1. 構文と動詞の意味に関する諸説1.1 使役移動構文と移動構文

●使役移動構文

Caused Motion Construction (Goldberg1995);

●構文と動詞の関係に対する制約

1) 一般的制約　構文の意味と動詞の意味の両立性

(13) 動詞の意味は、構文の意味に対して、様態、手段などの定められた関係のいずれか

一つを持たなければならない。(Goldberg1995, Goldberg & Jackendoff 2004)

(14) a, The Semantic Coherence Principle(Goldberg 1995, Goldberg & Jackendoff 2004)

構文の項と動詞の項がunifyするためには、後者が前者の事例でなければならない。

b. 構文と動詞は項は必ず一つunifyしなければならない。(Goldberg 1995)

(15) 構文の項と動詞の項はすべて実現しなければならない。 ( G o l d b e r g &Jackendoff 2004)

2) 各構文に課せられた意味的制約

(16)使役移動構文の諸制約 (Goldberg 1995)

a. 具体的には主語が動作主か自然の力であり、道具であってはならない

b. 使役事象と、（結果として生じることが）含意されている移動の間に、意志判断が介在してはならない。

c. 移動が厳密には含意されない場合は、指定された経路に沿った移動が、他の要因が特に働かなければ当然起

こるものとして想定されるものでなければならない。

d. 状態変化を引き起こす行為が、慣習的なやり方で行われ、付随する形で移動を引き起こし、かつ、それが移

動を引き起こす意図をもって行われる場合、その移動

の経路を指定することができる

e. 移動の経路は動詞で表されている行為によって完全に決定づけられなければならない。

f. 慣習化されたシナリオによる使役の場合は、介在する原因があっても一つの出来事として認知的にとりまと

めることができる。

2.2 問題点

2.2.1参加する動詞の規定構文に課せられた意味では、どの動詞が使役移動構文に使えるかを予測できな

い(松本 2002)。(17) The company flew her to an interview.

(18) a. *John escaped the man out of the cell.

b. *Susan entered the man into the house.

c. *Jack descended man into the underground bunker.

d. *Mary left the man for New York.

2.2.2 使役構文での意味

●表される使役のタイプが同じ類の動詞でも異

なる (松本 2002) cf. 構文の多義性(20) a. The horseman jumped the horse over

the fence.

b. The horseman ran the horse into the barn.

c. The horseman swam the horse to the shore.

●動詞ごとにどの構文の意味と結びつくかを示

さなければならない。

---> 動詞の意味の記述は簡素化されない。

●どの意味になるかが、個々の動詞の表す事象

の事情によるのであれば、各動詞の意味の問

題として扱う方が理にかなっている。

2.2.3 経路句と移動の関連性

移動がentailされない(とされる)動詞でも、経路句なしで移動が表される場合があ

る

(24) a. John {kick/hit} the wall (but it didn’t move).

b. Mary {pushed/pulled} the wall (but it didn’t move).

(25) a. He can {kick/hit} a ball faster thananyone else.

b. He can {push/pull} the cart fasterthan anyone else.

c. He pushed the cart inch by inch.

2.2.3 経路句と“unselectedobject”の関連性

経路句なしで、“unselected object” が現れる場合がある

3. 移動表現の扱い3.1 経路句と移動の関連性

3.1.1 「移動をentailしない」floatなどの場合(30) The bottle floated under the bridge. (Carter

1988)

goal reading = floatが “移動”を表す

location reading = floatが“移動”を表さない

(31) a. The bottle floated slowly under thebridge.

b. *The bottle lay slowly under the bridge.

3.1.2 runなどの場合

3.1.3 buzzなどの場合

(37) a. I saw the train roaring at an incrediblespeed.

b. ?I saw the train rumbling slowly

c. *I saw the train screeching very slowly.

d. *I saw bugs buzzing very fast.

4. 考察とまとめ

●動詞の意味の記述の簡素化は、構文の

意味を仮定することにより必ずしも達

成できない(kick, float, run, swim)。

　　多義語の存在はそんなに問題か。hand, byなど

●「移動の意味が構文的意味による」とされ

る場合でも、その移動の意味は特定の形式の

存在 (PP)とは必ずしも結びつけられない（kick, jump, float, roarなど）

●しかし、移動の意味が特定の形式の存在と

結びついているケースはある(buzz, sneezeなど)。
