A Night Divided is a historical drama based in Germany around the time when the Berlin Wall was built. The novel is about a twelve-year-old girl named Gerta, who became separated from her father and brother after the Berlin wall was constructed. The family was divided after the two had gone to West Berlin to work. Overnight, the wall was erected, stopping them from getting back home and reuniting with their family, who were all on the Eastern side. East Berlin was controlled by the Soviets. All citizens including Gerta’s family had their freedom taken away from them. People tried to escape but mostly failed. It was extremely dangerous and risky to attempt, or even to think about crossing over to the other side as they could be killed by the German soldiers guarding the wall. However, one day, their father sent them a message using peculiar actions on a viewing platform, and eventually Gerta figured out that he was telling them to go to an old, rusty house along the border and dig a tunnel under the wall to find their way to the other side in order to reunite the family. The beauty of humanity shines through the plot. The sacrifice of the altruistic Officer Müller brought me to tears. I find Gerta’s bravery particularly admirable because it requires lots of courage and determination for her to follow her father's instructions and survive the quest. Dear Wing,

How are you? Long time no see since last Easter holidays. I am sorry about that you got a traffic accident for half a year. Have you already adapted to the new life? I have read an amazing book ‘Quick Change’. I really want to share with you because it is so meaningful. The main character was 12 years old like us.

How do you feel if your parents told you that you were their adoptive daughter on your twelfth birthday? Oh! my god! You might feel that it was the most unacceptable birthday gift you had ever received in the world, and so did Helen, from ‘Quick Change’.

Although Helen’s parents loved her very much, she felt very miserable and started to think about who she was. Then everything changed. A voice talked to her and taught her to become anything she wanted. Helen tried while her head was going hot and her hands were going yellow. Yes, she did!

One day, Helen was kidnapped by two bad guys and they drove her away. Helen became the car driver and drove towards to the police station cleverly. Finally, the bad guys were caught by the police. Helen saved herself. She told her parents all that happened.

Misfortune might be a blessing in disguise. At least Helen’s parents were still loving her so much. Besides, she recognized her mission in this planet. Helen decided to stay with the police and gave her yellow helping hands to people in need.

Every life in existence has its own value. I believe that this story can give you positive encouragement. I really wish you a quick recovery. Please greet my uncle and aunt on my behalf. And also, the big fat Little Fuzzy cat.

Yours sincerely,Your cousin

26th December 2018Dear Romas,

How are you, I hope you are well in London!

I have just read the book, “Charlie and the chocolate factory”. I cannot wait to share it with you! The story is about Charlie, an underprivileged but optimistic boy, and four other children who win the golden tickets and the opportunity to visit Mr. Wonka’s chocolate factory where everyone in town dreams of visiting.

A new world reveals itself to Charlie once he sets foot in the factory. The inventions created by Mr. Wonka are miraculous. To name a few, there is a chocolate waterfall that mixes chocolate; a great gum machine that produces gums in different flavours, like tomato soup, roast beef and blueberry pie. There is also a television which can send chocolate bars from one room to another! The more privileged children eat as much chocolate as they wish, breaking Mr. Wonka’s rule, their greediness also get themselves into dangerous situations, causing them to end the visit earlier.

By respecting Mr. Wonka’s rule, Charlie impresses the ageing factory owner and the young boy is chosen as a suitable heir to inherent the factory. When Mr. Wonka announces the news, Charlie cannot believe his luck but accept the offer gratefully.

I admire Charlie’s high moral standards throughout the story. It must take a lot of self-control to not taste the yummy chocolate! Charlie keeps his promise because he respects Mr. Wonka and knows that it is the right thing to do. I believe Charlie will become a great new factory owner and he might even share his sweets and fortune with poor children as he knows how it feels like to be hungry.

The book makes me believe that “Nothing is impossible!”, just as Mr. Wonka says. Perhaps one day, we can invent our own machines and have a wonderful adventure with them!

Romas, please let me know if you find the story interesting. If you want to experience Charlie’s fascinating journey and Mr. Wonka’s mysterious world, I am happy to share my book with you.

Warm wishes,Adrian

Dear Jasmine,

My best friend, how are you? I’m sorry to know that you’re going through a hard time and are depressed by being bullied by other meanies at school. I really want to comfort you, please let me use the magic of reading to inspire you.

Recently, I have read the book “Wonder”, it tells an incredibly and heartwarming story of a boy, August Pullman. August, so called Auggie, had severe facial issues, such as his eyes were on inch lower than where they should be, his ears were like tiny cauliflowers..., he was homeschooled by his mother, but when he reached 5th grade, his parents sent him to a private school, Beecher Prep. At the beginning, Auggie was nervous and he faced different difficulties, to name a few, being bullied by others at school, people scared of him, people making jokes on him... even Auggie’s best friend talked behind his back with the lead bully. Therefore he was really upset. But luckily, with the encouragement from his family, he started to gain confidence in himself and others started to see him differently, and not judging him by his appearances. In the end, Auggie even got the Henry Ward Beecher award, an award for one’s strength and courage.

