Special Exhibition

Hong Kong may be a small city, but it was once the world’s largest toy exporter. High-quality, low-cost toys drew international brands to the city looking for factories to carry out production. Meanwhile, local toy manufacturers strived to create their own brands and tapped into overseas markets with premium products, taking Hong Kong-made toys to the world’s arena. When it all started, Hong Kong was virtually unheard of and toys marked “Made in Hong Kong” were even sent back. As Hong Kong gradually built a reputation, however, “Made in Hong Kong” became a guarantee of good quality.

While Hong Kong manufactures toys for children across the globe, the children of Hong Kong play with toys from all over the world. The city’s open market allows all sorts of toys to leave their footprints over the course of history, staging a prime platform to showcase trends and changes in toy manufacture. Upon a closer look at these toys you will find that many have evolved over the years, yet their intrinsic idea of “play” remains timeless, allowing toys to continuously bring joy to children in contemporary ways.

In light of the above, the Hong Kong Museum of History has partnered with the Hong Kong Toys Council and the Toys Manufacturers’ Association of Hong Kong to organize this exhibition. By showcasing over 2,000 (sets of) toys familiar to Hong Kong people or made locally, the exhibition explores the evolution of toys in the past century and the way shrewd industrialists transformed Hong Kong into a toy kingdom. The exhibition also examines how the entertainment industry in the forms of animation, comics, cinema and television globally influences trends and production of toys, and the role in which Hong Kong partook. Moreover, the exhibition illustrates functions of toys beyond fun and play, and the way toys adapted to changing times. The exhibition venue features a play area which surely encourages children to immerse in play and at the same time ponder the meaning of toys.

Coming Attraction

Before entering China proper, the Qing court already attached great importance to the emperor’s birthday celebrations since it was believed that the emperor’s longevity was a testimony of his great virtue and effective rule over the nation. The Emperor’s Birthday, New Year Day and Winter Solstice were the three most important festivals in the Qing palace. The grand celebration of Emperor Kangxi’s sixtieth birthday set the precedent for the birthdays of the later emperors to be magnificently celebrated. Since then, the birthdays of Emperor Qianlong’s mother Empress Dowager Chongqing, Emperor Qianlong, Emperor Jiaqing and Empress Dowager Cixi were also grandly celebrated.

To celebrate the birthdays of the Qing emperors and empress dowagers, all princes and their children, peers, ministers and foreign envoys would present birthday gifts or tributes. The imperial route stretching tens of miles between the imperial garden in the western suburbs and the Forbidden City would be resplendently decorated with lanterns and other festive decors, and punctuated with ornamental awnings. Many temporary operatic stages would be erected in the capital to perform a repertoire of congratulatory operas. Male and female elders throughout the nation would be awarded with bestowals. All these were launched to allow the whole nation to share the festivities of the occasion.

This exhibition is a highlight of the programmes launched to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. 210 items/sets of precious exhibits associated with the grand birthday celebrations of Emperor Kangxi, Emperor Qianlong, Empress Dowager Chongqing, Emperor Jiaqing and Empress Dowager Cixi, from the collection of The Palace Museum in Beijing will be displayed. The exhibits will showcase the ritual system related to the birthday celebrations of the Qing emperors and empress dowagers, and the rich culture of ancient Chinese birthday celebration will also be revealed.

A museum’s collection is its soul. Documenting the deeds of our predecessors and scenes from the past, it gives the museum life. It also serves as a bridge between the museum and the public. We use items donated by members of the public for exhibitions, to conduct research and for education purposes in order to share with visitors the stories behind each artefact. The valuable items donated by generous citizens have made it possible for us to organise a number of exhibitions on local history and culture that tell exciting chapters in the story that belongs to all Hong Kong people. At the same time, artefacts are empirical evidence of a period in time. By investigating and interpreting the artefacts, we can travel through time to get a glimpse into the lives of our predecessors and learn important historical lessons. We use the items in our collection to plan and organise educational activities, such as talks, competitions and workshops, to enable visitors to learn about history from different perspectives and to enhance the public’s interest in history and culture.

