President’s Report
Karen Stephen President Casterton Kelpie Association The Casterton Kelpie Association is once
again pleased to present this annual report
for the Australian Kelpie Muster. Our asso-
ciation is the proud organising committee for
the Casterton Kelpie Festival and the Aus-
tralian Premier Working Dog Auction.
.
This year marked two significant milestones - the 20th Annual Working Dog Auction and reaching $2 million worth of “working”’ dogs sold since the original auction held by the Casterton Apex Club in 1997. We were thrilled this year to have some of the original organising committee from the Casterton Apex Club present to cut the cake to mark the 20 year milestone. The association understands the importance for the Casterton community in holding the annual festival and auction to celebrate Casterton’s national recognition as the ‘Birthplace of the Kelpie’ breed and our ‘Mission Statement’ is simple ‘Promote Casterton as the birthplace of the kelpie for the benefit of the community’. Of course these events don’t just happen – 12 months of solid planning by our dedicated commit-tee ensures that the weekend runs smoothly. We all bring different skill sets to the table and along the way we have lots of fun and laughter. Each of you take up the challenge and make the Casterton community proud on the world stage. Darren Holmberg and his team of volunteers work tirelessly for months planning and organising each piece of infrastructure needed over the 3 day event. With over 1 kilometre of sheep yard fencing required this certainly takes brilliant organisational skills to source from local farmers, then a ‘muscle power team’ to erect and then take it all apart and return to its rightful owner – thank you all for your amazing work, and I sincerely thank you. To recognise our 20 year milestone Sharon McGrath undertook the huge project of capturing the 20 year history of our amazing event and published a book. With the assistance of Courtney Ber-trand she was able to pull together the most incredible photos and reflections from the last 20 years, that have captured the essence of the event and our community. Thursday evening always heralds the beginning of the weekend and this year we were pleased to have our local Federal Member for Wannon, Hon ‘Minister’ Dan Tehan MP officially open the weekend with the annual Casterton Acquisitive Art Competition and Exhibition held at the Town Hall. Acquisitive Art Coordinator, Sharon McGrath and the Casterton Rotary Club once again did us proud and on behalf of the association I sincerely thank them for their hours of work and quali-ty of the exhibition. As always Casterton’s main street came alive on Saturday with the Kelpie Festival – we have

been able to keep this event FREE only through the generous sponsorship of the Glenelg Shire Council, Corporations, Businesses and Individuals and the incredible support of our community Volunteers, headed up by Brian Burns. Of course the highlight for the day was breaking the World Record in the Kel-pie High Jump event with Melbourne based Tegan Eagle owner of her prized
Kelpie, Bailey taking out first prize with an unbelievable high jump of 1.951m!! This of course gave us national and international media coverage in both television and print media and some wonderful free publicity for Casterton and our event – thanks Tegan and Bailey. Under the leadership of Nancy Withers and Nicky Holmberg the 20th Annual Working Dog Auction lived up to expectation in 2016 – breaking the $2 million mark of dogs sold since the first auction in 1997. This is truly an extraordinary achievement for a small rural community and each and every person that has been involved over those last 20 years is to be congratulated. The 2016 Working Dog Auction offered 61 dogs with a clearance rate of 83.6% with an average price of $3,763 bringing the total to $2,156,859 sold since 1997. Of course the Catering Team did an amazing job at the ‘Dog Bowl’, which was a hive of activity with cold and hungry visitors savouring the delicious food on offer pre-pared by a cast of volunteers under the all tuned organisational skills of Sharon McGrath – thank you one and all. Whilst planning is well underway for next year’s event, the committee is well aware that the major factor that came out of our de-brief meetings for 2016 was the huge growth in the overall event. Whilst we applaud the growth, we certainly understand that to be sustainable for the future we will need to recruit more volunteers. The committee is currently reviewing the specific areas of need for these volunteers and anticipate rolling out a ‘Volunteer Drive’ in the forthcoming months. To my amazing committee – congratulations to each and every one of you for anoth-er incredible year. Thank you for the laughter and fun along the way, for taking up the challenges and pulling together as a team ………..thank you one and all for your unbelievable dedication and commitment to our event and the community. Finally, I would like to thank the families of our volunteers who allow them to give of their time freely, to my husband, Owen and my children who support me and allow me to give back to the community and do whatever I ask of them as well. Yours sincerely, Karen Stephens President Casterton Kelpie Association