I highly recommend this book to you because it gave me the rare opportunity to look from another’s perspective on things. Thanks to this amazing book, I learnt to be kind no matter what and have empathy towards others, and I deeply wish that the people who bullied you would understand this too. I sincerely hope that through reading Auggie’s story, you can always remember that with the strong support from your family and the strong will power that you have, we can get through this tough time together.

Remember to be proud and to believe in yourself. As Auggie said, “Everyone in the world should get a standing ovation at least once in their life because we all overcome the world.” Also, no matter what happens, I am always on your side.

Cheers, Charlie

Dear Alexandra,

Have you ever read a book that touched you emotionally?

Well I have. Without a doubt, my favourite book is ‘The Parent Agency’. This book is about a ten years old boy named Barry Bennett. He is extremely naughty and always gets into trouble. Barry wishes to have “better” parents that are not strict and boring. One day, he falls badly. While he is unconscious, he enters a different world where children can choose their desired parents. Barry chooses and spends time with five different kinds of parents. Although he likes all his “perfect" parents very much, he slowly discovers that each pair of parents have their own strengths and weaknesses. Every time he thinks his new parents are “perfect”, they turn out to be far from it. Waking up, he realises that his original parents may not have been perfect, but he loves them regardless.

Firstly, I feel empathetic towards Barry. Sometimes I am angry with my parents and want to swap parents with my friends. Naturally, it is something every child secretly wishes for. I find the story hilarious and the characters extremely funny. I especially like the part where the parents are bossed around by child agents and I wish reality can be just like this.

Another reason why I love this book is because it has touched me emotionally. The part when Barry wakes up and discovers his parents love him was really touching. My heart melts, as it makes me realise that although my parents are strict, this is because they want me to grow up and become a good person. My parents may not be perfect, but I love them more than anything in this world.

In conclusion, “The Parent Agency” was an excellent book and I highly recommended you to read it. I bet you will love this book as soon as you start reading it.

Best wishes,Lea

Dear Ellie,

How are you? I hope you are happy and well.

I am recommending a very special book to you, as I know you adore reading. This particular book is called “When the Sea Turned Silver” and is written by Grace Lin.

It tells the story of Pinmei, a young Chinese girl whose storytelling grandma gets captured by the new king and his soldiers, leaving her devastated. Along with her mysterious friend Yishan, Pinmei embarks on a thrilling adventure to rescue her beloved grandma before it’s too late. On the way, they encounter legendary creatures such as a half-dragon-half-horse and the sea king’s daughter, which come from old Chinese folk-tales. Pinmei and Yishan come across obstacles of every kind, but with their strong friendship and quick wits, they manage to overcome them. At last, the duo saves Pinmei’s grandma in the nick of time and all is well again.

I highly recommend this book as it is overflowing with an array of old Chinese folk-tales that are both intriguing and wonderful. The folktales teach me more about Chinese culture and inspire my imagination. I hope to visit China’s villages and listen to forgotten stories of fantasy and magic. Another excellent reason why you should definitely read this book is that it is very touching. The way how Pinmei and her grandma love and look out for each other nearly moved me to tears. They made me realise that family always comes first, no matter what happens. Also, the way how Grace Lin writes is very beautiful. The events and characters are written in such vividness that I can see everything clearly in my head, as they were really taking place. If you want to improve your literature writing skills, you really should read this book.

In a nutshell, I hope you will enjoy reading “When the Sea Turned Silver”. It is truly a great read.

Best Wishes,Jayla

Dear Anya,

How are you? I am very sorry to hear that you had a big fight with your brother recently. I am writing to introduce you to a deeply touching book which would be comforting and soothing. It is The Great Blue Yonder by Alex Shearer.

This book is about a post-death experience of a boy named Harry who died in a bike accident. He got to the other world where the dead were preparing to go to a Great Blue Yonder. Instead of following the others, Harry wanted to go back to the real world that he once lived in order to say goodbye to his family and friends, particularly to say sorry to his elder sister Eggy, whom he said something mean to with rage just before he died. He managed to do so as a ghost, during his visit to his school as well as home, he saw the people he loved and hated, but everything became so different because of his treasuring of the real world.

Through a series of amazing events, he learnt understanding and forgiveness. For example, when Harry went to Eggy’s room, he saw Eggy looking at his photos. Then, Harry used the telekinesis powers he acquired to control a pencil to communicate with Eggy. They took this last precious chance to apologise to each other. Finally, Harry went back to the other world. With the undone things finished smoothly, Harry got ready to “melt” into the “Great Blue Yonder”, where all the dead finally disappear into. At the end of the story, the Great Blue Yonder was regarded as “The way the leaves return to the ground – you’ll be in everything and everyone. Just the way that everyone and everything was once part of you”.

This book is humorous but serious. I was taught by this book how life is invaluable, and we really need to treasure the time we live from now on. Moreover, we should get along with the people around us, so we would not have any regret when we die and can have a peaceful life. I hope this book will help give you peace of mind in the days ahead.

With love,Grace
