Commodore’s Welcome

BYC’s 90th Anniversary Banquet & BallHis Excellency, the Governor General Sir Elliott Belgrave; Senator Hon. Darcy Boyce; Dr Karl Watson - President, Barbados National Trust; Trustees and Past Commodores; Honorary Life Members; Members of the Committee of Management, Members and their guests.

It is indeed my special honour and pleasure tonight to welcome all of you to the Barbados Yacht Club as we celebrate the 90th Anniversary of the Club. This is no small achievement as while many institutions have faltered along the path of time - the Club has stayed on the course set by our founding fathers and tonight we can be proud that the Club is still sailing on the rhumb line.

Quite appropriately, the theme of my welcome address is based on ‘Memories’ - my memories since joining the Club in 1985 and other memories passed on from members or compiled from the records.

To date, having served on the Committee for a total of eight years; it is my considered opinion that the success of the Club over the past 90 years was, in large measure, due to three things - ‘Strength of Leadership’ - ‘Members Support’ and our ‘Dedicated Staff ’.

Strength Of LeadershipOn this occasion we must reflect on the ‘Leadership’ provided by our five ‘founding fathers’- Col William Bowring, Messrs EA Hinkson, JH Wilkinson, EE Thorn and CFB Jones who met on August 23, 1924 at the ‘Bridgetown Club’ to consider the formation of the Yacht Club. Four very important bold resolutions, that planted the seed of the Club we know today, were tabled and approved at that initial meeting 90 years ago;

1) The election of the first Committee of Management - Col. W. Bowring (Commodore); Mr SC Thorne (Vice Commodore); Mr CBF Jones (Hon Secretary/Treasurer); Messrs JH Wilkinson, EE Thorne and Lt Col. HIF Yates as Committee members.

2) A Membership fee of $12/year for gentlemen and ladies.

It was also agreed that “anygentlemanmemberbeentitledtoallowtheladymembersofhisfamilyresidingunderhisrooftoenjoytheprivilegesoftheClubwithoutanyadditionalfee.”(We should carefully note the wording - the lady members of the family residing under his roof - this would imply that a spouse and/or other ladies under the same roof may be included).

3) An agreement in principle to lease “Shot Hall” from the British Union Oil Company.

4) Approval of a Constitution and Set of Rules for the Club. A short four months later, on December 26, 1924, the Club was officially opened by Governor Sir Charles O’Brien - in this very building. Through the years the Club has been well served by the leadership of 17 Commodores. Commodore Col Bowring served for 21 years during the Club’s infancy and he was followed by Commodore JH Wilkinson (18 years) and Commodore EE Thorne (14 years). These three gentlemen served for 53 of the 90 years we now celebrate - what a remarkable feat. Now in my third year as Commodore, I can easily relate to the enormity of their contribution and their stamina to steer the course from the cockpit. Thankfully the constitution was revised some years ago to limit a Commodore’s term to a maximum of three consecutive years.

As the 18th Commodore I am tonight honoured to be walking in the footprints left by the distinguished leaders of this Club - I am very confident others will continue the tradition and build on the Club’s legacy.

Members SupportOn Sept 15, 1924, at the second Committee meeting, the framework for the election of new members by the member’s ballot and not by the Committee was established; this required new members to be proposed and seconded by a member - a procedure that is generally still followed today - a ballot for the election of new members is held on the last Friday of each month.

The Club’s membership has grown over the years; today we have a total membership of 1,000, including 20 Honorary

6

Life Members with 45 to 72 years of service; those all support the Club and utilise its facilities for sailing, boating, tennis and social interaction.

Many individual members have made significant contributions to the Club from inception; however it would be remise to talk about the history of the Club without acknowledging the contributions of the ‘Hoad’ and the ‘Burke’ families, especially over the past 45 years.

Dedicated StaffNeither the longevity nor the success of the Club could have been achieved without our dedicated staff. We have been fortunate through the years to have had some outstanding loyal individuals on staff. Among the current staff compliment of forty five there are eleven with 10-14 years’ service; six with 15 -18 years’ service; two with 25-27 years’ service and one with 34 years’ service.

Many staff have contributed, however members may still have memories of the legendary head boatman Audley Beckles (61 years); Godfrey Headley, Vernese Woodroffe, Margaret Waterman and Merlene Crichlow who all served for more than 30 years; and more recently Errol Nathaniel Bignal who served with distinction for 40 years as a barman.