The Twentieth Annual Casterton Working Dog Auction was conducted at Island Park, on Sunday the 12th June 2016. After a very wet week prior, the weather was kind and the day was cool but pleasant. Clark Rubber is the major sponsor of the auction. Members of the RMA Network of Independent Livestock and Property Agents also sponsored and facilitated the sale. The skilled Auctioneers, James Tierney and Bernie Grant, and ‘spotters’ of RMA did a wonderful job running a good, keen and fast paced auction. The demonstrations of dogs proceeded well and the fit, young sheep, kindly loaned by the Northcott family from Merino, were compliant, but just tested the dogs enough to demonstrate their skills. Good sheep are an essential requirement for this event and we thank the Northcott’s very much for al-lowing us to use them. At Auction time an excellent catalogue of dogs was presented for sale and proof of this was in the bidding, with the first dog offered making $7,000. The sale progressed rapidly with very good prices being received for the dogs on offer. The 28 trained dogs sold averaged $5,177. The prices were indicative of the standard of dogs available and the current buoyant live-stock prices which put confidence into the industry. It was very rewarding to see the smiles on the faces of our vendors, many of whom have brought dogs for sale to support our auction for some time. A total of 51 dogs and pups were sold for an average of $3,763. The high-est priced dog was sold by Andrew Kennedy from Nyngan in NSW, who has achieved close to the top price in previous years. Burgess, a trained male kelpie, black and tan, aged 1year 7mths sold for $10,000 and went to Trafalgar, Vic. This year we passed the $2 million dollar mark in total worth of dogs sold through the Casterton auction, over twenty years. What an outstanding achievement for all involved!

ANNUAL REPORT 2015-16
The Twentieth Anniversary was a great cause for celebration for all in-
volved, and several of the original founders of the Auction event were able
to participate in the official “cutting” of the special Anniversary cake. Sharon
McGrath once again supervised the provision of food for the multitude of
visitors present on Auction day. Sharon also oversees the supply of food for
our volunteers prior to, and over, the entire weekend. She is supported in
this by many volunteers who cook and serve the food and they all deserve
special thanks for their efforts.
I would like to thank the other members of the Auction Committee and the CKA for their efforts and all the volunteers who willingly support us in pre-senting this event for the benefit of the entire community. This year we were also assisted by several people from afar; friends of the committee, who regularly attend the event and kindly offered their knowledge, time and energy to help with yard construction and secretarial tasks . The list of infrastructure used over the Auction is huge. All this equipment is loaned by people in the immediate district. Several even deliver it to the auction site. It would be impossible to hire it. I would also like to especially thank the livestock truck drivers who battle wintry conditions, including the likelihood of getting bogged and have the sheep delivered before time and take them home again after the event. With animal welfare paramount the sheep spend as little time as possible away from their familiar surround-ings. The commitment shown by our volunteers, some participating over many years, demonstrates their generosity, and they can all be proud of this achievement. The Auction committee is only part what it takes to run this event. It is deservedly known far and wide as Australia’s Premier Working Dog Auction and it belongs to the volunteers and the Casterton and District community. Nancy Withers Chairperson Casterton Working Dog Auction Committee.

ANNUAL REPORT 2015-16
After 12 months of planning we awoke to a perfect June day the main street came alive with volunteer’s systematically moving infrastructure about whilst the Lion’s Club ran the annual Poet’s Breakfast. Things moved into top gear when with the start of the spectacular Street Pa-rade – with an array of vivid colours, each float was certainly unique and were displayed with great pride by each entrant with many hours of careful design and construction evident for all to see. The Town Hall steps were abuzz with entrants confirming their entries for the different events and I thank the volunteers that handle the queries and the on-line booking system will be further refined for next year, as it was positively received by entrants. The novelty events have grown in popularity year after year and are a great crowd pleaser – the committee will continue to refine this area of the festival to improve the experience for visitors for next year. Of course the word on every one lips was the amazing height which was achieved at the Kelpie High Jump with a new World Record of a whopping 2.951m by Bailey owned by Tegan Eagle – the media following the event has been exceptional and a great bonus for the event. Keeping the event FREE for families and all visitors is a priority for the Kelpie Association but with-out the amazing support from our sponsors it would not be possible to hold the event, so a huge thank you to all of our sponsors and we look forward to your support again next year. I would personally like to sincerely thank each event coordinator and to Courtney for her role as Secretary, you all did an amazing job and I am sincerely grateful to you all – thank you. Yours truly,

Two years ago we lost one of our most precious volunteers John "Cheify" McGrath. An award has been struck to recognise the significant contribution John made to the success and volunteering patronage of the Kelpie Muster over many years. John was a unique individual who was able to bring out the best in everyone, gal-vanise volunteer effort and pride, harmonise community volunteers whilst maintain-ing a productive, rewarding and enjoyable experience for all. John was reliable, tireless, driven and held high expectations for our event and the quality of each and every activity or product that built and maintained our reputa-tion and quality of what the event was able to deliver and have Casterton recog-nised on the regional, state, national and international agendas as ‘Birthplace of the Kelpie and Home of the Australian Kelpie Muster’. These results help us with planning for the future Australian Kelpie Musters. Results have shown
the Muster continues to attract new people to the event of all ages from all over Australia. These
results help us plan for the future Musters we hold. The age demographic is wide ranging which is a
great result that shows the Muster attracts people of all ages. Overall we have achieved a great re-
sult in providing the right entertainment to the public visiting and we are aware of the areas we need
to improve upon. The demographics show our sponsors receive a wide coverage of ‘soft’ promotion.
