Accuracy breeds certainty. The IGENITY® profile for Angus is helping bring certainty to Angus breeding. It gives breeders the information they need to make more confident and informed decisions.

Available exclusively through the American Angus Association, this DNA profile provides a comprehensive picture of key economically important traits that can help improve the performance of your herd. And, with more accurate Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs), you can take some of the risk out of selecting young animals. It’s a powerful tool to move your operation forward.

WOW!! Where

has the summer gone? I knowhere it reminded us it was sum-mer with 3 weeks of very hotand humid conditions. I hopeeveryone has had a good one asit is getting close to fall. I al-ways look forward to fall as thespring calves are gettingweaned it’s exciting to see theirprogress. Most of Nebraska hadbountiful rains in the springthat made for good grass in thepastures. We have been fortu-nate in Nebraska compared toour neighboring states to thesouth. This time of the year is excit-ing for the association with theState Fair, Husker Harvest Daysand the State tour. The StateFair was well attended in 2010and hopefully will be again thisyear. In visiting with membersand friends, the move to GrandIsland has been good withmany excited to go back. Thisyear the Association will besponsoring an Exhibitor Social. We hope to get ideas from ex-hibitors on how we can betterbenefit our exhibitors alongwith just visiting. Long time as-sociation member, Lowell Min-ert, who is on the State FairBoard, will be in attendance toanswer questions regarding thefair. Husker Harvest Days is agreat way to advertise yourAngus operation. In visitingwith Suzy there were still somepens available. Plans for theAngus tour are well underway.

I hope to see many of you thereas it looks to be a great tour ofSouthwest Nebraska. In November the AmericanAngus Association holds its an-nual meeting in Louisville,Kentucky. Arlen Sawyer will beup for re-election. Arlen hasrepresented Nebraska well, while being on the board and Iencourage all the Nebraska del-egates and alternates to attendthe annual meeting to get Arlenre-elected. If any of the electeddelegates are unable to attendlet Suzy know as we want tohave a full delegation inLouisville. The annual associationmeeting and banquet will againbe held in Kearney. There wewill be announcing the Pro-ducer of the Year and PioneerAward winners, along withhaving the Juniors semen auc-tion. The livestock industry isstill going strong even with allthe turmoil in the stock market.Angus genetics are still instrong demand and will con-tinue to be, especially here inNebraska where we knowGOOD BEEF and how to raiseit. I hope to visit with many ofyou at our upcoming events. As always if you having anyquestions, concerns or ideas re-garding the association feel freeto contact myself, Suzy or anyof the board members. See ya down the road! Lori Wagner

Dear Angus Friends,

American Angus Board UpdateAmerican Angus Board UpdateBy: Arlen Sawyer, AAA Board Member

WantedThe Nebraska Angus News is in searchof photos from around Nebraska fromour fellow Angus Breeders! We wouldlove to see them and publish some inour magazine and maybe on the Cover!

If you have a picture of your place oryour Angus herd please send to:[email protected]

Photos must be high resolution (300dpi or better) and at least 8 inches wide.

It looks like all Nebraskafarmers and ranchers shouldbe enjoying a good summer.

The moisture situation has beena gift compared to what oursouthern beef producing statesare enduring. Even though itsbeen little tougher getting hayup and a few things, we stillhave a lot for which we shouldbe grateful. Our June board meeting washeld at the Certified Angus Beefheadquarters in Wooster, Ohioand we continued to discussand move forward with ourlong-range planning. The on-line input received from mem-bers was documented andconsidered seriously through-out our meeting, so for those ofyou that completed the surveythank-you very much! I had the pleasure of attend-ing the National Junior AngusShow in Pennsylvania in July. Iwant to congratulate our Ne-braska juniors and their parentsfor a tremendous representationof Nebraska Angus. There isnever a question in my mindthat whatever support needsto be given to the junior associa-tion is well worth the invest-

ment to continually keep theprogram moving forward. I can't stress enought thatthe input that the board re-ceives from members is alwaysgiven separate and serious con-sideration. If anyone ever has asuggestion concerning any ofthe activities or programs of theAmerican Angus Association, please convey those thoughts tome or one of the associationstaff members. Becky and I are looking for-ward to attending the Angusshow at the Nebraska State Fairand look forward to visitingwith everyone. Good luck withfall weaning and harvest! Sincerely, Arlen J. Sawyer

