English courses 15/ 16 (Capacity Enhanced Grant Report-CEG) This year with the Capacity Enhanced Grant (CEG) our school arranged several English courses. They were TSA Speaking Programme and Reading and Writing Workshops for Primary 3 and Primary 4 through Eureka Language Education Centre and Nice Education to enhance pupils language proficiency and to cater for the diverse needs of learners. Besides, there is a speaking programme for P.5 classes. The local English teacher would co-teach with the NET who was provided by the service provider. The NET in P.5 would teach the pupils some presentation skills through mind mapping and reading aloud with appropriate intonation, stress, pausing, etc. Furthermore, we had speech training for pupils to take part in the speech festival this year by Venture and the English drama training for P.4 to P.6 pupils through Dramatic English Limited. Apart from the P.5 classes, the P.3 to P.4 English courses were for more able pupils that were top twenty in the levels each term. There were about twenty pupils in a class. In Reading and Writing Courses for P.3 and P.4 pupils, pupils could learn to communicate their ideas in English, the features of different text types and their respective writing skills. Engaged in class activities such as article appreciation and group discussion, pupils were more effectively inspired by the fun with creative writing. For drama training, the twenty-one pupils could build up an overall foundation of general skills for training. In speech training, pupils could build up confidence in both choral and solo speech training. Overall speaking, pupils could learn English effectively in a relaxing and fun environment through different English courses. In Communicative English, the teachers taught students the ways to communicate in English effectively. Students found that speaking English is fun and easy. Teachers Observation by the local teachers and the native English teachers: All local teachers stated that pupils enjoyed the above English courses. Speech training The NET teachers worked with the school teachers to train pupils for Speech Festival. The
choral and solo training put focus on vocalization, clarity of pronunciation, projection, posture and expressive qualities. The teachers stated that most of the pupils were motivated and proactive in the lessons. All pupils of the choral speaking team claimed that they enjoyed the lessons and they learnt the choral speaking skills. 95% of the pupils who joined the solo speaking training agreed that they learnt from the suggestions given by the NET teachers.
English drama course The NET claimed that they were an excellent class. The pupils really applied themselves
fully in all areas of purpose. Their standard of English was excellent. The best feature of

the class would be their co-operation. At all times they were supportive, kind and friendly to one another and to their teachers. All the twenty-one pupils reported that they liked the course and they found the course useful. After taking the course, they all developed oral communication and presentation skills and the course could help them to think and create ideas. Also, self-confidence was developed and they became more confident on speaking English.
P.3 Reading and Writing Workshop The students were very proactive throughout the course. The teacher claimed that they all
loved to learn although some students could understand the instructions better than others. They were willing to work together. They had improvement in pronunciation and intonation and stress after the course. They could listen for gist and specific information. Majority of them found that the course met their expectation. They agreed that the course content and handouts were useful.
P.4 Reading and Writing The teacher stated most boys in the class were motivated to learn, girls were quieter. They all
had very good English but half of the class was willing to try. Most of them had motivation to learn and willingness to work together. Nearly all of them had confidence in speaking English. More than 60% of pupils found that the course met their expectation. 75% of them thought that the course content and handouts were very useful to them. Most of them were satisfied with the course. They liked the teacher very much. They stated that the teacher was well prepared for the class and the teacher was knowledgeable on the subject.
P.3TSASpeakingProgramme All students stated that they liked the speaking programme. Nearly 90% of Speaking
Programme students stated that they could speak English better than before. All respondents claimed that learning English is fun and they all liked the activities throughout the course. Besides, all of the students agreed that they would like to have more English lessons in the future because they found that they could learn English through fun games and activities.
P.4 TSA Speaking Programme The pupils understood the teachers instructions. With prompting, the class was able to create
a text, some even create their own sentences. There are 95% of students liked TSA Speaking Programme and they found that learning English is fun. All of them claimed that they could speak English better than before. 90% of them found that learning English is fun and all of them liked the activities in the programme so they always took part in the lesson activities. They believed that they could learn English through fun and games. 90% of them wanted to

have more English lessons in the future. P.5 TSA Speaking Programme From the evaluation form, we knew that the P.5 pupils have motivation to learn although
sometimes they were a bit distracted. They found that the course difficulty was appropriate. They were attentiveness to teacher and they were willingness to participate. Generally speaking, they could use appropriate function and grammar. Pupils were ready to learn and participate in all the activities. They were able to implement skills that they were taught in class. They were willing to speak up in class.
