　Chi-Shan Performing Arts Studio (CSPAS) comes from Liujia district, Tainan, in the south area of Taiwan and is a much localised performing group involving artists locally trained and nurtured. Led by Chi-tzu Lin, the Artistic Director, CSPAS preserves beautiful homeland legacy with inno-vative performing arts. CSPAS has integrated music, ethnic dance, folk art, and traditional diabolo skills into a unique theatre performance.

　Besides frequent performance in Ta iwan, CSPAS has successfu l ly brought the stories and spirits of the land to audience of international fes-tivals. In 2015, Chi-Shan was invited to perform in Hungary International Festival with great honour and join their parade. CSPAS’ diabolo perfor-mance, lion dance, and Taiwanese folk dance impressed international audience profoundly.

2017 BRISBANEINTERNATIONAL ARTS FESTIVALto celebrate Harmony Week

The Journey to the West　The performance “The Journey to the West” is an inno-vative and unique creation adapted from the Chinese clas-sic same name novel. The novel was published in the 16th century during the Ming dynasty and attributed to Wu Cheng'en. It is one of the Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese literatures. The original story narrates a pilgrimage of the monk Xuanzang in an ancient time. He travelled to the "Western Regions" to obtain Buddhist sacred texts and returned after many attempts and much suffering.

　Two of the major characters in the performance are Monkey King (or Wukong) and Pigsy (or Bajei). Monkey King’ s childlike playfulness is a huge contrast to his cunning mind. Pigsy was once an immortal Marshal of the Heav-enly Canopy but banished into the mortal world due to drinking too much during a celebration of gods and attempted to flirt with the moon goddess Chang'e. They are two powerful disciples who aid and protect Xuanzang on his journey. In return, the disciples will receive enlight-enment and forgiveness for their sins once the journey is done.

　Chi-Shan Performing Arts Studio’s “The Journey to the West” integrated the story with music, drama, dance, and diabolo skills. This production involves various artistic disci-plines to create a dramatic stage entertainment full of adventure and humour.

　Founded in 2011, B &W Piano Tribe is a group of pianists who wish to share their thoughts and feelings through the music to their audience. They are musicians saturated in music with their lives, and have a strong determination in demonstrating the excellence of music as a piece of evidence for the highly developed human civilisation. B &W Piano Tribe introduces classical music and some traditional folk music through various arrangements; such as piano ensemble, piano duet, and two pianos with eight hands or four hands on one piano. Since 2011, B &W Piano Tribe has maintained regular concerts throughout the year. With their busy teaching career and individual concert schedules around the world, the group has completed 20 concerts in seven series program in Taiwan.

　Hsin-Ya YEH was born in Taiwan and has studied the piano since the age of six. She majored in piano performance in Tunghai University under Ming-Hwa CHEN. After graduated with her Bachelor degree, she moved to the US and attended in Boyer College of Music, Temple University, studied with Prof. Alexander Fiorillo who is a pupil of the great pianist Vladimir Horowitz. After Hsin-Ya completed her Master of Piano Pedagogy, she returned to Taiwan and continued as a piano instructor and concert pianist. Among her busy teaching schedule, Hsin-Ya grouped with pianist friends and founded B & W Piano Tribe, performing original and arranged classical music through piano ensemble.

　Dr. Charleen Cha-Lin LIU has been on the faculty of the Department of Multimedia and Animation Arts, National Taiwan University of Arts, teaching the undergraduate and graduate digital music since 2010. Previously, she taught digital music and sound effects at National Yunlin University of Science and Technology. Her two doctorates were completed in the University of California, Los Angeles and Musikhoch-schule für Musik “Hanns Eisler”, Berlin.

　She has performed in venues such as Konzerthaus Berlin, Karajan Concert Hall Berlin, Boser Saal in Vienna, Schoenberg Hall Los Angeles, National Taiwan Concert Hall, to name a few. As a concert soloist, she has appeared with numerous orchestras, including the Manhattan Chamber Orchestra, Berliner Symphoniker, Vienna Residence Orches-tra, UCLA Philharmonia, Hildesheimer Orchestra, Pro Arte Orchestra, and NHUE Orchestra. Dr. Liu also performed in the festivals of Aspen (USA), Salzburg and Altenburg (Austria), Interlaken (Switzerland), Mannheim (Germany) and Warsaw (Poland).

