OneSundaymorning theminister asked theorganist to play something appropriate assoon as he had appealed to his congrega-tion for yet more money for repairs to thechurch. After his sermon, the minister tookthe plunge and said, "Brothers and Sisters, weare ingreatdifficulty; theroof repairsare tocost twiceasmuchaswehadexpected.Weneed £4,000 more. Any of you who canpledge£100 today, pleasestandup." At thatmoment, the organ burst into the NationalAnthemandeveryoneimmediatelystoodup!Sadly, many people think that the Kirk is“ayewyes wintin mair siller.” Of course, wecouldn’t survive without money to pay theupkeepofourchurchbuildingandthewagesof our ministers/priests/pastors. But thechurch is about somuchmore thanmoney. It isabout the loveandcareofJesusChrist forthe people shown through the words andacts of his followers.Last year our church set up a Pastoral Teamof visitors to helpmewhilemy husband hasbeenoff long termrecuperating fromcancer. At first, the volunteers were anxious andfearful about how theywouldbe receivedbythose they visited, or if they would find theright words to say. Having sent themout onseveral visits over the last year, the visitors

have always come back buzzing with whatthey themselvesgotoutof thevisit, andthosevisited have always been very grateful andappreciative of the visit.Of course there will always be some whoridicule theworkof thechurch, perhapsnonemore asnow, when for example thenationalChurchofScotland isproposingtoreduce itsministers by one sixth (i.e. the proposal is for200 ministers less, 4 in the Presbytery ofMoray). Theother sideof thecoin is down tomoney, so if you want to complain that yourparish won’t have aminister, then just think -does your congregationwillingly and sacrifi-cially give to cover the costs of thatministry? If not, then you will only have yourselves toblame. If all this soundsdepressing, then letus not forget that whatever happens, thechurchbelongstoGod. Outof ruins,HebuiltaTempleandacity. Outofdeath,Hebroughtresurrection.Letusbrieflyconsider theBookofNehemiah. In reconstructing the ruins of Jerusalem andits Temple Nehemiah and and his buildersmet opposition from their enemies: opposi-tion by ridicule which Nehemiah and hisbuilders answered by prayer and work; andopposition by threat of armed interventionwhichNehemiahand thebuilders answered

by precautionary measures for battle, whereby they kept alert and ready for actionbyday andbynight. There was also opposition from inside theranks by a spirit of doubt and defeatism.Defeatismseemstobepartofhumannature.As the eternal pessimist Homer Simpsonsaid, “Trying is the first step towards failure.”TheBookofNehemiahclearlydemonstratesthat trying is the firststeptowardssucceedingwhen we have God as our architect andbuilder.BychaptereightofNehemiah, theoppositionto the building work has disappeared. Thepeople have entered a time of peace andunity because of their faith and hard work.Above all, the fact that they were “gatheredas oneman” indicates that they were unitedin purpose. The assembly of the worship-pers was characterized by unity, zeal, atten-tiveness, preparation, reverence, prayerfulandactiveparticipation,ANDinvolvementbyworking together, and togethermakingadif-ference, a life-changing difference. This is amessagenotonly for theChurchofScotlandcongregations, but for all of us.

We know that a com-promise can be found

protection while also securing our jobs.

Moray Council could either change the de-sign of the scheme or commit to relocat-ing M&C’s Garden Centre.

Both the High Street shop and Garden Centre operate as one business and their combined loss to the town would be huge.

We bring £1million to the local economy every year and sup-port numer-ous local suppliers - some of whom fear they would close if we do. Town centre vitality would diminish; visitor numbers to the area would decrease; and Forres would lose an institution which has been in the town for nearly 130 years.

Under the current plan, the Garden Centre would be in the mid-dle of a major civil engineering project for up to two years and

-dict a third of business would go.

Land would be per-manently lost to the

works and the seclud-ed plant selling area would be swamped by an elevated A96.

As staff, we unani-

to save M&C as it is a great place to work and a valuable asset to the town.

Please feel free to speak to any of us for more details or support our drive by signing our petition - either in-store or online.

Thank you.