BEAR MOUNTAIN ANGUS

Brian & Tiffany Stoller,

Reagan & McKinley

Bear Mountain Angus began as a4-H project for Brian and Scott Stollerin 1985 in the foothills of California, inthe small town of Angels Camp withthe purchase of two Angus heifersfrom Thomas Angus Ranch in Baker,Oregon. Throughout the next 10years, Brian and Scott showed andraised Angus cattle. By 1995, theranch was up to 100 mother cows. When Brian went to college at FresnoState, the herd was dispersed. In 2001,Gary, Davy, and Brian decided to relo-cate Bear Mountain Angus to Melba,Idaho with the purchase of FooteAcres Angus ranch and herd. The herdgrew to approximately 500 Angusmother cows. In April of 2008, BearMountain Angus had a complete andtotal opportunity sale to downsize theherd for their next move. As of May,2008 Bear Mountain Angus calls Pal-isade, Nebraska home. Currently we are running approxi-mately 280 Angus and 20 Charolaismother cows. About 2/3 of the cowscalve in the spring and 1/3 calve inthe fall. Eighty of these cows are usedas recips of which all but 8 are regis-tered. We use embryo transfer and ar-tificial insemination to perpetuate ourvery best genetics. Our two main herd sires who havebeen used nationwide are Bear MtnFreight Train 350L, a ConnealyFreightliner son, and Bear MtnOwyhee 5012 (pronounced o-y-he), aRtio 1I2 son. We are currently using 3

sons of Owyhee, including Bear MtnRenegade 9045, Bear Mtn Octane 7122and Bear Mtn King Owyhee 9047.Other herd sires include Connealy De-pendable 7446, a Pendelton son, Con-nealy Toby 865B(CAF), a Tobin sonwho is a full brother to Sullivan,Whitestone Contendor who is a FinalAnswer son and Sand Dune Com-plete, who is a Complete son. OtherAI sires we are currently using areVin-Mar O’Reilly Factor, VAR Rocky80029, Pine Ridge Hammer, WoodhillMainline, GDAR Game Day, and Con-nealy Timeline. Our slogan is “Focusing on Qual-ity with Performance”. We strive toproduce cattle that have good per-formance on the scale and on the railand are phenotypically pleasing to theeye. We want our cattle to be soundstructured, good footed, easy fleshing, good uddered and good mothers. Wedon’t chase fads or breed extremes; wejust breed for cattle that we think willwork for both us and our customers. We have 2 production sales eachyear. Our bull sale is held the lastThursday in February where we sellapproximately 130 Angus and Charo-lais bulls. The bull sale consists of twoyear olds, coming twos (18 month oldfall borns) and yearlings. The bullsare developed on an all forage diet.Instead of grain, the bulls are fed amix of soybean hulls, alfalfa, cane hay,mix 30, distillers, and a mineral de-signed specifically for the ration. Theroughage diet allows the cattle togrow and gain well, but is designed tobe less harsh than grain so they transi-tion to pasture easier, have fewer feetand leg problems, and better repro-ductive performance. Our fall female production sale isthe third Saturday in November. Weoffer donors & donor prospects, showheifers which are halter broke andready to go to a show, bred heifers, and proven cows. The show heiferswe sell are our best heifer calves fromthat year. These heifers should notonly be competitive in the show ringbut also make great cows. We do thisto help out the next generation ofAngus breeders. Brian got the Angusbug by showing heifers and havingmany influential people help himthroughout showing. We hope to giveback to the next generation by doing

the same. Gary and Davy Stoller (Brian’sparents) have turned everything overto Brian and his wife Tiffany sincemoving to Nebraska. We have 2daughters, Reagan Skow (11 years old)and Mckinley Stoller (9 months old).Along with breeding Angus andCharolais cattle we are certified ultra-sound technicians and Tiffany teachesonline animal science classes at Mid-Plains Community College and Treas-ure Valley Community College. Brianalso works a few sales for LiveAuc-tions.TV. Gary and Davy say they areretired however Gary still helps outwhen he can. We look forward to see-ing you on the Nebraska Angus tourSeptember 22nd.

