The meeting focused on the theme: “Forging a common stand geared towards building resilient communities”. It was facilitated by CENG, Extension Service Center (ESC), and Research and Development Center (RDC).

The mission and goal of this activity were: to provide a convergent zone for multi-disciplinary specialists to work on sustainability and resiliency; and to be a leading resource of multi-sectoral actors in the formulation of policies to advance collaboration among various stakeholders towards sustainable directions. that students should learn to live a life of a volunteer and other plans of the academe for the BUCM. Part of what she said was “it is possible that part of our extension program would be a family-based health care program such that each family would know how to manage their health problems in the immediate aftermath of a disaster.” The said event will be yearly conducted which will provide new learning for the BUCM faculty and students. Mr. Joseph Cristobal, Director of the Philippine Cultural Education Program, represented the National

Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) to witness the said event. The exhibit is an entry to the Competition of the Diwang: Sagisag Kultura, a joint project of NCCA and the Department of Education (DepEd) aiming to promote awareness and appreciation for local and national cultural icons. Bicol University Graduate School (BUGS), in partnership with the US Peace Corps Volunteers in Albay conducted a regional forum on Developing Students’

Critical Thinking Skills and Creativity on August 2 at the BU Amphitheater. The forum is part of BUGS’ Lifelong Learning Program, and aims to (1) develop a deepened understanding and appreciation of the link between people’s critical thinking skills and creativity and a nation’s productivity and progress; (2) adopt teaching approaches/strategies that will enhance student’s critical thinking skills and creativity; and

(3) design a classroom/school environment that is conducive for the development of students’ critical thinking skills and creativity. Guest speakers were Ms. Diane Klewitz, retired High School Principal and counselor from Los Angeles Unified School District, and Ms. Kathryn Tedford, MA Special Education and Former SPED Teacher. Buwan ng Wika Celebration Wikang Filipino, Wika ng Pagkakaisa is this year’s theme for Buwan ng Wika 2014 organized by Bicol University College of Arts and Letters Filipino Department in partnership with the Pinagkaisang Mag-aaral sa Filipino (PIMAFIL), Pres. Fay Lea Patria M. Lauraya was the keynote speaker for the opening program held on August 4, 2014 at the BU Amphitheatre. Cultural presentations and competitions were held

during the month-long celebration. The closing program was held on August 27 at the BU Amphitheatre where the BU International students, Min Byun Jung (Korean) and Sarah Michelle Newberg (American) danced Pandango Rinconada.

BUILDERS hold stakeholders’ meeting

BUCM conducts 1st Integrative Health and Medicine Seminar

To appreciate Integrative Medicine practices in hospital and community settings, and to discuss possible Bicol University College of Medicine (BUCM) and Bicol Regional Teaching and Training Hospital (BRTTH) strategies in extension service work are the main objectives of the First Integrative Health and Medicine Seminar held August 16 at the BU Amphitheater, through the collaborative efforts of Mr. Nagato Azuma and BUCM. The event was dubbed, “Integrative Medicine in Action: Community and Hospital Experiences”.

Dr. Ruben N. Caragay, BUCM Dean formally opened the event with an introduction on the importance of integrative health and medicine as a program for the community. He also provided the gist of the seminar and its significance in promoting health. The first speaker, Dr. Alfonso T. Macaraeg, Ph.D, University Board Secretary and Director, Operations Planning and Development came to Bicol University on August 22 for a short benchmarking opportunity, where they met with BU President Fay M. Lauraya

and were oriented about the university’s organizational framework and quality management system, as well as its profile and best practices in instruction, research, and extension.

Bicol University 26th In-House Review of Completed Researches organized by the Research and Development Center (RDC) was held on August 28 at the Higher Education

Regional Research Center, Bicol University East Campus. Winners were proclaimed under five thematic areas. For Global Competitiveness of Business and Industry, Nicanor B. Balbin’s research entitled “Development of Multi-System Automotive Electrical Trainer” won the first place. Mr Balbin also received the first place for Poster Presentation.
