RACCARO FRIULANO 'VIGNA DEL ROLAT' 2018 Friuli • $75
260 Raccaro, a producer from Collio in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region in Northeastern Italy, produces excellent expressions of the region's unique varietals. This bottling is 100% Friulano, aged in stainless steel, and sourced entirely from the single Rolat vineyard. Friulano can be notoriously long-aging and sometimes difficult in its youth, but this bottling is fresh, inviting, and open. 2018 was a relatively ripe vintage, so the wine offers notes of apricot, herbs, and a touch of petrol, but with enough freshness and lift to keep the wine refreshing and make it an ideal match for food.
PRA 'COLLE SANT'ANTONIO' SOAVE CLASSICO 2016 Veneto • $85
164 Pra’s Colle Sant’Antonio offers a glimpse into the qualities of what ‘could be’ for one of Italy’s great whites. This is vinified in large, neutral 20HL cask, showcasing 100% overripe Garganega, creating a gorgeous expression of Soave. The most powerful of Graziano Pra’s lineup and an iconic example of the volcanic soils you'll find in Soave Classico.
LIS NERIS 'CONFINI' 2016 Friuli • $115
148 The wines of Lis Neris are grown just south of the Slovenian border, and reflect the unique winemaking tradition of Friuli. This wine is a blend of Pinot Grigio, which provides the wine with ample structure and body; Riesling, which confers bright acidity and freshness; and Gewurtztraminer - locally known as 'Traminer' - which brings intense aromatics of lychee and white flowers. Barrel fermented for richness and additional structure, this is a wine of intense presence and distinctiveness.
BENANTI ETNA BIANCO SUPERIORE 'PIETRA MARINA' 2016 Sicilia • $190
5011 Italy’s answer to Grand Cru Chablis. 100% Carricante, the grapes for this remarkable wine grow on the eastern slope of the Etna volcano at roughly 3000 feet above sea level. A wine truly at the top of its class.

CASA D'AMBRA 'FRASSITELLI' 2020Campania • $75
124 Imagine peach lemonade transformed into wine and that you're drinking it on an island beach with sea spray occassionally whipping up off the surf and into your glass. That's what drinking this wine from 100% Biancolella, a grape that reaches its purest expression here, on the island of Ischia, is like.
ROENO RIESLING 'COLLEZIONE DI FAMIGLIA' 2013 Alto Adige • $115
138 We don’t blame you if you are surprised to see a Riesling on an Italian wine list… but believe us when we tell you this wine is the real deal! The viticulture and cuisine of Alto Adige is a true melting pot of Austrian/German & Italian influences. Crisp and delicious, with the slightest kiss of sweetness to balance the wine's acidity.
CANTINA TERLAN TERLANER CLASSICO'NOVA DOMUS' 2017
Alto Adige • 175
5001 Yes, Terlan is indeed so awesome they have their own DOC, Terlaner Classico. I write "they" because it's not an estate, but a cooperative of grower-families, widely recognized as one of the best of its type in the world. The formula is 60% Pinot Bianco, 30% Chardonnay, and 10% Sauvignon Blanc. The dominance of one over the other varies with vintage, but 'Nova Domus' always exmplifies the best of each.
BORGO DEL TIGLIO 'RONCO DELLA CHIESA' 2018Friuli • 180
267 Borgo del Tiglio is a towering presence of excellence in one of Italy’s greatest but often most underachieving appellations. ‘Ronco della Chiesa’ is a single vineyard of 70 year old Friulano, planted on soils of brown marl sheltered from cold winds blowing from northeast. The vineyard was cleared by hand and planted in the late 1950s, all using ‘selection massale.’ A ‘best in class’ example of Friulano, with weight and complexity to accompany any type of cuisine. Fermentation begins in stainless steel and is completed in oak, where the wine remains until bottling prior to the subsequent years’ harvest.

