15年前，有一次，在硅谷創業家也是浙大學長的朱敏辦公室，聽他談創業。朱先生

說：“開發軟件，做軟件企業，我有個景願，或是說是夢想，就是有一天，Bill Gates能請

我坐下來談一談。”

今年2月初，我和攝影師一起去加州首府附近的樂居鎮侯寧的畫室，選展品和拍照，中

午吃飯，侯寧很鄭重地說了句話：“我畫油畫，熱愛油畫，也幾十年了，我也有個夢想，

有一天我的油畫去歐洲展覽，歐洲人對我說：油畫已經在你們中國人手裡了。”

侯寧是我這些年見過的幾乎是唯一的對繪畫有燃燒般激情的畫家。有一次突然在5號公

路邊看到一片春花盛開的果園，他觸電般大叫一聲，然後就支起畫架，在加州的陽光下，

整整七個小時，沒喝一口水，沒吃一口乾糧，沒歇一口氣，當然也沒有任何遮擋。這種全

身心的投入對他不是偶然，也不是偶爾。為此，他被加州陽光灼出了皮膚癌。

1957年侯寧生於上海的一個藝術氛圍濃郁的醫生家庭，很幸運，在動蕩的年代里，他

得到了劉海粟等名師啓蒙和指導。1973年劉海粟在掃弄堂時，侯寧看到他怎麼練書法。侯

寧從海老那裡知道梵高最多是用筆在戳和點擊，只相當於中國書法的提按，而中國書法還

有使轉呢！侯寧也得到陳鈞德一次棒喝：“不要怕顏料往上堆，堆到快掉下來了，你就有

感覺了。”

1980年侯寧從上海美專畢業，3年後留學美國，1989年成為舊金山藝術學院（AAC, SF)

第一位華人油畫教授。1996年辭職，開始做職業畫家，以精能雄闊氣概、深沈動人情韻和

史詩般的敘述能力，成為當今華人油畫家中的異數和令人震驚的一匹黑馬，代表中國油畫

家向世界挑出戰書。

真可惜。盧西安 · 弗洛伊德在2011年去世了。侯寧沒有可能等到盧西安 · 弗洛伊德請他

坐下來談談油畫的那一天。

Fifteen years ago, I was at the Silicon Valley entrepreneur-Zhejiang University alumnus Zhu Min’s

office hearing him talking about entrepreneurship. Mr. Zhu said: “I have a wish, or a dream, on developing

software and running software business, that one day, Bill Gate and I will have a conversation.”

In early February this year, I went to Ning Hou’s studio in Locke, CA near Sacramento with a

photographer to select exhibits and shoot photos. Ning Hou said seriously at lunch: “I paint oil painting

and have been in love with oil painting for decades, I have a dream that one day, my oil paintings exhibit in

Europe, European people will say: oil paining is in the hands of Chinese.”

Ning Hou is the only artist that I’ve seen in these years who has burning passion for oil painting.

Once he saw a blooming orchard along highway 5, he shouted as if got electric shock and set up his easel

immediately. In the burning sun of California, he painted continuously for seven hours, without a sip of water,

a bite of food, a break and any cover. This kind of devotion to him is not accidental, nor is it occasionally.

Because of this, he was burned to skin cancer by the California sunshine.

Ning Hou was born in a doctor’s family with artistic atmosphere in Shanghai in 1957. Luckily, he was

taught and guided by masters such as Liu Haisu in the turbulent years. In 1973, when Liu Haisu was sweeping

the streets, Ning Hou saw his way in practicing calligraphy. Ning Hou leaned from Master Liu that Van Gogh

used poking and pointing mostly, comparing to the technique of lifting and pressing in Chinese calligraphy.

However, there is also twisting in calligraphy! Ning Hou also received an enlightenment from Chen Junde:

“Don’t be afraid of piling up pigments. When the pigments are almost falling off, you’ll feel it.”

Ning Hou graduated from Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts in 1980. Three years later, he came to study

in the U.S. He became the first Chinese oil professor at the Academy of Art University of San Francisco. He

resigned in 1996 and became a professional oil painter. The vigorous and deeply touching spirit of his painting

and his ability of epic narrative making him a maverick among contemporary oil painters. He is sending out a

challenging message to the world on behalf of Chinese oil painters.

It’s a pity that Lucian Freud died in 2011. Ning Hou didn’t have a chance to have a conversation on

oil painting with him.

