Jungle Operations International Course

GUIDELINES TO CANDIDATES (Updated on Aug 1st, 2017)

1. AIM To establish the first contact with the military from the Friendly Nations, candidates to the Jungle Operations International Course, guiding them to their intellectual, physical, organic, psychological, material and administrative preparation for the Course.

To greet the military from the Friendly Nations who have decided to attend the Jungle Operations International Course, to be carried out by the Jungle Warfare Instruction Center (CIGS), the world reference for operations in the Jungle, thereby demonstrating a high sense of professionalism and search for the technical professional improvement.

2. GENERAL GUIDELINES The Jungle Operations International Course is specialized in combat training. Therefore, it

requires that the candidate, future Trainee, has some basic professional knowledge related to military activities that are taught in their native countries. This knowledge will be adapted to operations in jungle environment during the Course.

It is interesting that the candidates to the Jungle Operations International Course have some knowledge about surviving in the wilderness. They should also have already gone through a minimum organic adaptation to this operational environment before the beginning of the Course.

It is important that the candidates have enough time, in their countries of origin, to carry out their physical, organic, intellectual, psychological, material and administrative preparation.

All teaching and administrative activities will be carried out by the instructors and by the staff members in English. Therefore, the trainees are required to be proficient in English

in order to be able to follow the routine activities under minimum learning and safety conditions.



3. SPECIFIC GUIDELINES a. Physical Preparation Having an excellent physical condition is critical to attend the Course. Initial physical

tests will be carried out in the candidate's home country, according to the instructions given by the Amazon Military Command (CMA), as in letter "b", and supervised by the Brazilian Military Attaché in the country of origin.

In order to accomplish the candidate's registration, the Physical Aptitude Test for Enrollment (EAFM) will be held in the city of Manaus - AM, by CIGS. EAFM will be similar to the initial physical test carried out in the applicant's home country, as the letter "c" . If the candidate fails the EAFM, he will not attend the Course and he must return to his country of origin.

The candidate's physical preparation should not only aim the EAFM to be held in Manaus - AM, as this is only an approval test for the candidate’s registration, stating that the military has MINIMUM conditions to attend the Jungle Operations International Course.

It is worth mentioning that during the Course, the military will undergo various activities that require resistance to intense and prolonged physical effort. Therefore, physical preparation is crucial for the completion of the Course. In some cases, such as Tactical Swimming, the lack of specific physical preparation may endanger the safety of the trainee.

The preparation for the Tactical Swimming activity should be done gradually, starting with the candidate swimming and floating in trunks. Throughout the training, the candidate should increase the time and weight anchored to the body, so that, by the end of the preparation, he is able to swim long distances (at least 02 km) and float in the full combat uniform, with his equipment and armed with his rifle, for at least 10 continuous minutes.

The candidate must also prepare for aerobic (continuous running) and neuromuscular activities, mainly lower limbs, due to the long distances that will be walked during the Course.

In order to be in good physical condition so as to be approved in EAFM and attend the Jungle Operations International Course, the candidate must follow a physical training schedule organized by a specialist, so as not to suffer injuries or present "over training" symptoms during his preparation. At the CIGS website (www.cigs.ensino.eb.br) the candidate will find a physical training plan, as well as a nutritional guide, prepared by the Brazilian Army Physical Training Research Institute (IPCFEx), which may be used as a subsidy for his /her preparation.

Throughout the Jungle Operations International Course, the Trainee will undergo intense physical effort, such as:

TASKS

Running eight (8) km in 60 '- wearing the combat uniform as well as the cap, but not wearing a shirt .

Running with the combat uniform, equipment, weapon (rifle) and backpack in during shifts between instructions.

TASKS (Tactical Swimming)

Swimming with the combat uniform, rifle, equipment and backpack.



Unequiping in aquatic environments with the combat uniform, rifle, equipment and backpack.

Performing the modified side swimming (Indian) for at least 15m in combat uniform, carrying the weapon and the equipment.

