Following the stimulating reflections and debates which took
place at the KISMIF International Conference Underground Music
Scenes and DIY Cultures, held at Porto between the 8th and the
11th July 2014, we come now to challenge the participants and
invite them to the submission of papers in the different study-
areas regarding music and cultural scenes, communities,
identities and urban cultures.
We will focus in this special dossier in the undeniable connection between music and artistic scenes and
its urban context. Papers should discuss the construction and development of music and artistic scenes
around the world, and their role in the collective construction of identities and memory. Approaching
the city as context and catalyzer for the scenes, themes such as the following, among others, are
clearly welcomed: youth identities, artifacts and their spatial inscription; underground economies and
geographies of contemporary creative cities; careers and alternative paths for musical and artistic
intervention in the city; urban intervention projects focused on arts and music; urban atmospheres and
cultural identities.
This call expects to correspond to the central axis of development of the social sciences concerned with
arts, creativity and social innovation, evidencing how musical and artistic scenes play a key role in the
creation of collaborative methodologies and strategies and in the enhancement of participation and
empowerment enabling the generation of value and social innovation in the contemporaneity.
Main Themes addressed: Music, identity and collective urban memory; Music, youth cultures and cities;
DIY, underground and territorialized creative dynamics in the urban space; Arts, creativity and social
innovation; Arts, urban cultures, communities and empowerment; Arts, civic participation and youth
integration.
A selection of papers will be submitted as a thematic dossier to the Journal Cidades Comunidades e
Territrios (http://cidades.dinamiacet.iscte-iul.pt/index.php/CCT). Any of these articles, after pre-
selection by the coordinators of the thematic dossiers, will be subject to the normal refereeing process
