Well-developed Infrastructure for Land, Sea, and Air Transportation
02|Well-developed Infrastructure
6
Transportation infrastructure has been developed throughout Kyushu including ports, airports, Shinkansen lines, and expressways.
After the entire route of the Kyushu Shinkansen opened in 2011, people can now travel from the north (Hakata Station) to the south (Kagoshima-Chuo Station) ofKyushu in approximately one hour and twenty minutes.
Furthermore, the opening of the Higashi Kyushu Expressway (Kitakyushu –Miyazaki) in April 2015 connected the expressways of Kyushu in a loop, and is largely expected to have networking effects such as an increase in the transportation of people, goods, and money within Kyushu.
Infrastructure for all land, sea, and air transportation is available not just domestically, such as to Tokyo and Osaka, but also internationally, mainly within Asia. Easy access to major cities in Asia, in particular, is a characteristic of Kyushu.

Japan’s leading automobile production baseAutomobile production capacity in Kyushu exceeds 1.35 million vehicles, accounting for approximately 15% of Japan’s annual automobile production. Now (in 2015) over 900 auto-related companies can be found all over Kyushu.
High value-added semiconductor productionKyushu has been called the “Silicon Island” since 1970s and the current manufactured product shipment value for the entire semiconductor industry is 1.4 trillion yen or greater. The share of integrated circuit (IC) shipment value accounts for 30% of the entire country and 900 semiconductor-related companies are concentrated in the region.
Cluster of biotechnology, medical equipment, cosmetics-related institutionsKyushu is home to traditional fermentation industries (e.g. miso, soy sauce and shochu), and also has many biotechnology-related companies, universities and research institutes (including the health food industry). In Oita and Miyazaki prefectures, the governments, industry and academia in the medical field related to blood and blood vessels collaborate to promote the Higashi Kyushu Medical Valley concept.Genkaicho, in Karatsu City, Saga Prefecture, is working to promote the Karatsu Cosmetics concept, which aims for a concentration of cosmetics-related industries through collaboration with overseas entities.
Cluster of environmental recycling- and renewable energy-related companiesIn Kyushu, through the experience of having overcome pollution, environmental recycling technologies, such as recycling and purification of soil and water, have been concentrated in Kyushu. Kyushu is also rich in renewable energy resources including solar power and geothermal power, which makes the region a leading area in the energy field. Furthermore, in recent years, more environmental technologies are being expanded overseas and more foreign environmental delegations visiting Kyushu, mainly from Asia.
Kyushu: A Great Source of Food03|Attractive Industries
8
Kyushu is a food supply base producing 20% of the country’s agricultural production. Livestock, vegetables and fruits are its main production composed of various commodity items. Livestock has the largest production value, which accounts for 25% of that of the whole of Japan.
Food export is also an increasing trend. Brand-name beef from various places in Kyushu; seafood such as adult and young yellowtails; luxury Amaou strawberries from Fukuoka Prefecture; and Unshu Mikan orange are all popular overseas. The amount of green tea leaves exported is also increasing due to a growing global health-consciousness.
A variety of meat, fish, vegetables and fruits are produced in Kyushu, which are fresh and of a high quality. Tourists from both Japan and overseas love Kyushu’s food as it is reasonably priced and delicious. The region is also famous for alcohol such as shochu and sake.

Living Is Comfortable in KyushuFukuoka City: Well-developed business and living environment Compared to Tokyo, Kyushu is said to be nicer to live in, with a warm climate, delicious food, a large land area, and friendly people,
among other aspects. Fukuoka City, in particular, is recognized as a compact city where city functions and the extensive public transportation system are concentrated within a 3-km radius. Despite having the 5th largest scale of economy in Japan, compared to other major cities like Tokyo, consumer prices and average rents are low and so are living costs. Furthermore, since the urban area is close to natural environments, such as the ocean and mountains, it can be said that it is a city of comfortable living where people, the city, and the nature coexist.
In addition, the increase in population of Fukuoka City is ranked the top in Japan except Metropolitan Tokyo special district (2015 Population Census). As mentioned earlier, the youth rate is 19.5%, which is the top of the 20 government-designated cities in Japan. The city is selected by many people and further growth is expected.
It has received high reputation from overseas as it was ranked the seventh in the world’s easy-to-live city ranking conducted by a UK magazine, MONOCLE (2016). Such city development with organized business and living environments is also expected for other cities in Kyushu.