Chrisman Family - Josh,, Rick,, Gayle,

Kelli and Travis Chrisman

This family cattle operation con-sists of two separate herds. Travis andKelli manage the fall calving herd nearWauneta, while Travis’ parents Rickand Gayle and his brother Josh takecare of a spring calving herd near Mc-Cool Junction. Currently the opera-tion consists of about 120 cows, ofwhich approximately 75% would beregistered Angus. The family has run commercialcattle since Rick and Gayle were mar-ried in 1978, but only recently havethey began the conversion to regis-tered Angus. In 2004 they partneredwith Broken Bar M Angus, Jeremy andGail Martin of Hershey to purchaseCM Dixie Erica 796C. An 11 year oldcow at the time, she was considered bymany to be one of the best Travelerdaughters ever produced. She hasprovided a solid foundation of daugh-ters and herd bulls to move theirbreeding program forward.

Due to necessity, their breedingphilosophy is anchored on simplicity.Rick and Gayle grow corn and soy-beans; Josh works in agronomy salesfor United Farmers Coop in York;Travis and Kelli own and operateChrisman Cattle Services which mar-kets ABS semen and A.I.’s over 10,000head per year in addition to marketing2500 calves for customers; Kelli doesadvertising design, web design andbull sale catalogs for a growing clientlist in addition to being a professionaljumper horse trainer. With their busyschedules the cattle must work forthem or find a new home. They have not changed how theymanage their cattle since adding theregistered Angus. It is important thatthe cattle are managed in as tough, ortougher than commercial operations inthe area. While most of the industry isfocused on measuring and selectingon high concentrate diets, the Chris-man’s prefer selection decisions to bemade when the cattle are on lowerquality forage and forced to work for aliving. If they can do it there, they cando it anywhere, but it doesn’t always

work the otherway around.

From the be-ginning theirfocus has been toproduce mater-nally efficientmomma cows. With the highprice of feed, fuel, labor andreplacements it isclear to them thatmaternally effi-cient is definedas a cow that canutilize low qual-ity forage, raise aheavy andhealthy calf anddo it on her ownwell into herteens. Their ge-netic base ismostly Emula-tion bloodlinesacquired fromSinclair CattleCo. and devel-oped in a realworld environ-

ment at the old N Bar Ranch in GrassRange, MT. To this base they areadding some Rito and Traveler bloodand are currently sampling geneticsfrom Cole Creek Angus in Joliet, MT.Today, herd bulls in use include C F CGenesis 8X1, C F C First Step 9V1, Sin-clair Rito Promise 0R12 and ColeCreek Full Bore 730. All of these bullshave dams or grand dams with strongproduction into their teens or even 20years old in the case of the Promisebull. Currently they market a few bullsprivate treaty with Broken Bar MAngus each spring. Semen, embryosand females are also available for saleat most times. Future goals of the op-eration are to expand their numbersand move towards closing the herdand using mostly their own homeraised herd sires with limited outsidegenetics unless they come from thesame proven base. The Chrisman’s feel very fortunateand humbled to be invited to displayon the tour considering their shorttime in the business. They look for-ward to fellowship with the other

breeders that have put in the years ofhard work that has made this breed sogreat.

STOP 1WINDMILL ANGUS

Celebrates 60+ Years of Angus Cattle!

