Dr. Shanta turns 90!

Cancer Institute Foundation wishes

Dr. Shanta a very happy birthday! She

turned 90 on March 11, 2017. She is an

inspiration for all of us.

Besides being a prominent cancer

specialist, she is known for her

outstanding and significant efforts in

making quality and affordable cancer

treatment available in India. Dr.

Shanta joined the Cancer Institute in

1954 when Dr. Muthulakshmi Reddy

set it up and she hasn’t looked back

ever since. Today Adyar Cancer Institute has grown from a 12-bed, two-doctor cottage hospital

to an institution that has a reputation for providing subsidized treatment to the poor. Dr. Shanta

has been conferred many accolades including Ramon Magsaysay, Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan

and Padma Vibhushan!

We pray to the Almighty to give her strength to continue her yeomen services for many more

years to come! Please join us in wishing her a happy birthday!

Launch of Million Dollar Project

On the occasion of the 90th birthday of Dr. Shanta

Cancer Institute Foundation is launching the

Million Dollar Project. The goal of the project is to

raise one million dollars for Cancer Screening &

Prevention Centers in 3 southern districts of Tamil

Nadu.

These centers will provide easy access to quality

preventive care to people who live in south Tamil

Nadu who cannot afford to travel to Chennai for

diagnosis. These centers will help with early

diagnosis of cancer to these patients which will

greatly increase their chances of survival.

The centers will also offer palliative care for

patients with advanced stage of cancer. The centers will be fitted with the state of the art

equipment and staffed with qualified oncologists. After initial diagnosis, patients will be referred

to Adyar Cancer Institute for advanced treatment, if necessary.

Please donate generously for this project. You can donate at the front desk or online at

http://bit.ly/Donate2CIF.

If you want to learn more about the project, please contact us by email at [email protected].

Welcome Mr. Delhi Ganesh!

ancer Institute Foundation is

very honored that Mr. Delhi

Ganesh agreed to take time off

his busy schedule to be part of this

fundraising play. When we approached

him with the request he immediately

agreed to it because of his highest regard

for Adyar Cancer Institute and Dr.

Shanta. We are also doubly thrilled that

he is doing this on the occasion of

celebrating Dr. Shanta’s 90th birthday!

Most of you know how much hard work

goes into bringing out a play like this.

Mr. Delhi Ganesh has been part and

parcel of this team from the beginning.

Being a top artiste in his field he never

let his ego come in the way of working

with amateur artistes. He has been

spending long hours on the Skype

rehearsing with the team and providing

valuable coaching to them as well. We

are very thankful for his dedication,

sincerity and professionalism.

How many of you know these facts

about Mr. Delhi Ganesh?

He was born in Tirunelveli and served in

Indian Air Force. He used to entertain

jawans by staging plays.

After migrating to Chennai he became

even more popular on stage with plays

like "Gauri Kalyanam" and "Pattanam

Pravesam" which was later made into a

successful film by K. Balachander.

The Balachander school honed his

acting skills and made him very popular

Tamil character artist in films in the 80's

and 90's. Who can forget his great

comedy timing with Kamalhassan in

films like 'Michael Madan Kamaraj',

`Avai Shanmughi', 'Tenali' and the

Maniratnam classic 'Nayakan'.

According to Mr. Delhi Ganesh some of

the best films that he has done are in the

80's, "Sindhu Bhairavi", "Pasi" and

above all "Nayakan".

He has done over 500 films in the last

30 years. He was awarded Tamil Nadu

State Film Award Special Prize for his

role in the film “Pasi”. He has also

received “Kalaimamani” award.
