The cranes in the wharf run interminably with rumbling sounds

and workers with brown skin color, like non-fatigued ants, are

working hard and going back and forth. Liao-Luo wharf is the gate

of importing and exporting goods in Kinmen; all without exception

including daily commodities, machines, etc. are distributed to every

corner in Kinmen through Liao-Luo wharf. The items sold by venders

called “little bee” are all sent to Kinmen in the same way; in other

words, it is not exaggerating to say that Liao-Luo is the heart of

Kinmen from the aspect of supplying resources. It is more than 11

months since the day I arrived at Liao-Luo Inspection Offi ce. I found

that the seasons in Kinmen seem to be in summer and winter as

spring and autumn mainly come on the day of Spring Equinox and

Autumnal Equinox respectively and the change of weather is rapid

and suddenly makes one caught unawares. When I am on duty in

summer, I feel I am in the oven and the humidity of the body is dried

in a short period of time; on the contrary, it seems that I am in a freezer

during the winter time which makes me feel chilly, irrespective of

how many clothes I wear as the icy wind tries to drill in from all the

possible chinks. In the wharf, apart from the sunshine in the sky,

the chilly wind from the beach, there are wildly hard sand blowing

from the coast of mainland China. These are absolutely physical

excitement.

We, as soldiers, carrying out our duties in Liao-Luo wharf, have

acquired the abilities of listening and viewing from all around. This

is because we are exposed to danger as the huge vehicles such as

trucks and cranes drive back and forth in the wharf, which makes

us in danger if we are walking on the street and standing in the

way. It may cause either slight injury and parents will

be informed or even the whole body may

get injured. Thus, it is essential for us to

look around and pay full attention to

all surroundings and try to avoid all

possible danger when fulfi lling our

duties there. For instance, I myself

have seen a situation that the cable

of a crane was snapping into two

and the machine of over ten tons in

weight suddenly fell on one side of

ship; if I, unfortunately, stood in the

wrong place at that amount, I might

be smashed then.

It is our duty to crack down

on smuggling; however, when the

wharf is full of ships, the strength of

黝黑的工人們像是不會疲累的螞蟻不

停東來西往賣力地工作。料羅碼頭是金門物

資進出的大門口，舉凡日用品乃至機械包含

食衣住行等，無不是經由料羅碼頭再分送至

金門各地，連小蜜蜂（機動商販）所販賣的

東西也都是這樣來金門，說料羅是金門的心

臟供給全島的資源也不為過。來到料羅安檢

所算算也十一個多月了，發現金門的氣候似

乎只有夏、冬兩季，而春天、秋天只出現在

春分和秋分兩天，天氣的變化比翻書還快，

常常令人措手不及。夏天執勤彷彿置身於烤

箱，身體的水分一下子就被烤乾；而冬天就

好像在冷凍庫，即便穿再多衣服，冷風也找

得到縫隙鑽進來，讓人冷顫直打。在碼頭除

了天上的大太陽、海邊吹來冷冽的風，還有

討人厭來自對岸大陸隨風漫天亂飛的沙子，

這些帶來肉體的刺激感絕對超過一百分。

我們這些在料羅碼頭值勤的阿兵哥，每

個人都練就眼觀四面、耳聽八方的功夫。碼

頭裡來來往往的貨車、堆高機，只要稍微不

留神、不小心擋到路，馬上就

會遭殃；輕則父母親被問

候，重則被撞個全身

傷痕累累。因此，

我們執勤時須時時

注意前後左右上下

周遭的環境，東閃

西躲地執行勤務。

我就曾經目睹貨船

吊機纜繩斷掉，

十幾噸的機械瞬

間垮在船邊成為

廢鐵，如果當時

我運氣差，並且

站在不該站的位置，大概就會變成肉醬吧！

查緝走私是我們的職責，但是遇到滿船

席時，安檢執行往往會力不從心。由於人手不

足，進出的船隻數目比值檢人員還多，安檢時

常疲於奔走各船席，因此產生了許多狀況。若

是我們會分身術，一個人變成三個人，這樣安

檢一定能滴水不漏，只可惜，我們不是神仙，

根本分身乏術，反而成為包子師傅，專門出

包⋯，長官啊！請給我們多一點人手吧！

當兵的這段日子多半是由無聊、無趣交

織而成，偶然發生的事件，無論好或壞，往往

會讓人印象深刻，給單調的生活增添色彩。除

了和白天的太陽公公、晚上的月亮婆婆、時時

刻刻吹個不停的海風，連續十幾個小時作伴，

這些對於體力的磨練外，克服心靈的空虛、寂

寞，對我來說更是大的考驗，但也讓我體會到

家人、朋友對我的重要。在料羅當兵的酸甜苦

辣滋味雜陳，未來回想起當兵的點滴，必定會

有股懷念的感動湧上心頭。

and ships and boats coming in and out of the wharf outnumber security

guards; thus, we have to rush about each berth, from one ship to another,

in order to carry out security check so that some situations may occur.

At that moment, we really wish to become fairies and divide ourselves

into several, in order to make an excellent security system; unfortunately,

we are only human beings and unable to handle more than one thing at

the same time or to pay our attention to every detail; as a result, some

mistakes were made. Sir, please offer us more helping hands if possible!

The most of the days of military service comprised boredom and

uninteresting things, although things happening, good or bad, always

impressed people and added meanings for the monotonous life. Apart

from the company with the Sun in the day time and the Moon in the

evening and the non-stop wind blowing from the ocean accompanied me

more than ten hours a day. Besides physical trails, how to overcome the

emptiness and loneness of my heart was a greater ordeal for me and that

feeling also made me realize the importance of my families and friends

in my life. The military service in Liao-Luo was full of bitter and sweet.

I am sure I will be touched when some day I recall back the military life

in Liao-Luo.
