If you go to Cape Breton, it is easy to see the influence the Scottish people have had on the island. This can be seen in the music, dance, songs, religion, traditions/customs and also in the place names all over the island.

After more than 200 years, people in Cape Breton still speak Gaelic and go to ceilidhs and dances.

The people see themselves as Canadians but as Scottish/Scots too.

58 Ceumannan 2 Freagairtean

Eacarsaich 7b

1. Chaidh mi a ahmar-snàmh. I went to the swimming pool

Correct answer:

Chaidh mi dhan amar-snàmh.

Reason:

the swimming pool = an t-amar-snàmh. Therefore, as swimming pool has a definite article (the) before it you must use dhan (to the) to say to the swimming pool. Also amar-snàmh cannot be lenited (no h can be added after the first letter) because it begins with a vowel.

2. Thèid Dòmhnall dhan Muile. Donald will go to Mull

Correct answer:

Thèid Dòmhnall a Mhuile.

Reason:

Mull = Muile. Has no definite article so you should use a (to) to say you are going to Mull. Muile begins with the letter m, which can be lenited. Therefore the letter h must be added after the m.

3. A bheil Sìne a’ dol a a’ bhùth? Is Jane going to the shop?

Correct answer:

A bheil Sìne a’ dol dhan bhùth?

Reason:

the shop = a’ bhùth. Therefore, the shop has a definite article and so dhan (to the) must be used.

4. Chaidh mi a an Fhraing. I went to France.

Correct answer:

Chaidh mi dhan Fhraing.

Reason:

France = an Fhraing has a definite article and therefore dhan must be used instead of a

The definite article an is no longer needed as it is included in the word dhan, therefore it is removed.

5. Chan eil Seòras a’ dol dhan shtèisean. George is not going to the station.

59 Ceumannan 2 Freagairtean

Correct answer:

Chan eil Seòras a’ dol dhan stèisean.

Reason:

dhan is used correctly because the station has a definite article. However, words beginning with st cannot be lenited and so the h should be removed.
