CHSI had its first ever Christmas party on Satur-
day, December 12, 2009 at the March Air Field
Museum. The rain was strong and the winds blew
but that did not stop us from coming together for
our first, of hopefully many, Christmas celebrations.
We want to thank everyone who participated in
making this a special event. The centerpieces were
done by the Bloomington, Arlanza and Corporate
staff: Melanie Talbert, Mandey Marangakis, Clau-
dia Pulido, Patricia Rodriguez, Shelleen Delaney,
Fran Ritchie and the Human Resources Department.
A special thank you goes to Dr. Moore who left his
family and made a special flight from Texas just to
join us for the event. The evening would not have
been the same without the expertise of Dr. Moore to
snap those memorable photos of all the employees
and their guests.
Sonya Dew stated, “as the HR Director, I couldn’t
have been more pleased with the outcome of this
first time Christmas event. My staff; Leah Docili,
HR Generalist and Raeisha George, HR Asst.
worked extremely hard to stay within budget and
became very creative to make this a most special
evening. It is my hope that the events for 2010 will
be a more cooperative effort by forming an events
team consisting of a staff member from each one of
our clinics. With more involvement, I believe each
event will only continue to get better and better.
For those of you that braved the inclement weather
to attend the Christmas party, thank you! For those
of you that missed it, I hope to see you at the next
event!”

Wendy Hayes
our newest
C l i n i c
Administrator
for Moreno
Valley Family
Health Center,
completes our
full staff of
Administrators
for our five clinics. Wendy has been with
CHSI for a little over one month now and
has hit the ground running!
As a Clinic Administrator, Wendy
oversees the overall operations of the
Moreno Valley Family Health Center. She
is currently involved with implementing
the CPSP program, PE and Family Pact
programs and expanding dental services.
Wendy’s background in healthcare
includes working in various hospitals,
ER’s, hospice, and Labor & Delivery.
These experiences have helped her to
think on her feet in crucial situations,
sympathize and empathize when needed,
and be an educator to those who
needed it.
She is currently an LVN with an
Associates in Psychology, and plans to get
her BSN; eventually gaining her Nurse
Practitioner certification.
One accomplishment she is very proud of
is the new Rural Health Clinic with the
addition of dental services she built as a
Clinic Manager, in Big Bear City.
She started taking the projected studies to
the Board of
Directors and
f o l l o w i n g
through as
p r o j e c t
manager until
the end of
construction.
With the grand opening in July of 2009,
the clinic was complete and open for
business. It was then that Wendy felt as
though she could move on having given
150%. Thus moving to Redlands to finish
her education and later taking the Clinic
Administrator position in Moreno Valley.
Wendy enjoys the challenge of overcoming
the obstacles healthcare providers face in
rural health care in America. She enjoys
bringing forth the disparities and being the
voice for CHSI’s target population and
others who cannot access health care
because of economic factors or cultural
differences.
We know with all great work comes
challenges, so we asked Wendy what was
most challenging about her current
position. “The limited resources for those
that have the most need is most
challenging” explains Wendy, who goes on
to say, “There is such an increased need for
care for persons with substance use and
mental health and, education delivery for
individuals who are unaware there are
options available.”
When Wendy is not at work she enjoys all
things outdoors; camping, off-roading and
2 jeep club memberships. She loves
reading-thanks to her 8th grade speed
reading class-and likes any music with a
catchy tune. Did you know, she wanted to
be a race car driver growing up? In fact,
she still wants to be a race car driver when
she grows up!
Wendy is adventurous and a thrill seeker
by nature, she sky dived for Pete's sake!
All in all, Wendy can be described as
loyal, motivated and sometimes stubborn.
She’d like nothing more then to have the
victory over her challenges and to instill
encouragement and motivation in her two
girls (Something her parents have done for
her).
Watch for updates on the Moreno Valley
Family Health Center in upcoming
newsletters.
Anthem Blue Cross annual open
enrollment is in March 2010. This is the
time any medical and/or dental insurance
changes can be made.

Department.