Milestone EventsBefore closing, I would like to share some notable milestones events for the Club through the years; • 1926 - Shot Hall property purchased by the Club • 1933 - Royal Charter granted - The Royal Barbados Yacht Club • 1942 - The day WW II came to Barbados - 4:30pm Saturday, September 11, 1942; as the cinema at the Aquatic Club was opening for its matinee movie the German U Boat U514 torpedoed the CNS Cornwallis in Carlisle Bay. (DSB Davies) • CAC Games 1965 - Tony and Bill Hoad won a Bronze Medal in sailing • World GP14 Championship 1967, Cornwall, Ontario, Canada - Jackie Hoad & William (Bill) Tempro won the Gold Medal; the first Barbadians to win a World Title in sailing. These members recently received National Honours for their contribution to sport. • October 1991 - The Official Coat of Arms of the Club was granted by the Government of Barbados, replacing the original flag and crest. • 2000 - Sharon Christie (nee Hoad) became first female to be elected Commodore. • 2006 - New Beach Bar, Kitchen and Washrooms were opened. • 2010 - LRN2Sail offered sail training at the Club. • 2010 - Fireball World Championship - was held at the Club. • 2011 - Royalist Regatta - with Prince Edward sailing in J24 class at the Club. • 2013 - 5O5’s World Championship - was held at the Club. • 2014 - Royalist Regatta - with Prince Edward sailing in J24 Class • 2014 - ‘Schooner Ruth’ launched in Carlisle Bay by a member Ian Dash, the first locally built in 100 years. • 2015 - New Staff Facilities Building, Members Gym and Boater’s Lockers Building.

Its beginnings

A meeting was held at the Bridgetown Club on Friday, August 23rd, 1924 to consider the formation of a yacht club. The meeting was called by Captain, later Col William Bowring and was attended by Messrs E A Hinkson, J H Wilkinson, E E Thorne and C F B Jones.

Four resolutions were proposed, the first one of which saw the election of Capt Bowring and Mr S C Thorne as Commodore and Vice-Commodore respectively and Mr C B F Jones as Hon Secretary/Treasurer. Messrs J H Wilkinson, E A Hinkson and E E Thorne and Liet Col H I F Yates were duly elected to the Committee of Management.

The second resolution concerned membership fees and after lengthy discussion, it was agreed that fees for the first year ending September 30th, 2915 would be fixed at $12.00 for gentlemen and ladies and there would be no entrance fee. It was also agreed the “any gentleman member be entitled to allow the lady members of his family residing under his roof to enjoy the privileges of the club without any additional fee.”

The third resolution considered an agreement between the British Union Oil Company and Capt Bowring for the lease of the property known as Shot Hall. The lease was tabled and read and it was agreed that the agreement should be sent to Mr Herbert Sealy for vetting.

A Constitution and set of Rules for the club was the fourth resolution discussed. It was agreed that until a copy of the constitution and rules of both the Royal Bermuda and Royal Jamaica Yacht Clubs had been received, for guidance in the preparation of “our constitution, the rules of the Savannah Club should govern as near as possible.”

The second meeting of the Committee of Management took place on Monday, September 15th, 1924 at the Club House. Membership was the main item on the agenda and after some discussion it was agreed that after September 30th, all candidates should be elected by members and not by the Committee and all candidates for election must be proposed and seconded by members.

The Secretary/Treasurer was instructed to enter the names of all candidates in the Candidates’ Book and to post those names on the notice board for a period of at least 14 days before being submitted for election. Balloting was set for the first Wednesday following the 14 day period and would take place between 4:00pm and 6:30pm. “At least 20 members must vote at the election of a candidate and one black ball in ten shall exclude.”

Permission was given to Lady Knaggs to hold the first dance at the club on the evening of October 3rd, 1924.

The Committee also agreed that “children accompanied by their nurses may bathe every morning of the week until 10:00am, also children accompanied by their parents (without nurses) may bathe on Wednesday and Saturday afternoons. Children, however, must not be taken into the club house.”

At their meeting on October 8th, 1924, Sir Charles O’Brien the then Governor of Barbados was made patron of the Club and at their meeting on December 10th, the Committee agreed that the official opening would be set for December 26th, 1924. They decided that “guests should be limited to a member’s family residing under the same roof, and children would not be included.”

The Secretary also presented the draft rules and by-laws of the Club from which copies would be duly made and circulated to each member of the Committee for review and comment.

Our Club was officially opened on Boxing Day, Friday December 26th, 1924 by Sir Charles O’Brien.