　Emilie Mu-Hsuan KUO was born in Taipei, Taiwan. She started playing the piano at the age of five and began her lessons with well-respected professors in Taiwan. She made history at age 16, as young-est student to past the examination with the highest score of the “Hermann-Zilcher-Konservatorium－Fachakademie für Musik der Stadt Würzburg ” in Germany and began her studies with Prof. Michael Schlüter and Prof. Lucy Hallmann Russell.

　From 1999 to 2005 she studied at the “Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler Berlin” with Prof. Klaus Bäßler, Prof. Annerose Schmidt and Prof. Susanne Grützmann. In 2005, she received her Master’s Degrees (Diplom) in Piano Performance and also in Piano Pedagogy.

　A regular visitor to international festivals both as soloist and cham-ber musician, Emilie Mu-Hsuan Kuo has constantly performed in many concert halls in Europe and Asia, including Konzertreihe “Beethoven”- Bechtolsheimerhof Würzburg, Festspiele Bad Kissinger; Hammel-burger Festspiele 1998; in 2012 as the soloist playing the piano concerto “The Yellow River” with the symphony orchestra of NTUA; 2013 debuts of her piano recitals and 2014 “NTUA 12 hands concert” at the National Performing Hall in Taipei. Emilie Mu-Hsuan Kuo is also juror of major piano competitions in Taiwan and lecturer of National Taiwan University of Arts since 2012. She also gives masterclasses and lectures for young musicians.

　Chia-Fang WU was born in Chung Li City, Taiwan. She began studying Piano at the age of six in the piano class with teacher Bi-Ing Hsieh and later on with Professors Jun-Cheng Lu, Yi-Man Wu and Chung-Chi Kao in Taipei. During her stay in Germany, she continued her piano studies with Professor Georg Sava in Berlin. In 1992 she went to Hochschule für Musik ”Hanns Eisler“ Berlin, where she studied Piano performance under Professor Klaus Baessler and holds a Master's Degree (Diplom) in Piano Performance and in Music Education.

　Chia-Fang has performed numerous piano recitals and concerts during her study in Berlin. She is now a well-experienced piano teacher in six music schools located at northern Taiwan. In addition to her music teaching career, Chia-Fang keeps maintaining a regular perfor-mance schedules and gave recitals. She performed as the invited solo pianist in the concert with the Dandelion Flute Ensemble. A series of “Charleen Liu and Chia-Fang Wu Four Hands Concerts” were presented between 2009 and 2011 in Taiwan.

　Chia-Fang WU is one of the founding members of the B & W Piano Tribe and has performed in all of the concerts with the group.

The Man Waiting

　Luis Rolo Allemand is a Chilean-born artist, and has lived in Australia for almost 30 years. Like many, he fled Chile as a refugee during the 1980’s after 8 years of being a political and social activist.

　He started painting tracing lines on canvas and applying colours in soft pastel and acrylic. Allemand also holds qualifications in multimedia and have worked in digital printing and photog-raphy. His paintings sit comfortably alongside his digital works. His work is a play of colour and light. It brings an unrealistic order to heartfelt experi-ences, memories and feelings.

　Allemand’s artworks are vibrant and distinctly Latin-American in style. They are inspired by the indigenous struggle for survival and the defence of human rights in the world. His work is a cry for social justice and peace. His work talks about individual, social freedom and represent the wisdom, liberation, joy and peace we fight to reclaim at the end of a difficult or painful jour-ney. The relief and joy we find in once again being able to celebrate our humanity.

　This work speaks to the long journey many people must endure to survive the past.

　This is my own experience once upon a time, and the ongo-ing experience of many today who have not reached their aspirations of freedom and the possibility of a better life.

　Hope represents the dreams and aspirations that everyone should be entitled to have. To live well, to exist, to be free.