CRIVELLI RUCHÈ DI CASTAGNOLE MONFERRATO 2020Piemonte • $55
651 Piedmont is dominated by the prestigious Nebbiolo grape. Dolcetto and Barbera are two well-known other varietals. But few know of Ruche, a distinctive, spice-driven, structured red that thrives in the village of Monferrato. (The varietal nearly went extinct, but for the efforts of a handful of producers who believed in its potential.) This particular example is bright and limpid in the glass, and explodes with notes of raspberries, black pepper, and cinnamon, followed by undercurrents of smoke and anise. Don't miss this stellar bottling from Crivelli, easily one of Ruche's best producers..
ROVELLOTTI GHEMME 'COSTA DEL SALMINO' 2013Piemonte • $160
752 There are a lot of great things about small wine makers: their passion, their connection to the land, their geveral joie de vivre, and the fact that you will struggle to find a climate change denier among them. You may not have heard of Alto Piemonte, a collection of sub-alpine (read chilly) villages north of the vaunted twin DOCG's Barolo and Barbaresco, but you can expect to hear more as vintages get warmer and warmer and the Nebbiolo in the previously prized south facing vieyards (read sunny) starts to struggle to find balance. This is not a porblem in Ghemme, a village located in the heart of the region that carries a 500 year reputation for producing extraordinaly elegant wine. The Rovellotti family has been there for all of it. This wine, ' Costa del Salmino' represents one of the finest Nebbiolo expressions the family produces; coming from a site first recognized for its quality in 1600. Expect racy acid, the juiciest cherry fruit, and a smile on your face.
GRACI ETNA ROSSO 'BARBABECCHI' 2014Sicilia • $350
1508 The Barbabecchi vineyard is a five acre plot of 100-year-old Nerello Mascalese grown at its limit, at 1,000 metres above sea-level; simply put, this is one of the most unique and delicious wines in the world. Arcuria, at 600 meters, is one of Etna’s finest Contrade. (Contrade on Etna is roughly the equivalent of Cru in Burgundy) Both wines are 100% Nerello Mascalese and are amongst the finest examples of this amazing varietal. Combine the very best of great Pinot Noir & Barolo, fold in an active volcano, sprinkle on the unique terroir and mystique of Sicily, and go forth unafraid. Medium bodied & extraordinarily versatile with food.

NUSSERHOF SCHIAVA 'ELDA' 2015Trentino Alto Adige • $85
421 The vineyards of Nusserhof farmed by the Mayr family since 1788 were initially positioned well outside of the alpine city of Bolzano- until the surge of post WWII growth left the 2.4ha holding situated squarely within the city center; one of the many delightful contradictions you will find in the wines of this estate. This predominantly based Schiava hailing from 90 year old vines is labeled 'Elda' to honor Henrich Mayr's wife. This wine is light to medium bodied & full of flavor, and undoubtedly true to its alpine roots.
FEUDO MONTONI NERO D'AVOLA 'VRUCARA' 2015Sicilia • $135
652 Arguably the single greatest example of this varietal. From prephylloxera vines, which Feudo, keyholders to modern day Nero D'Avola, consider their 'mother plants.' The vines in the Vrucara vineyard contain a unique and old genetic code of Nero d’Avola, guarded for centuries at Montoni. Aged 45 months in cement & 6 more in barrels.
GAJA BRUNELLO 'PIEVE SANTA RESTITUTA'2015Toscana • $195
791 Gaja is among the most storied wineries in Piedmont. The family has crafted acclaimed Barbaresco since 1859, and are credited with revolutionizing winemaking practices in the region. In 1994, Gaja eventually acquired this plot in Tuscany, and began making excellent Brunello di Montalcino. Expect the hallmarks of classic Brunello, with red fruit, earth, spice, bright acidity, and powerful structure.
EDOARDO VALENTINI MONTEPULCIANO D'ABRUZZO 2015Abruzzo • $450
1313 Until his death in 2006, Edoardo Valentini was one of the most enigmatic producers in the world, creating what many believe to be the finest wines in Abruzzo. Famously, Edoardo would produce wine in only the most pristine years and even then, from only perfect grapes, commonly selling 95 to 100% of his harvest to neighbors as bulk fruit. His estate continues to make outstanding wine, and the 2015 vintage is no exception. This wine could easily age for decades to come, but even in its youth shows the grace, power, and complexity that defined his style.

The alpine wines of Valle d’Aosta include lean, aromatic whites and correspondingly crisp reds. Better known for its coastline and the Cinque Terre, Liguria produces delicious whites and charming, quaffable light reds. The Alta Langhe region within Piemonte contains a host of Nebbiolo-based alternatives to more expensive Barolo and Barbaresco. In Lombardia, vignerons work some of world’s steepest vineyards farming the Nebbiolo of Valtellina. Franciacorta produces Méthode Champenoise sparkling wine of exceptional quality.

NORTHEAST ITALY
The Classico zones of the northeast yield some of the greatest wines in all of Italy. Friuli, vaulted into limelight by the recent orange wine fad, produces exceptional wines from unique, indigenous varietals, in addition to more recognized grapes. The semi-autonomous Trentino-Alto Adige has only been part of Italy since the end of World War I. Wine styles and varietals are correspondingly distinct.