Tarte Tatin

Tradition says that the Tarte Tatin was first createdby accident at the Hotel Tatin in Lamotte-Beuvron,France in 1898. The hotel was run by two sisters,Stéphanie and Caroline Tatin. There are conflictingstories concerning the tart's origin, but the predominantone is that Stéphanie Tatin, who did most of thecooking, was overworked one day. She started to makea traditional apple pie but left the apples cooking inbutter and sugar for too long. Smelling the burning, shetried to rescue the dish by putting the pastry base ontop of the pan of apples, quickly finishing the cookingby putting the whole pan in the oven. After turning outthe upside down tart, she was surprised to find howmuch the hotel guests appreciated the dessert.

IInnggrreeddiieennttss150g/5oz unsalted butter1 fresh vanilla pod200g/7oz caster sugar8 apples300g/10½oz puff pastry1 medium egg, yolk only, plus 5ml double cream - to make egg wash150ml/5fl oz crème fraîche to serve

FFoorr tthhee bbuutttteerrssccoottcchh ssaauuccee150g/5oz caster sugar150g/5oz unsalted butter150g/5oz golden syrup70g/3oz whipping cream

Cut the unsalted butter into thin slices and mouldthe butter slices (using well washed hands) into a non-stick frying pan with high sides.

Split the vanilla pod and mix the vanilla seeds byhand with the sugar. Tip the vanilla sugar onto thebutter and shake the pan until the sugar is evenlydispersed.

Peel and core the apples and cut in half through thecore. Pick out any pips. Arrange the apples skin sidedown. Pack the apples in as tightly as possible.

Cook on a baking sheet on top of the stove untilthe apples have started to caramelise. You may need tochange this tray a few times during the cooking processbut it saves the oven top. Always take great care whendealing with hot liquids and under no circumstancesleave it alone.

Roll out the puff pastry evenly to about 2mm thickon a floured surface and prick with a fork. Place on topof the apples and cut the excess pastry away. Egg washand then bake in the oven at 200C/400F/Gas 6 until thepastry is golden brown, about 15 minutes.

Meanwhile make the butterscotch sauce. Place thesugar, butter and golden syrup in a stainless steel panand boil until the sauce is a dark caramel colour. Addthe whipping cream to the hot caramel and stir untilmixed thoroughly.

Press the tart with a plate that fits the inside of thepan and drain any excess liquid. Leave to rest for 20minutes. Then turn the tarte tatin out onto a plate andserve immediately. Pour the caramel sauce around andoffer the crème fraîche separately.

At the Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society (WDCS) weare only too aware of how much whales and dolphins havealways fascinated us humans and that seeing these amazinganimals in their natural environment is often a memorable ex-perience. People tell us just that every day! If you choose the right site and invest a little patience, thenyou could glimpse one or more of the 24 species of whales, dolphins and porpoises recorded around the Scottish coast. If you do fancy getting out by yourself, with the family or thedog to see some of these creatures, then the Moray Firth is afantastic area to see whales, dolphins and porpoises fromland. The resident population of bottlenose dolphins tendsto spend a lot of time close to the coast and can be veryactive, making them easy to spot. Porpoises are smaller andtend to be quite shy but with a bit of practice, they can also beseen around the coast. Even minke whales make regular

visits to some of the deeper coastal waters like Cullen Bay. Before you get out and about, there are some considerationsthat you will need to take onboard- a good set of binocularsfor a start! In the Moray Firth area, the bottlenose dolphinsand minke whales tend (not always though) to be seen moreregularly in the summer months - watching in good weather(and earlier in the day) will increase your chances of sightinga whale or dolphin. On a windy day, waves and sea spraymay obscure a dorsal fin breaking the surface. As for good viewing spots, there are countless great placesfrom which you can watch for whales and dolphins in theMoray Firth. Top sites include; Cromarty Sutors, ChanonryPoint, WDCS Dolphin and Seal Centre at North Kessock, FortGeorge, WDCS Wildlife Centre at Spey Bay, Cullen Bay,Broughty Ferry Castle, and Aberdeen Harbour. If you want to watch for whales and dolphins in comfort andwith easy access to food and facilities, then the WDCS centreat North Kessock is ideal. From the Cullen Bay Hotel too, youcan even look for minke whales through the dining roomwindows while you eat! Other sites such as Lossiemouth,