CENSUS 2010
In March the U.S. Census Bureau will be mailing or delivering census forms to every
household in the United States. It is critical that all Moreno Valley residents be
counted and the City is encouraging every household to return their completed form by
“Census Day”, April 1, 2010. including just 10 simple questions, the census form
should only take 10 minutes to complete.
Why is the Census 2010 effort important to our community? It is estimated that for
each resident that is not counted, the City can lose between $1,000 - $1,200 per year in
federal funding. The Census Bureau estimates that in the last census count, Moreno
Valley residents’ response rate for returning their forms was just 70%. In addition to
losing funding, our area could lose representation as the number of representatives in
Congress is determined by the population date compiled by the Census.
Return your census form:
It’s Easy, It’s Important, It’s Safe.

This particular event is done every
Christmas season for the Commu-
nity and the families that are seen
here at the clinic. This event not
only makes our Community more
aware of our services provided
here at the clinic and reassures
them that we are here to provide
their healthcare needs, but that we
see them as people and not num-
bers.
The feedback received was very
positive. Attendees stated how
well done the event was. One of
the most enjoyable parts was that
the community pitched in to help
wrap presents and help with the
decorations. There were gifts,
door prizes and raffles for all ages.
The Oscar Mayer Wiener Mobile,
Riverside PD K-9 Unit, Officer
Byrd, Clowns, Car Show, RCOE
Head start staff are some of the
entertainment provided. With the
assistance of the Head Start staff
the children created letters and
Christmas cards for the troops
overseas. These letters and cards
will be going to Camp Pendleton
and from there they will be sent to
our men and woman overseas.
Adela Rosado worked with me to
put this together. We went out to
the community to get toys and
many more donations. 90% of our
event was all donations obtained
with her help.
We collected over 700 toys and
800 hot dogs and juices and drinks
for the children and we registered
802 participants. Door prizes in-
cluded: 5 bikes, 2 skateboards,
live Christmas Trees and gifts for
the adults, and many, many toys.
A cake walk for the children gave
out 9 cakes.
Thank you to the following staff
for all of their hard work and love
that they put in to this event.
Adela Rosado; Dr. Mullangi; Cyn-
thia Suarez; Cathy Thompson;
Grace Chung; Gabriella Magal-
lanes; Silvia Silva; Gloria
Fuentes; Mary Ortiz; Veronica
Montes; Joana Villa; Jacqueline
Cummins; Alma Guzman; Cindy
Amezcua; Sergio Munoz.
Thank you to all our family
members who came out to help.
A special thank you to
CHSI Board member, Mr. Bill
Gonzales for his help and dona-
tions; Marianne Gonzales and
Ashley Christman for toys and for
Ms. Fran Ritchie for supporting us
and helping to make our vision
become a reality.
ANNUAL HOLIDAY CELEBRATION at ARLANZA Santa’s Workshop
A HOLIDAY CELEBRATION North Pole at Moreno Valley
The snow was falling and all the
elves were decking the hall...in
Moreno Valley! Yes, on Saturday,
December 5, 2009 the North Pole
came to Moreno Valley to give
warm wishes and jolly hugs to the
children of the community.
With endless efforts from Tiffany
Steward and the Moreno Valley
Clinic, this event brought together
community resources while
providing a festive environment
for families to enjoy. In addition
to pictures and laughs with Santa,
there were gifts for the children
and screenings for families in
need.
A community partners contacted
Tiffany the Monday after the
event to share with Tiffany that
her father had come to the event
solely to support her booth.
However, he ended up getting a
free screening while there and
found out that his blood pressure
and blood sugar was critical. She
was so happy that we were able to
get him in to see Dr. Castro.
Tiffany says, “things like this
make all the hard work worth it.”
One of the main things Tiffany
enjoyed about this event was that
despite opinions about the city of
Moreno Valley, “we were able to
give back to a community that
seems to be on the back end. One
important thing to remember is the
reason for the season. For Tiffany,
that is giving back.
Tiffany thanks everyone who
helped put this event together,
including everyone who
participated.
“I think this event impacted
families, community partners and
city officials. Next year the city
has granted us $5,000 for our
event” says Tiffany Steward,
Outreach, Moreno Valley.
Vendor feedback:
“There were many reflections about this weekend’s event that I don’t know where to begin. A huge thank you to Moreno Valley Health for inviting Prevent Child Abuse Riverside County to participate. We were so busy taking pictures and decorating the picture frames that many of us didn’t get a chance to meet the other ven-dors. Some of the picture frames decorated by the children were the only gifts that they had to give to their parents. We ran out of letters that spelled, “I love you,” by noon. Mrs. Claus reported getting some of the best hugs in the world from many of the children; some more than once. We wish you all a safe and wonderful holiday season.”