Swimming at least 800m in combat uniform and carrying the equipment, using a rope attached to the body to drag the anchored backpack and weapon.

Floating in combat uniform, equipment and weapon for at least 10’ continuously.

Swimming long distances (over 2,000m) with the combat uniform and equipment.

underwater swimming with the combat uniform and equipment for at least 10m.

b. Initial physical test

The Initial Physical Test will be held in the candidate's home country, carried out by its Armed Forces and supervised by the Brazilian Military Attaché in the country, according to the instructions in "c". The Initial Physical Test should follow the same scores as the ones for the Physical Aptitude Test for Enrollment (EAFM). It should also be done according to the requirements of EAFM, in order to provide the candidate with the best conditions to succeed in EAFM, which is eliminatory.

The Brazilian Military Attaché must send a list of the candidates and their results on the Inicial Physical Tests to the 5th Subchefia EME via DIEX. c. Physical Aptitude Test for Enrollment (EAFM)

1) Accomplishment Conditions The Physical Aptitude Test for Enrollment (EAFM) will be held in Manaus – AM. CIGS will be in charge of it. THE TEST IS ELIMINATORY FOR ENROLLMENT. The trainees will have two attempts to carried out the test, with an interval of at least one day between them, except for the military march, which must be carried out only once. The candidate can only have a second attempt in one of the tests. If the candidate does not reach the expected score in more than one test, even in the first attempt, he/she will automatically be deemed inapt for enrollment purposes. The trainee who does not carry out any of the EAFM tests for any reason, will not be able to enroll the Course. a) Running The candidate must run the distance specified in the EAFM index table, on flat ground, according to the segment. If there is unevenness in the path, it should be smooth and, to the possible extent, offset by a reverse slope. The performance time will be recorded by the Enforcement and Supervision Commission (CAF). It will be carried ou in combat uniform, with no cap and no shirt. For candidates from the female segment, the uniform will be the same with the addition of a black bustier (top). b) Pull-up and Hang Pull-Up Must be carried out as prescribed in items 1) and 2) of letter d, number 6, Ordinance No. 032 - EME, 31 March 2008 (GUIDELINE FOR ARMY MILITARY PHYSICAL TRAINING AND ITS EVALUATION) and as the in the Military Physical Training Campaign Manual (C 20-20). d) Push-ups Must be carried out as prescribed in items 1) and 2) of letter b, number 6, Ordinance No. 032 - EME, 31 March 2008 (GUIDELINE FOR ARMY MILITARY PHYSICAL TRAINING AND ITS EVALUATION) and as the in the Military Physical Training Campaign Manual (C 20-20). It will be carried out in combat uniform, eith no cap or shirt. For candidates from the female segment, the uniform will be the same with the addition of a black bustier (top).

e) Submerse swimming The test may be carried out in any aquatic environment without rapids, preferably in a tactical tank. The planned route should be performed in a single apnea, in any style, without any part of the body touching the surface. The transposed area should be demarcated by rays or strings. The corresponding marking distances for 0 (zero), five (5) and ten (10) meters must be demarcate. The markings should be exceeded by the candidate's body so as to be considered as accomplished. The military’s body may touch the pole, provided that the underwater swimming ends after doing so.

In the starting point, the candidate must not use any kind of propulsion, and must be in the standing or natural fluctuation position. The test will be carried out in combat uniform without cap, with lowered sleeves. f) Climbing the vertical Rope The Trainees must climb a vertical sisal rope, with a 1.5 (one and a half) inch diameter without initial propulsion from the base (ground or mattress). The rope must be marked out at 0 (zero), three (3) and four (4) meters high. The markings should be exceeded by both the applicant's hands in order to be considered as accomplished. The initial marking 0 (zero) should be 1.80 (one meter and eighty centimeters) above ground level, so that the candidate starts to climb with both hands beneath it. It will be carried out in combat uniform, with no cap or shirt. For candidates from the female segment, the uniform will be the same with the addition of a black bustier (top). g) 400m Tactical Swimming The test may be carried out in any aquatic environment without rapids. The candidate must swim in any style, except submerse swiming (when the military stays for longer than 5 seconds with the head under the water), starting form the standing position or natural fluctuation, with no impulsion. The military may not lean on any type of flotation aid device. The test will be held in combat uniform with no cap, with lowered sleeves.