Alex and Joan Peterson

Windmill Angus Ranch was pur-chased in 1959 by Rich and Joan Peter-son. In the late 1800’s it was known asthe Cottonwood Ranch and had a rep-utation as one of the premier Regis-tered Hereford ranches in the tri-statearea. Rich, Joan and Rich’s fatherGeorge Peterson had been raising Reg-istered Angus in the Chappell, Ne-braska area before purchasing theCottonwood Ranch. The named theranch Windmill Ranch after the designof their brand. The brand is wellknown around the country now asRegistered Stock has been sold to al-most every state. Rich and Joan had four children;Eric, Ellen, George and Alex. Eric waslost in a farm accident in 1976. Ellenand her husband Gene and their twoboys Jake and Ethan own afarm/ranch in the panhandle of Ne-braska. George and his wife Carol andtheir two children Meg and Mark owna ranch that borders Windmill Ranch.Other people essential to the operationinclude Luis Cardoza – herd manage-ment and Abby Vermillion – Secretary. Sixty years of raisinggreat Angus cattle and making friendsnationwide has been a great way tomake a living. Although Rich passedaway in 2000, Joan is an active partnerin Windmill Ranch and continues tohelp with everyday decisions. Currently Alex and Joan run 600mother cows and about 50 commercialcows. Alex quips that the size of hisoperation is more fence than he canget around in a year. This ground isalso home to corn, wheat and alfalfacrops. Molly isa first year student at Hastings Collegethis fall, and youngest daughter Sarahis beginning her junior year at HayesCenter Schools. All have been fully in-volved over the years. The operation is home to over 600registered and commercial cows. In1988 the focus changed from strictlycommercial Angus to a purebred reg-istered operation. The goal and focusfor the program has always been onmaternal first, - followed by perform-ance testing and carcass evaluation. The cowherd is summered on nativegrass, and grazes cornstalks in thewinter period. The bulls were mer-chandised private treaty, through theWestern NE Bull Test and SouthwestNE Association Sale until 1999. In theyear 2000 they held their inauguralPerformance Tested - Carcass Evalu-ated Bull Sale which is always on thefourth Friday of January. The 2012Bull Sale will be on January 27, 2012. The bulls are all developed inlarge sandy pens on the ranch. The ra-tion has always been a high protein ra-tion of feedstuffs grown on the outfitconsisting of alfalfa, grass hay, cornsilage, corn, oats and liquid supple-ment. Mill Bar Angus is truly a familyoperation. A large array of irrigatedand dryland crops are produced here including corn, alfalfa, soybeans, wheat, oats and a wide variety ofgrazing crops. We purchase bothsteers and heifers from bull customersand they run out on cornstalks andother crops in the fall. A total of 12 Bull Sales have beenheld, Mick and Marlene and their fam-ily is very appreciative of the supportof our customers, if not for them ourbusiness would not be able to succeedand for that we say “Thank You”!Mick and Marlene have always feltthat they have one of the best andmost astute set of commercial bull cus-tomers in the world.

PETTERA ANGUS Pettera Angus is located Northeastof McCook, NE in the beautiful South-western part of the state. Randy andDesree Pettera grew up around com-mercial cattle but never had the op-portunity to become involved with4-H. This is one opportunity theywanted to provide to their children. In 1980 they purchased registeredAngus heifers for their son’s first 4-Hproject. Son Chad, and his wife Erin, livein Wichita Kansas with their childrenClayton and Tyler. Chad is a Chief Fi-nancial Officer for the Workforce Al-liance of South Central Kansas. SonBryan lives in Lincoln, NE and worksas a Lineman for T & H Powerline outof Dewey, OK. Chad and Bryan were involved inthe 4-H program through high school. Now, Randy & Desree’s grandsonshave been able to spend time withthem in the summer months, showingcattle in the 4-H program. In 2011,their youngest grandson participatedfor the first time as a “PeeWee” mem-

ber. They feel 4-H is a great way tobuild a child’s self-esteem and instillin them a sense of responsibility. The Pettera’s registered herd pro-gressed from that first 4-H project.Utilizing the AHIR program throughthe American Angus Association theyworked to improve the herd. Al-though they have contemplated be-coming a strictly commercial cattleoperation many times, their love forthe breeding livestock business wasstrong. They are currently in their31st year of the purebred business. With the huge increases in feedcosts, Randy and Desree have beentraveling extensively to locate blood-lines that are easy-fleshing, a charac-teristic Angus cattle are well knownfor. They still have a few of the largerframed cattle available, but are gettingmore requests for the moderateframed, easy fleshing cattle. They feelthat the chasing of certain carcasstraits has resulted in less fleshing andhigher finishing weights, with less fer-tility. Angus cattle have always beenknown for excellent carcass traits andthey don’t carry this to extremes.Multiple Trait selection is very impor-

