Our Association's busy Fallschedule is nearly at anend. September found us

Upcoming on December10th, will be our Annual Meetingand Banquet in Kearney at theHoliday Inn. We have Dr. MattSpangler set to talk to us about en-hanced DNA tests, what they cantell us about our breeding pro-grams and which ones (if any) weneed to run in on our cattle. TrentLoos will be our featured speakerat our banquet. It should be agreat day and evening. And don'tforget we'll have our NebraskaProducer of the Year and PioneerAward winner presentations alsoduring the banquet. Check out theschedule on page 5. One of the biggest changes forthe coming year is a decrease, yesthat's right a decrease in advertis-ing rates for our members. It isn'toften these days that you hearabout prices going down for anygoods or services we use in ourbusiness and I am excited to pres-ent the new advertising prices onpage 2. Accuracy breeds certainty. The IGENITY® profile for Angus is helping bring certainty to Angus breeding. It gives breeders the information they need to make more confident and informed decisions.

Available exclusively through the American Angus Association, this DNA profile provides a comprehensive picture of key economically important traits that can help improve the performance of your herd. And, with more accurate Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs), you can take some of the risk out of selecting young animals. It’s a powerful tool to move your operation forward.

Dear Angus Friends,

American Angus Board UpdateAmerican Angus Board UpdateBy: Arlen Sawyer, AAA Board Member

Iwould like to thank the Ne-braska Angus Associationboard of directors and its mem-

bers for their unanimous endorse-ment of my re-election to theAmerican Angus Associationboard of directors. The Ne-braskans that have previouslyserved on this board have set ahigh standard of excellence and Iwant to thank them for their out-standing service!

The experience of these pastthree years on this board havemade it even more evident to mewhat makes our breed and our as-sociation the envy of the rest of thepurebred industry. It is you, themembership. The AmericanAngus Association is not just abrick building in St. Joseph, Mis-souri. The American Angus Asso-ciation is 30,000 junior and regularmembers across this nation. It isthis great membership that has al-ways been willing to improve andadvance this breed of cattle, oftenwhen the rest of the beef industryis going in a different direction.

I am reminded of an observa-tion by our friend, Dave Nicholswhen he said that in 1492 most ofthe people in the world believedthat the earth was flat. Christo-pher Columbus didn't argue withthem or try to convince them thatthe earth was round, he just goton a boat. That is what our mem-bers have been willing to do forseveral decades and continue to doso. For more than 75 years thisbreed took a back seat to white-faced cattle, and in the mid-1970'sto the continental breeds. With theperseverance of our membershiplook at the number of Angus bullsused today!

Brent Eichar of Certified AngusBeef used a quote of Henry Ford'sonce in a presentation that I like. After Henry Ford invented theModel T he said, "You cannotmerely rely on what your cus-tomers tell you they want. If I hadasked people what they wanted, they probably would have said a

faster horse." When the popularbelief of the time was to reduce thestandards for beef quality, ourmembership forged forward witha branded beef program that inthis last fiscal year sold over 800million pounds of Certified AngusBeef.

For over 50 years our member-ship has worked at developing themost envied database and reliableperformance information in thebeef industry. We are now usinggenomic technology to reach evengreater accuracy in breedingAngus cattle. All this could nothave been accomplished withoutthe dedication of a talented staff inall of our association entities, cou-pled with the insight and willing-ness of this membership to use thetechnology. An 'ol boy back homealways says that in America one isonly limited by two things....imag-ination and ambition. I don't thinkthere has ever been a shortage oftraits in Angus breeders.

We have a lot to look forwardto in this industry. Cattle pricesare at all time highs. The wholebeef industry is benefiting fromour determination in breeding cat-tle that meet CAB standards. Thishas generated a higher qualityend-product that I believe is thedriving force increasing consumerdemand. We are being rewardedfor these efforts as the choice-selectspread , been steadily increasingthis fall currently exceeding $18.00.The success of today's beef indus-try is focused on quality!

J. Paul Getty was once askedfor his formula to success...riseearly, work hard and it doesn'thurt to strike oil. Since we can't al-ways rely on luck, we have tohope that our association will con-tinue to provide members with thetechnology and tools to helpachieve even greater heights whilegrooming the next generation tobuild on our success.

It has been a honor for me toserve on your national board of di-rectors these past three years. I

Ihope that you all are enjoy-ing this fall weather and har-vest season as much as I am!

I’m sure all of you juniors aregetting excited for the begin-ning of the upcoming show sea-son and the time has come topick out some projects for nextyear. As many of you know, there is more to the NationalJunior Angus Show than justthe livestock exhibits. There arealso contests for public speak-ing, photography, and postersfor individuals to compete in sokeep that in mind as we headinto the new year. Some of theprojects like the photographyand posters do not require youto actually attend the show.Junior Nationals always seemsto sneak up on you and it’ssometimes difficult to quicklystart and finish some of thoseindividual projects the week be-fore (or day before in somecases) the due date! It’s nevertoo early to start thinking aboutthose projects!

Congratulations to everyonethat was successful at the Ne-braska State Fair! There were alot of familiar Angus faces inthe Cattle Barn and it was greatto catch up with friends that weonly get to see at the showsthroughout the year! We had agreat turn out at our State Fairmeeting in September.
