“ To compete effectively in
the future, organizations
will depend on their ability
to recruit top talent with the
skills to lead, manage, or-
ganise and deliver change
consistently and cost-
effectively in an unpredict-
able economic environ-
ment.” Dr Paul Gardiner
“Ramadan for me is a time for worship , spiritual upliftment and caring for the needy. It is an oppor-tunity to thank Allah for being able to observe fasting and blessed with being a Muslim .I reflect upon my childhood days of celebrating Ramadan back home in Sudan, with my late father , who used to hold a big Iftar party, we used to break our fast in square just off our home where all relatives and pas-serby could eat of the iftar with us in a rural setting , at times it rained while having or preparing for
iftar” Osman Aburuf, BUiD student
“Ramadan is the month of fasting for all Muslims around the world, it’s a blessed month during which Allah (SWT) has promised to shower his blessings in abundance. For me its’ a month of taking as
much as possible from Allah's unending bounties by ensuring I observe the guidelines of Islam. “

Professional Development Session for Academics : e Assessment and Feedback
Dr Eugenie Samier has published five books with Routledge, the second of which, co-edited with Michele Schmidt of Can-ada, has gone into a paperback edition this spring. “Emotional Dimensions of Educational Administration and Leadership,” through the work of international contributors, explores the emotional side of professional practice both in terms of how emotion can affect the individual and workplace, and corre-spondingly how the workplace can have a strong emotional impact.( Read More)
Doctorate of Education Student Presents paper at
the Gulf Research Meeting in Cambridge , UK
Nadera Alborno, our Doctorate of Education student participated in a workshop in Cambridge University, UK in July 2012. The topic of the workshop was "The impact of Globalization on women in the GCC." She presented a paper titled, "Globalization and the Employment of Women with Disabilities in the UAE". The paper explored the employment challenges of women with disabilities and proposed recommendations to improve their situation. It addressed the challenges facing disabled Emirati women in the workplace. The paper was well received and many interesting suggestions were noted for the final draft of this paper for publication. Nadera's paper created awareness among the participants that some effort was being made in the UAE towards the rights of people with disabilities.

BUiD at TESOL Arabia 2012 Dr. Denise Whitlock, Sen-ior Lecturer in Information Technology with Open University, UK, delivered a professional development session to all academics on applying eAs-
sessment and Feedback on 21st February, 2012. Dr. Whitlock specializes in building feedback models in e-assessment sys-tems and won an Open University Teaching Award for con-structing an electronic feedback system known as eMentor. Her interactive workshop introduced the UK‟s Open Univer-sity current research about computer modelling of student feedback. Participants were not only engaged in the considera-tion of this approach and cutting edge work on e-feedback, but also reflected on feedback per se by re-visiting samples of marked scripts. Academics were also shown opportunities to consider ways in how these ideas might be incorporated into their own practice. Dr Whitlock has kindly agreed to be a BUiD visiting Professor for 2012-2015

A BUiD
alumni
graduate
was invited
to talk to
dissertation
students on
February
11, 2012.
Mohamed
Shoib, a
graduate of
Information Technology, gave an informal but motivating talk to
dissertation students. Dhuha Fadhel, who leads the dissertation
support group, came up with the brilliant suggestion of inviting
alumni to give motivational talks and this was then organised by
the Academic Success Unit. Mohamed Shoaib graduated with a
distinction in June 2011 and was also awarded Student of the Year.
All students across programmes who have completed taught mod-
ules were invited for this session but there were only 4 participants:
two Education, one PM and one F&B.
Mohamed initiated the session by asking students to say some-
thing about themselves, their respective progress in their disserta-
tions and what problems they are facing. This helped to break the
ice and students willingly and openly shared their feelings, thoughts
and fears. A couple of students expressed how particular personal
and academic reasons had combined to reduce their motivational
levels.
Mohamed Shoaib related his personal experience in completing his
own dissertation. Although it helped that he was a full-time stu-
dent, his motivation mainly stemmed from the fact that he was
research assistant to his supervisor which made him feel like he
was contributing to unique research. While he conceded that the
students were not in the same situation as they were all ladies jug-
gling careers and families, he advised to view their work as unique
and special so they can sustain motivation. He also suggested that
the students not just approach their dissertations as a piece of
work to complete their degrees but as a potential paper for a future
conference. This, he claimed, would instigate them to focus on
quality rather than just completion. Shoaib himself said, “it was
nice meeting students and sharing my experiences with them….I
appreciate BUiD‟s continued relationship with alumni.”
It is hoped that more BUiD alumni will agree to return and give
similar talks so that current BUiD students can be motivated by
sharing in the success of someone who experienced a similar jour-
ney. This will also help maintain links with alumni and the greater
community.