tant in their Angus operation. The Pettera’s have purchased a fe-male from the famous Donna cowfamily from Montana. Her first calf, out of BC Emblazon, was born last falland will be on display. The dam ofthis female has generated more than$140,000 in progeny sales. She de-scends from the second generationPathfinder Dam Brooks Donna 321who is the result of mating PathfinderSire DHD Traveler 6807 with thePathfinder dam that has the distinc-tion of being a full sister to thePathfinder Sire AAR New Trend. They feel this bloodline excels in fertil-ity, longevity and function. They will also have a Rito Revolve0R5 cow that is a granddaughter of RR Rito 707 on display. R R Rito 707was a cornerstone Pathfinder Sire, from Dale Davis’s herd in Montana, born 43 years ago. He remains thebreed’s top proven performance sirefor his generation and well beyondwith a Weaning Weight EPD nearly 40pounds greater than the estimated av-erage of his birth year and YearlingWeight EPD nearly 70 pounds greater. His influence is a relevant factor in the

Display byFRONTIER ANGUS FARMS Frontier Angus Farm dates back to1952, when Twila purchased her firstregistered angus cow, from Haroldand Nadine Deviny with hard earnedschool teacher wages. Jim Johnson and Twila Max met atthe Frontier Co.Fair in 1954. Jim had

just returned homefrom the Air Forceand Twila wasabout to return tocollege to renewher teaching cer-tificate. They weremarried June 26th1955. At that timeJim had a smallherd of Herefordcattle and Twila'sAngus herd wasmultiplying. Which would it

be Angus or Here-fords??? SinceTwila refused tosell her Angus, theHerefords weresold and moreAngus were pur-chased, which be-came thefoundation of theirherd. Since thattime they havebuilt the herd intowhat it is today, byusing good breed-ing stock. At the time they lived just South-

west of Stockville, NE, the county seatof Frontier County, and since they metat the Frontier County Fair, it seemedonly fitting that they name their farmFrontier Angus Farm. In addition to raising cattle, theyraise corn, sorghum, & wheat on theirfarm. They also raised 3 boys: Paul,Bill & Rod who are all grown andhave families of their own. The boyswere very active in working with thecattle and showed them in 4-H. Weare very proud of our boys as well asour cattle. Paul has a farm & ranchbusiness of his own and takes care ofthe purebred herd and farms ourland. Bill is an engineer for Hallibur-ton Oil at Edmund, Oklahoma andRod is a computer Technician for Lan-caster County and the City ofLincoln. They have 8 grandchildrenand 1 great grandchild. Their first two bulls were sold atthe Heart of Nebraska Sale at BrokenBow. We sold bulls for several yearsat the Southwest NE Sale in McCook. We had production sales in conjunc-tion with Twila's Dad, Jacob and

brother, Alva Max in McCook andCambridge, NE. For 3 years we heldour own sale at the Curtis sale barn.

Jim and Twila Johnson

In 1979 we put up a sale barn andhad sales at home. As it got more ex-pensive and they got older and werenot able to halter break all the animals, they started selling private treatywhich has worked out real well forthem. They usually keep around 20 ofthe best bulls to sell and 20 heifers forreplacements. The rest are put in thefeed lot. Through their A-I programthey are able to offer the best and a va-riety of easy calving bloodlines fortheir repeat customers.

The entire herd is enrolled inAHIR and utilizes the Angus Associa-tion’s A.I.M. program. Bothe the bulland heifers are ultrasounded and ge-nomic data will be used. Strict cullingpractices are adhered to ensure year-ling bulls that are sought after and re-

