The state of Chhattisgarh comes under the Rice-agro-climatic zone. The main population of the state almost 80% consists of rural people.

The people living in these rural areas mainly depend upon agriculture and agriculture based small industries.

The economy of the state is mainly based on Chhattisgarh agriculture. The agriculture sector contributes mainly up to 38% to the State’s Net Domestic

Product.

For the overall development of the state irrigation is the prime need of the state and therefore the state government has given top priority to the development of

irrigation potential.

The irrigation potential has now been raised to 1.844 Million hectares at the end of March 2012 which is 33.15% of gross sown area.

The principal agricultural crops of Chhattisgarh Agriculture are rice, paddy, wheat, maize and oil seeds. Cauliflower, cabbage, tomato, radish, carrot, beat are some of

the vegetables grown in the state.

Agricultural operation is divided into two crop seasons- Kharif and Rabi. The Kharif season starts from the third week of May and lasts till the end of October

followed by the Rabi season.

Chhattisgarh Agriculture farmers must be provided with ample supply of raw materials for the establishment of Agro based industries. This stable and regular supply of agricultural produce provides adequate opportunity for marketing and

food processing industries.