加州州政府大廈、州長辦公室、參議員辦公室等多處重要的大型公共場所都

分別展示並收藏有候寧的作品。

1996～2000年 與紐約畫廊進行了一系列的合作。

1996～2013年 與河路藝術畫廊（River Road Art gallery）合作展出個人作品。

2000年 當時的加州州長Peter Wilson 收藏侯寧作品。現任副州長Arron Shuwards本人

也收藏了候寧作品。

2000年起 侯寧以私人導師身份指導過很多美國藝術專業學生學習繪畫，其學生作品也

在美國不同地區享有一定的聲譽，比如Susan Z、 Marti Walker、Shelly SM、

Jan Newell,、Jesse Raspberry等等。

2002年 加州麥克尼博物館（McHeony museum of Art and History）舉辦候寧大型個人

畫展，歷時三個月，反響驚人。當時加州排名第一的政治遊說公司將展覽的

三分之一作品買入並收藏。

受邀為美國加州美術家協會當藝術品評判評委。

2006年 美國藝術主流雜誌《太平洋視線》報道了候寧的作品及其藝術態度。

加州州政府所在地沙加緬度地區有名的私人收藏館EFG private collection 永久

收藏候寧作品—《報紙》。

2006～2008年 與洛杉磯現代藝術畫廊（Modern Hall Gallery）開始合作，並舉辦個展。該

個展引起好萊塢名流的關注。著名電影導演Hiu Welson（拍攝Police Academy

系列劇導演）特邀候寧為他畫個人肖像。

2007年 美國著名的《時代週刊》刊登了一篇關於候寧和樂居小鎮的報道。

2007年3月 舊金山灣區視角（Insight Bay Area）專訪候寧。

2008年 在弗羅里達州的Generation Gallery舉辦個人畫展。其作品被荷蘭、意大利、

法國等歐洲藝術品收藏愛好者所收藏。

美國主流全國性電視台KVIE拍攝並播放了侯寧的人物專訪—《候寧的精神

世界》。

2010年 加州著名藝術家第九屆卡梅爾藝術節（Ninth Annual Carmel Art Festival）

特邀侯寧老師攜帶五幅作品參加藝術節，其中三副作品被藝術館（James J.

Rieser Fine Art）收藏。

2012～2015年 每年都收到加州中央山谷商界聯盟邀請參加年會藝術邀請展。其作品被商界

精英廣為收藏。

2014年 馬蘭李藝術館（Marlan Lee Fine Art）展出候寧系列作品。

2015年 為斯坦福大學東亞圖書館創作永久收藏的油畫作品。

2016年 瘋狂設計藝術館（Crazy by Design）展出侯寧油畫作品。

侯寧藝術年表

習畫及任教歷程1957年1月6日出生，五歲開始習畫。

1973年 開始學習油畫，在中國學習期間曾師從劉海粟、周宗琪、陳俊德、丁國佩、

顏文良等。

1977～1980年 於中國上海美術專科學校學習。

1983～1987年 於美國舊金山藝術學院學習，師從Jack Scott（美國抽象畫家）、Raffia Lee

（英國畫家）、Toms Marsh（美國雕刻家） 和Ron Yang（舊金山藝術學院雕

刻系主任）。

1989年 受聘於舊金山藝術學院任教，成為該藝術學院有史以來首位被聘教授繪畫

的華人教授。

1989～1996年 在舊金山藝術學院教授高級繪畫、抽象畫、當代寫實主義、人體解剖以及美

術史等課。

2008～2013年 任美國太平洋大學客座教授。

專業成就1988年 參加加州畫家作品展覽，獲得最佳作品獎。

參加聖何塞微小油畫作品比賽，獲得優秀作品獎。

1989年 參加加州藝術家協會舉辦的藝術大賽，獲得第一名大獎。

1989年年末 於加州Walnut Creek, Concord, Fairfield聯合舉辦的藝術巡展中獲得最具潛力作

品獎。

1988～1996年 於舊金山舉辦過三次個人畫展。其中一百五十多幅作品短期被收藏家購空。

收藏購買者多為畫廊老闆、舊金山名流及其他專業人士。

1990年 兩幅作品—California Poppy 和Black Slough以及專業藝術評論分別刊登在

國家級藝術雜誌—American Antique 和 Art in America。

1991～1996年 分別與舊金山三個著名畫廊—San Francisco Bermony gallery, San Francisco

Maxwell Gallery和Connects Gallery聯合舉辦三次大型個人專題畫展。舊金山

觀察者（San Francisco Examiner)等雜誌分別對這三次展覽進行了報道。

1992年 受胡根博物館（Haggun Museum)特邀舉辦個人畫展。

其後，加州政要開始關注侯寧作品。其作品《地球之鹽》（Salt of the Earth）

被眼光極為挑剔的Crock Museum永久收藏。該博物館的首席藝術評論家對候

寧的作品進行了非常詳細的藝術評論，稱《地球之鹽》為「近二百年來最佳

作品」。它奠定了候寧作品在美國藝術作品上的專業地位。

1996年 美國主流雜誌《鄰居》（Neighborhood）在顯要位置介紹了候寧的風景

畫。針對其舊金山題材的風景畫作出了詳細的介紹和高度評價。同年，在

Maxwell Gallery San Francisco常年展出的十一幅作品被畫廊老闆買斷並永久
