Help Wanted: Skilled Tradespeople in High Demand As a tepid job market continues to report discouraging employment numbers, there’s one area that’s clearly bucking the trend – the skilled trades. It’s a sector that shows remarkable resilience to layoffs and outsourcing. Add in good pay, a steady demand for new workers, and excellent pathways to advancement and it’s no surprise that job hunters ranging from new high school grads to career switchers are nixing business suits for hardhats, tool belts and welding torches. “One of the big things that we struggle with day to day here in our industry is the lack of skilled tradespeople,” says Paul Rodriguez, president of NSC Technologies (www.nsc-tech.com), a staffi ng agency that places tradespeople in shipyards and other locations. “Every day my clients are reaching out saying we have a need for 50 welders or we need 80 electricians or 12 painters. There are just enormous opportunities out there in our industry to learn a trade and grow with the company.” These jobs are projected to remain in demand as large numbers of tradespeople near retirement age, making this a savvy choice for people concerned with career security. “The trades industry doesn’t seem to go into economic declines like some of the other fi elds such as the computer industry,” agrees Chris Stephan, chief of interceptor operations for HRSD. “People are always going to need plumbing and electrical work, as are businesses, so going into the trades makes sense from a stability standpoint. There are certain

essentials that are always going to be in need – if your faucet starts leaking, you’re going to have it fi xed.” The pay can be very gratifying as well, says Rodriguez. “If you have a skilled trade, you can easily make $50,000 to $150,000 a year,” he reports. “I have almost a thousand people on my payroll and I’m signing these checks for steel fabricators who are clearing $3,000 and that’s on a weekly basis. Some of them work six months, then take six months off to spend time with their family.” Whether you are a high school or college student, a career switcher, a fi rst time job seeker or a professional with an extensive work history, there are several pathways into the trades. The Virginia Community College System, career and technical schools have developed an extensive list of accredited programs that lead to certifi cation, licensure or degrees in a large number of skilled trade areas. One of the best options for entering a skilled trade is through an apprenticeship program. Here in Hampton Roads you’ll fi nd a wide assortment of opportunities, from local trade groups to regional employers who offer registered apprenticeships that give new hires the opportunity to earn a paycheck while they work toward their journeyman’s card – and they all welcome a diversity of age, gender and race. “Apprenticeships are absolutely a great way to get introduced to the trades,” says Stephan, who is on HRSD’s apprenticeship committee. “Our apprenticeship program is

four years and we have multiple disciplines which run from a very unique set specifi c to HRSD – interceptor technicians, treatment plant operators and maintenance operators – and also extends to carpenters, automotive technicians, electrical staff, instrumentation specialists, equipment techs and machinists.” Some apprentices enter the program from within HRSD, says Stephan, “but we also hire directly into apprenticeship positions, for instance with interceptors and electrical staff.” Visit www.hrsd.com/apprenticeship.shtml for more information. The Tidewater Electrical Industry Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (JATC) offers an excellent fi ve-year apprenticeship program for electricians. Applicants should submit materials by May 1st to be eligible to begin the classroom portion of the apprenticeship in September, but applications are taken year round. Visit www.ibew80.com for an application form or call training director Mike Iacobellis at 480-2812 for more information. Rodriguez recently began a program that trains and certifi es welders for shipyard work. “They are a dying breed so I purchased a fabrication shop and I’ve got ten welding booths set up with standard shipyard equipment.” Rodriguez welcomes questions about working in the trades and can be reached at (757) 399-1738. “There are just enormous opportunities out there in our industry for skilled tradespeople, not only here but throughout the United States,” he says.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics places the number of truck drivers on the road at 3.2 million, making that job sector one of the largest in the country, and it’s only expected to grow. In fact, the government projects that 291,900 new drivers will be needed by 2018, a nine percent jump. That rising demand for more drivers – just as many of the older pros reach retirement age – means trucking careers are shifting into high gear. “There does seems to be a great need for drivers who have good safety records and high standards to take positions,” confi rms Anna Paciulli, offi ce manager for the Chesapeake location of A&R Transport, a national bulk transportation, packaging, distribution and logistics company. She hires drivers for over-the-road hauls – “You could deliver all over the United States,” she says – though this diverse fi eld also includes drivers who work pick-up and delivery runs within their city or region. Some drivers sit behind the wheel of company-owned trucks, while others are independent owner-operators who contract out for jobs. The industry offers both fl exibility and opportunity to drivers with a good safety record. To enter the fi eld, drivers must pass a Department of Transportation physical and earn a commercial driver’s license (CDL). Several local career schools and community colleges offer specialized training that prepares students to pass the test and successfully fi nd work. “Our truck driving classes are picking up and those guys are getting jobs,” reports Theresa Bryant, vice president for workforce development at Tidewater Community College. “We have companies that come in and actually recruit our students right out of school,” adds Matthew Woods, an instructor for TCC’s truck driving program. Age and gender is no barrier to entry. “We have males and females and our students range in age from 21 to maybe 65,” Woods says. “Most of our students probably start off at about $36,000 a year, but a seasoned truck driver with maybe fi ve years of experience will make anywhere from $50,000 to around $70,000,” he says. Along with good pay comes the security of knowing that a driving career isn’t vulnerable to outsourcing, which is another great reason to consider taking your career on the road.

