International Residence (a three-minute walk from Gumyoji Station on the Yokohama Municipal Subway Line), Tokiwadai International Residence (on YNU Tokiwadai campus) International Student House (a three-minute walk from Gumyoji Station on the Yokohama Municipal Subway Line), and Minesawa International Student Dormitory (a five-minute walk from the Tokiwadai campus).

Applications for Ooka International Residence and Tokiwadai International Residence can be filed via the university website. For applications for Minesawa International Student Dormitory and International Student House, please read the application guidelines available at the Student Support Division and its website ( https://www.gakuseisupport.ynu.ac.jp ) in around early January and in early July.

2 Dormitories Provided by Yokohama City Yokohama City provides housing in Yokohama International Student House (Tsurumi-

ku,Yokohama). The maximum length of residence is one year. Annual extension is available in certain cases. There are monthly residence fees and charges.

New residents are admitted only once a year, in April. For more details, please refer to the application guidelines distributed by the Student Support Division and its website ( https://www.gakuseisupport.ynu.ac.jp ) in December. Only full-time undergraduate and graduate students are eligible to apply. Residents are selected by Yokohama City through a paper screening.

3 Company DormitoriesPrivate corporations have set aside rooms in their employee dormitories for housing international

students. The Corporate Friendship Network for International Students enables international students to stay in company dormitories, thereby providing them with stable housing and financial assistance while at the same time furthering mutual understanding through daily interaction between employees and students.

There is not a fixed number of company dormitory rooms offered to the university. Rather, the University receives requests to recommend applicants as rooms become available. Vacancies will be posted on the bulletin board and Student Support Division website. Only students studying without scholarships are eligible to apply. Certain restrictions may apply from any related companies.

4 Private ApartmentsThe University Co-op (University Hall, Tel: 045-331-5217) offers introductions and assistance

regarding private apartments. Assistance is also offered through real estate companies. In order to move into a private apartment, you will need to pay a security deposit, key money, brokerage fee, and the first month’s rent. Thus, it is necessary to have enough money to cover four to six times the monthly rent when signing the lease.

In addition, you generally need a guarantor in order to rent a private apartment in Japan. If you do not have a guarantor, please make use of private rent guarantee companies.

※Maintenance Charges When Leaving Kanagawa Prefectural HousingIf you move out Sasayama-danchi, Kanagawa Prefectural housing, you must call the Yokohama

branch office of the Kanagawa Land Building Maintenance Association (Tel:045-933-0591) at least within 15 days before leaving.

Also, you must pay maintenance charges (around 100,000 yen) such as for replacing tatami mats and fusuma doors in accordance with the pledge you have signed regardless of the length of your residence.

If you fail to pay maintenance charge before leaving Japan, you would be billed for the charge through your home country’s university. Furthermore, it may cause trouble for other international students of YNU who wish to move in the housing of Kanagawa Prefecture.