placement females that are backed byseveral generations of predictable ge-netics in their pedigree. Fertility is a must to be held inherd. Only the top end of the calvesare kept after ultrasound numberscome back. Docility and dispositionhas been a major emphasis in the herdand frame size has been kept in check. The bulls are marketed the thirdweek in March every year at the Ogal-lala Livestock Auction along with afew select yearling heifers. Cow num-bers are low compared to many regis-tered herds but quality and valuebased is our main emphasis. We neverloose sight that pounds cross the scalehelps pay the bills. A.I. is utilized with superior cleanup bulls. EPD’s along with visual ap-praisal are combined to help progresstowards an easy fleshing, sound andfunctional calf. If a mother cow is notpaying her way, she is gone. All of Tom & Shawn’s cowherdbloodlines can be traced to Joe Huck-feldt breeding in Gordon, Nebraska.Shawn & Michelle along with theirsons, Brent, Nick and Tyler and theirdaughter Meghan, were new to theregistered Angusbusiness ten yearsago and are nowbenefiting fromusing superiorAngus genetics.Tom and his wifeSara, have twodaughters Emilyand Julianne.Chance Kramerfrom Holyoke,Colorado hasjoined the familyand Chance andJulianne will wel-come the newestmember to theHuckfeldt-Turneroperation in No-vember. employee Jon Alexander. Other fam-ily members include: Matt, Todd &Cheryl Boss; Chris & Erin Dudden andtheir Grandchildren: Makenna, Madi-son & Trevor Boss & Cooper Dudden. The Boss family farms 2,200 acres onwhich they raise corn, soybeans, al-falfa hay, grass hay, wheat and rye andof course the cow herd. The herdnumbers over 100 registered femalesand 150 non – registered cows. Theoperation is located between Chap-pell, Nebraska and Julesburg, Col-orado just off of Hwy 385. Thebusiness is in its 32nd year of opera-tion.

The cow herd has utilized Ohldebloodlines in the crossbred programfrom the beginning. Recently theyhave introduced DUFF Genetics, andhave found their customers’ needs re-quired the move to Purebred Anguscattle. With the Ohlde and Duff basisin the cowherd, the family felt thatthey needed to add some powerfuloutcross genetics, including numerousdonor quality females and their newherd sire “PROWLER”. These herdadditions will be on display at theirstop on this year’s tour. The Boss fam-ily utilizes A.I., embryo transplant andnatural service in their breeding pro-gram. All five of the Boss children hadthe desire to show cattle and were suc-cessfully involved in raising andshowing cattle on the county, state andnational levels. They won the OhioState Fair Jr Steer Show in 1995 withhome raised cattle and won the NorthAmerican Livestock Exposition inLouisville, KY, in 1988. The familymoved from Ohio to Nebraska in 1997and they continued their winningways by showing successfully at Kear-ney at the Cattlemen’s Classic - hav-ing Supreme Champion (bull orfemale) Bull, in 1999. They also havebeen successful in the yards at the Na-tional Western Stock Show in Denver. Since leaving the show ring, the opera-tion has continued that success by fo-cusing on producing functional, productive cattle with eye appeal; thatare beneficial to their customers andthe Angus breed. Current methods ofmarketing the cattle include privatetreaty sales and their online bull saleheld in March. They have a goal ofmarketing their breeding stock in an

annual production sale. In the short term there are dispers-ing their crossbred and A+ cattle, moving completely to a registeredAngus operation. The Boss family is afamily operation, dedicated to produc-ing functional, all-around breedingstock that will work in all sectors ofthe industry. They are proud to wel-come the Nebraska Angus Tour totheir operation in Southwest Ne-braska.

T 4 Annual Ranch Tour

Steve and Jeanette Dean are the pro-prietors of T 4 Livestock, located be-tween Chappell and Oshkosh,Nebraska. T 4 has been in existencesince 1997. Their operation is home to90 registered cows and 60 commercialfemales, they also run approximately,80 head of outside/client cattlethroughout the year, and in the spring, custom calve out heifers. Steve’s cattle experience began 40years ago on a registered Hereford op-eration. This business took him toNew Mexico where he met Jeanette.Thirty years ago they began workingfor a large yearling operation which isheadquarted in Texas. They movedtwice a year with the cattle fromTexas, Wyoming, Nebraska, and NewMexico. In 1995, they began working forthe Carlson Ranch, operation atLodgepole. The Carlson ranch ran 500commercial Angus cows. The Deansused different Angus bloodlines onthe herd. Utilizing information gath-ered from these matings, they begandeveloping their registered Angusherd. The Deans moved to their pres-ent location in 2005 when the Carl-son’s retired and sold their ranch.