h) Flotation The test may be carried out in any aquatic environment without rapids and in accordance with the index table for EAFM. The military shoul keep his/her body in vertical position (characterized by no belly, buttocks, waist, legs and feet out of the water). The military must not perform lateral displacements, or lean on any aid (floating or tactical tank edges) during the test. The head should always be outside the water. It is forbidden to plunge the face in the water. The time counting will start with the candidate in the standing up or natural flotation position. The test will be carried out in combat uniform without cap, ARMED WITH PÁRA-FAL ,with lowered sleeves and no wristwatches. IF THE CANDIDATE IS CALLED ATTENTION THREE TIMES FOR FLOTATING OUT OF THE ESTABLISHED PATTERNS (ESTABLISHED RULES), HE/SHE WILL BE INTERRUPTED DURING THE TEST AND THE OBJECTIVE WILL BE CONSIDERED AS NOT ACHIEVED.

i) March

Marching according to the conditions in the EAFM index table on a road. If there is unevenness in the path, it should be smooth and as far as possible, compensated by an opposite unevenness (in this case, it is ideal that the arrival coincides with the starting line).

It will be carried out in combat uniform with cap, armed (Pára-FAL), carrying equipment and backpack.

The equipment must have the following items: - North American belt and suspender; - 02 (two) magazine holders (Pára-FAL) with 02 (two) magazines each; - 02 (dois) canteen holders with 02 (two) canteens (full) and 01 (one) mug; and - 01 (one) machete. The water from the canteens can be consumed during the course of the march. The backpack will be weighed at the beginning and at the end of the march. IF ITS

c. Organic Preparation

Since the Jungle Operations International Course is a combat course, with specific characteristics of the jungle operating environment, in order to succeed, the candidate should be in excelent organic conditions.

The candidate must take previous health care, specially dental care, and take care of chronical diseases. A balanced diet is also a factor that should be observed by the candidate. If possible, he/she must follow a nutritionist’s diet program. By doing so, the future trainee will start the Course able to go through intense and long physical effort along with the the physical exhaustion motivated by the jungle itself. The immunization by vaccine (tetanus, yellow fever, hepatitis B) will prevent diseases. It is important that the military with chronical and joint diseases go through a specific preparation, being aware that such health problems can affect his/her performance during the Course.

d. Initial medical examination

The medical tests will be carried out in the applicant's home country, according to the protocol published by the Brazilian Army Health Board. The result of these medical examinations must be sent to CMA, by the Brazilian Military Attaché in the country, through the minutes with a list of the apt candidates. Unfit candidates in medical examinations in the country of origin should not be included on the list for the Course.



e. Health inspection for enrollment purposes (ISM) The health inspection for enrollment purposes (ISM) will be held in Manaus - AM,

under the supervision of CMA. Only the able candidates may be enrolled in Course. In order to carry out the inspection , a Special Health Inspection Board (JISE) will be chosen. This board must draw up, by the end of the ISM, the minutes of each candidate with the individual results. Theses results will be published in the CIGS Internal Bulletin (BI).

The health inspection must meet the requirements found in IGPMEx, in IRPMEx, in NTPMEx, in DECEX Rules and the Regulatory Instructions for registration, selection and enrollment at CIGS (CIGS IRISM).