The Secretary/Treasurer was requested to send membership circulars to some 11 people and included in that list of names were: Norman (Sausage) Simpson of Verdun, Priscilla Skinner and E S Robinson Jr, later Sir Stanley of Constant.

The Commodore submitted a design for the Club’s burgee which was accepted by the Committee. The design was used until 1991 when Charles “Reds” Packer, the then Commodore commissioned a new design for the burgee.

The Committee also discussed the wearing of yachting caps and decided that members would be allowed to wear such a cap “provided it adhered to the uniform pattern approved by the Committee of Management.”

Three Committees to enhance the social activities of the club were established. Mr. Clifton Wright, Lady Knaggs and Mrs Yates were appointed to chair the Dancing Committee, the House Decorating Committee and the Entertainment Committee respectively.

Barbados Yacht Club 90th Anniversary

My earliest memories of the Yacht Club start from approximately 1934 and I became a member in 1943.

BuildingsOn either side of the “circle” just inside of the main entrance of the Yacht Club were two “gatehouses.” One was used as a storage room for gardening equipment and the other was used as the “Children’s Room.” This was stocked with children’s magazines etc. since children were not allowed in any section of the Club House at that time. I am not sure when these were removed.

TreesThe oldest tree is the large almond tree on the beach just outside the present changing rooms. I suspect this well over 100 years old. I have been told that the seven cabbage palm trees on the northern boundary were planted when the

Yacht Club was started. Right on the north end of the beach, there used to be two large and old tamarind trees in the area where the boat shed now stands. There was also a very large old sea grape tree which grew roughly in the path where boats are now launched and hauled up, and about 30 yards to the south of that was another smaller old almond tree.

The two large Pride of India trees in the car park were planted there in the late 1930’s - early 1940’s. Both were blown over during Hurricane Janet in September 1955. On a subsequent Saturday afternoon, a group of us borrowed a tractor and pulled both tress back upright and “propped” them securely - and they are there today, even after the recent Hurricane Ivan.

Boats and SailingFor me, however, the main interest of the Yacht Club has always been in the area of boats and sailing.

In the 1930’s my brother Geoff and I developed an early interest in boats and obtained a fairly old rowboat, probably about 10 feet long. We were given strict instructions by our parents that we had to remain within certain areas adjacent to the beach, roughly from Needham’s Point to the then Harbour Police Pier situated near the current site of The Boatyard.

We mage ragged, crude sails of flour bags for this dinghy, and used assorted poles to substitute for mast and boom.

In that era, the Yacht Club staged regular series of Saturday afternoon races and we were intrigued to witness the action in Carlisle Bay when these events took place. We were greatly encouraged and assisted by veteran sailors such as Mr. Teddy Hoad who skippered “Fantasy” and Mr. Arthur Skeete who skippered “Alcyone” both of the Starboat Class.

The very first race in which we took part was a Boxing Day Regatta at Speightstown where we sailed “Snipe” kindly loaned to us by Mr. Teddy Hoad. I still have in my possession a minute silver cup we received for placing 3rd in that Regatta.

Early in 1939, we were fortunate to get “Gannet” one of the18ft Seagull Class boats which were then popular in Barbados and raced her successfully for many years.

In those early days, facilities at the Yacht Club were limited. Yachts with fixed keels could only be hauled out or launched using the crane on the pier of the then Aquatic Club. This was on the site of what is now the Radisson Hotel. The boats were stored in the old boat shed at the Yacht Club in the off season. It is interesting to note that today, there is probably only about 6 inches of water at the site where these boats used to be launched!

Boats with centreboards and removable rudders like “Gannet” were brought up on the beach in cradles using long wooden rollers under the cradles. Winches were unheard of - it was all “man power!”

There were not nearly as many boats kept on the premises as today and tennis courts occupied the area now used for boat storage.

I recall that at the end of each Regatta around 1935 - 1936, all participants were invited to come ashore after the race for “light refreshments” including those of the liquid persuasion!

The end of season presentations were always made at the Yacht Club after the final Regatta so it was literally straight from the boat to proceedings and libations!

In those early days power boats were not a feature at the Club at all. It was not until after World War II that boats with outboard motors of 5 to 25 horsepower started to become popular and we occasionally organized races for those owners interested in this sport.

