Their family took them to the ER.” The Vermillion Fire EMS Department was notified of the fire at 5:42 p.m. Sunday. “While en route, fire units were advised that the home was fully involved and there were some minor injuries,” Callahan states in the press release. “First units on scene found a two-story home with heavy fire conditions coming from the front of the struc- ture.” In a telephone conversation with the Plain Talk Monday af- ternoon, Callahan said he was prohibited from identifying the fire victims because of privacy provisions of the federal Health Insurance Portability and Ac- countability Act (HIPAA). He also had no information regarding the conditions of the two individuals airlifted to a Minnesota hospital. According to the fire department’s press release, “a transitional attack was estab- lished and within 10 minutes, crews entered the home to find the seat of the fire,” Callahan states. “Within minutes, crews were unable to navigate in the home and conditions deterio- rated.” The release states that fire- fighters evacuated the struc- ture at that point and defensive operations were established. “Once the fire self-vented through the roof, a ladder pipe was placed into operation,” Callahan states in the press release. “Crews were unable to enter the structure due to safety concerns.” He was unable to say Monday what may have caused the fire. “At this time, it’s still under investigation,” the chief said. “We have investigators coming from other agencies to help us this afternoon. There will be people from the State Fire Marshal’s office that are going to be here to help us continue to work the scene.” He noted in his press release that water was shuttled from Vermillion to Burbank because Vermillion had the nearest hydrant system. Besides the Vermilion Fire EMS Department and the Clay County Sheriff’s Department, the Elk Point Fire and Ambu- lance, Clay Union Electric and Clay Rural Water all responded to the fire with manpower and equipment. “We were there about five hours,” Callahan said. “We’re pretty confident that it (the fire) is out at this point. We have been back twice for some hot spots that have flared up.” Fire From Page 1

The Vermillion Fire EMS Department was notified of the fire at 5:42 p.m. Sunday.

“While en route, fire units were advised that the home was fully involved and there were some minor injuries,” Callahan states in the press release. “First units on scene found a two-story home with heavy fire conditions coming from the front of the struc-ture.”

In a telephone conversation with the Plain Talk Monday af-ternoon, Callahan said he was prohibited from identifying the fire victims because of privacy provisions of the federal Health Insurance Portability and Ac-countability Act (HIPAA).

He also had no information regarding the conditions of the two individuals airlifted to a Minnesota hospital.

According to the fire department’s press release, “a transitional attack was estab-lished and within 10 minutes, crews entered the home to find the seat of the fire,” Callahan states. “Within minutes, crews were unable to navigate in the home and conditions deterio-rated.”

The release states that fire-fighters evacuated the struc-ture at that point and defensive operations were established.

“Once the fire self-vented through the roof, a ladder pipe was placed into operation,” Callahan states in the press release. “Crews were unable to enter the structure due to safety concerns.”

He was unable to say Monday what may have caused the fire.

“At this time, it’s still under investigation,” the chief said. “We have investigators coming from other agencies to help us this afternoon. There will be people from the State Fire Marshal’s office that are going to be here to help us continue to work the scene.”

He noted in his press release that water was shuttled from Vermillion to Burbank because Vermillion had the nearest hydrant system.

Besides the Vermilion Fire EMS Department and the Clay County Sheriff’s Department, the Elk Point Fire and Ambu-lance, Clay Union Electric and Clay Rural Water all responded to the fire with manpower and equipment.

“We were there about five hours,” Callahan said. “We’re pretty confident that it (the fire) is out at this point. We have been back twice for some hot spots that have flared up.”
