RU Ready......for your 10 minutes of fame?
On November 5th
, 2011 Cap U will host what promises to be a very
forward looking TEDx
CapU event
(x = independently organized TED event). The target audience is
entrepreneurs and the topic is change, thus the title RU Ready?
Over 350 of Vancouvers movers and shakers will attend this event
in person, but thousands more will participate via live streaming,
twitter, huddles and website access! The day will feature a number
of TEDTalks videos, but the real draw will be nine very dynamic
speakers who will share their insights about what changes are on
the horizon in demographics, expectations and technology... as well
as more than a few thoughts on how to deal with it.
One of those speakers could be you! A spot is being offered to 1
lucky Capilano University student and all you need to do to claim
that spot is submit a short video (3-5 minutes), plus a document of
1000 words or less focusing on the changes you would like to
address with business leaders on the subject of changing
expectations. Were looking for a great story, passion, humour and
an idea of how businesses might adjust to meet your expectations.
All entries must be received by September 30th and will be
reviewed by the TEDxCapUSpeakers Committee during the next
week. The top 3 entrants will become finalists, invited by the
committee to deliver a 10 minute presentation which represents
what they intend to deliver on November 5th
at TEDxCapU. From the
finalists, a competition winner will be selected.

participants and special guests, a video of your presentation and unrestricted bragging rights are just a few of
payoffs you can expect if you win this spot!
In accordance with the TEDx rules, you wont be able to sell your produce or directly promote your business (if you
have a business) during the up to 10 minutes youll be on stage, but that wont stop the participants from wanting
to know more about you!
Who knows? Your presentation may even go viral! So get typing or fire up that flip cam and deliver your entry to
Patricia Lambert at LB116L by NOON on Friday, September 30th.

What speakers need to know
At the event: You will sit in the audience for most of the event. You will enter the stage from the wings. You
are expected to stay for the whole event, and to mingle during breaks.
During your talk: Your talk must not go over the allotted time (10 minutes). You will be advised in advance
how you'll be cued when your time has run out.
After your talk: Again, you are expected to remain at the event throughout the day; at minimum, you're
expected to stay through the conversation break following your talk, so attendees can approach you and ask
questions.
The TED Commandments
These 10 tips are given to all TED Conference speakers as they prepare their TEDTalks. They will help you craft talks
that will have a profound impact on your audience.
1. Dream big. Strive to create the best talk you have ever given. Reveal something never seen before. Do
something the audience will remember forever. Share an idea that could change the world.2. Show us the real you. Share your passions, your dreams ... and also your fears. Be vulnerable. Speak of failure
as well as success.
3. Make the complex plain. Don't try to dazzle intellectually. Don't speak in abstractions. Explain! Give examples.
Tell stories. Be specific.
4. Connect with people's emotions. Make us laugh! Make us cry!
5. Don't flaunt your ego. Don't boast. It's the surest way to switch everyone off.
6. No selling from the stage! Unless we have specifically asked you to, do not talk about your company or
organization. And don't even think about pitching your products or services or asking for funding from stage.
7. Feel free to comment on other speakers' talks, to praise or to criticize. Controversy energizes! Enthusiastic
endorsement is powerful!
8. Don't read your talk. Notes are fine. But if the choice is between reading or rambling, then read!
9. End your talk on time. Doing otherwise is to steal time from the people that follow you. We won't allow it.
10. Rehearse your talk in front of a trusted friend ... for timing, for clarity, for impact.
