Previously in Palabora Copper the job scam happened whereby people were asked to deposit between R3000 and R10 000.

“We used local media such as Phalaborwa FM and Phalaborwa Herald to sensitise and appeal to the community to report such acts to authorities and it worked for us, currently we have Vexos which includes the three traditional authorities that will start the process of hiring of unskilled labours in July and semi-Skilled in October” said Hulisani Nemaxhwi,Corporate Affairs Manager at Palabora Copper.

“Fourteen people were once transported from Johannesburg in a taxi and paid R5000 each to a fraudster and accommodated at one of the lodges in Phalaborwa until they realized that it was a scam after the person vanished”, says Phalaborwa police spokesperson Elvis Mongwe.

The Roads infrastructure rehabilitation phase one project of Maphutha and Maswikeng Streets renewal is nearing completion in Namakgale.

The project is part of the R39 million contributed by Rio Tinto, the former owners of Palabora Copper after their divestment transaction of Palabora Mining Company.

The project is implemented by Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality through a main contractor Dane Projects and local sub-contractors.

As part of economic empowerment of small business owners, sub- contractors were given an opportunity to assist in

the project. “At the moment we are installing drainage systems while the low level water bridge is near completion” said Philippine Mohale the Community Liaison offi cer.

Seventeen people have been employed by the project since its inception in November 2013. “I have been able to buy a bed for myself and clothes after being employed on this project” said Millicent Mongale, a labour on the project. Maphutha street is being surfaced. Side parking and bus stop paving is busy being erected. Two more phases of the project are expected to be rolled immediately after completion of the fi rst phase.

Phase one nearing completion

Democratic Alliance will administer the writing of a petition of demands for communal water taps to the community of Matikoxikaya.

This comes after the murder of Nomsa Mathebula in Matikoxikaya who was allegedly murdered at 02:00 at night while fetching water at a street tap.

“In the petition we request the Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality to facilitate the delivery of water in Matikoxikaya” said Mike Mathebula the local councilor of DA.

The date of submission of the petition is yet to be confi rmed. “If you are a councilor you are not allowed to submit a petition to the council that you are also a decision maker and if Mathebula writes it he is doing it for himself” said Jonas Mahesu, the Spokesperson of Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality.

The death of Joyce

Mathebula brought the community of Matikoxikaya community together. “Since Friday the municipality has been installing communal pipes to residents to ease the water shortage situation” said Matikoxikaya councilor Samuel Chauke.

The water shortage problem of Matikoxikaya has been continuing for the past fi ve months. “We are facilitating the process of engaging in a meeting between the municipality and Matikoxikaya community,” said Lazzy Mokoena.

The police in the area are at a fi nal stage of appointing street committees.

“To the family of Joyce Mathebula we are saying condolences for their loss of a family member we are doing everything we can to solve the water problem” said Mayor of Mopani District Municipality, Joshua Matlou.

4 PHALABORWA HERALD Friday May 30, 2014PROMOTION

Clinix Phalaborwa Private Hospital in partnership with Lifebuoy held the school handwashing campaigns in Phalaborwa last week.

The aim of the campaign was to promote hand hygiene as a way of preventing illnesses such as colds and fl u which increase learner absenteeism during the winter season.

The two schools selected were Ninakhulu and Lulekani Primary Schools. Representatives of Lifebuoy encouraged the learners to wash their hands fi ve times a day,

especially at key occasions such as before handling food, after a visit to the bathroom and when in the shower or bath.

By adopting daily handwash routines one can cut the incidence of these everyday and often preventable illnesses. Lifebuoy not only educated the learners but also the teachers, to run with the 21 day programme where each learner is expected to keep a diary of their handwashing routine.

“The campaign is big for our community and we hope to build on this relationship with

Lifebuoy and extend it to other schools in our community and surrounding areas” said Virnicia Mathebula, the marketing manager of the hospital.

The schools were left with bath soaps, comic books and posters to motivate the learners

The Supritendent of Phelang Community Centre, She Rasebotsa has retired from her post at the end of April.

Rasebotsa started her career as a student nurse at Elim Hospital in 1976 and qualifi ed as a registered nurse in 1979.

In 1980 worked as a nursing sister at Elim Hospital, she later qualifi ed as a midwife at Philadelphia Hospital later in 1981, she continued her nursing studies with Groothoek Hospital and qualifi ed as Psychiatric Nursing in 1982 and joined Maphutha L Malatji Hospital.

She later graduated with a BA Degree in Nursing at the then University of the North now University of Limpopo where she majored in Nursing Management, Nursing Education and Community Health Nursing Science. In 2001 she was appointed an HIV

coordinator at Palabora Foundation. The programme was initiated by Palabora Mining in partnership with Department of Health, Palabora Foundation, Foskor Limited, Sasol Nitro and Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality. The main aim of the programme was to educate and prevent the spread of HIV infection to the entire Ba-Phalaborwa communities. “It was not easy in the beginning because stigma was still rife in the area and people had very little knowledge about HIV&AIDS” said Rasebotsa. She thanked all politicians for making commitment in the project. As a result this made coordination easy and investment of other stakeholders who came on board.

Michael Mndawe was one of the individual who decided to publicly disclose his HIV status. The massive support from the local Royal Councils Maseke, Makhushane,

Mashishimale, Majeje and Seloane made a huge difference. The two military units in Phalaborwa the 7 Sai and 5 Special Force Regimen came on board. She initiated a support group consisting of people who were infected with HIV. She hosted a forum between Medical Doctors,Health Professionals and Traditional healers to share ideas on how best to help clients. “This was an effort to change the attitude of both professionals and traditional leaders” says Rasebotsa.

Rasebotsa led a team to prepare for the National department of Health to accredit Maphutha L Malatji hospital and Phelang Community Centre to offer patients Anti retroviral treatment. Currently Phelang centre has been monitoring patients, encourage and support them to take treatment.

“I am encouraged by sexual partners who

come for treatment and youths doing HIV tests at Phelang centre” she said.

The HIV treatment is now user friendly because patients take one pill in the evening called Fixed Dose Combination (FDC). The FDC is supplied by government to Phelang centre.Palabora Copper donated R7million for the clinic built opposite Leboneng Library in Namakgale. There is another mobile clinic to be placed at Legae truck stop for truck drivers. Through Palabora Foundation, Old Mutual came on board to help six Drop in Centres with donations of R20 000 each . “Throughout my nursing career I maintained my pledge that my fi rst consideration will always be my patients ” said Rasebotsa. She says now it is time to be with her family. She is a mother of two, a son and a daughter and grandmother of fi ve. S