Our mission is to collect, preserve, research into, interpret and display artefacts related to the history of Hong Kong and South China. Most of the items in our collection have been donated by enthusiastic members of the public. With your help, these marks of history can be better protected, preserved and passed down to future generations. If you would like to donate an item, please contact the museum by phone (2724 9042), e-mail ([email protected]) or post (please write ‘Artefact Donation’ on the envelope). We will contact you as soon as possible. In addition, we often organise artefact collection activities. Please refer to our website for details.

Renewal of the Permanent Exhibition

As we revamp our permanent exhibition, we are not only adopting innovative ways to present content to visitors, but also showcasing a large number of invaluable artefacts that have never been displayed in public before. Some of these are items from the museum’s collection that may have been overlooked, others are rare treasures gathered from different parts of the world by our colleagues in recent years. By presenting these exhibits in a fresh light, we hope to give the audience a brand new museum-going experience.

One of our recent acquisitions is a silver goblet so valuable that it deserves to be introduced here. The goblet belonged to Scottish doctor Patrick Manson (1844-1922), who had already worked in Taiwan and Xiamen before he arrived in Hong Kong in 1883 to practise medicine. In 1887, he served as chairman of the committee for the founding of the College of Medicine for Chinese, Hongkong, and he was then appointed as the dean of the college on 1 October that year, a post he occupied until February 1889. During his time in Hong Kong, he also imported a herd of cows to provide Hong Kong with fresh milk, a venture that led to the establishment of the Dairy Farm company in Pok Fu Lam. An expert in the field of tropical disease, Manson founded the London School of Tropical Medicine, a constituent college of the University of London, and was knighted after he returned to Britain.

Dr Sun Yat-sen studied medicine at the College of Medicine for Chinese, Hongkong, which was housed in the Alice Memorial Hospital, between October 1887 and July 1892. The college’s medical programme emphasised foundation training in the natural sciences, such as physics, chemistry and botany. As Dr Sun lived in the dormitory on the second floor of the college and there were only a dozen or so students in the college’s first intake, he developed a close relationship with the dean, Dr Manson. This silver goblet was cast in Hong Kong with money donated by Dr Sun and other students of the college, including Kwan King-leung, Lau Sze-fuk, U I-kai, Wong Sai-yan and Sit Nam, and was presented to Manson on 31 March 1889 before he

left Hong Kong for Britain. The list of people who sponsored the gift also included Gan Mah, a pharmacist and commission agent who operated a business at 152 Queen’s Road East, and Chung King-yu, who would later become the first resident practitioner of Western medicine at Tung Wah Hospital. Chung had received his medical training at Viceroy’s Hospital Medical School in Tianjin and worked at the Alice Memorial Hospital after returning to Hong Kong. All the students whose names were on the silver goblet, with the exception of Sit Nam, later completed their training and graduated from the College of Medicine for Chinese, Hongkong.

Dr Sun maintained contact with Manson even after his mentor had left Hong Kong, and the two met in Britain both before and after Dr Sun was kidnapped in London in 1896 and again soon after the outbreak of the 1911 Revolution before he returned to China.

The story behind this silver goblet reveals what an invaluable artefact from Dr Sun’s years as a student in Hong Kong it is. It points to why Dr Sun chose Hong Kong as the base for his revolutionary cause and at the same time reflects the development of medicine and education in Hong Kong in the late 19th century. In view of its immense historical significance, the museum acquired the goblet from Manson’s descendants in Britain, and we now wish to narrate for you another fascinating chapter of the Hong Kong Story through the rich content associated with this stunning exhibit.

Museum Day and Night

Back in 1977, the International Council of Museums (ICOM) designated 18 May as the annual International

Museum Day (IMD) to raise public awareness of the role that museums play in society. The Leisure and

Cultural Services Department has responded to this important appeal since 2001 by organising IMD events in

mid-May every year.