Ocean going cabin cruisers started to appear around the mid 1950’s. I was able to build a 25foot cabin cruiser, “Gannet II,” at the Yacht Club. This was launched in December 1961 and travelled to St. Vincent and the Grenadines in November 1962 in company with Cyril Stoute’s “Shangri-La,” Vincent Burke’s “Loisan” and Tony Tempro’s “Lampolina.” We were returning from St. Vincent in absolutely atrocious sea conditions when unfortunately “Lampolina” became damaged in the rough conditions and ultimately sank. Crew were transferred to “Loisan” and we continued on to Barbados without further incident.

In later years we have seen the advent of the much larger racing yachts which have competed successfully throughout the Caribbean. The facilities for handling these at the Yacht Club now include a winching system, tractor and many other necessary conveniences.

It is absolutely great nowadays to see the encouragement given youngsters to learn and enjoy sailing! Using Barbados Yacht Club facilities, sailing classes are well organised and attended and several types of small sailing boats are available for this purpose. This is already paying off as demonstrated by the stellar performance of many of these junior sailors who are currently representing Barbados in overseas competition. Had these opportunities been offered when I was young, my parents would seldom have seen me at home!

My congratulations go out to the Barbados Yacht Club on attaining their 90th Anniversary. The plans for the future augur well for the continued growth of the Club and for the future of sailing for young people in Barbados.

The Heraldry Of The Barbados Yacht Club

As deemed appropriate in March 1991, the Management Committee and Commodore Charles F Packer commissioned a contemporary emblem for the Barbados Yacht Club. The previous insignia featured a Royal Coronet, a chevron and a flying fish, and was utilised from 1932 to 1967. It was granted to the Yacht Club during the empirical reign of King George V. Therefore a new design was sought to convey the heritage of the past within the society of a post-independence Barbados.

The Board of Management retained the expertise of Heraldic Artist Ann Rudder, who prepared a portfolio of sample logos for the Yacht Club with relevant marks of identity for the Flag, Burgee, Letterhead and all Properties thereof. The chosen logos were submitted to the Cabinet Office of the Government of Barbados. Permission of use was granted on October 17th, 1991 for the following emblem as blazoned:

Sable, issuant of a fess wavy Aqua and Azure at honour point a chevron Or, conjoined in chief each to the dexter and sinister with three piles nebuly Argent; surmounted in pale by a trident anchor stocked of the first, fimbrated and fluked of the last, cabled and bearing an annulet of the fourth, upon which the initials B Y C are displayed.

The Coat of Arms of the Barbados Yacht Club depicts a Golden Chevron arising from a wavy blue sea. This symbol has been retained from the original grant. The word is derived from French chevron, to describe a gable rafter for the roof of a building or the central beam for the keel of a ship. Symbolically this would convey protection or shelter on land or sea. An early grant for the Carpenters’ Guild dated 1333, displayed the chevron with three drafting compasses. Other worshipful companies such as the Joiners and the Masons added the ‘L’ square to their badges. Such fraternities were concerned “with the mutual assistance of members of their brotherhoods in poverty, sickness and death.” The duty of building individual moral character within

the preservation of these essentially all male craft guilds was the foundation of most Masonic lodges, which retain the compass and ‘L’ square emblem in modern times.

The anchor originated from pre-Roman times. It became known to Christian seafarers whose scriptures told of, “Which hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast.” Hebrew 6:19. Subsequently the anchor became the symbol of Bishop Nicholas, Patron Saint of sailors, travellers and children. Mythically, Poseidon (Neptune) ruler of oceans possessed the Trident-Staff upheld by ‘Britannia’ who ruled the seas. Although Barbados ‘broke’ from empire on November 30th1966, the trident head was retained to indicate a civil independence and is foremost of all national emblems. Therefore the grant to the Barbados Yacht Club is significant.

quietly away. The Cornwallis was temporarily repaired and eventually sailed for the United States for further repairs. Regrettable she was later again torpedoed and sunk.

However on July 8th 1943 a Liberator aircraft BZ721 of 224 Squadron RAF Coastal Command, the Squadron with which I served as Air Gunner, sighted a U Boat amongst Spanish trawlers in the Bay of Biscay. Squadron Leader Bullock DSO DFC and BAR immediately attacked with depth charges. The U Boat was seen to submerge, only to re-appear with its tail up and it eventually sank with all hands. It was Auffernan’s submarine, the U514 that had recently left port on its fourth patrol bound for South Africa.

