Edward

Getting to Know the Transportation Department

Among the services provided by Carefirst, I feel like the Transportation Department remains inconspicuous. What motivates these drivers to serve the community as they face the pressure of time and challenges of inclement weather?

I spoke with Edward of the Transportation Department. He explained that drivers provide door to door shuttle service to those in need. For example, driving seniors from their home to Carefirst Adult Day Programs (ADP) and back. To seniors such as my mother, the ability to go to ADP and having safe opportunities leave the house is an integral part of their well-being. In addition, transport services to medical appoint-ments and senior Congregate Dining programs in the Scar-borough area and York Region are also their responsibility. My father personally benefitted from Carefirst transportation services to the hospital two years ago. While most would as-sume being a driver requires, first and foremost, good driving skills, Edward mentions that the most important quality of a successful volunteer driver is their attention to detail, kind-ness, empathy, and selflessness.

As demand for transportation services increases, so does our need for volunteer drivers. With limited resources, even though we have staff drivers, we rely heavily on kind-hearted volunteer drivers who sometimes even double as translators. Edward hopes that we can encourage more volunteers to join their driver fleet. Oh “Sew” Fun Workshop By: Natalie Cheung,

    Youth Volunteer

For many youth, sewing isn’t a part of their everyday rou-tine. However, April’s Youth Club meeting provided a chance to exercise that life skill. We gathered togeth-er to sew a collection of adorable plushies that we intended to gift to seniors- in fact, one senior stopped by to receive a “chick” during the creative pro-cess! While some members resembled expert seam-stresses and others were at the level of a novice, each person put their total care and unique touches onto each chick. By helping to release stress, develop vital skills, and connect with new people in the com-munity, this craft work-shop made for a “Oh Sew Fun” Saturday!

By: David Yun Ze Li, Program Alumni & Youth Volunteer Normally I’d spend March Break lazing around, wasting my time sleeping in, but that has changed because of the Carefirst Youth Volunteer Leadership Training Program. Now hear me out, although volunteering over your hard earned break from school might sound like a drag, it’s not what you think. This program gives you new experiences such as interacting with seniors and planning senior friendly recreation activities. You learn new things such as Wing Chun and Emergency First Aid and I personally feel that I am lucky to have learned such important life saving skills. I also received First Aid/CPR Certification, which are one of the requirements to become a lifeguard if you are looking to get a summer job. If you are still not excited, then let me tell you the most valuable thing I earned - connections with other people! Now I have more ways to acquire volunteer opportunities, since Carefirst provides plentiful opportunities to earn volunteer hours. I can speak from personal experience as an IB student that earning 150 CAS hours on top of the re-quired 40 is a tall order. I’ve always grasped at every volunteer opportunity I could find but it was never enough... I have been receiving volunteering offers to a variety of events and special activities almost every week! Don’t be afraid to apply! The staff at Carefirst are really nice and you can also make new friends with other volunteers as well. You never know what it’s like if you don’t try. Long story short, to those students and parents out there reading this, I enjoyed the program and it is definitely worth your time.

Puzzles with my Pals By: Bryan Kozdas, Youth Volunteer

On March 9th, 2019, Carefirst Youth Club took part in an “escape room” type puzzle event where we had to find a “boarding ticket” in an hour in order to complete our mission. Though we weren’t actually locked in a room like most other escape rooms, it was a fun event to help the volunteers get to know each other more, so we can work in better synergy. The “escape room” in-cluded clever puzzles that required us to think outside of the box to solve. The puz-zles taught us that you can’t always work by yourself, or solve things by yourself. It taught us that some problems have to be tackled with others, as multiple brains are better than one. Overall, the “escape room” was a creative and fun activity for us Carefirst youth club members to experi-ence. It was a good opportunity to bond with other youths! Go out and have fun!