Nairn and Spey Bay offer easy access to cafés and toilets.Fancy being guided by the experts? Then WDCS can helphere too. Some of the best encounters with whales anddolphins are when out walking the cliffs and beaches, and ifit is an all round encounter with nature that you are interestedin then you could sign up to WDCS' PoD Plod, a brand newchallenge event taking place in August, and created to helpraise funds to protect the dolphins of the Moray Firth. Theevent is a 26-mile sponsored walk along the breathtakingMoray Coastal Trail from Findhorn Bay to Spey Bay….. thechallenge is to do it in 2 days!Guided by Sarah Dolman, WDCS’s head of policy forScotland, and Alice Pope, WDCS’s Scottish ConservationOfficer, you will also be taken on a dolphin and wildlife boatcruise, look out for dolphins from viewing spots along theroute, enjoy a reception and guided tour of the WDCS WildlifeCentre at Spey Bay and finish with a dolphin watching trip toChanonry Point with resident dolphin expert, Charlie Phillips. No matter where or how you choose to go watching, anotebook and ID guide are useful to take with you. These willhelp you to make notes about what you are seeing and lookup the details if you are not sure. If you spot something thatpuzzles you then WDCS now has a comprehensive speciesguide that can be accessed on-line through wdcs.org. Makegood notes and take pictures, then check them on-line whenyou get home.If you get hooked, then you could become a regular WDCSshore watcher. Contact our volunteer manager and we’ll getyou trained up and watching the sea! It’s a vital part of whatWDCS does as we use our shore watch data and otherresearch to try to understand dolphin movements all yearround and better manage potential impacts to them and theirenvironment.

The Moray Carers Project

Helping people to help others

The MorayCarers Project in Elginhas recently beenawarded funding fromthe Long Term Conditions AllianceScotland to create ourinnovative new DigitalStory Project. DigitalStories are short doc-umentary films aboutunpaid Carers that willaid communicationand awareness incommunities byshowing the vital roleCarers play in society.

The Digital Story Maker will work with Carers to make creativefilms about their experiences, concerns and contributions tosociety. We are hoping this project will create a new linkbetween Carers and the community.

The finished films will be used in a number of ways andthe Carers involved will have full control over who gets to seetheir film. Some will want to keep theirs for personal reflec-tion; some will take part solely for the therapeutic benefits ofbeing involved with the process; others will be happy for theirfilm to be seen by others. These latter films will form the basisfor a library service at the Moray Carers Project, as well asbeing used in screenings in various Moray communities, toraise awareness. We will also be posting some of the films onour website: www.moraycarers.co.uk/digitalstories.htm .

The Digital Story Project is the newest edition to theservices provided by the Moray Carers Project. We work withCarers of all ages throughout Moray to ensure they are recog-nised, valued and supported to manage the impact of caringon their lives. The Moray Carers Project describes a Carer as‘someone who, without payment, provides help and supportto a partner, child, relative, friend or neighbour, who could notmanage without their help. This could be due to age, physicalor mental illness, addiction or disability.’

An important part of ourwork is the ‘Will You Care’ initia-tive. This initiative is funded bythe Big Lottery and aims to raisethe profile of unpaid Carers inMoray and contribute to therange of services available tothem. We deliver specialisttraining for Carers and focus onlong-term conditions, e.g.stroke, diabetes, heart disease,

dementia, and manyother conditions. Wealso work with GPpractices andhospitals in Moray toensure that Carers, aswell as patients, arebeing identified effec-tively and supportedappropriately. Weliaise closely with NHSprofessionals whocontribute their different areas of expertise to the courses wedeliver. One of our key aims is to reach out to the many‘hidden Carers’ in Moray and assist them in accessing thehelp and support they may need to manage their role. Toachieve this, we work with pharmacies throughout Moray. When a Carer makes contact we provide an initial listeningear, explain more about our services and then ‘signpost’people in the right direction for any additional support. TheMoray Carers Project also offers a free, confidential coun-selling service.

We offer services for Carers of all ages, including YoungCarers. Our Education Support Workers work with YoungCarers primarily through primary and secondary schools, butalso in colleges. Some of the services provided by the YoungCarers team are: supporting Young Carers to raise issues withschool, Social work, school nurses and other supportsystems; highlight issues that Young Carers may have withGuidance staff e.g. bullying, homework problems, etc;providing a listening ear to Young Carers, pupils and schoolstaff; raise awareness of Young Carers through delivery ofPSE lessons to year one pupils. As well as all of this weorganise great activities for Young Carers to take part in. So, as an addition to these services, Digital Stories hopes tobring a new dimension to the way in which the Moray CarersProject, and care organisations in general, can provide helpto Carers.