At the ISM, medical examinations - with their respective reports shall be presented by the applicant, as Annex A. Only the candidates who are considered able at ISM will carry out EAFM .

f. Intellectual preparation for the Course One of the instruments that the candidate will have in order to fulfill his/her mission is the

intellectual preparation. In order to do so, here is a list of the most important issues to be discussed at the International Operations Stage in the Jungle, so that the applicant can get prepared:

A good material preparation contributes to the success on the Course. The gear that must be provided by the trainee to complete the equipment, the backpack and the load baggage (bag with spare gear) and those that are distributed by CIGS to the trainees will be presented in this item.

When the trainee moves to the Instruction bases located in the Instruction Training area, he/she must carry his/her equipment, backpack and load baggage. Therefore, it is recommended that by the end of the mobilization week all the gear is able to be used.

The constitution of some kits must meet the particularities of each military, so each kit must contain the gear deemed necessary to accomplish the mission. The kits described in this guidance are mandatory, however its content is at the discretion of the trainee (it is not mandatory to have all the equipment in the list below). The list presented in these guidelines is merely a suggestion. The gear contained in the kits should meet the needs of the trainee during the Course.

Special attention should be paid to the practicality, portability and sealing of kits. The containers should not be too large and must be packed in the equipment or backpack, in a place where it can be quickly accessed. Most of the time, during the Course, the trainee’s backpack will be the only source of gear.

Regarding the trainee’s health, it is important to state that self-medication is prohibited in any situation during the Course. Thus, in case of necessity, the medical team that constantly monitor the course will perform medical care and prescribe the drugs to be used. Drugs of routine use may be carried by the trainee in his/her first-aid kit, such as: bandages, antiseptic, antifungal, and analgesic medication (provided that the trainee has a medical prescription) in order to solve minor injuries. In addition to being forbidden to use, during the course, any substance that performs energizing and organic restorative functions (reidrat, multivitamins, polyamino, food complexes, etc.), it is recommended that the candidate: - makes no use of anabolic steroids, protein compounds, drugs for weight loss or muscle toning six (6) months before starting the course; - makes no use of drugs for serious allergy problems or infectious disease six (6) months before starting the course; - makes no use of steroids, hormones, amphetamines, diuretics, beta-blockers or related drugs six (6) months before starting the course.

The trainee should prioritize the quality of the gear so that his/her individual performance is not impaired due to the inefficiency of the tools and gear purchased. It is appropriate to point out that the hot and humid climate of the jungle, as well as the stressful training activities deteriorate the material, for example, the effect of oxidation. All of the anchors must be done with canopy lines; karabiners must be made of steel or iron, the use of key chains that mimic karabiners for any purpose is forbidden. The flashlight can be sealed with lenses (red or blue) or insulating tape. The Trainee is allowed to bring the equipment (tactical vest type) and the backpack used in his/her country of origin, which may be used by order of the Course Coordinator, from the second phase of the course (special techniques phase) on. It should be noted that all materials must be olive green, black, green and black camouflage or the camouflaged colors used in his/her country of origin, noting that it is not allowed to use civilian gear. CIGS has some materials to be lend if necessary, however, it is the applicant's responsability to purchase gear required.

In addition to the minimum required amount, it is interesting that there are spare items for replacement in the backpack or load baggage. The items carried by the trainees must be of good quality. It is not compulsory to acquire the aforementioned brands, which were used only as examples and suggestions for candidates.

THE TRAINEES SHOULD WEAR THEIR OWN ORIGINAL UNIFORM. Therefore, they must bring their combat camouflage, physical education, social and presentation uniforms.

It is suggested to remove the hardware of the equipment items and use a velcro or canopy string. If the gear used is provided by CIGS, when returning it, it must have the hardware.

Cases of loss or misplacement of safeguarded materials are subject to inquiry and financial compensation. Magazines may not be waterproofed. The replacement of gear which were damaged in the course is possible according to the Student Support Division availability. At his/her discretion, the trainee may add other items or increase the amount of items to his/her kits.