The cows are run on 2,500 acres ofpasture during the summer monthsand run on constalks in the winter.

Steve also operates T 4 Trucking, doing long distance, livestock Haul-ing. The Dean operation is multi-breed, utilizing Simmental cattle aswell as Angus. Angus bloodlines in-clude New Design 1407, OCC Legend6I6L, VDAR Legend 1281, GardenPrime Time and Sitz Alliance 6595,and other prominent bloodlines. Sim-mental bloodlines consist of SANDRanch Hand, ACC1 Hustler, DreamOn and Hooks Shear Force. Bulls aremarketed in March at ther Annual BullSale held at the Ranch. Females arecurrently sold by private treaty andthey also sell club calves every year. The goals of their operation focuson raising balanced cattle that aremoderate framed, loaded with muscleand possess strong maternal traits. Two years ago they added the Sim-mental/Angus mix to their businessafter seeing how well these cattle per-form in the feedlots. Like many pro-ducers their number one objective is toraise that one bull that would becoman industry changer. Steve andJeanette, their family and friends wel-come the Nebraska Angus Tour totheir little piece of heaven.

Cattle Company, LLC in 1997 whenthey graduated from the University ofNebraska-Lincoln. Their first cowswere purchased from Vance and Con-nie Uden at TC Ranch. Initially, thebusiness was located near Gibbon, Ne-braska where they were raised on thefamily farm and ranch. Their opera-tion grew to a point of needing to ex-pand. The present location nearLodgepole was purchased in 2004. Home to 1,800 cows, the operationis comprised of only registered fe-males. The Widdowson’s own around22,000 acres which is comprised of2,000 acres of farm ground whichraises corn, alfalfa, wheat and feed. The remaining 20,000 owned acres isgrassland. They also lease 6,000 acresof pasture land. Obviously, an operation of thisscale must rely on loyal employees. Inthis case they are Mike Cavalli/Opera-tion Manager, Clint Snell/Cow Herd,Rich Tagemeyer/Farming Operationand Ailene McAullife/Records andTechnology. The Sandpoint breeding programconsists of two calving herds – aspring herd with 60% of the herd calv-

ing during this period and the remain-der 40% calving in the fall. Every cowhas at least one opportunity to A.I’d.per breeding season and then turnedout with herd sires. They also utilizean extensive Embryo Transfer (ET)program. Here they flush their donorcows and implant the embryos intotheir own registered recipient cows.Their Arthur, Nebraska ranch is run asa “Weaned Calf ET Program”. Theyalso transfer other breeder’s embryosinto their cows and provide them witha weaned calf the next fall. The first week of March is the An-nual Sandpoint Bull Sale. March 7,2012 will be their 11th annual produc-tion sale. Approximately 180-200 bullsare marketing during the sale. Theyalso sell another 200 bulls a year pri-vately, for a total of 400 bulls sold an-nually. They also host an annualFemale Sale known as the “Power ofthe Point” sale. Their 9th annual fe-male sale will be on Monday, Novem-ber 7, 2011. This year the female salewill be Mature Cow dispersal – sellingall of their 6, 7 and 8 year old cows. This female sale will also have springand fall calving pairs. Females are

also marketed private treaty through-out the year.

One of the main objectives thatkeep John and Laurie motivated is toproduce elite Angus genetics that willhelp their commercial customers in-crease their profitability. They try toprovide quality genetics in a volumewith customer service that will exceedtheir customer’s expectations. Theyrealize that there are many types andkinds of cattle, and they strive to haveenough genetic difference for the vari-ous geographic and managementpractices that face today’s cattle indus-try. The most important aim of Sand-point Cattle Co. as an operation is thecare and management of their landand cattle so they can pass it to thenext generation in better shape thanthey received it. It is with this aspira-tion in mind, that John, Laurie, theirfamily and employees welcome theNebraska Angus Tour to their stop onthe 2011 Nebraska Angus Tour.
