1960Games akin to cricket have been played on the fields ofEngland since the middle ages, but a game called'crecket' first appears in 1598. Hampshire’s own cricketing history owes much to thelegacy of the Hambledon and Alresford cricket clubs andthe pre-eminent players produced at Winchester College.This leaflet offers you an opportunity to trace the history

of the development of the sport across the c ounty ofHampshire. Why not make Winchester your base as youuncover the fascinating landmarks of cricket dottedacross Hampshire?

CRICKETTrace its evolution in Winchester and Hampshire’s countryside

Jane’s father, George Austen, (1731-1805) was the rector of St Nicholas Church in the parish of Steventon. Reverend Austen took in boys to tutor.

His wife Cassandra (née Leigh)(1739-1827) was a sociable, witty woman whomGeorge had met while studying in Oxford.Cassandra was visiting her uncle, TheophilusLeigh, Master of Balliol College. When Cassandraleft the city, George followed her to Bath and

continued to court her until they got married on26 April 1764, at the church of St Swithin in Bath.

Although a close knit family, by today’s standards the household was subject to somewhat fluid arrangements regarding the care of

offspring. As was customary for the gentry at the time, Jane’s parents sent her as an infant to be cared for by a farming

neighbour, Elizabeth Littlewood.

Her brother George, who is thought to havesuffered from epilepsy, also lived away from

the family home. And the third child, Edward(shown left), was adopted by his father’s

third cousin, Mr Thomas Knight, eventuallyinheriting Godmersham and Chawton

House - close to the house in Chawtonwhere Jane and Cassandra moved to

with their mother.

Arrangements like these were normal for the time - the familywas close and affectionate and

recurring themes of familybonds and respectable rural

living would play a strong part in Jane’s writing.

Family ties

Discover Jane Austen’s own jewellery, including her renownedring, at Jane Austen’s House Museum, Chawton. The ring wassold at auction for over £152,000 where it was accompaniedby a handwritten letter from Jane’s sister-in-law EleanorAusten (Henry’s second wife) bequeathing the rare jewel toher niece Caroline. It was ordered by the Minister of Culturethat the ring must stay in the UK and, after donations madefollowing a campaign by Jane Austen’s House Museum, it can now be seen on display in the museum.

As the film and television industry continue to delight uswith exquisitely shot Jane Austen adaptations, thequestion of who the woman behind the novels actuallywas becomes ever more intriguing.

Maybe that’s why each year thousands of visitors continueto flock to the landmarks of her life in Winchester andHampshire’s surrounding countryside to get closer to the‘real’ Jane Austen.

Find out why visiting the area is leaving so many Austenreaders with a lasting sense of history, place and person.

SEASON of mists and mellow fruitfulness,

Close bosom-friend of the maturing sun;

Conspiring with him how to load and bless

With fruit the vines that round the thatch-eaves run;

To bend with apples the moss'd cottage-trees,

And fill all fruit with ripeness to the core;

To swell the gourd, and plump the hazel shells

With a sweet kernel; to set budding more,

And still more, later flowers for the bees,

Until they think warm days will never cease;

For Summer has o'erbrimm'd their clammy cells.

Who hath not seen thee oft amid thy store?

Sometimes whoever seeks abroad may find

Thee sitting careless on a granary floor,

Thy hair soft-lifted by the winnowing wind;

Or on a half-reap'd furrow sound asleep,

Drowsed with the fume of poppies, while thy hook

Spares the next swath and all its twinèd flowers:

And sometimes like a gleaner thou dost keep

Steady thy laden head across a brook;

Or by a cyder-press, with patient look,

Thou watchest the last oozings, hours by hours.

Where are the songs of Spring? Ay, where are they?

Think not of them, thou hast thy music too,—

While barrèd clouds bloom the soft-dying day

And touch the stubble-plains with rosy hue;

Then in a wailful choir the small gnats mourn

Among the river-sallows, borne aloft

Or sinking as the light wind lives or dies;

And full-grown lambs loud bleat from hilly bourn;

Hedge-crickets sing; and now with treble soft

The redbreast whistles from a garden-croft;

And gathering swallows twitter in the skies.

To Autumn

The English Romantic poet, John Keats, stayed in Winchester

during the late summer and early autumn of 1819. Despite

being tormented by his love for Fanny Brawne and ill-health,

his visit to the city seems to have been a peaceful, reflective

Keats enjoyed a daily walk though the Cathedral Close and

water meadows to St Cross. He was so inspired by the natural

One of King Alfred’s defensive ‘burhs’,

Winchester was established as refuge and strong

point to resist the Danish invaders. A raiding army had

destroyed the settlement in 860AD but the old

Roman town walls were refurbished and a new

street system was laid out inside the walls. These

intramural streets (such as North Walls) were laid with

the intention of rushing troops to threatened parts of

the walls. The town’s walls were largely

dismantled by the end of the 18th century.