“Think of your work as unique”:
Motivational Talk by BUiD Alumni to Dissertation Support Group
Writing Centre Student Writers of the Month
Some students have been actively engaging with and utilizing
Academic Success Unit services effectively. In a bid to recog-
nize such committed students, the Academic Success Unit
would like to identify 2 students who stand out as students
who have really taken steps to develop learner autonomy while
using ASU services.
Seema Nambiar (M.Ed): Seema attended most if not all
ASU workshops since she joined in January 2011. She has de-
veloped critical thinking skills and learnt to reflect on her writ-
ing skills towards being a better academic writer. When Seema
books an appointment at the Writing Centre, she always brings
a sample of writing with clear questions on her doubts. Rather
than relying on her tutor to supply all the answers, she prefers
to embark on inquiry-based discussion that allows her to revisit
and improve her writing.
Seema‟s opinion on using the Writing Centre:
I have benefitted greatly from utilizing the Writing Centre
of the Academic Success Unit. The individual sessions
mentored me into looking at my work more as a re-
searcher pursuing academic writing skills than a journal-
ist (what I used to do) writing for the lay reader. I have
received clear guidance on the appropriate referencing
style and assignment formatting to ensure a smooth flow
through the research work. The sessions have also helped
clear my nagging doubts about the correct usage of the
English grammar. I have always left the session satisfied
that my work reads much better with greater clarity of
purpose.
Brahim Ziane (PM): Brahim too has attended most ASU
workshops. He is also very conscientious with his work and
always comes with a sample of writing and queries for an indi-
vidual appointment. He respects Writing Centre procedures
and is very open to learning. Brahim is one of the few students
who has explored many of language links available on Black-
board because when he tries something out, he ensures that he
gives ASU feedback too on the link.
Brahim says: The Writing Centre for me is an invaluable
resource, it helped me a lot to overcome the language
barrier and meet the expectations of a British-English
academic level, I really appreciate the full support I re-
ceived from all of the well-experienced tutors, especially
Radhika who provide me a precious individual support so
I was able to improve my writing effectively and aced all
my assignment marks. With the Writing Center services I
am sure that I can keep moving forward.

BUiD was one of the sponsors for
the horse races at Jebel Ali Horse
Racing Club held on 2nd December
2011 and 13th January 2012.The
testimony of one of the students
who attended the January Horse
Racing event.
“I truly enjoyed the event. The
weather, the company, the food
were all perfect and everything well
organised. Good timing and perfect
way of spending Friday with family
and loved ones. I'm really thankful
to BUiD for an invite!!
When it comes to horses, I think they are one of the most beau-
tiful, smart and loyal animals. I love animals in general and I
think they are part of our planet just as much as the humans,
and should be taken care of and treated well.
I was born in the village and raised on the farm, where we had
all types of domestic animals including horses of course. I used
to ride when I was a child. Its been many years though that I
immigrated to the city, and eventually to another country. But I
still adore horses.
Thanks again and hope to spend more time with BUiD family
at such events.
Sincerely,
Iryna Akulenka, M Sc CLDR student
