NOSB: Objectives & ImpactsNOSB was initiated in 1998 to:

• Support International Year of the Ocean and promote ocean literacy

• Stimulate student interest in the ocean sciences

• Give students opportunities to examine marine science as a field of study and possible career path

• Help educators use the oceans as an interdisciplinary vehicle for teaching biology, chemistry, geology, physics, and mathematics

Competition Format

• Competition is made up of rounds

• One round consists of a:– 6 minute buzzer half (no 

more than 10 questions)– 2 team challenge questions– 2+ minute break– 6 minute buzzer half

Question FormatThree Types of Questions:

• Toss Up (multiple choice; answered individually by person who buzzed in)

• Bonus (short answer or multiple choice; team can discuss, but answer must come from the captain)

• Team Challenge Questions (TCQs; a team effort, but the captain turns in the answer sheet for the team)

Types of Responses from StudentsOnce a question is read by the moderator, the students can respond 

in three ways, they can either:

• Wait to be recognized by the moderator before answering• Interrupt the reading of the question, be recognized, then answer.• Blurt out the answer before being recognized.

• Only the first answer counts!

*If a team answers a toss‐up question correctly, they receive a bonus question worth six points

• 12 Teams• Three divisions of 4 teams• Three Round Robin matches (divisional play) before lunch

• Single‐elimination tournament after lunch– Seeding will take place during lunch

• Teams must have four players• Team composition must remain static (cannot change between “A” and “B” team)

• Toss‐up questions must be answered by giving the letter (W, X, Y, or Z) and/or EXACTLY as it is written in the question book

• No calculators, phones, recording devices• No leaving the room during post‐TCQ break• No challenges to TCQ grading

2014 Competition Rules/Changes• Rule 10: Room Runners take TCQs to Judges Room for grading (changed from Sci Judge + Room Runner)

• Rule 14: Moderators will provide correct answer to all toss‐up and bonus questions if neither team gets the question correct.

• Rule 65: A challenge will not be considered unless the team member is first recognized by the Moderator. Must occur BEFORE next toss‐up or bonus or TCQ portion or before the Moderator has announced the end of the match

TCQ Grading Room:Team Challenge Question graders

Moderator• Reads the questions to the teams.

• Verbally recognizes the team member before they respond.

• Announces whether answer is correct or incorrect.

Reads answer if incorrect

• Must be very familiar with the rules and the flow of the game.

Science Judge

• Makes rulings on the acceptability of answers

• Controls the buzzer system

• Responds to challenges made by students

Rules Judge• Ensures all officials are performing 

their roles correctly• Keeps close eye on scoring• Watches the audience for signaling• Responsible for room set up and 

breakdown

Scorekeeper

Maintains a tally of points for both teams

• Toss up questions = 4 pts

• Bonus questions = 6 pts

• Team Challenge Questions = up to 20 pts

TimekeeperKeeps track of 2 clocks:

• Game clock for buzzer halves (6 minutes) and TCQs (2‐5 minutes)

• Stopwatch for buzzing in (5 seconds) and answering questions (3 seconds).  For bonus questions: 20 seconds to answer.

Room Runner

• Runs TCQs to the grading room.

• Picks up new questions from Bay Bowl Central between rounds.

• Answers any room needs.

Team Challenge Question Grader• Sequestered

- Hospitality Room in AM- Windjammer in PM

• Evaluates all TCQ answers using a provided rubric and some science savvy 

• Their scores cannot be challenged

• Patience

What’s Next? 

Attend at least two face‐to‐face training sessions (At least one session for volunteers across the Bay 

Bridge – Jan 22, 7pm at COL Office in DC)

Become familiar with the competition rules (no matter your job!) and your specific job duties
