Another season withPhiladelphia AGO!

It’s hard to believe that we have reached the end of another season ofAGO activities! As always, the past year has provided our chapter mem-bers with a variety of opportunities for growth, enrichment, and fellow-

ship. As members of the Philadelphia chapter, I hope you have been ableto take advantage of some of these opportunities. Being one of thenation’s largest AGO chapters, located in a city rich in culture, we have alot to offer!

Behind the scenes, our chapter benefits from an incredible amount of activ-ity, with individual members and small groups putting in countless hourshelping to see to it that things run smoothly. Your elected officers on theExecutive Committee meet monthly to keep tabs on the chapter’s opera-tions and to make important decisions on behalf of the chapter member-ship. The Program Committee, chaired by our Sub-Dean, is a highly moti-vated and dedicated group which capably tends to all the details of our pro-gram offerings throughout the season, including our annual JanuaryJumpstart. Several of our chapter’s committees meet on an as-neededbasis to accomplish specific tasks under their committee’s domain:Communications, Endowment, and Nominating. In recent months theArchives Committee, Education Committee, and Finance Committee havebeen “re-populated” with new leadership and fresh ideas. In addition, some of our officers meet with related organizations, representing the AGOin reaching common goals and projects: Girard College Organ Guild,Organ Historical Society, and Kimmel Center Organ Day.

Individual chapter members tend to specific areas of the chapter’s opera-tions: Chaplain, Competitions, Examinations, Photographer, PositionsAvailable, Professional Concerns, Tuesday Noon Organ Recitals,Crescendo Advertising, Crescendo Calendar of Events, and Webmaster.Vital to our chapter’s communications are the many people who work toproduce, edit, publish, and circulate our monthly newsletter, theCrescendo.

This is an astounding number of people who volunteer their time to con-tribute to the successful operations of our chapter! As Dean of your chap-ter, and on behalf of the chapter membership, I humbly offer thanks to eachof these volunteers. If you are a member who is not currently involved insome facet of the chapter’s operations, I hope you will say an enthusiastic“yes” when asked to volunteer. Better yet, be in contact with one of theofficers to let us know how you would like to help the chapter.

As we enter into the summer season, I wish each of our members a sum-mer that provides you with what you need, whether it is rest and relaxation, renewal, further education, travel, or just some more time with your fami-lies. For now, our chapter will take a much deserved break from regularmeetings, newsletter publication, and other regular activities, as we gear upwith renewed vigor for our exciting 2016-2017 season!

MAY 2016 VOLUME LXXVIII, NO. 105

We read in the Bible in thebook of Ecclesiates that“For everything there is

a season, and a time for everymatter under heaven.”

This is the time for me to resignfrom my position as chaplain. Ibelieve this is my 30th articleand my final as Chaplain. Thearticles have often come fromwhere I was, at that time.

Today I am at a place where I need to make changes. Iam looking for a call which will necessitate a move. Mypartner John’s health has been more challenging andtakes more of my time. Thus I need to make changesand one of them is to resign as your chaplain.

I began as chaplain at the invitation of former Dean EthelGeist. My role has been to install officers and write arti-cles for the Crescendo. It has been a privilege to serveyou.

So this season as your chaplain ends under Dean DavidFurniss, who invited me to participate in an event a num-ber of years ago.

Our chapter has grown in many ways since I began serv-ing as your chaplain under very capable leadership. I willcontinue to pray for our leadership as they continue toguide this chapter into the future.

God bless each and every one of you.

Chaplain Bruce

CHAPLAIN’S CORNER

You have installed many of our officers intotheir positions of serving the chapter. Yourfaithfulness and dedication to bringing usinspiration through your Chaplain's Cornermessages is much appreciated.

Blessings upon you, Bruce, as you journey forward into your new adventures!

Beginning this fall, our chapter will be offeringmonthly Saturday morning sessions onImprovisation and Service Playing. This opportu-

nity is open to all members for a nominal fee. Based onthe feedback from those of you who attended theImprovisation session at our last January Jumpstart, there are a number of our members who would like tobenefit from some guidance in these important skills.

Jeffrey Brillhart will be the instructor for the advancedgroup at Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church on September17, October 15, November 12 and December 3. I willcoach the basic service playing group at St. PaulLutheran Church in Ardmore on September 10, October8, November 12 and December 17. Each session willbegin at 9:00 am.

Advanced Improvisation session will focus on develop-ing the improviser’s harmonic language and solid struc-tural framework for “spontaneous composition.”Rondo,Song Form, Sonata Allegro, Versets, etc. will beexplored for use in liturgical settings. The classes willuse Jeffrey Brillhart’s improvisation textbook, “Breaking

Free” (available on Amazon.com)and a draft copy of his secondtextbook, “A World of Possibilities:Masterlessons inImprovisation.”(Copies of thatbook will be provided).

At my first session on BasicService Playing in September, Iwould like for participants to focuson hymn playing. More precisely, we are going to dis-cuss tempo, registration, phrasing, and legato issues. Iwill select five widely known hymn tunes for the partici-pants to choose from. They will be asked to prepareand play one of them. At the second session in Octoberthe attendees will have the chance to present theprogress they made within a month. Moreover we willwork on creating hymn introductions. The goal is to cre-ate an introduction which will be suitable in tempo, meter and character to the previously learned hymn. The topics for November and December will remainopen, giving the opportunity to address participant’sparticular needs.

The participation fee is $40 for the semester (four ses-sions), or $15 per session (at the door), payable to thePhiladelphia Chapter. After successful registration I willreach out to the participants with more details.

MAY 2016 VOLUME LXXVIII, NO. 1015TALE PIPES

Mary Elizabeth Campbell, CAGO, [email protected]

Put your feet up a while, maybe take time to smile,

I’ll share organ musings, an assortment of pew zings,

Volunteer choirs, many folks lifers, In spite of organs with regular cyphers,

Loveable singers, the not quite sopranos, Trying, VERY trying, ‘til organ crescendos…

Church politics are one alto’s pure passion, And Latin, a tenor feels, isn’t in fashion.

Sadly there often just aren’t enough basses, The guys could use just a few more faces,

Demonic ventilation system shuffles my pages, As if unseen hands flew into rages,

One singer says, “I’m middle aged for this group – That’s 72, just keeping you in the loop!”

Some instruments have temperaments du jour, ranging from passable to flagrantly poor,

I enjoy the variety from country to city, and am pleased to no longer be on a committee!

WHERE  AM I?

with many thanks to Andy Heller, our Tuesday Noon coordinator. A View from the Sub Bench

The photo this month is a bit of a give away, taken at a recent chapter event.

Please consider sending in your photos for next season – our next issue will be

September, so the due date is August 1st.

Your creativity is appreciated!