The theme of IMD 2017 focuses on the role of museums as hubs for enhancing relationships between

peoples and benefiting society. It also highlights how a contested history can also be a shared future.

This year, IMD in Hong Kong is scheduled for 13-14 May 2017. Over these two days, visitors will be

admitted free to most of the local participating venues, where a wide range of educational and entertaining

programmes will be held. Come and be inspired!

For details of IMD 2017 in Hong Kong, please check out from the website of Hong Kong Public Museums

Museum goers all have their own unique museum experience. It may come from the encounter of an artwork, a relic that could tell a story or an idea-igniting scientific invention, which is just like a pebble that has been casted into their mind and created beautiful ripples. Maybe it is that kind of resonant effects that attract them to keep coming back to the museums.

The Muse Fest HK, stepping into its 3rd year, thus set “Rippling” as the theme with an aim of linking different public museums and visitors together to keep the vibration extending wider and further. This year, we have gathered the museums, other related offices, heritage centres and art spaces under our management as well as other museum partners in Guangdong, Macao and Hong Kong to bring along a series of thought provoking programmes, including exhibitions, film screenings, talks, concerts, guided tours and workshops. We hope that the festival will create ripples of inspiration to our participants and one day they will be turned into unparalleled ideas and energies.

Programme details will be announced later via the website of the Hong Kong Public Museums.

Starting in the mid-19th century, many Chinese workers were kidnapped or coaxed into the Americas, where they were forced to do hard labour. Some of them ended up in Cuba. The Chinese labourers there had to work more than 16 hours a day. They were underfed and poorly clothed, and some were even tortured by their owners. They were nominally protected by their contracts, but in fact many owners blatantly disregarded the contracts. Even after their contracts expired, the Chinese labourers were not free, as most of them could not afford a ship ticket home, so they were trapped in lives of desperation on the plantations they worked until they died.

In order to present an account of the arduous lives of Cuban Chinese labourers in the 19th century, the museum commissioned Mr Louie Kin-sheun, Honorary Research Fellow in the Hong Kong Institute of Asia-Pacific Studies at The Chinese University of Hong Kong, to conduct research on ten related historical documents in our collection. Based on these documents, combined with other archive materials and invaluable historical images, this book systematically illustrates the background in which Cuban Chinese labourers departed China, how they were treated at work, the hard labour they performed, and their influence on later generations of overseas Chinese people.

Toys are not only children’s playmates; they also bear testimony to changes over time. For Hong Kong, toys have a special meaning because the city was once the world’s largest toy manufacturing hub, with orders coming from all around the world. The volume of toys produced here was astoundingly large, and Hong Kong toys naturally reflected global trends. This catalogue features approximately 330 selected toys that were made in Hong Kong or were well known among Hong Kong people. Using historical images, the book allows readers to reminisce about their childhood, and at the same time narrates the interesting stories behind the different kinds of toys, the glorious history of the Hong Kong toy industry, and how toys have adapted to the new era.

Special Exhibition

The emergence of the role of the war correspondent in the 19th century resulted to a large extent from the competitive newspaper market in the West and the international political situation of that era. Different newspaper groups adopted a variety of strategies and marketing plans to boost their sales and gain a loyal readership. At the same time, the search for economic advantage and the related imperialist expansion by the Western powers brought war and conflict to a number of regions. It was thus a natural development for correspondents to be dispatched to the scene to deliver up-to-date news to readers. Working for The Times of London, William Howard Russell earned renown for his coverage of the Crimean War in 1854, and he is considered to be the first war correspondent in modern history.

The invention of photography and the rapid improvements to photographic equipment brought a new dimension to newspaper reporting, with photographic images proving an ideal means for illustrating news about wars: more immediate than words, they added visual excitement for readers following the progress of conflicts, while at the same time exposing the cruelty and horror of war in sometimes shocking detail.