We Service All Major Ports

In a region that’s a major shipbuilding and ship repair hub, it’s the tens of thousands of shipyard tradespeople who provide the skills that keep this industry afl oat, but it’s not all smooth sailing right now. “One of the big things that we struggle with day to day here in our industry is the lack of skilled tradespeople,” says Paul Rodriguez, president of NSC Technologies, a staffi ng agency that places tradespeople in U.S. Navy shipyards from here to San Diego and Pearl Harbor. That means excellent employment opportunities for a wide variety of trades that range from welders, electricians and machinists to pipefi tters, painters and carpenters. While many of the trades practiced at a shipyard are specifi c to shipbuilding (such as shipfi tters), the majority of tradespeople would fi nd a warm welcome in any number of industries. So why choose a shipyard? Good pay is part of the attraction, along with opportunities for professional growth and training resources that are second to none. And many of the shipyards and marine services companies hire apprentices and pay them to learn a trade. There are also the intangible benefi ts, says Rodriguez. “There is the pride in saying hey, I’ve worked on board the USS George H.W. Bush or some other vessel that is used to protect the country,” he says. “You’re a part of something that is very signifi cant to the United States. And how many people actually get the opportunity to step onto an aircraft carrier or a nuclear submarine?” Rodriguez hires a diversity of people, including women. “In fact, one of our best welders is a woman who works for a client on a job that was initially supposed to be a two-month project. They’ve had her for almost fi ve months now and they don’t want to let her go. We don’t discriminate – if you have a skilled trade or a desire to learn a trade, if you’re going to show up every day and perform, then we’re interested in you.” If you’d like to know more about a career in the shipyard trades, Rodriguez welcomes questions; he can be reached at (757) 399-1738.

Whether they’re making a house call to replace an ailing heating unit or performing critical repairs to a multi-million dollar piece of industrial equipment, HVAC techs today are seeing their jobs go increasingly high-tech. “It’s not the same job working with the same old equipment anymore,” points out John Kerner, CEO of the Kerner Group, a multi-company organization that supplies HVAC, electrical, indoor air quality and facility management services. “Instead the HVAC systems are more complex and greener today. “We monitor some systems over the internet and they are programmed with alarms that alert us when certain conditions occur. Say a low pressure valve on one of the units gives us a signal – we know we have a problem and we can get out there and fi x it before it becomes something major.” Not surprisingly, these indispensable workers are seeing job growth projections of 28 percent through 2018 according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, which is much faster than average for the occupations they track. “The last research I did nationwide, the HVAC industry was roughly 50 percent undermanned,” notes Dennis Brakeville, director of education and an HVAC expert at Tidewater Tech. “This is an industry that’s growing, not diminishing,” agrees Kerner. Most HVAC techs enter the fi eld after going through a six-month to two-year program offered by career and technical schools or community colleges. “Our program is 45 weeks,” says Brakeville, “and by the end of those 45 weeks, they have already taken their EPA certifi cation exam.” The median hourly wages of HVAC techs is $19.08, with top earners making more than $30.59 an hour. “I can tell you that our senior mechanics make more than a school teacher,” says Kerner, “and they have company-provided vehicles that they can drive back and forth to work – it’s one less vehicle they have to buy, insure and maintain. “This is a growing career fi eld that is evolving. The more you put into it, the more you’ll get out of it.”

