the collecting of
gloves and hats in January at BCUMC and find homes for them, such as a
school or shelter. Recently we donated to the chapel carpet fund at Lebanon
Children's Home.
10
3. How did the socks collecting for the Lebanon Children's Home come
about?
LMS used to use a long Christmas gift wish list provided by the Lebanon
Children's Home. Over the years, donations from BCUMC suggested by that
list dwindled. In 2001, an LMS member suggested we choose one item from
that list to concentrate on. Socks was selected, something everyone could
donate. The rest is history, with our largest donation being 857 pairs in 2015,
in memory of member Marie Pless. BCUMC should be proud that in 16 years,
the total socks donated is 8,389 pairs!
4. Who can be a member?
Any lady who wants to join! We welcome new members!
5. What is something not many people know about LMS?
That we were known at one time as the Young Ladies (Women's) Missionary
Society. About a decade ago the "young" was officially dropped from the
name. (We are all young at heart!)
SAFETY MATTERS!
On May 15th, the Ladies Missionary Society hosted Shana Wainscott, a
Safety Officer with the Lafayette Police Department. The ladies were asked
“What is something you don’t feel safe about?”
On home security, Shana asked who has mini blinds, who has drapes or
curtains? Did you know it’s actually easy to see through mini blinds? You
can have those, but it’s also better to add drapes to your window attire. Keep
your windows closed, locked, and drapes shut when you’re not at home, and at
night. Don’t sleep with your windows open. Second floor is safer for open
11
windows. Motion lights outside are a good
deterrent to burglars or peeping toms. Keep
your cars locked, even if you live in the
country. Keep everything secured. If you
have bushes by your windows, keep them
trimmed. “Sticky” bushes are good to have,
to give a good ouchy to a window peeper.
Shana asked where we keep our spare keys.
DO NOT keep them under the door mat,
above the door, or under a rock! It’s best to
leave a spare key with a neighbor.
Make sure your young children know
their name, parent’s names, address and
phone number. You would be surprised at
how many, even up to 7 or 8 years old that
don’t know their parents’ names!
Safety when you’re away from home:
“Always have your cell phone, even a
deactivated one can dial 9-1-1. 90% of
safety is just being alert.” When you go to
a store, park as close as you can to the
building. The farther away you are, the
worse a surveillance camera image is. Be
alert in the parking lot, a cross purse is
good to have. They are making them with
wire in the handle now to keep them from
being cut off and swiped. Men should carry
their wallets in their front pocket. It’s also better to carry copies of important
papers like insurance cards, birth certificates, etc. Leave the originals in the
safe at home. When it comes to purses and wallets, don’t carry a lot of cash
with you. Thieves are counting on older people carrying cash instead of debit
or credit cards. Never leave your purse unattended in a shopping cart, and
keep your purse closed!
Keep in mind what you’re leaving visible in your car, and make sure it’s
locked. Many thefts occur because people leave in plain sight: credit cards,
purses, money, and other valuables. And leaving your car unlocked as well is
just asking for trouble. There are thieves who come off of the interstate and
ransack cars in parking lots. Unlocked cars are easy targets.
If you are in an awkward position with somebody (a Scary Larry) following
you, get on the cell with somebody, tell them where you are, where you are
going and when you should arrive there. Do something to draw attention to
yourself, like talk very loudly, to scare the Scary Larry away. If you need
someone to walk you safely to your vehicle, call the police department and
they will assist you. 9-1-1 will stay on the line with you.

Shana left us with these words: “Be aware of what’s going on around
you!” Thanks to hostess Mary Ann Pattee for her diligence in acquiring the
speaker, and for all the work she did crafting the evening’s table décor. The
laminated safety placemat is a treasure to keep! Thank you to hostess Jan
Prosser for good food and drink!
VBS IS ALMOST HERE! JUNE 19-23 “Paul & the Under-
ground Church” is the
theme. Visit a crowded
Roman marketplace, meet
with the Apostle Paul,
tiptoe past Roman guards
to meet first century
Christians hiding in a
cave… Kids learn God’s
love is a gift, it changes
us, is always with us,
saves us, and is worth
sharing.
Please pray about how
YOU can help our VBS
program this year. We
need prayers, supplies &
people to work directly
with the kids. If you have questions or want to volunteer to help, please
contact Pam Smith. (See registration forms on the next two pages.)
Pam Smith & Michele Roach ready for VBS!

TIME CAPSULE
We were recently presented with the Sunday School pins that belonged to
the late Richard “Dick” Temple, by his grandson Gabe Temple, a middle
schooler. These pins will soon be on display at church in a special shadow
box. Here is the story of the pins in Dick’s own words:
“When you used to attend church, for perfect attendance you started with a
bible after 13 weeks, then when you hit 26 weeks you got your name in gold on
your bible. For 1 year you got a pin, then a wreath and bars. I have 7 bars
here. If Dad said we were going some place on Sunday---you had to go to
Sunday School where you went OR have an excuse why you missed!”
Dick was the son of Robert H. and Hazel Temple. He joined the church on
April 14, 1957, and was a member until his passing in 2010 at the age of 72 ½.

YOUR THOUGHTS NEEDED! There has been some talk and communication about deciding on an annual
fund raiser for our church, for missions to be used as needed. I am open to
suggestions. So far these are the contenders: A breakfast, menu and time of
year to be decided; a rummage sale; a silent auction; a dinner, probably in
the fall and menu to be decided. Depending on the choice or top two choices,
we could possibly do two fund raisers. In any case patience will be a virtue!
It takes time and effort to "iron out the wrinkles". And of course all choices
will take volunteers! This being said, we will need to be committed to our
choice and/or choices. Wanting to be fair to all of you with suggestions,
writing down your thoughts will be the best way for us to make a decision.
This will also include thoughts of not doing an annual fund raiser. Please
write to me in the next couple of weeks so plans can be made. Text to: 765-
491-9294; email to: [email protected]; or write me a note. Your insight
will be appreciated! -Jan Prosser
