Dear Friends,

During July and August of 2014, my daughter decided to spend the summer in Israel

volunteering in Tel Aviv. Little did any of us know back then, that over 5,000 missiles

would be fired at Israel from Gaza and Lebanon during a period which became

known as ‘Operation Protective Edge’. Like many Israelis she spent weeks running

from one bomb shelter to another. As our concern for the safety of our daughter and

all Israelis grew, we, along with many other parents of volunteers, eagerly awaited

their safe return.

It was the first time missiles were able to reach the center of Israel, putting the National

Blood Bank - Israel’s blood supply, the lifeline of the nation - and its people at great

risk. Without warning, Magen David Adom was forced to move crucial equipment

and personnel into a small underground shelter, where they had to function for the

rest of the operation. Israel’s blood supply grew alarmingly low and the need for a

New Blood Center that could sustain Israel’s needs in terms of security and capacity

and today’s geopolitical reality, became imperative.

Magen David Adom is valued as one of Israel’s most iconic organizations, held in

the highest esteem by every race, religion and culture in the land. It provides Israel’s

emergency medical and blood services, responsible for the entire country’s blood

collection, processing and distribution. As such, Canadian Magen David Adom has

been asked to join an international effort to raise funds for a New Blood Center.

A Blood Center that will be missile, biological and chemical warfare-proof, with a

significant part of its structure built underground for security reasons.

We are proud to be presenting MDA’s inaugural Toronto Gala Dinner on November

5th, 2017 and would be honoured to have you join us. It is guaranteed to be an

exciting and entertaining evening with distinguished guest speakers including Prof.

Eilat Shinar, the Director of Magen David Adom Blood Services, who will be our

keynote speaker.