The building trades harbor a group of highly-skilled workers whose talents allow them to move from commercial construction site to residential home remodel to property maintenance to specialty industrial work as market conditions shift. In cyclical boom times, they can’t work enough hours to satisfy demand. During downturns, homeowners still need to replace aging roofs, businesses have to maintain their heating and cooling systems, and manufacturers are dependent on miles of wiring to deliver uninterrupted power. Construction occupations run the gamut from helpers to plumbers to site inspectors and most should see an increase in demand through 2018, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Jobs for carpenters, cement masons, brickmasons, tile setters, drywallers and electricians are expected to increase by 12-14 percent, while insulation installers and construction laborers should see an increase of 17-20 percent. While years ago many people could pick up a construction trade informally, most require special training today. “I would say that’s true for almost every one of the trades in the building industry, and that’s all the way from the folks who are digging footings and pouring concrete to the person who comes in and hooks up your

audio/video wiring,” says Jeff Ainslie, president of Ainslie Group, a local building company. Training programs at local community colleges and technical schools cover some of the trades, while many area builders and subcontractors welcome apprentices and interns. Another training option is the Building Trades Academy created by the Tidewater Builders Association to help students learn those trades in special demand locally, such as carpentry, HVAC, electrical and plumbing. One of the academy’s most popular programs teaches property management and maintenance. “We had a number of the apartment management companies come to us and ask us to tailor a program for them,” explains Ainslie. “They need people who can go into someone’s home, communicate clearly, analyze what the maintenance issue is, determine how to take care of it and then make it happen very quickly. It’s been a very successful program for both the students and the management companies.” For more information on the building trades, contact the Tidewater Builders Association at 757-420-2566.

Behind every fl ight that lands safely is a small army of unseen aviation and avionics equipment mechanics who are responsible for keeping the plane in sound repair and safely aloft. Aviation mechanics are responsible for preventive maintenance, aircraft repair and FAA-required inspections. Many specialize in one of those areas or with specifi c aircraft types or systems. A popular related fi eld is avionics, which includes repairing and maintaining navigation, radar, communication and other electronic components. “Until a few years ago, companies looked for either aviation mechanics or avionics techs – today they want someone who can do both jobs,” says Jerry Lee, Director of Education at Aviation Institution of Maintenance in Chesapeake. There are about 170 FAA-certifi ed schools around the country that offer training, including the Aviation Institution of Maintenance, and programs generally span 12- to 24 months. “Our aviation mechanics program by itself runs 19 months and the aviation mechanics program combined with avionics takes 23 months,” reports Lee. His students range from transitioning military personnel who want to continue working with aircraft as civilians and career switchers who are looking for something interesting to do. Females do quite well in the fi eld, says Lee. Aviation mechanics should see a job growth increase of 7 percent through 2018 according to Bureau of Labor Statistics and Rondell Davis, corporate admissions trainer, says their Aviation Institution of Maintenance graduates are experiencing no problems fi nding jobs. “This is defi nitely a good long-term career fi eld. Graduates are going to work for the major airlines and for regional airlines. Many of our students go to work for government contractors.” Other aviation mechanics fi nd homes in fi elds like the aerospace and automotive industries since their skill sets transfer easily to related industries, and some go to work for the FAA or move into supervisory positions. The median hourly pay is $24.71 and can go higher than $33/hr. for top earners. Benefi ts frequently include free air travel. So if the idea of a desk-bound job holds little appeal for you, aviation/avionics is one high-fl ying fi eld that offers technical challenge along with generous pay and great benefi ts.

While many job sectors watched uneasily as unemployment rates climbed, local electricians may have been wondering what all the angst was about. “We’ve been very fortunate in this area,” says Mike Iacobellis, a licensed electrician and director of the Tidewater Electrical Industry Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee (JATC). “If you read about 8 or 10 percent unemployment in the country, our local union (IBEW Local 80) and apprentices were below a single digit. Our contractors do an array of work – industrial, commercial, a lot of government work – so we were able to keep all of our apprentices employed as well as our journeymen.” The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects a job growth increase in this fi eld of 12 percent through 2018, with electricians skilled in voice, data and video wiring seeing the most demand. Community colleges, along with career and technical schools, offer excellent programs that lead to the required state license, but most electricians acquire their skills in a four or fi ve-year apprenticeship program like the one Iacobellis oversees. One of the advantages of the apprenticeship

pathway is that you earn a paycheck while you learn. “It’s paid on-the-job training, and one of the nice things about our program, since it’s union sponsored, is that apprentices actually receive health insurance and retirement benefi ts that are all paid for by the contractor who is employing them,” lists Iacobellis. “By the time they go into the second year of the program, they receive a total of three pensions that are paid for automatically. “We get a lot of applicants right out of high school, but we also get people who want to switch careers; we have apprentices from age 18 to 50 coming in and doing well in the program. It’s open to everybody who is looking for a career and once you graduate from the program there’s always opportunity there. You can be your own boss, you can become an estimator, a project manager, a foreman – there’s no limit to what you can do in this trade,” he says. Applications are accepted year round, but the classroom portion of the apprenticeship starts each September, so materials for the 2012 class should be submitted by May 1st . You’ll fi nd an application form at www.ibew80.com, or for more information you may call Iacobellis at 480-2812.