During the First and Second World Wars, governments imposed restrictions on and censored the reporting of news from the front in order to prevent military intelligence and strategies from being revealed. Despite these constraints and other obstacles, many war correspondents continued, with their keen sense of what was newsworthy and often at the risk of their own lives, to write articles and reports accompanied by visually moving images.

This exhibition reviews from a historical perspective the emergence of war correspondents and the roles they have played in different wars and conflicts, while also featuring stories of local journalists who have covered hostilities in various regions. We hope that the exhibition will provide a better understanding of the work of war correspondents and the efforts they make to bring us the news from places of conflict, and, more importantly, allow visitors to learn more about the cruelty and brutality of war and thus gain a better appreciation of the value of peace.

The renowned local artist Wilson Shieh gleaned from the seven important places Dr Sun Yat-sen visited searching for distinguishable artistic elements, architectural styles and trends of the times. He translated them into historical motifs that he could fuse into his paintings. It was an attempt to approach ‘serious’ history from a more humanistic angle. Visit the Dr Sun Yat-sen Museum and you can learn the footprints of Dr Sun around the world through the artworks!

Permanent Exhibitions

This exhibition aims at explaining how Dr Sun Yat-sen was transformed from an aspiring medical student into a renowned revolutionary leader. Supplemented by a scene setting and historical photographs, the invaluable artefacts will help reconstruct the legendary life of this great Chinese statesman. Visitors will not only be able to get a thorough understanding of his studies and revolutionary campaign, but also understand why Dr Sun admitted that he developed his revolutionary ideas in Hong Kong.

The removal of Dr Sun Yat-sen’s coffin started at midnight on 25 May 1929 from the Temple of Azure Clouds in Xiangshan, Beiping (present-day Beijing) and reached Mount Zijin, Nanjing in the morning of 1 June. Dr Sun Yat-sen’s Mausoleum has been the permanent resting place of this great Chinese statesman. The Museum will broadcast the video programme The Grand Funeral in May and June in the Exhibition Gallery on 1/F to let visitors review this solemn ceremony and learn the respects and farewell by the nationals.

In the Exhibition Gallery on 2/F, a wardrobe is newly displayed. This wardrobe is one of the wedding gifts of Winnie Choa and Ho Sai-kit, Ho Kom Tong’s eldest son, when they married in 1915. The wardrobe was then used in the room of their children (near the present location). After the sale of Kom Tong Hall in 1960, the wardrobe continued to be used by the Ho family. With generous support from Mr Ho Hung-tik, son of Ho Sai-kit, this wardrobe is donated to our Museum. It is now back to her original location that witness time changes.

Apart from going through Dr Sun Yat-sen’s activities in Hong Kong, this exhibition will inspire visitors to probe into an intriguing question, that is, why and how Hong Kong in the late 19th century nurtured someone like Dr Sun, who possessed such progressive revolutionary ideas. With the display of invaluable artifacts, the exhibition also illustrates explicitly the role of Hong Kong as a revolutionary pivot in the late Qing era.

The exhibition hall was built adjacent to the Han tomb. In addition to the display of pottery and bronze wares excavated from the tomb, there are two exhibitions, namely “Lei Cheng Uk Han Tomb” and “A Taste of History: Photographic Exhibition of Han Dynasty Food Culture“. Visitors can have a glimpse of the interior of the tomb through the glass panel at the entrance passage, or the interactive computer model in the gallery.

The Han dynasty (206 BC to AD 220) was a glorious period in China’s history that was also marked by significant developments in Chinese food culture. Various aspects of food culture, such as food production and processing, cooking methods, and usage of utensils, developed rapidly. The conquest and assimilation of the Baiyue and southwestern tribes, as well as communication between the Han and the Western Regions, further enriched Chinese food culture during the Han period. Even today, some foods and eating habits dating from the Han dynasty are still interwoven within the way of life of Chinese people.

By using images of relevant archaeological finds, this exhibition illustrates a variety of aspects of food culture during the Han dynasty, thereby allowing visitors to gain a better understanding of this fascinating subject.