We are now asking Carers to get in contact to discussthe possibilities of making films. We are also keen to hear frommembers of Moray communities to discuss the possibilitiesfor future screenings to help raise awareness.

Moray Carers Project is based at 227 High Street Elgin(IV30 1DJ) and people with caring responsibilities (friends, children, parents neighbours, colleagues) can drop in ormake an appointment by phoning 01343 540990, or [email protected]. Information about our services canalso be accessed via our website at www.moraycarers.co.uk.If you want to get in contact with the Digital Story Project thenphone and ask for Will, or email:[email protected].

Police MattersIt was noted that the Coffee Shop hadbeen broken into over the weekend;enquiries were on-going. JohnRobertson confirmed that he hadadvised PC Russell re troublesome in-dividuals who had moved into theDeskford area.

Local CouncillorsCllr Cree noted continuing concerns rethe financial position of the MorayCouncil, and confirmed that the CullenProperty Review would only happen aspart of a Moray-wide review of councilproperties - likely to happen during thenext financial year. The request from the Cullen, Deskfordand Portknockie Heritage Group foruse of the Memorial Hall over thesummer was to go to the PolicyCommittee on Tuesday 30th March;Cllr Cree indicated that he was likely tospeak in favour of a 2nd proposalwhich the Heritage Group hadsubmitted (including a 3-month trial, with running costs being met). TheCommunity Council indicated supportfor the Heritage Group in its objectives. It was also confirmed by the Secretary(conversation with the Secretary of theHeritage Group) that, should their ap-plication be successful, the HeritageGroup would move out of the MemorialHall for other potential bookings (andthis had always been part of theirproposal).

TreasurerIn the absence of the Treasurer, theSecretary reported that the bankbalance stood at £2,553.97 (including

the sum of £252.51 being kept in trustfor the Neighbourhood Watch).

Young MembersIn the absence of the Young Members, the Secretary undertook to e-mail themto establish how they are progressingwith their action points, including aYoung Talent Evening and a "PublicityCampaign" re membership of aCommunity Council in Buckie High andKeith Grammar. They had also previ-ously indicated their support for the11th Moray Great Bike Ride.

Harbour Committee ReportThe Vice-Chair advised that he had notreceived any feedback from CllrMacDonald re the list of requirementsfor the 3 Harbours and the continuingfailure of the Moray Council to addressthe huge spending deficit on the 3Harbours' upkeep. A further meeting ofthe 3 Harbours Committee wasscheduled. A draft letter to the FirstMinister is being compiled.

Floodlighting of the MarketCross/War MemorialThe Chair plans to attend the Fundrais-ing Seminar in Elgin on 1st April 2010with a view to identifying potentialfunding sources.

PlanningCullen Harbour LighthouseFinalised quotation from supplier: A de-finitive quotation has now beenobtained from Varis Engineering - atotal of £10,575 (£9,000 + VAT) for areplica painted stainless steel structure.Following discussion, it was agreed

that the Vice-Chair should accept thequotation on behalf of the CommunityCouncil, and that all efforts should nowbe made to raise the gap in funding.

A.O.C.B.Lack of roadsweeper in Deskford/Deskford concerns re HGV traffic/Deskford concerns re fast traffic on theB-road: John Robertson raised all 3issues on behalf of the Deskfordcommunity. In addition to a lack ofroadsweeper (and considerable messis created by lorries and agriculturalvehicles), the HGV traffic rumblingthrough the very tight road through thevillage of Kirktown has already causeddamage to a tree, hedge and signpost;there are no signs for HGVs to take analternative route. In addition, theDeskford community feel threatened byfast traffic on the B-road, and areasking if signs or traffic calmingmeasures can be installed; there is alsothe concern of pick-up and drop-off ofschool kids by bus in this stretch; thereis but one post box in the area in Berry-hillock, causing people to walk on theB-road; there has been an increase of"boy racers" and commercial vehiclesrecently; the community propose apedestrian sign Berryhillock -Community Centre - Kirktown.Following discussion, it was agreedthat John Robertson would write toGordon Holland on all 3 matters.

Date, time and place of next meeting29th April 2010 at 7 p.m. in theMemorial Hall, Cullen Town Hall.
