Startedmerelyasawoodenpassagewayandslowlycreatedintoaclusterofhousesperchabovetheseashoresbystiltsabovetheneverendingshiftingtides,thiscommunalsiteislockedinatimezonebyitself,disregardingtheurbandevelopmentthatistakingplacearoundit.

Penangbeingaheritagetownisrichwithattractivehistoricsitesandculturalevents,butthisinimitablesettlementstandsoutasatrulyuniquelivingheritage.TheChewJettyisactuallyawholesettlementofwoodenhousesbuiltonsiltsandthenameChewisthesurname(thefirstname)oftheresidencesandthatswherethenamewasderived.Migrantsfamilieswiththissurnamewouldlivetogetherinthisarea.

TheseclustersofwoodenhouseswerebuiltbytheChinesepoorimmigrantswhoworkneartheportduringthenineteencentury.TheseimmigrantsmigratedfromthesoutheasterncoastofChina,knownastheFujianProvinceoverhereduetothehardshiptheyfaceintheirhomelandduringthatera.Latertheybroughttheirfamiliesoverandmadethiswaterfronttheirhome.TheChewJettyisstillhometohundredsofpeoplelivinginthisareatodaybutmanyhavechangedtheirsocialandeconomiclifestyle.

Thejettywasinitiallyrowsofplanksupportedbystiltsconstructedasplatformforpassengersembarkinganddisembarkingfromtheboatstotheshoresandviceversa.Lateron,theseplatformswerejoinedtogethertobecomeajetty.Asoftoday,notmanypeopleknowthereasonwhythesewoodenhouseswerebuildonstiltsbythesideofthejetty.Furthermore,housesbuiltonstiltswasnotacommonpracticeintheseimmigrantshomelandbutmoreoftheSouthEastAsiaadaptation.Asmorehouseswerebuilt,woodenwalkwaysandalleysbranchoutfromthemainjettytobecomeaclusterofhomefortheseimmigrantsandtheirfamilies.

thenarrowandtwistedwalkwayusedtodayareoftheoriginalones.Thejettyhousesmaylookoldanddepletedbutsurprisingverycleanandtidyinside.Waterandelectricitywasinstalledforthemin1954.Youabletofindevenawellstockgrocerystore,andmosthouseshasmodernamenitieslikeairconditions,television,fridgesaproofthatmodernizationcanjuxtaposewithtraditionallifestyle.

ForvisitorstoPenang,thissiteisafascinatingandmustnotbemissedoutintheitinerary.Onestepontothewoodenwalkwaysyouwillbeabletofeeltheambiencefromthesurroundingthatexudesasenseofnostalgiainthisuniquewaterbornecommunity.Yougetapipoftheseabelowyouasyouwalkalongthewoodenplatformthroughthegapsinthefloorboard.Walkingfurtherdowntowardstheseawillleadyoutoaworldthatishalfforgottenandserene.Justonyourleftyouwillseeacontrastingsight,themodernhustlingandbustlingPenangharbour.

Visitorsshouldcomeandwitnesstheclanreligiousactivitieswhicharecolourfulanddeepwithtraditionalceremonies.ThemostelaborateandgrandcelebrationistheworshipofJadeEmperor(SkyGod)ontheeightdayoftheChineseNewYear.Everyresidentwouldpreparetheirofferingoffoodbylyingthemjointlyona50meterlongalterbythesideofthemainroad.

Thealterissurroundedbymanyhugedecoratedandcolourfulgiantjosssticks.Thetablesidesaretiedtogetherwithsugarcaneandredorigamipaperhangingfromthesugarcanestem.Atthestrokeofmidnightfireworksareletoff,turningthestreetintoamagicalsight.
