Putonghua 普通話 (Standard Chinese)

The official language of the People’s Republic of ChinaAlso known as Standard Chinese or Mandarin, Putonghua is the official language of China, Taiwan and one of the four official languages of Singapore. Spoken by more than 1 billion native speakers, Putonghua is increasingly regarded as the language with equal importance to English. Along with China’s economic rise, learning Putonghua seems to have become inevitable for many, and the education systems in various countries have made Putonghua as a foreign language programme compulsory for students.

Cantonese 廣東話

A language with a long history and the mother tongue of most Hong Kong peopleWidely spoken in Hong Kong, Macau, Guangdong Province and overseas Chinese communities, Cantonese is one of the seven major dialects of China. Its origin dates from as early as the Qin Dynasty (221 to 206 BC). During the Song Dynasty (960 to 1279 AD), the occupation of northern China by foreign invaders caused an exodus of the Han Chinese to southern China, where the Cantonese dialect took shape. Hong Kong is the only place in the world where people use it officially to discuss serious issues. Its long heritage and vitality give it far-reaching influence on pop culture within the Asia-Pacific region.

Chinese Characters 中國漢字

Representation of China’s civilization and cultureChinese Characters are logograms used in the writing of Chinese and constitute the oldest continuously-used system of writing in the world. These artistic characters are indispensable to the civilization of China and have great impact on the language systems in the Asia-Pacific region like Japan and Korea. Studies carried out in China have shown that functional literacy requires knowledge of between 3000 to 4000 characters.

LanguageIt is a tool for communication, a name card for your personality and a bridge leading to a new world.

“CLC was recommended to me by my PhD supervisor who himself is a CLC graduate. He said, “you’ll have to study hard but don’t worry - the staff are amazing”. True words! I especially like the fact that I now have friendships with fellow students (Korean, American and Japanese) and that our sole language of communication is Mandarin.” Jacqueline Elfick (Holland)

“ 私は、自身も卒業生である大学院の教授の紹介で CLC の存在を知りました。彼が言うには、” 君はそこで一生懸命勉強しなければならないだろう、でも心配はいらないよ、スタッフがすばらしいんだ! ”それは事実でした。 現在、韓国、アメリカ、日本から来たクラスメートとも仲良くなりました。我々がコミュニケーションする際の唯一の共通言語が普通話であることも、すごいことだと思います。” Jacqueline Elfick ( オランダ )

Hong KongHong Kong (HK) is a region on China's south-east coast that came under British control in the 19th century. Over 150 years later in 1997 Britain finally handed HK back to China, classifying it as a “Special Administrative Region” (SAR).

HK has made its reputation as a financial centre and Asia's World City. In recent years its economy has become more integrated with that of the mainland.

One of the most striking characteristics of HK is the interweaving of contradictions and the interplay of the exotic and technically advanced. Due to these dazzling contrasts, HK offers visitors something unique -- the chance to experience a vibrant Chinese city without sacrificing the comforts of home.

English is widely spoken in this most cosmopolitan of cities. Along with invigorating opportunities for personal growth, Hong Kong offers unmatched insights into fast track global business, rapid urban and social development, and an energetic civil society.

Medical care in Hong Kong is world class and public hospitals are inexpensive.

Law and order in Hong Kong is the envy of many other cities in the world; the crime rate is low and public security is not only very good but also unobtrusive.

There is on top of it all, a rich cultural life in Hong Kong. Often described as The City of Light, Hong Kong is the meeting place of East and West where the indigenous culture of Southern China comes into contact with the best the West has to offer in the world of the arts and entertainment.

The Academic Activities Division (AAD) is a functional division within the Centre coordinating the development of four major academic projects namely the TTP (Teacher Training Project), TMP (Teaching Materials Project), LAP (Language Assessment Project) and CRP (Curriculum Revision Project).

Teacher Training Project (TTP)The TTP serves as an indicator for the integration between teaching and teaching-related research. It is a standardized process which covers new teacher training as well as in-service training for all CLC teachers. The 2-year in-service training cycle consists of a series of professional workshops presented by academic leaders and experienced teachers of the Centre on various topics in linguistics and teaching Chinese as a Second Language. These include lectures by invited speakers from the Academic Visitor Programme and the resulting publication of academic monographs. Participation in in-service training is one of the factors in the teachers’ contract renewal consideration. All the full-time instructors in the Centre are funded by the university to present papers at overseas conferences.

Language Assessment Project (LAP)Computerized Oral Proficiency Assessment (COPA): launched by the Centre in 2004, COPA assesses the oral proficiency of learners of Putonghua and Cantonese for communication purposes for both native and non-native speakers. It follows similar testing principles used in the Chinese Speaking Test (CST), an on-going research project funded by the US Department of Education. The COPA rating scale is built upon the proficiency guidelines developed by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL). Different language versions are available to cater for different first language users.