　They look up to the stars and gods for guidance. The con-nection with nature and the respect for all living things gave them a unique spiritual relation with each other.

　This is painting of ancient mythological birds. Bong means male and Hwang means female bird of immortality. They are symbol of high virtue and grace, but also symbol of the union of yin and yang.

　It was believed when the Bong Hwang bird only appeared the nation was the most flourishing.

　Sujin Nam (Hyoung Sook Nam) was originally an oil painting art graduate. She became interested in Korean traditional painting when she came across an aboriginal art exhibition in Brisbane and struck by the beauty of the ancient artwork. Also the event inspired her to look into Korean Minhwa and to realise how beautiful our traditional art was. From then on, she found one of the best Korean traditional painting teachers in Korea and learned the most traditional way of Minhwa paintings.

　She had several art exhibitions in South Korea over the years and a couple in overseas, one in LA, USA in 2013 and another in Brisbane in 2016. She had many awards with her paint-ings and became one of the board members of Korean Minhwa associa-tion in Korea and currently the chair-man of Korean Minhwa association in Australia.

　This painting arranged 10 symbols of longevity into a pastoral landscape depiction of paradise. Originally used mostly in the palace to celebrate royal weddings and other occasion, wishing for long life with good fortune.

　These 10 symbols are the Su, clouds, rock / moun-tains, water, pine trees, bamboo, mushrooms of immor-tality, red-crested cranes, deer and turtles.

　One of the most favoured items in the Korean traditional paintings, the lotus represents the true gentleman, a classical scholar with a noble character. These paintings of lotuses often includ-ing birds, fish and insects are symbols of happiness in the family and especially love between husband and wife.

　Lien Jansen is a realist painter focusing on the psychological por-trait. Her portraits are simple, quiet and introspective. Her images are presented in a straightforward and unadorned fashion to express emo-tion and create a real life statement.

　Lien Jansen was born in 1950. At the age of two, her family moved from North Vietnam to South Viet-nam, due to the war. Lien lived a hard life with her single mother and three sisters, and never had a place to call home until her second oldest sister was able to find work with the Austra-lian Army. This opened up the oppor-tunity for her to migrate to Australia in the 1970s. She has lived in many p l a c e s i n b o t h V i c t o r i a a n d Queensland. After many years of struggle she was able to settle down and eventually found peace and have a place to call home these past 12 years.

　After retiring, Lien Jansen became a passionate painter and began study in 2009. She had her first art lesson at Southbank Institute of Technology, and later completed Diploma in Visual Arts, and Advanced Diploma in Visual Arts at TAFE Queensland Bris-bane. She is now undertaking further study on Bachelor of Visual Arts at University of Canberra, Southbank Campus.

　The Pearl Necklace symbolise purity, wisdom, dignity and beauty, and the pattern on the garments are decorative elements add to enhance our own appearance. The hand gesture is often highly regarded for its power and represent our personality and finally, the background depicts domestic scene considered the woman’ s place all over the world, our generation accepting the role happily without questioning.

STORY　The idea painting sisterhood portraits is a tribute to sisterhood, the unspoken love. As we are approaching our coming age, our memories are fading with time, and I hope the pearl necklace por-traits of sisterhood will remind us that no matter how far apart, our love will always be near and strong.

　Dr. Cha-Lin Liu has been on the faculty of the Department of Multimedia and Animation Arts, Na-t ional Taiwan University of Arts since 2010. She teaches the undergraduate and graduate digi ta l music, and a graduate seminar in music-inspired design research.

　Dr. Liu is a captivating pianist. Her professional engagements have taken her to many countr ies. She has performed in venues such as Konzerthaus Berlin, Karajan Concert Hall Berlin, Boser Saal in Vienna, Schoenberg Hal l Los Angeles, Nat ional Taiwan Concert Hall, to name a few. She has performed in the festivals of Aspen (USA), Salzburg and Altenburg (Austria), Interlaken (Switzerland), Mannheim (Germany) and Warsaw (Poland).

　Previously, she taught digital music and sound effects at National Yunlin University of Science and Technology.
