Throughout his life whether as a soldier, student, author or professor Michael Harris has always expected to be the best at whatever he put his mind to. And on Oct. 22, when he will make the title of chancellor of Indiana University Kokomo official, that will continue. I look at this campus as really the economic engine for north central Indiana, Harris said. We serve plus-minus 14 counties in north central Indiana and really we are going to be a major factor in the transformation of the region because I believe that this transformation from an economy that is primarily based on manufacturing and agriculture is going to continue to transform to an economy of knowledge and innovation. We are going to be major players in meeting that coalition because weve got to build a coalition between business, government, not-for-profits and education, which is Indiana University Kokomo. Harris came to Kokomo after serving as provost and vice president for Academic Affairs and professor of public policy at Kettering University from July 2007 until being hired by IU Kokomo. He also served in the same positions at Ferris State University from July 2004 to May 2007. He began his administrative duties at Eastern Michigan University. I also had a great provost at Eastern Michigan University, a provost of 17 years, Ron Collins, who I learned from a lot, he said. Ron, one day called me into his office, and I was a little assistant professor, and he said to me that he wanted me to get into administration. I said, I really enjoy teaching. He said to me, give me an example of a class you love to teach. I said public policy. He asked, how many students do you have in that class? I said 25. He then said, Well, how about you become the director of undergraduate studies at Eastern Michigan University where you could influence 19,000 undergrads, instead of the 25 who you teach. 2. IU Kokomo is on the move with new chancellor - Kokomo Perspective: Local News http://kokomoperspective.com/news/local_news/iu-kokomo-is-on-the-move-with-new-chancellor/article_b8442d7e-bb83-11df-88ee-001cc4c03286.html[1/25/2014 11:03:46 AM] and Im writing a book, would it be OK if we talked in a half of a year? He said yes. After Harris came back from the sabbatical, he became the director of undergraduate studies and soon became the associate to the provost. From him, I learned everything I know about higher education, Harris said of Collins. Harris began as an assistant professor in 1994 at Eastern Michigan and by May 2000, he was the associate provost. He came back to Indiana, in part, because he received his doctorate in public policy from Indiana University Bloomington in 1993. I had a few opportunities and I decided that Indiana University Kokomo was the best place for me to go for three reasons, Harris said. His three reasons were the leadership of IU president Michael McRobbie and where the university is heading, which he called a national model. Second, he attended IU and has a heart and passion for the university. Third, Kokomos campus was an excellent place with an excellent faculty; with his skills, he thought it would be a good fit, he said. It was good to come back home, he said. Just as he began his reign as chancellor, IU Kokomos full-time students reached 70 percent of the total student body, an all-time high. Also, more than 3,000 students are enrolled for the fall semester. The school that has had the most growth is the School of Nursing. For the fall enrollment, the school has grown by 19.5 percent to 630 students, as compared to 527 students at the same time in 2009. The IU Kokomo School of Nursing is the third largest public Bachelor of Science in nursing program in the state. They grew because theres a need, Harris said. Theres an exceptional faculty and staff here with great leadership. I believe we have a first-class school of nursing. You cant get a better education than here. The IU Kokomo campus is on the move to become more relevant than ever and more efficient, he said. Its called world-class faculty, Harris said. Close to home. On the move. We are a campus on the move. We are moving. The region is moving. We are moving together. The entire region with us is on the move. On Aug. 2, the campus moved 39 people, nine different departments, including the chancellors office, within one day. We reorganized to where people are to make it much more functional, he said. This was symbolic. We got together for a breakfast, we got together for a lunch and we moved the entire campus in one day. One of the challenges of a regional campus is retaining students. Many students transfer to other universities throughout the state after they complete their prerequisite classes. If theres one thing I can tell anyone is go to college and graduate, he said. Now I believe that if you are from this region, you have a huge advantage of being here. Why? Because we are a public school, a regional comprehensive school, that provides you the environment of a private school. If they transfer and they are successful, good luck. Im just saying, why would you want to? You are way better off staying here and graduating. Harris said that nationally about 67 percent of college students transfer to another school. My advice to my three sons was wherever you start your undergraduate, you stay there and you graduate there, he said. If there is one message I could send to the youth of the area, come to Indiana University Kokomo, begin here and graduate. You will have an environment that is a public school as good as you get at a private school where you Public Arrest Records ITT Tech - Official Site VA Loans for Veterans Master Business Analysis villanovau.com/BusinessAnalysis Prepare for Industry Certification & Earn a Master Certificate Online 2014 Phlebotomy Schools Online MBA University Death & Obituary Records 3. Relatively, you can get an exceptional education close to home with a really added value. At 11 a.m. on Oct. 22, Harris will be officially installed as chancellor, but he said that day is not going to be about him. It will be about transforming the region through innovation and education. Typically its a very traditional dress in 14th century gowns, he said. What we are doing is very, very different. I didnt want to do the traditional one because we want that to be the point to where we are charting the future as we transform the region through innovation and education. The installation will bring together business people and area political representatives, he said. There will be displays of what different companies, counties and cities do and there will be a discussion of how the north central Indiana region can get together by building a coalition, he said. The world is moving, he said. The competition is not between Howard County and Cass County. The competition is between north central Indiana and Chongqing, China. And believe me, Chongqing, China, is moving fast and weve got to move faster if we want to be able to promise our kids and our grandchildren the American dream. The American dream is to have a better future than now. Harris was born in Johannesburg, South Africa, and his family later immigrated to Israel. He was raised on an agricultural commune in Israel and later served three years in the Israeli Defense Forces and rose to the rank of major in the Special Forces, where he worked in intelligence. After his military service, he received his Bachelor of Arts in economics-business administration in 1982 from Bar Ilan University in Israel. He later received a Masters of Arts in public policy-public management and budgeting from Tel Aviv University in 1986. He then received a doctorate in public policy from Indiana University in 1993. He is also a graduate of the Harvard Graduate School of Education's Institute for Educational Management and the Management Development Program. He has been married to his wife, Tali, for 31 years.