Yakushima (Kagoshima Prefecture)
Registered as World Natural Heritage Site in 1993, Yakushima in Kagoshima Prefecture is an island located approximately 60 km south-southwest of Sada Cape in Kagoshima Prefecture, the southernmost point of the mainland. It has over 40 mountains approximately 1,000 m high, including the highest summit in Kyushu and also one of the 100 great mountains in Japan, Mt. Miyanoura, and the area is called the “alps on the ocean.”
Unique scenery and ecosystems, including 1,000-year-old Yaku cedar, continuous vegetation at all altitudes, and important ecosystem transitions are appreciated as significantly valuable by academics and popular among people. The island possesses a mysterious charm due to having approximately 1,500 different ecosystems inhabiting one single island.

Japan’s Meiji Industrial Revolution Heritage: Iron and Steel, Shipbuilding and Coal Mining
The sites of Japan’s Meiji Industrial Revolution: Iron and Steel, Shipbuilding and Coal Mining, mainly located in Kyushu and Yamaguchi, were registered as World Cultural Heritage Sites in 2015. One of the sites, Gunkanjima in Nagasaki Prefecture, is a small island with an underwater coal mine. Surrounded entirely by a quay and with high-rise reinforced concrete buildings, the island has been named Gunkajima as its appearance reminds people of a battleship.
The island flourished from the Meiji era to the Showa era and approximately 5,300 people lived there in 1960 at its peak to assist in the modernization of Japan. As main energy sources shifted from coal to petroleum oil, the mine was closed in 1974 and the island was deserted. A number of abandoned buildings still remain, reminding people of its prosperous past and it attracts many tourists.

We appreciate the advantage of a 90-minute trip between Shanghai and Fukuoka. It is a merit of Fukuoka that the airport is close to the city. (Wholesale and retail sector)
We set up an office here because it is close to Asia, in particular Dalian where our group company is and Tokyo where our parent company is located. In addition, office rental and labor cost were both lower than those of Tokyo and Osaka at the time when we were looking for an office in Japan. (Information and telecommunications sector)
Daylight hours are longer in Kyushu and it is close to the rest of Asia. We valued these points when we made the decision. (Manufacturing sector)
Accessibility to Asia and clustering clients and related companies were fundamental to our decision. Due to the business enhancement of our clients in Kyushu, the superiority of our Kyushu plant is increasing. (Manufacturing sector)
It is well-received by our foreign employees. It is easier to live compared to Tokyo, commodity prices are lower, everything (including tourist spots) is in a close proximity, as well as beautiful cities, good food, etc. (Information and telecommunications sector)

They are based in Fukuoka in Kyushu, but utilizing Internet marketing enables them to conduct the same level of business as in Tokyo or Osaka only with much lower costs. They have applicants from all over Japan.
Living in Fukuoka, you can bike from your home to your office. The airport is located very close to the city and access to international flights is surprisingly convenient. It is one of Fukuoka’s characteristics that city functions are neatly concentrated in a compact city and we are satisfied with the business environment of Fukuoka City.

Fukuoka City National Strategic Special Zonefor Global Startups & Job Creation
08|National and Municipal Aid for Investment in Japan
C
The “Fukuoka City National Strategic Special Zone for Global Startups & Job Creation” program provides extensive assistance for foreigners who are starting a business in the city.
Kabushiki Kaisha Ikkai (Fukuoka City)Ikkai runs a crowdsourcing platform allowing corporations and
individuals to order a one-time job (from daily tasks, such as cleaning a room, to tasks requiring skills, such as programming) in a speedy, safe, and easy manner. One of the reasons our company chose Fukuoka City for its base is
their assistance program with a Startup Visa. The biggest problem for a foreigner who is starting a business in Japan is to obtain a visa. Authorized as National Strategic Special Zone, Fukuoka City issues their own startup visa to mitigate requirements for foreigners to support the start of their business.
In addition, rent subsidies, reduced corporate taxes, and business plan consultations at Startup Cafe are available. This creates, through support of Fukuoka City and the Japanese government, an environment that we can say makes Fukuoka the best city in Japan to start a business.