September 11th 1942:The Day WW II Came to Barbados

On a bright and sunny Saturday afternoon around 4:30pm, just when the cinema at the Aquatic Club was opening for its usual matinee film, there was a tremendous explosion in Carlisle Bay. One lady patron was heard to exclaim “My God, we are being attacked - call the Governor, call the Police.” In fact she was quite right, in a way. It was a U Boat U514 captained by Kapitanleutnant Hans J H Aufferman that had blasted a hole in the anti-submarine nets stretched across Carlisle Bay in his attempt to torpedo the CNS Cornwallis which was lying at anchor in the Bay.

He succeeded in doing just that, and it was possibly the fifth or sixth torpedo that blasted a huge hole in the starboard side of the Cornwallis. The vessel started to take on water but her Captain, who must have been a very quick-witted gentleman, and who must have had steam up, slipped his anchor and beached the vessel on the northern part of the Esplanade. By this time the local Defence Forces had commenced firing their artillery from Needhams Point and other points of advantage. However U514 slipped

The Frontenac Regatta and Trophy

The Frontenac Regatta has been one of the feature yachting events on the calendar of the Barbados Yacht Club since 1949. The handsome trophy presented to the winner of this regatta has, since then, been one of the most prized.

Frontenac was a popular Canadian beer imported and distributed by R M Jones & Co. Ltd. Mr. Briggs Collins, the then Chief Executive Officer of this company, presented the Frontenac Trophy to the Barbados Yacht Club and stipulated that it be competed for by all yachts taking part in the annual series of races sponsored by the Club. At that time many of the yachts that took part in the Club’s regattas were locally made and outfitted with wooden spars and booms and with canvas sails cut and sewn locally. They represented a diversity of designs with varying performances. The Frontenac Regatta therefore was a handicap regatta open to all yachts that had sailed in the Club’s regatta, including the final race. Handicaps were based on the performance of the various yachts during these races. These regulations therefore satisfied the stipulation of the sponsor and made the event a fiercely competitive one.

With time, the nature of yachts sailed in the Club’s regattas changed and perhaps the last class of locally constructed yachts that competed for the Trophy was the Lightning Class of the 80’s. As a consequence, the winners of the Frontenac Regatta have reflected this change.

Yachtsmen of yesteryear will remember names such as Sidney Nurse, Peter Ince, Vincent Burke, Gerald Nicholls and Teddy Hoad to mention a few. But for the Stoute family of three, the Frontenac Regatta might be described as a “family affair” since all three members have competed for and won the coveted trophy.

Donald, Tony and Maureen, sons and daughter of Edgar and Irene Stoute were all winners of the Frontenac Trophy. Indeed, Donald and Tony won the first ever Frontenac Regatta sailed in 1949. Donald as helmsman, was then 19 years of age and recalls the close contest in “Invader” with Sydney Nurse, many years his senior, skippering “Clytie”. The winner was only decided on the final tack to the finish line. Both of these yachts were locally made.

The winning yacht “Invader” was made by Owen Burke of Burke’s Beach and her design, as described by Donald was “a cross between a Snipe and a Seagull”.

Tony was again on the winning yacht in 1975. By then many of the Club’s premier sailors were sailing “Fireballs,” British designed high performance dinghies. “Sensation” skippered by Arthur Edghill with Tony on the trapeze won the Frontenac Regatta.

And not to be outdone by her older brothers, Maureen Edghill nee Stoute, sailing in her Sunfish “Honey Bun” with her 14 year old son Roger as crew, took the 1980 Frontenac Regatta. Maureen is the first, and only, lady to have won this coveted trophy.

The unique performances by Donald, Tony and Maureen in the Club’s premier handicap regatta is even more unique when one considers that neither of their parents were sailors. When Donald and Tony won the first ever Frontenac Regatta they were not then members of the Club. The sails they used were cut by their father and sewn by their mother using a hand operated Singer sewing machine with the living room as their sail loft!

The handsome Frontenac Trophy has been retired and adorns the shelf behind the bar at the Club. For the Stoute family and for many others, it brings back fond sailing memories of yesteryear.

Shot Hall: The Barbados Yacht Club

The land on which the BARBADOS YACHT CLUB, formerly ‘SHOT HALL’, is located, was originally part of the Bay Plantation, which in 1790 consisted of 208 acres facing on Carlisle Bay and extending nearly to Charles Fort.

In September 1790 John Beckles, who owned the plantation, sold off twenty two acres to the British Army for the garrison then being established at St.Ann’s. Its northern boundary was the ground now occupied by the Grand Barbados Beach Resort and the neighbouring buildings running eastward to Bay Street.