The thin-skinned, late ripening Nebbiolo grape produces wines of high acid, alcohol, and extreme tannin with haunting aromatic complexity and great longevity — A statute from 1431 from La Morra in the Langhe proscribes a punishment ranging from the loss of a right hand to death for uprooting the vine.
The early-ripening Dolcetto provides tannic, fruity wines which are lower in acid and generally designed for youthful consumption. Barbera — Piemonte's most planted red grape — demonstrates high acidity but low tannin and is subject to a range of stylistic interpretations.

Much like Burgundy, Barolo is divided into villages and ‘Cru’ vineyards of varying terroir, prestige and quality. Modernization in technique entered Piedmont by the 1980’s, resulting in a split between the ‘traditionalists’ who retained faith in older winemaking techniques, and the ‘modernists’ who embraced barriques, shorter macerations, and a rounder style of wine. Lively debate involving strong hand gestures ensued, and knowledge of producer practices is key to understanding the profile of a given wine.

BARBARESCOSince 1958, the Produttori has been the reference point for classic Barbaresco. Founded in the poverty of the
1950s, the parish priest organized 19 struggling growers to make wine communally. The Produttori grew to about sixty members—owning the lion’s share of the greatest vineyards. The Produttori’s nine crus lie on steep
slopes composed of the classic, firm clay and limestone marl of the Langhe. Montefico & Montestefano have higher clay content & are known for rich earthy, flavors, full body & firm structure. Pajé and Mocagatta are noted for elegance. Asili, Rabajà and Pora hail from Barbaresco’s greatest (south facing) slope. Below these three icons is
the slope of Rio Sordo, yielding opulent wines.1359 Barbaresco 1971........................................................................................4251389 Barbaresco 1982........................................................................................4151393 Barbaresco 1985........................................................................................3951004 Barbaresco 1990, 3 Litre.........................................................................10703001 Barbaresco 2005, 4.5 Litre....................................................................6603002 Barbaresco 2007, 1.5 Litre....................................................................475717 Barbaresco Riserva 'Pora' 2014.........................................................205729 Barbaresco Riserva 'Ovello' 2014......................................................2051032 Barbaresco Riserva 'Ovello' 2016, 1.5 Litre......................................3951339 Barbaresco Riserva 'Ovello' 1982......................................................5901342 Barbaresco Riserva 'Rio Sordo' 1982.................................................5901345 Barbaresco Riserva 'Montestefano' 1982.........................................590

For a while things were pretty dicey in Tuscany. Chianti and Chianti Classico were a far cry from a guarantee of quality; a condition which provoked a massive shakeup of Italian wine law in the early 90’s. ‘Super Tuscan’ wines are made with international varietals: usually cabernet sauvignon and merlot. Occasionally though, these varietals find themselves into the more historic DOC/G’s of the region adding color and darker fruit while softening the texture of the thin-skinned, acidic sangiovese.

Brunello di Montalcino, a local clone of Sangiovese first isolated in 1865 by Clemente Santi, is the sole varietal permitted in the small and prestigious Tuscan DOCG of the same name. This world-renowned appellation contains only 10,000 acres of vineyards producing just over 500,000 cases of wine a year. Elevation, location, aspect and soil type exer t massive influence over the character and quality of a final wine, as do actions which reflect a ‘modern’ or ‘traditional’ approach in the winery. Rosso di Montalcino is a wine that can be released the year after harvest, absent of oak aging requirements.

At the height of the Roman empire in the first century CE, a Campanian wine sourced from the slopes of Monte Massico was among the most prominent wines of the ancient world. The tannic, dark fruited and textured Aglianico grape has the capacity to produce the longest-lived and noblest red wines of southern Italy; the DOCG of Taurasi produces the finest wines from this varietal. Fiano di Avellino is a noble Italian white varietal, while Greco di Tufo produces fantastic wines with ripeness, balance, and minerality.

Founded in 1878, the Mastroberardino family have earned themselves a place in Italy’s viticultural history as guardians & protectors of indigenous grapes of Southern Italy’s Campania region. The monumental Taurasi wines produced by this estate are exceptionally rare and stand as testament to the world class quality of the Aglianico grape and this Campanian DOCG. The 1968 Taurasi are considered to be some of the greatest wines Italy has ever produced.

Sicily is located 200 miles from Tunisia and home to approximately 5 million inhabitants. Though viticulture up to the second half of the 20th century favored mass production, trailblazers of quality such as Planeta, Marco di Bartoli, Giuseppe, Arianna Occhipinti, and the ambitious producers of Etna have pushed the pursuit of quality over quantity to the fore.