All ammunition carried in the backpack, must necessarily be sealed in transparent jars, which should be identified according to the Education Division standardization procedures. The backpack should be in perfect waterproofing and buoyancy condition during all phases of the course. It is suggested to use strips of tire chambers to better seal the kits, favoring good waterproofing conditions. Plastic garbage bags must not be used for waterproofing the material because they are not strong enough. Try to close all bags with resistant bands, eg: tire camera straps.

All gear packed in the load bagagge should be very well waterproofed. The trainee, during the course, uses the load baggage to replace his personal material, so it is suggested that this baggage is assembled with great care, as well as all others. Combat uniforms should have no identification of any kind, except the country flag on the left sleeve of the jacket (as used in the country of origin), except the uniform which should be in the Student Support Division locker to be worn in the mobilization and demobilization weeks. The uniforms must not have any changes from the original model (torn pockets, or a jacket only with velcro - without buttons). It is forbidden to fabricate false bottoms or sew material that can help the trainee in buoyancy. It is advisable to strengthen the seams and buttons of all the uniforms, boots and backpack. The boots should have the quick release type of tying and may not have clips on the laces. The shoelace should first go underneath or from inside to outside of the eyelets .

The boots must be softened, thus avoiding blisters. It is not allowed to wear combat boots with zipper. CIGS has a locker for each candidate, measuring 0.5 m x 1.85 m. It is recommended to use a keyless padlock. If it has a key, a copy of the key must be delivered at the Student Support Division.

The backpack sealing can be made with thick transparent bags (0.2 mm), waterproof bags, provided they are black or dark green. Special attention to the positive backpack buoyancy .

h. Candidate actions in CIGS (mobilization week) In order to enroll in the Jungle Operations International Course, the candidate will carry

out the Inicial Physical Aptitude Test (EAFM) and the Health Inspection for Enrollment Purposes (ISM).

The candidate must show the medical examinations made for the initial medical examination, carried out in his/her country of origin. They will be used in the Health Inspection for Enrollment purposes (ISM).

The applicant must present his/her updated international vaccination card, proving to have had the vaccines.

The candidate must present the Trainee Information Form (FIE) filled in (printed and digital versions) upon the arrival at CIGS (it is available at CIGS website, in the link “Estágio Internacional de Operações na Selva”).

The following exams / tests / assessments will be accomplished: - Laboratory tests (hematology and chemical) for the rhabdomyolysis protocol associated with drug tests (anti-doping); - Psychological Tests - Anthropometric assessment, applying the skinfolds protocol proposed by Jackson and Pollock (indicated by the Army Physical Training Research Institute).

4. THE COURSE Currently, the Jungle Operations International Course is divided as below:

5. OTHER REQUIREMENTS a. At the time of presentation in this learning center, at the beginning of the mobilization week, make sure to have the Trainee Information Form, along with a 3x4 photo with military uniform. b. During the Course, the trainee must keep his/her hair cut short (No. 1 hair clipper, including the female segment). In some situations it will be allowed to have the hair out of this pattern, according to the Course Coordinator’s guidelines. c. Self-medication and the use of muscle stimulants are strictly forbidden. d. Cameras, camcorders, tape recorders, cell phones or other electronic gadgets are not allowed during the instruction sessions. e. The use of repellent is required throughout the Course, particularly at dawn and dusk inside the jungle.

f. During the Course, for security reasons, the trainee must not wear necklaces or rings, except the standard nameplate.

g. The trainee who has private vehicle can parked it at CIGS. The location is to be determined by the Student Support Division, after being registered in the 2nd Section of the CIGS.

h. In any situation, the trainee must be able to utter the Jungle Warfare Laws and Jungle Warrior' Prayer and sing The song of the Jungle Warfare Training Center.

6. GUIDELINES TO THE FEMALE SEGMENT

a. In instructions where the use of bathing suit is needed, it will be required to wear a black swimsuit with black lycra shorts over it.

b. In all activities, it is mandatory to wear a black bustier (top) under the combat uniform.