On this ground, flanked by the road leading to Gravesend Beach, the Royal Engineers erected certain buildings and a pier and a wharf which were in use by the Forces up until their withdrawal in 1905-06.

In May 1795 John Beckles sold seven acres of land bordering on the Engineer’s establishment to John Savery for three hundred pounds sterling; then in October 1802 Savery sold four and three-quarter acres of this to the Army. This

enabled the Engineers’ establishment to be extended almost as far as where the Bay Street Esplanade is now located, and its extremity is still marked by a portion of the old Garrison wall bearing the inscription WD1.

In 1822 a strip of one and three-quarter acres of beach land containing a long pond, still possessed by Beckles, was finally sold by him to the Army for fifty pounds sterling and added to the land already occupied by the Royal Engineers. The area, by this time, had become known as the Lower Arsenal, in contradistinction to the Upper Arsenal, which lay within St.Ann’s Fort.

The officer commanding the Royal Engineers, officially styled the Commanding Royal Engineer, or C.R.E., originally had his living quarters and office in what is now called Bush Hill House. Brigadier-General, Sir Charles Shipley, appointed C.R.E. in 1796, was still resident there in 1809, when, on 6May , the “Barbados Mercury” newspaper reported on “a most barbarous and diabolical murder” that had occurred the previous night between the Main Guard and near Sir Charles Shipley’s gate.

In a plan of the “Engineers Arsenal” prepared by General Shipley in 1811 and dated 30 September, he describes the Bush Hill building as “heretofore(known) by the name of the Engineers Office and Quarters “. Quite clearly his use of the word “heretofore” indicates that he no longer livedthere and this is confirmed by a related plan of the same date

Page 23: Byc 90yr booklet

21

On the withdrawal of the Forces in 1905-06 most of the Garrison buildings were put up for sale by Colonel E.J.G. Boyce, the C.R.E., on behalf of the War Department. On 23 May, 1906, the lands totaling seventeen and a half acres, together with the buildings of SHOT HALL, the Royal Engineer offices, the Army Service Corps Stores, the Naval Coal Yard and other War Department property in the coastal area, excepting the Rifle Range (600 yards), were sold as a package to the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company for Six thousand nine hundred and ninety-two pounds sterling.

SHOT HALL afterwards became the residence of Captain W.H. Owen, the Marine Superintendent of this Company. With his permission the Annual Agricultural Exhibition was held in its grounds in December 1908 and again in December 1909 when the premises of Harrison College, the customary venue, were not made available.

How long Captain Owen remained in residence is uncertain, and the next traceable tenant appears to be Ludlow C. Livingstone, United States Consul, who was in occupation 1918-1921. He was succeeded by a Colonel Yates, a British Union Oil Company executive, 1921-1923; and then by Harold Wright, a local businessman, 1923-1924 or 1925. The Barbados Yacht Club certainly was in possession of SHOT HALL in 1926. That year’s Telephone Directory gives the telephone number as 1225.

SHOT HALL underwent much structural alteration around 1936 with the object of improving its amenities as a Club. The work was reputedly executed by Mr. Albert Douglas of Egerton, St. George, a building contractor associated with Messrs C.S. Pitcher & Company, lumber and hardware merchants of Bridgetown.

The porte-cochere over the entrance to the building was erected in the early 1950’s by the engineering firm of Messrs Law and Connell.

which shows SHOT HALL, his new residence. This two-storied house, then measuring seventy feet by sixty feet, must therefore have been erected in 1810 or early 1811 at the latest.

Exactly how SHOT HALL got this name is unclear, but the name probably derived from two buildings, each sixty feet by ten feet, originally on the north side of the house described in an 1822 garrison plan as “Artillery Stores”.

SHOT HALL sustained much damage by the hurricane of 11 August, 1831, when Colonel Sir Charles F. Smith was C.R.E.A reporton the state of the garrison buildings prepared by Lieut. Cowper Rose, R.E. states”Part of the roof of this house was blown down, and the whole (building) much shaken. The sashes, frames, and doors have suffered greatly (and) a considerable part of the Chamber floor must be renewed.”

A report on the Royal Engineer establishment in Barbados published in the Royal Engineer Journal, Vol 1X. 1 October 1879 tells us:”SHOT HALL”, Barbados, is the C.R.E’s quarter and is an excellent one, next door to his office.” The report adds: “There are very good croquet and lawn tennis grounds at SHOT HALL”.
